A young girl (Amy Adams) goes on a meteor-rock shake diet and becomes somewhat of a fat-sucking vampire...

Dr. Steven Hamilton (Joe Morton) is introduced in this episode.

I liked this episode. I am not sure of why but I liked it. This was one of the best Pete centered episodes. Not to mention of the few.

Hey I thought it was cool that the FOTW, Amy Adams is Oscar nominated for her role Junebug, saw her on Conan

The first episode where Pete is a major part of the story.

Do you reckon the guy who was mean to her and got fat sucked had to wear like extra 'fat?' Cos she sucked the fat out of him and he was all ghastly and bony.

Chloe mentioned that he was in a coma and the deer didn't survive long without it's fat so i'd say he's dead.

I almost hated this one. A top least liked episode for me, the idea was cheesy as heck and carried off horribly. Since when does her mouth get really wide from the Kryptonite? Was just lame and can't say I enjoyed it :/

The story was loosely based off the Stephen King novel Thinner.

While i didn't like the FOTW or the story around her, there are some parts in this epsidoe that i just really loved! Like the part where lana goes over to the kents to drop off a produce order, and clark comes in carying like 4 or 5 baskets of apples and is telling his dad how he jammed the post past the granit, and lana is like "...impressive", and then he says ".....well, I had a sledge hammer....". Omigosh, how i laughed. and she didn't even question the enormous amount of weight he was carrying (the apples) with no effort at all. so funny!

and the end where he sets up the little drive in movie theatre at his house, how cute was that. very.

this is probably my least favorite smallville episode ever. i didn't like it at all. imo, it crossed the line between just gross and wierd enough and too gross and wierd.

I loved this episode. it was very interesting. I dont think it was gross at all. if you want gross then watch the X-files episode 2shy that has the same fat-sucking vampire type story. i thought the giant mouth looked cool but it didn't really serve a purpose. she didn't swallow the deer whole or anything so i dont really get why it had to be so big.

The guy who got the fat sucked out of him, his name was Dustin. In a later episode when Clark is walking in the hospital, one of the rooms has hte name.. Dustin written on it. Anyone else notice it?

This is one of my favorite freak of the week episodes. Amy Adams is great at making Jodie a real person, a likeable person... I really rooted for her through the whole episode.

If only... Jodie and Pete... so cute... alas she became a fat sucking monster...

Really cool way to tackle the issue of eating disorders...

Chloe and Lex meet for the first time... Chloe is oh so respectful. Very different than when Lana and Lex meet. It's almost like they are peers or old friends. They sort of skip the formalities.

Lexana at Lana's b-day bash in the Luthor mansion. He tells Lana he spent 18 years of Luthor Christmas parties in the coat room. :) I bet he never told anyone else that. :)

Clark's birthday present to Lana is Clana heaven! :)

I pretty much liked every episode in Season 1.

A great quote from this movie:

"I can't believe it" - Chloe

"Get over it, chicks dig me" - Pete

"She lost all that weight over night" - Chloe

Not my favorite ep, plot or FoTW, but I can watch it...and that's why I just did it

One of the few things that I actually liked it was that deals with the eating disorders, and I think that's pretty cool, besides the silly idea of the kryptonite milkshakes :(

Plus, here's where Lex starts to get curious about the freaks :D

This may seem like a strange question but, When exactly is Lana's birthday? I mean here in season one it would placed in November. Then in the season four premiere Jason said Lana's birthday was the next day which would put it in August or September.

Did anyone else pick this up or am I going crazy?

Hydra

The only thing is that every season takes place roughly over a year. But that doesn't mean that they always focuse on the same part of the the year that the epside aired in.

maryjanewatson
04-14-2008, 03:22 PM
you're not crazy, wildenchantress, they messed up on that. There is no way to explain the time difference, so the only conclusion is that they forgot, and didn't think to check it.

That too. Smallville's reputation for consistency with its continuity is less than admirable.

maryjanewatson
04-15-2008, 04:04 AM
yup. I mean, this isn't event he biggest thing either. Another one that really gets me is Chloe's age when her mom left, and how her mom left. every time they mentioned it, she was a different age, and the story would change.

ridiculous. If I had my own tv show that had a big fan base like smallville, I would do everything in my power to keep things like these consistent. It makes the story that much more believable.

Before I got round to watching Progeny, I read a lot about fans getting annoyed at Chloe's history - or at least the dodgy chronology of it - but it has never bothered me because I can't remember what we had previously been told! Any chance of a summary maryjanewatson?

you know, I am actually in the process of re-watching the entire series(I'm making an ultimate smallville music collection, and am watching for songs I like). I just finished the first season. While I have an idea of the ages and everything, I will make detailed notes as I go along. I will definitely let you know as I go through the episodes. but somethings I can tell you for sure are that the first age was 5, and Chloe's mom had just left, no reason, and no saying goodbye. Chloe had also said something along the lines of "I know where my mom is, Clark. the difference is she doesn't want me!" I'm pretty sure that was said in "lineage" (season 2), which i will be watching here in the next few days. And even though I JUST watched the first season over the last 2 weeks, I can't for the life of me remember if her mom was mentioned in the first season. I must be tired (it's 2 am!). If anyone can remember a mention in the first season, let me know.

as for the enchanted thing, I love to tell people "I knew of her when she was just a fat-sucking vampire. She's come so far!" :rotfl:
But i do like that movie, I thought it was cute. :D

Cheers mjw! I appreciate your efforts. For clarification (and because I haven't seen Progeny since it aired), does Chloe think in S6 that her mother still didn't want her - prior to meeting her in a non-catatonic state? In defence of the script writers, the opening of Progeny is not necessarily Chloe's memory of the her mother's leaving (ie. her memory of her mother not saying goodbye could have been corrupted over time). I look forward to your continued research! :)

I think it was the 4th season when they first said her mother was in a mental institution. Chloe started to worry b/c she said that her mother's mental illness was hereditary.

