A woman (Blair Brown as Rachel Dunleavy) comes to town claiming Clark is her son Lucas, and she demands a blood test. A secret tie between Clark's adoption and the Luthors is revealed. Plus, Lana looks into meeting the man (Patrick Cassidy as Henry Small) she thinks may actually be her father.
We first meet Henry Small in this episode, which also includes a flashback back to 1989.

I really liked this episode since it showed us more about what happend durring the meteor shower.
And it explained why Jonathan acted the way he did toward Lex. Still wrong for him to be mad at Lex for something that not only Lionel but Jonathan himself was responsible for.

It's a shame they dropped the Creamed Corn Factory subplot. It would have been interesting to see how Pete would've reacted knowing Clark's family was responsible for letting the Luthors into the town.

What was the episode when we find out Lionel made the adoption papers for Clark and gave them to Jonathan? It was a flash back when Martha and Jonathan took young Clark home. Thanks in advance!

This was the first episode I saw, but I wasn't really a fan of the show then so i would be switching back and forth between commercials. This is a really good episode though. not one of my favorites but still really good.

OK... I'm watching Season 2 (when there's lots of other things I should be doing) and I've just watched Lineage.
This is a wonderful companion episode to the Pilot episode of Season 1. It tells the other half of the story of what happened the day Jonathan and Martha found Clark and also how the adoption happens. Martha is just beautiful in the flash backs despite her silly wig!
And Lionel has an even sillier wig in the flashbacks! LOL!
Even more important and more exciting for me (than the wonderful flashbacks) were the developments in Jonathan's character. This was a Jonathan Kent episode in a lot of ways.
I always thought Jonathan was a bit of a hard-headed when it came to the Luthor's... I mean I know they are bad but are they really THAT bad. This episode put all my questions to rest. Jonathan has such a good reason for hating the Luthor's that it almost made me cry.
In fact it makes me mad and Martha for even THINKING of taking Lionel's money in Season 5, and it makes me HATE the thought of Mionel! Oh my heart broke for Jonathan.
This episode also made me see that Martha has a manipulative side. I love her to death but she is very like Lionel and Lex in that she sees shades of gray... whereas Jonathan is very black or white usually. Martha chooses the good side but... she sees shades of gray...
3 year old Clark was so cute... And now that I think about Season 3 where Clark has a memory of his birthmother Lara... i guess that means it took him three years to travel in the little spaceship to earth... Hmm...
Anyways, this is a great episode!
Oh yeah! Allison did some great work in this episode! Clark finds out that Chloe has continued to investigate Clark's adoption to the point that the FOTW for this episode (though not a metor freak) has come to Smallville claiming to be his mother.
Clark snaps at Chloe... something about finding out about her own missing mother and Chloe dissolves into tears... She's upset the whole episode. And I was FURIOUS that Clark only starts speaking to her again so she can find out some information for him so he can save Lex. It renewed my enthusiasm for Season 6 Chlimmy (Chimmy?)!
Anyway Chloe takes it in stride and eventually Clark does apologize. Chloe breaks down again and says, "It's just hard thinking that you weren't good enough for someone to love." It all came together for me at that moment. Why for five years Chloe has latched onto a guy who doesn't want her.
It's this think where subconsiously you latch onto someone who doesn't want you becuase you think deep down that if I can just win this person over, If I can just make him love me then it'll mean that my mommy (insert parent who didn't show love) loved me too and I'm worth loving... (sadly I did this...)
There's probably a name for it but... bring on the Chlimmy!
Oh, being the daughter of Henry Small makes Lana, Lana Small: First Princess of Smallville. :) LOL!

Thats what I hate about this episode, Clark's only reason he apologized to Chloe was cause he needed her to look stuff up. What an a$$

I wonder who that boy in the picture is. At the end when Lex went to see Lionel, and when Lex left, Lionel looked at a picture and there was Lionel and some boy on it...

It's Lucas. well, in the show it's Lucas. In real life, it's some kid they hired to be little lucas.

It's not like she didn't deserve it. I mean, if I had told my friend not to look into something huge like my adoption, I wouldn't have spoken to them for weeks. That was a heartless behavior on her behalf.
If anything I thought Clark let her off the hook WAY too easy.
That being said, Lineage was a good exposition episode. Everything was clearly explained and it wasn't boring at all.
The woman who played Rachel Dunlevy did get on my nerves, but since we're supposed to hate her character, I think that was a good thing.

I love this episode, specially the flashbacks that shows little Clark meeting Lex after the meteor shower, how sweet was that and the Kents, they really showed how much the loved Clark since the very first moment =)
I specially like it the part where we can see the dissapoinment in Lex's face when he knows that Clark's not his brother, I felt for him.

I had a problem with the way they handled Clark's rights as an adopted child in this episode. Clark did not have to take the DNA test. An adopted child has that right not to be forced to see his birth parents if he does not want to. When a person gives a child up for an adoption their parental rights are severed. Clark's birth mother had no rights over him and could not demand anything of Clark if he did not wish to have any involvement with her.
Another thing I did not like about this episode was that Chloe took it upon herself to delve so deeply into Clark's past and his adoption. She should have respected his privacy.

So Clark asked Chloe not to look into his adoption, but Chloe went ahead and did it anyway. Correct? Why are journalists SO OBSESSED with getting a story, even when it hurts others?

I loved seeing the same actors back from the pilot as little Clark and little Lex. All the others they've hired since kinda bugged me because they weren't these two.
I really liked seeing Chloe cross a line because it just made her that much more interesting as Clark's friend. The deal with Lionel was really interesting as well...

It was a pretty cool episode. I liked the flashbacks that showed us more from what actually happened on the day of the meteor shower. That obsessed lady who thought Clark was her son (when it really turned out to be Lucas) was way creepy. I wonder what ever happened to her... Yeah, Chloe was pretty obsessed this season, both about the truth, and about Clark, which did lead to some cool character moments, and helped her eventually mature into the character we have today after realizing and atoning for her past mistakes.

You are aware, aren't you, that Chloe's passion for investigation almost got Lex killed? Clark asked her to stop looking into his adoption, but she went right ahead and kept looking anyway, posting some notices on adoption sites. Some psycho redhead comes into town and wreaks all kinds of havoc on Lex and a few others, and if she hadn't been stopped, she would have probably hurt Jonathan and Martha too.
And Chloe genuinely thinks she did nothing wrong! Chloe put other people's lives at risk just to enjoy some investigative journalism, and she has the nerve to want Clark to date her?

I'm just watching this episode at the moment on DVD...I downloaded this episode from the internet about 5 years ago and have fond memories watching it on my old dell laptop...this episode is definitely up there in my top 5 eps of all time. Smallville lacks this type of quality storytelling these days... :(

Does anyone know if the "new" post-meteor shower footage was shot specifically for this episode, or was it left over footage shot but not used for the pilot?
