A young artist (Adam Brody) with the power of telekinesis starts up a relationship with Chloe but seeks revenge on those who left him in his condition in the first place. Meanwhile, Whitney receives some tragic news, and the show gets its first musical montage ending.
I really didn't care about the FOTW storyline for this one. The beginnings of the (way too brief) Clark/Chloe romance are tied into it, though, so make it somewhat watchable. The last act of the episode is where all the really good stuff is. Depressing, yes, but good. And the musical montage at the end was fantastic and oh so foreshadowy.

I love the beginning of the Chlark romance in the last few season 1 episodes...they are so adorable together..

I wasnt crazy about the FotW either. But the end is one of best scene's of the series. The music fits the moment prefectly.

The funeral was the moment that defined all the characters.

Smallville has some of the most beautiful and memorable funeral's of any tv show ive seen.

I think Lex's subplot was my favorite part of this episode. I really got the impression that Pamela's influence would have changed his life and I felt sorry for Lex since he missed out on that influence and saw her dying. He basically lost her twice.

It was a sad episode, sort of. I think one of my favorite scenes is the one where Clark finally expresses his feelings (beyond friendship) for Chloe in the talon, and he takes her hand and she's smiling, and than the show lana, who looks like she's going to cry. It bothers me, because whenever Lana and Clark are happy Chloe's not, and whenever Chloe and Clark are happy Lana's not, and neither of them try to get him when the other one isn't dating him; it's like they have some sick competition going on, or at least in the first couple of seasons. Not anymore.

I don't get how Clark didn't realize that Chloe liked him until this episode. Didn't Ryan tell him that back in "Stray"?

Its obvious Clark just doesn't get it.

I loved this episode, the TK was great. The funeral was great and so was the song.
I think Justin is in Belle Reeve.

How would they keep him there? Justin could always take someone's keys and get himself out.

He was a great telekinetic cause most telekinetics use hand gestures for their powers but he didn't. It showed how powerful he was.

i just wonder why justin doesn't just draw the comic strip with his telekinesis, he does it for the picture of chloe.

I guess cause the TK could never replace his hands so he was still mad.

though i do understand why he was still sad that he lost the function of his hands, I think having telekinetic powers would be so much better. i would be happy.

This has been bugging me for some time now and I had to comment here. In the 1st season during the episode "Crush" there was a song played at the start of the episode during the elevator scene where the man in the elevator dies.
The song playing is a fast rock song where the vocals sound alot like Rob Zombie.(But it isn't Rob Zombie).
This song is not listed on ANY of the song lists for the episodes.
The songs listed include....
"You and I" by Micah Green
"40 to 5" by Leave the World
"Nothing To Do" by Bottlefly
"Light In Your Eyes" by Louise Goffin
"2001 Spliff Odyssey" by the Thievery Corporation
"Time After Time" by Eva Cassidy
It's obviously not Micah Green,Louise Goffin or Eva Cassidy from a first look. And after listening to the other three songs by Bottlefly,Thievery corp and Leave the World I can say for 100% it is not them either. Thievery corp for instance is only insturamental and the others aren't it either.
This means that the song was never listed on this episode.
If anyone has the DVD of that episode. Could you please skip to that part of the episode and listen to the song and tell me who you think it is?
Here is a small sample of the song itself from the episode I mentioned.

The funeral scene was beautiful and although the FOTW storyline wasn't great, it was good enough. I like the kissing scene between chloe and brody. it looked so cool.

I loved this episode. This is one of my favorites from Season 1, one of my favorite Chlark episodes and Justin may just be my favorite freak of the week... next to Jodi from Craving and Samantha from Fanatic hahaha!
I loved this episode!!! :D It was full of good stuff... And the kiss between Chloe and freaky Justin was great! As was the Chlark hand holding... :)

I love their reccurring placement of Clark next to angels at these funerals. Lana sees him standing next to one in this episode and his mom sees him standing by one at his dad's. The shots are very powerful and certainly intentional (you can see the look on Martha's face as she watches him)
A MAN OF REASON!