Lex Dance

Yeah I think that was Scare, but possibly even before that. In fact the more I think of it, Chloe may have discovered that her mother is in a mental institution in S3. Was there not a tearful conversation between Chloe and Clark at the end Truth? Certainly her fear of the illness being hereditary is discussed in Scare.

Yup. That was a nice touch.

Call me crazy but I like that episode. I know it's cheesy and all but it fascinates me. Amy Adams did a great job and her cravings looked real (they made my stomach turn a few times). I think it was great that she realized on her own that what she was doing was bad. She wasn't a bad person at all and when Clark wasn't able to stop her, she saw herself in the mirror and realized what a monster she had become. I found she was a very considerate FOTW.

Plus, it's nice to see Pete get some female attention, 'cause you know... chicks supposedly dig him.

I like this episode, but it kind of makes me sad. I mean, people made fun of Jodi for being overweight, so her life obviously was difficult. She put in the effort to try and lose weight, drank a meteor-infected shake and lost about 40 lbs in a matter of two days, and then became a fat sucking vampire who was always starving. Either way, she didn't get the happiness she wanted.

Meh. "Craving" sucked, big time, LOL, and yes, that pun was intended. :p There were a few things I liked. First of all, Amy Adams is a great actress. I could feel for her character to a certain extent, but the fat-sucking vampire concept left something to be desired, and that's putting it lightly. It was also cool that Pete had a couple of nice moments, and of course, since this episode introduced Dr. Hamilton, that's a plus. Still, I could only give this 2 roadkill deer out of 10.

In this episode Chloe offers to help Clark come up with a birthday present for Lana if he will come and investigate the fat sucked deer with her. Clark says something like he wants Lana's gift to be unique and Chloe makes a face and says she hopes it's not as "unique" as the gift Clark got her for her birthday the year before. LOL!

What do you think Clark got her? Is it ever mentioned?

...

Does anyone know of a fanfic that answers this question? :D

Oh yes! I love seeing Lex looking up Chloe's Torch website. And seeing him in front of her Wall of Weird.

I think the implication is that Chloe, being the sardonic character she is, is referring to a very uninspiring, uninventive and homogenous choice of present: a "best friend" mug etc. :)

"Getting your morning Lana fix?"

Why does Clark look through his telescope at Lana? It seems like using his X-Ray vision (discovered three episodes earlier) would be easier.

Later on in season two, he states that he does not use X-Ray to invade people's privacy. But he doesn't mind using a telescope to spy?

Gave it a 2, possibly the worst episode of the season. Who the heck wouldnt notice a girl losing 60lbs in a day and not question it; I know we have to suspend some disbelief but that was just one that I couldnt. Plus the fat sucking was just so nasty; and how DARE you murder a deer!

This is my favorite bad Smallville episode. Although the story of the fat-sucking meteor freak was a bit out there, I attribute my liking for this episode to AMY ADAMS! :D

I adore Amy Adams. I loved her in this episode, in Enchanted, Doubt, The Fighter, Julie & Julia, Night at the Museum 2, and EVERYTHING ELSE! :)

As for this episode, I liked the other plotline about Lana's party. The ending with the movie projector is one of my favorite Smallville episode endings.

But rewatching past seasons makes me miss Lois and especially TESS! :(

Yeah that would be interesting haha.

I decided to rewatch "Craving" again today. And I still feel the same way I did the last time I saw it (a couple of years ago) and all the previous times. It's still in one of my least favorite Smallville episodes of all time, and quite possibly the worst (in my opinion) episode of Season 1.

I always get a kick out of seeing Amy in things now that I saw her first in Smallville and she has done quite well for herself, but for me this episode overall is still weak despite that. I think both Amy and the principal cast are still finding the feet acting-wise or with their characters--just as Smallville and the writing team are still trying to find their stride at this point so early in the series.

There was some interesting back story elements brought in terms of Lex and Lana, etc, but other than that the episode didn't do much for me. The subject matter doesn't help either--they did a fat sucking person on The X-Files a few years or so before this, and I didn't like the idea then either.

I respect that everyone will see things differently, it just didn't do much for me personally.

Haha, I watched this episode the other day with my brother and told him, "Oh, that's the woman that's going to play Lois Lane in the new Superman movie." He was like, "Really?! Princess Giselle?"
And he was quite surprised when I told him she's an Oscar nominated actress. He really needs to get with the times.

Anyway, back to the episode, not a fan. I had to look away when she started eating the deer. Definitely one of the worst episodes, if not the worst episode of the season.

This episode was my least favorite season 1 episode and now that im watching it again its still my least favorite out of the first 7. I like how Clark and Lanas relationship in in episode went up as it shows that they will be there for each other always. Lex finding out that he has powers (well kinda) and that he starts getting in the meteor rocks shows the start of his obession of the things surrounding him. Pete finally got a plot in this episode although its a crappy episode. The Jodie plot was just terrible. It was not interesting at all and it was very disgusting-It was like the Sean plot from Cool except that was at least decent.

So ill give this episode a: 6/10
