He eats, he molts, he mates. Beware Greg Arkin, the Bugboy (Chad Donella)... Plus, Clark grapples with whether or not to give Lana her necklace back.

This episode has really grown on me. When I saw this episode intially, it was one of my least favorites. Mainly I think it was because the Pilot was so awesome, and it made Metamorphosis seem weak by comparison. But now that time has passed, I watch this episode on occasion and I like it a lot more. It has actually become one of my favorite S1 episodes. The flying dream, JK's great line about breaking the law of gravity, the cool saving sequence where the truck blows up and Clark shields Whitney, Clark discovers his weakness to Kryptonite, etc.. A suprisingly good and underrated episode in my opinion.

The only thing I didnt like about this episode was the flying hints and stuff

What was the point in that?

I watch it now and wonder why was it never brought back up again??

Was there originally going to be more to the flying storyline but that was when the writters made up that rule about no flying in Smallville??

Oh, I have so much trouble watching this episode because I have an almostphobia about bugs. I have to fast forward through all the bug stuff and watch the rest, which is really pretty good.

I don't understand what happened to Greg at the end. Did his body separate into bugs?

I don't think he is dead. I loved this episode, I watch it a lot.
From what I observed, his powers are: Strength (jumping goes with strength), Agility, Reflexes, Adhesive skin (stick to walls), projects web from mouth.

Was that webs he projected from his mouth? I thought it was venom he used to kill his mother.

This too, is 1 of my favorite Season 1 episodes. Even though Whitney tied Clark up as a scare crow, Clark comes to Whitney's rescue. He super-speeds, grabs Whitney before the truck explodes, and saves Whitney's life. Who woudn't want to be a friend of Clark Kent. And who wouldn't want to be rescued by Clark Kent.

How strong do you think Greg was?
I know he wasn't as strong as Clark, but he probably had like 40% of Clarks strength.
He was a really unique villian.

i think he looked weak becouse hes a bug. They weight much less, so clark threw him around as a doll.

this episode wasent one of the best but ill do. The bug thing is a little... a little nah...

I hate Clark now,but I thought the ending of this episodes shows perfectly what kind of character Clark should be when he gives the Kryptonite necklace to Lana even though it keeps him away from her and he knows what it means to her. That's what Clark should be a nice and noble guy.

Any reason in particular why the Metamorphosis thread has a 5 star rating? ...

I really like the episode, and it definately grows on you. But it is definately not worthy of a 5 star rating.. LOL

I liked the part where they were up in the clubhouse and saying that they were both different. I wouldn't mind having Greg's powers, but the lifecycle has got to go.

That was stupid. If that really was a spider's ability, it should have come out of his ass.

True, but you have to think that he is a hybrid of human and insects. You dont see Spiderman's webs coming out of his behind.

That would be hilarious. i would love to hang off of buildings from my butt. think of all the press coverage. this episode isn't my favorite but the actor who played bug boy did a great job. i love the scene in the barn where he attacks JK.

^Bugboy did do a great job. I loved that he actually had a history with Clark and Pete. That they used to play with him when they were younger in his treehouse. :)
I actually liked the Lexana in this episode. I liked their dynamic. Lana doesn't react to Lex the way you would expect her too. She's not as fragile as people make her out to be. Lex and Lana never have that awkward lets put our best face on moment... they are always really frank with each other from the beginning. :) I like that.

Clark's hair is so dark in this episode.

ClareKent

I guess it was so dark because of the extensions he got

I just watched this episode entire for the first time  I never liked it much because of all the Whitney/Lana/Clark triangle, but it was pretty good after all.

I was kinda upset for the flying thing, it's like, why he could fly in the beggining, and now, that he has almost all of his powers developted he can't?

And the other thing that I'm dissapointed is that in the commentary by Al/Miles they hinted that Greg may not have died and it could it return, but never did

How could he "not" have died? He had a lead block fall on him and roaches go everywhere.

The guy who played Greg Arkin played a reporter for The New Republic in Shattered Glass.

This episode was funny with Lex trying to get revenge on Whitney for doing that prank on Clark, it looked like he knew Clark was having a reaction to the kryptonite though.

Ah, Lex playing matchmaker with Clark and Lana. Who would've though she'd end up marrying him years later!

The molting part of this episode is so disgusting. It freaks me out everytime. Bugboy really plays that scene well, for a second you believe he's truly tearing his skin out.

That episode made me wish Clark had not saved Whitney. He spent all of the following episodes taking credit for Clark's actions.

Maybe watching it when first broadcast this episode may look lightweight. Watching it with perspective may shed light on the original producers long term thoughts.

