Smallville High's football coach has a hot temper. Meanwhile, Lionel Luthor comes to town, Lana wants to quit cheerleading, and Clark wants to play football.

Hiro Kanagawa makes his first appearance as Principal Kwan. He was originally supposed to appear in the series pilot, but his scenes were cut.

One of my all time favorite episodes. I can't get enough of this one. First of all, the music in this episode is fantastic. The song at the very beginning "Renegade Fighter" and the song "Motivation" by Sum 41 played when Clark shows off in practice are two of the best songs they used on the show. You also have the great swordfighting sequence between Lex and Lionel, Coach Walsh (one of my favorite FOTW's), and one of the only Clana scenes I actually love with the joint scream at the end. There is also some cool action in this episode. You had Clark saving Principal Kwan from blowing up in the car, as well as Clark whooping CW's ass by kicking him threw the glass. Good stuff.

I really liked this episode but I always laugh when toward the end when Jonathan gets Clark away from the swaet box with the kryptonite in it and suddenly he Coach comes back and knocks Jonathan out. I laugh becasue that is the last time we see Jonathan in that scene. When the coach sets the room on fire you would of thought Clark would of atleast made sure Jonathan was safe?

this is a very great episode! there are many things i like about it. first there is the coaches power of setting things on fire when he gets angry. i thought that was cool! I also liked how Clark went against his father and went for the football team. and how the water from the sprinklers in the football field turned to flames when the coach got mad. and in the end of the episode when Clark and the coach have the little showdown in the locker room. this episode is all around good!

Never really liked this one, but Ryan makes some good points above.

The scream scene at the end is VERY cute. I love the way Clark says, "On 3." It's so adorable, and they are very believable as high school students in this episode.

John Glover was great. We really got to see him in a major role since the pilot.

The coach's name was actually Walt Arnold, a nod to the character "Jack Arnold" that actor Dan Lauria played on The Wonder Years.

The coach was really dumb; cool powers though. The music at the beginning was great.

I agree, the coach was kind of freaky too :)

I think this is one of the worst episode of the season. There were a few scenes that were great but mostly i didn't really care. The coach did have an awesome power though.

I though this was an ok episode. I really like the jokes about Clark's genes and him being adopted and then walking through the fire and telling him it's in his genes. That was funny!

This was a great episode, one of the few full with all high school stuffs that I enjoy, and actually stand Lana

The scenes with MR and JG are just great, love the fencing scene, the first of many :D

The thing that I still don't undertand is if the coach died burned in his own flames or not? they never said what happened to him exactly

not sure if this has been mentioned or not but did anyone notice that when Clark first joins the football team and is at practice his jersey number is 89 the same year of when he came to Earth in the metor shower

I actually loved the scene at the end when lana and clark are screaming

Looking back, I find some of the parts of that episode quite ridiculous.

Lana's probably the worst waitress in history and later she ends up successfully running a coffee shop? That's believable.
When Clark is talking to the Coach in the sauna, he can feel the meteor rocks but he just stays there, threatning the Coach? Not a smart move Kent.

Aside from that, it was an okay episode. I'm not a fan of the football centered episodes but it's not a bad one. The best scene IMO is the one where Lex tells Lionel he cut the production cost by 70% instead of cutting the work force. Aw, Lex was so nice back then! You gotta love those Lexel scenes!

K's affect on CK changes over time. When he whos younger (pre bugboy) he could play with K around.. Changed development results in changed reaction. Hence his failure to respond to the K within the steam room.

I saw this eposide for the first time last night. Yeah I know it's been 7 years but i just saw it. That fire scene with Chole had me thinking about Candyman. It had me thinking about when Helen came out of the frie bald. Chole lucky.

I like this episode. Seeing Clark writhe around on the ground suffering the meteor effects. Is it wrong that I find that sexy?

^LOL!

I recently gained a new appreciation for this episode. My sister is obsessed with the TV show "Friday Night Lights." After watching a few of those episodes I watched "Hothead."

First of all I realized that the Football Coach of a winning high school football team, the star players, the cheerleaders... these people are all small town royalty.

That makes Chloe's investigation so much more high stakes and ballsy. She's taking on the Small royalty no holds barred.

It was also clever of the writers to put Coach Walt on the verge of making a career record of 200 wins or something. This give an explaination of why his powers would suddenly manifest after 12 years. He's under a lot of pressure.

I also loved Trevor... the kid that takes a risk and tells the truth about cheating. He's the unsung hero of the episode.

I'd always hated Hothead... but... now I really appreciate how good it is.

:lol::lol::lol:

I disolved into laughter when I saw your post, girl!

Anyway, I often think I don't like "Hothead", but when I watch it I realize how good of an episode it really is. Love the scene where Clark saves Chloe from the burning Torch office. (I'm a Chlarker. How could you tell? :p)

I love this epi!
I find it kinda funny and really cool...
Although I'm a Chlark shipper, I have to admit the clana scene at the very end was just fantastic, so cute. In fact, I considered myself a clana shipper back to the good ol' days...
Damn, I really miss old-school smallville.

Overall, I love Hothead a lot.

The Coach was dumb , but he had cool powers. I think the scene which Clark passes through the fire looks fake

This was a fun episode.

That coach was crazy. back in the days when FOTW episodes didn't suck. 8/10

Boring but it was kind of good because it had Clark and Lana trying to live their own lives and make their own decions even if it meant disobaying Nell and Johnathan.

I liked this episode, especially the moments with Clark and Lana, I do not know why I like Lana so much! I didn't care much for Clark joining the football team. The Coach was one mean coach, I can't believe any Coach would be THAT bad. I thought it was awesome Lana left cheerleading (I don't care much for cheerleaders! *looks at Heroes*). I like how Lex defied is EVIL father and doesn't fire anyone.

I gave "Hothead" 6 fire-spurting sprinkler heads out of 10. Clark's clash with Jonathan over being a part of the football team is an interesting recurring plot line for the show. Coach Walt Arnold was a fairly interesting character, though he wasn't the most cautious psycho criminal. :p Clark's first super-save of Chloe is a treat to watch, too. The scream at the end with Clark and Lana was a kind of clever way of ending the episode.

Anyone else notice the left handed QB throwing during the 200th game? Whitney is right handed.. :D

This is actually one of my favorite S1 episodes. Great music and Dan Lauria is outstanding as Coach Walt. Also, one of the few episodes where I enjoyed the Clana. The smiles in the Beanery after Lana spills the drinks and the scream on the field were great.

I enjoyed this episode. Clark is still struggling to fit in by wanting to play football. A good Freak of the Week as well. 7/10

Yeah that would be scaring. Funny thing is TW only a year younger then Fred Savage and Fred played a 14 year old back in 1990. Good thing Jason never had to deal with this coach.

Haha the coach really lets Pete have!

Coach: Look at Ross here, he doesn't have a lick of talent but he has a whole a lot of heart

Pete: Thanks....i guess....

Usually i think this episode is just ok. But now I think its pretty good even though its not better than the first two. Clark wanting to play football in this episode is a good plot as he just wants to fit in and be like us. Lana quiting cheerleading and being a waitress shows that shes not the girl everybody thinks she is. Lex cutting the budget instead of the workforce shows that at the beginning of the show that he had a really good heart and shows how his father manipulates him. Martha and Johnathan showing how they trust Clark shows how he becomes caring in the future and cares about humannity. Coach in this episode was cool by showing that his powers are now showing because of his rage and this is like the only show where I like how there is a villan with fire powers because its been overused so much

So I give this episode:8/10