This is one of the episodes that I initially missed. But after viewing it seemed pretty good. The funeral scene was outstanding, and instantly brought me back to "Reckoning"(although technically this was the first funeral of the two). Although I'm a Clarker, the Clana moment in the end almost makes me wish they were able to work it out. The Chlark moments were pretty good too. The FOTW didn't really impress me,but he was adequate enough. From the way the Clex ship is in the begining, you would never think they would end up being arch rivals!
A good episode none the less! :)

saw this episdoe the other day and it was pretty good.
from what i could tell though, but not 100% sure is that Lana was going to talk to Whitney to break up with him, but what is confusing is that she said he has never been nicer to her before, but I think Lana wanted to break up with him because she saw how close Clark and Chloe were getting. When she saw the two of them in the Talon holding hands and heard the speech about Clark deciding to stay friends with Lana, but actually "going for it" with Chloe really got her upset IMO. Also at the funeral scene at the end when they are looking at eachother and seeing them in the last episode really brings it almost full circle with their relationship.
I love that song too, Time After Time
the only thing I didnt like about this episode was the lack of funny parts. Usually the first seasons have some very funny and very awkward moments, but hey, its all grizzle

i didnt enjoy this episode.
it makes me mad when a bad guy gets into one of the smallville girls pants and nobody believes clark when he tries to tell them that the guy is bad.
they just say he's "jealous"

A regular episode, not so bad, though the freak was kinda weak and I didn't care about Lex's old nanny, at least here's where the Chlark begins.

Yeah I tend to get annoyed when that happens. Same thing in Dichotic and Magnetic.
Overall I liked that episode, but that's mainly because I'm a huge Adam Brody fan. Although this episode clearly isn't his best work.

Smallville is a show of tremendous highs and lows. The end of this episode is the pinnacle of Smallville, and is one of the reasons I fell in love with the show. This is one of the first episodes I saw, and the last scene blew me away. The music fit perfectly, but the acting was perfect, from everyone involved. Clark standing in the rain, Lana looking back, Whitney mourning his father...
It is without a doubt my favorite scene in Smallville's run. Jonathan Kent's funeral was tragic and beautiful as well, but the funeral in this scene just blew me away. Whenever I wonder if Smallville is 'quality' television, I go back to this scene and the end of Vengeance, and I remember how powerful a Superman story can be.
In other news: I really hated the old 'Clark's just jealous' storylines, because every time this came up, the guys inevitably tried to kill the girls and Clark always saved them, and they never figured it out.

I thought this was one of the better written Freak of the Week episodes of the season. I mean, it helped that they had Adam Brody playing the character, since he's a pretty good actor, but I also liked the progression of his storyline. They had a pretty big focus on him compared to some of the other less-explicitly-explained FOTWs, and his relationship with Chloe was pretty cool, too. I LOVED when Pete told Clark he needed to take off his Lana-blinders, and start noticing that Chloe liked him, too. He was SOOOOOO jealous when he saw the two of them together, and it sets up a perennial pattern for Chloe that we're still seeing in Season 8 -- she can't see Wall of Weird material when it's right in front of her, as has been the case with Sean Kelvin, Justin Gaines, Ian Randall, and now Davis Bloome/Doomsday. It also began one of the greatest Chlarky trilogies of episodes ever. YAY for old-school Chlark!

lol, I think it's more like how can we stall Clana even more, oh I got it make Lana decide to go after Clark but at the last minute let's kill her current BF's dad so she feels stuck in the relationship a little longer, that should at least get us through the first part of Season 2 until Tina Greer makes a re-appearence.
Just recently rewatched S1, and I am not sure if this Hothead or Craving is the worst episode of the Season.

The funeral moment was really heart touching, Telekinesis power is very well known and interesting topic, I was happy to see Clark building up his relation ship with chloe this time, I think she deserves him...she is very nice.. and ofcourse Clark deserves Lano!!
Cool episode, the ending is the one of bests of this season!!

To this day, having watched Season 1-9 many, many MANY times. The funeral scene in Crush is one of the very best scenes in smallville history.
The song choice, slow-mo camera work, the drama, the rain. It all just works to make a very beautiful and touching scene. It reminds me in a way to the Rabid scene in Season 9. (maybe its the rain)
I love the way that scene, without words, tells us that Clark and Lana cannot be together right now, even though they both obviously REALLY want to be together.
And Chloe sees it all. Poor Chloe.
(I haven't thought poor Chloe in a long time.)

I actually prefer Clana to Chlark big time in season 1. I know there are a lot of Chlark fans in the early days, but I can't get into it. He's always in love with Lana.

I hate that the girls of this show are always falling for murderous and or crazy freaks.
I like the telekinesis power, but I think this episode could have been better. 6/10

I can't help but to feel this is one of my favorite episodes of the season. I loved the FOTW and I was never an Adam Brody fan. Killing off of the greatest principal to ever live was so sad especially when there was a twist to it. Looks like Chloe was the first to develop the falling in love with the crazy meteor freak even before Lana got into it.
