Clark's powers are transferred to another young man, Eric Summers (Shawn Ashmore). As this young "Superboy" gets known (for better or for worse), Clark comes to term with the fact that he no longer has powers. Plus, the storyline with Victoria Hardwick concludes.

My second favorite episode of season one. This is probably the best Clark centric episode they have done in terms of him acting like Superman. He gave up his own safety to go after Eric. Putting aside his own needs for the greater good is textbook Supes. It also had awesome effects with the parking lot brawl, and fantastic dialogue. Some of my all time favorite lines are in this episode.

"I'd stop people like you" in response to Eric's question about what Clark would do with power

"Even though Eric has my abilities, I still think of them as my responsibility".

"Your gifts may be a part of you, but they don't define you". - Johnathan to Clark

leech is definitely one the best episodes of season 1. i liked how clarks powers were traded with eric by the lightning bolt. it was awesome! plus it showed how clark would react to life without his abilities. one of my favorite scenes is when eric is going crazy in the school parking lot beating up on his crushes boyfriend with that "Bonecracker" song in the background and when he throws clark into the car, that was so crazy!

Probably my second favorite episode of season 1 next to Stray.

Ok, I just watched this the other day (after owning Season 1 for about 6 months). I stayed away from Leech for a long time because I knew Clark lost his powers to some other guy and I hate stories about superheroes losing their powers. Ugh! So I skipped over it time and again as I watched all the rest.
Well, after seeing it I have to say: wow!
That was a good episode.
Clark was amazing and Shawn was excellent as Eric. It was wonderful how Clark finally had his "normal" but had to give it up to take his powers back.
And it had that great line, brilliantly delivered by Welling
"maybe we can go out to the parking lot and you can hit me with your car!".
Just a really good episode and I'm glad I finally watched it.

Victoria: We could've been great together Lex..
Lex: I plan on beeing great all by myself.

Brilliant episode. It was good to see Clark so happy, to bad for him it couldn't last.

"maybe we can go out to the parking lot and you can hit me with your car!".

That line cracks me up every time. The way Tom delivers that with the sarcasm is great.

and when Lex tells Victoria that if she considerd sleeping with him a job he would hate to think of what that makes her was great

Many great and humorous lines came from this episode.

This episode had some of the best lines:

Eric: What would you do if you had this power to do anything?
Clark: I'd stop people like you.

Victoria: It was just good business.
Lex: You call sleeping with me business. Tsk. I hate to think what that makes you.

Clark: Did you come by to make sure I was hurt?

Clark: Maybe we can go out in the parking lot so you can hit me with a car?

Victoria: We could've been great together.
Lex: I plan on being great all by myself.

Great episode, I loved when Iceman stole Superman's powers and just how they did it. It was a new and fresh idea.

It's totally believable because Kryptonite does insane things to people at random, but with a lightning bolt...it really brought the story up a notch. No one know's what lightning is capable of.

Bonus: "Asylum" because Eric comes back with a few other past villains and he "leeches" Clarks powers again.

Most of season 1 was about random FOTW, but Eric was more. He showed us the curruption that would easily come with Kryptonian powers. It was great!

This episode was great, it was a cool way to get his powers. I like what he was wearing when he had the boom-box. He was very arrogant though.

I wonder can anybody do what Eric does to get Clark's powers, cause if they can he isn't really a freak and they shouldn't hold him in Belle Reave. I would take those powers so fast if I could.

But the human body can't handle Clark's powers for an extended period of time. It takes its toll.

That's why I think Eric will die from a heart attack by the age of 28.

Interesting Firebunny. I never really thought about that. Then again though I have heard a arguement that Eric would not get a health problems because since he couldnt get near the gren k that must mean his body was changed to where he is like Clark while Jonathan might of just got the powers but would still be human and that is why it affected him so terribly.

Anyway though still interesting.

It's actually been implied in "Asylum" that Eric is the only one that can trade powers with Clark. When Jonathan and Jeremiah got Clark's powers they had a heart attack and went into a coma, respectively. However, Eric had his powers much longer and he healed fast. Maybe his actual power is that he's a parasite that can steal powers from other meteor freaks.

The song by stained at the begining of the show is a great touch. Showed the kind of family life he had way before we see it.

That's kind of what I think. A human body can't handle it for a long time, and Jonathon is a prime example of that.

I don't know if Eric will die by 28, but if he had the powers for a few months, it probably would take a toll.

I beleive that Eric leeched his anatomy and kryptonian DNA while leeching his powers.
The thing with Jeremiah and Johnathan was they were kind of supercharged, but not changed biologically, thats why they couldn't take it.

Good point.

I just remembered that at the end Eric was like lying there like
"So cold...." then he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance

I love this episode. It's definitely my favorite of season 1. Shawn Ashmore does a great job as Eric Summers. He really shows how corrupt a person can be when they receive that kind of power. I also liked all of the memorable lines in this show. I won't repeat what has already been said but what about these two:

After Clark tells Eric he would stop people like him Eric responds with, "nothing on this earth can stop me". I love that line and the way Shawn delivers it.