(1) 'my, haven't you grown up' from Lex in the horse barn scene indicates his attraction/lust/desire for Lana
(2) the first Chloe/Clark (plus Pete) investigation of something 'off'
(3) Clarks first failure to be seen as the hero from Lana's perspective
(4) the first humor - Kent's barn scene - Martha 'This coming from someone who has a space ship stashed in the storm cellar', JK's superb reaction
(5) Clark learning about Kryptonite's effect on his maturing body
(6) the first (accidental) death caused by Clark
(7) the first time that Chloe/Clark cross the legal boundary (getting into bug boy's house)

All these indicate some long term thinking that are only apparent in hind site. A story doesn't get told in one chapter.

Possibly my least fav of the entire SV series. Well, excluding Hero.

A good episode IMO. Starts right after Pilot ended. A great song when we're at Farmer's Market

Saw it again today :D

Awesome dream sequence with Clark flying over Smallville & into Lana's bedroom while she's sleeping ( creepy :D ), woke up when Lana spoke to him & floating above his bed. Martha yelled he should hurry & broke his bed...

Favorite scene is where Clark holds the lead box with Lana's necklace inside, & he sees how it affects him.

Creepiest scene is when Greg is in the shower peeling of his skin. Ew. That Greg fellow is one disgusting guy :D

A little foreshadowing when Lex talks about two guys in love with the same woman.... Clexana anyone :D

I didn't like the episode. Maybe because of the molting scene:p

But the Clark flying scene is cool

This was awful and Clark's hair was just bad. But I liked the scene at the end where Clark gave Lana her necklace back.

Like many of the early episodes, Metamorphosis was an excellent representation of what makes/made Smallville great. It's almost as classic as Pilot for me.

This episode was awesome, Greg's obsession with insects and Lana was very freaky! Greg reminded me of Spider-man in a way, except evil. I liked that Clark gave back Lana's necklace in the end, but I bet Lana thought it was Whitney. I give it a 8/10.

Blah. 3 out of 10 kryptonite-irradiated fireflies for this dung beetle of an episode. I know others like it quite a bit, but Greg Arkin was just too gross and creepy for me, with the spewing spiderwebs, molting skin, killing his mom and putting her in a cocoon... Just nasty!!!

It said in the Chloe Chronicles that hes all over smallville because hes basiclly the thousand bugs that scattered.

Another one of Clark friends that went bad. I imaging they may have been friends in that flashback from season 8. He did'nt really die did he. Wonder if they could use him again.

Does Chloe have to know every single detail about every single person and every single situation? She sounds like the National Enquirer when she does that.

Not a great follow-up to the Pilot, but still an interesting Freak of the Week. 7/10

I loved Clark in this episode as much as I did i the pilot. I think I much prefer Clark personality in earlier episodes than now circa S10. He just seems to jaded with all the backstabbers he has had to deal with. My favorite scene is Lana and Clark in the barn, it was just so beautiful although I dont understand why Lana didnt figure out Clark was snooping on her. Anyway, I have never been a fan of Greg but I did like seeing him back in Homecoming; atleast it is a little acknowledgement that all the crap Clark has been through has not been for nothing and some good actually came from it. Lex pimping Clark and Lana is just a little creepy to me; one I have never been on board this Lex is Clark's friend scenario and second why is this dude taking part in teenage love affairs? Not even teachers and counselors are that involved. Unfortunately looking back this is where it all started, the Lana is the love of every man in Smallville line of thinking began.

I started watching from season 1 again but I actually watched Homecoming straight after Metamorphosis because of Greg and also seeing Clark float at the start of the episode. I agree with your comments on Clark, I actually found TW acting to be better here than in the latest season! He seemed to smile more, have better emotions etc.

Definitely! This has been the problem I've had with his character for the past 5 seasons. He has become so jaded, serious, and all around no-fun to be around. The early season TW always portrayed him as humble, selfless, but at the same time a generally happy person.

Wow, this episode has really grown on me. When I started watching the show when I was eight I absoulutly hated this episode because it grossed me out but now I really like this episode and its one of my favorite episodes of season 1. Clark showing his limit to his invincibility and his being powers of flight is awesome and its wierd thinking that 10 years from then he would finally get the power. I also like how it shows how kryptonite cant go through lead. I like how in this episode Lana and Clark are showing to be really good friends and they are already starting to trust each other. Lex was cool in this episode dropping hints about how Whitney is being the bad boyfriend and that he helps Clark by giving him her necklace. Whitney matured in this episode as not only did he aplogize to Lana he also did to Clark also(even though he dident hear it.) Pete and Chloe were not shown in this episode very much but when they were they were shown to be good relible friends to Clark by beliving him about Greg. Like I said before when i watched this before when I was eight I was grossed out by this episode but now I think its really cool and now I like Greg alot now and im glad he came back for the 200th episode

So I give this episode:10/10