After Clark gets his powers back, Jonathon tells him how special he is because he has all these powers and they never corrupted him like they did Eric. Clark responds by saying, "that's because Eric did'nt get my two best gifts, you and mom".

I guess shawn ashmore as a mutant just doesn't fair well with his parents, whether he has superman powers or ice powers, his parents just won't acept him. poor shawn.

Not nessesarily. The reason that I think Johnathan was diffrent from Eric was becuase they were two diffrent cricumstances.

Johnathan was a human, just given Kryptonian powers. The human body can handle this.

Eric essentially became a Kryptonian. So his body could handle it.

This is a great episode, even if they did steal the plot from L&C:TNAoS.

I love how Clark learns to take joy in being without powers, like when the played basketball.

Jimmy Olsen is Shawn Ashmore's twin brother. They look alike but I can tell them apart. Just a FYI.

On of the best episodes in season one, and one of my favs.

I love Eric Summers, I think is one of the best FOTW's, plus we get the conversation where Lex practically tells Clark that he knows about his abilities. If Clark would have told him the truth here, everything would've been sooo diferent...

That's interesting that you say that, because everytime I watch this episode (and that is quite often, because it's one of my all time favourites) I'm wondering about that, too.

If Clark would have opened up to Lex in the scene where he works on the fence, what would have happened? I really felt sorry for Lex, when he almost begs Clark to tell him the truth, to not holding back anything from him as he's his best friend.

Lex didn't have any best friend in his life ever and I believe he really wanted to be Clark's friend. And if something like that would happen to me, I mean, knowing for sure, that your friend is hiding something and doesn't tell you inspite of claiming all the time he is your best friend.....well, I would be dissapointed so much, too. How can you not be???

I'm afraid to say that Clark keeping his secret from Lex actually is one of the reasons, why Lex becomes evil.
How can he not? Neither his parents gave him love, nor did he get any from friends.
He always suspected Clark to have powers, and he got a lot of prove for that, but I guess he thought, Clark was a meteor freak.

We all know, that Lex has to become Clark's /Superman's nemesis, but when you watch Smallville, especially the first seasons, you can't help to wish sometimes, that it would have another end to their relationship.

I actually believe, they could have been the best friends ever, too.

Great lines! MR has an astonishing way of delivering them. He's smirking but serious at the same time.

Yup, that's the beauty of the early seasons of Smallville. TPTB really did great in that area, making us believe that it could've ended differently.

Although this was a great episode, I still have problems with Eric's character. Don't know if it was the acting... but something didn't do it for me. Anyway, I'm just glad it's Aaron that plays Jimmy...

This is a great episode if not much fun. It shows the impact abusive parents can have on their children. It's sort of like... what if Martha and Jonathan weren't supportive? What if they treated Clark like a freak?

It's also nice to see Clark getting a taste of being "normal." His joy at losing basketball was adorable. :D

Chloe got her first byline in the SV ledger!!! :D

As far as Lex/Clark friendship goes I think that Lex was being honest in "Hug" when he said that friendship was a fairytale. That power and fear are the best you can hope for. Makes me want to cry but... deep down Clark's refusal to wield his power and influence the world would frustrate Lex to the point of hatred.

I think of Duncan. Duncan didn't want to use manipulation to subdue his enemies and Lex snapped. Poor Lex. He knows Clark loves him but... he doesn't BELIEVE it. And Clark is right... knowing that Clark was a guy just trying to do the right thing SHOULD have been enough for Lex.

It was interesting to see Clark without his powers I could understand him enjoying being normal including feeling pain. But again I get annoyed by the fact that Clark won't tell his closest friends his secret, everything could of actually gotten better if they kept it a secret. "Superboy" showed that Clark truly is a greater person as he wouldn't use powers in anger or revenge.

Fantastic episode. Just watched it for the first time in awhile last night. All this talk about S1 lately made me break out the DVD's.

Clark was more like Superman in this episode than we have seen him over the course of the whole show. He takes responsibility, he is unselfish, and heroic. "I'd stop people like you." That says it all and is one of my favorite lines from the whole series when Eric asks him what he would do if he had powers. It was also good to see Clark experience what it was like to be normal. Definitely one of my favorite episodes of S1 and easily on my top 10 list for the whole show. Not to mention the fact that it is funny to see Aaron Ashmore's twin brother Shawn playing a psychotic considering the fact that Aaron played Jimmy Olsen on the show.

My only gripe is the Kryptonite factor.

1) Kryptonite is lethal only to those who are from Krypton. Whether Clark loses his powers or not, he is still Kryptonian. It is later revealed in Asylum that Kryptonite effects Eric. He isn't Kryptonian. He absorbs Clark's powers, not his DNA.

This episode SO deserves 10 rock scavenger hunts out of 10!!!! I LOVE "Leech!" It ranks as one of my top 5 episodes this season! Eric Summers was a cool character who got a much deserved return appearance in Season 3's "Asylum." I find it really funny now that his twin brother ended up becoming Jimmy Olsen in later seasons of Smallville. It was cool to see Clark powerless for the first time, and the message that not just ANYONE would use Clark's powers in a truly heroic way shows what separates him from everyone else.
