A meteor shower hits the small town of Smallville; twelve years later, a young man named Clark Kent saves the life of Lex Luthor, and both of their lives are changed forever.

This is my 3rd favorite episode of the series (Commencment and Arrival are the 2 fave's)
I watch that episode and everything is different now. Even Jonathan's hair was different. For some reason I get caught up on that guy not being a blonde at the beggining of the series

are you sreious? john schnieder's hair wasn't blond at the beginning?

Nope. To me he seems to be more of a red head. That or maybe its just my eyes messing with me. But when I watch back on my dvds he is for sure not the bleech blonde he usually is.

i have never noticed that. i need to go back and re-watch some of the season 1 episodes. i just always assumed his hair was 100% blond. anyway pilot is one the best episode. thats where it all begins. and it kind of has a sense of freshness to it. or something like that

It's sorta strawberry blond, I think, in the Pilot. It's definitely a different hairstyle. Oddly, I think Jonathan looks older in the Pilot than he does in later episodes. maybe they experimented with his make-up?

I remember walking in NYC back in 2001. And I saw the poster for Smallville, which now adorns the cover of the first season DVD collection. I groaned. The Lois and Clark disappointment (its final season and a half, I enjoyed the first 2 very much) felt too near--and I really had no interest in another superman show. WB? Oh, great. More teenaged melodrama.
I turned into the episode anyway, because I am a Superman fan, and needed to see how they were destroying the mythos this time.
To my surprise, the program was GREAT. I loved the meteor shower, the FOTW was intriguing (Ah, the possibilities for FOTW--which they later over did, of course), THE BRIDGE SCENE!! Lex and Clark FRIENDS!!!??? This was interesting!
It was so exciting, and new, I couldn't wait until the following week. I was hooked at the pilot. This remains one of my favorite episodes for that reason. It's still quite solid, even after viewing episodes such as Memoria and Shattered.

is it true that another actress played Martha in the pilot?
OutlawAngel
02-10-2006, 03:48 PM
In the original unaired pilot yes there was another woman who played on the pilot but to me AoT makes the best Martha we could have.
Not that there was anything wrong with the other actress but when I see pictures of her from the original unaired pilot. I dont know she just didnt seem to be as believable in the role as Annette.

Is the unaired pilot available on the Season 1 DVD?
OutlawAngel
02-10-2006, 04:23 PM
Nope. I dont think you can buy the original or atleast not from stores. I hear its the same as the official episode but just with a different actress in AoT place
vyperman7
02-10-2006, 04:42 PM
I have seen the unaired Pilot, and everything is the same with the acception of a different actress playing Martha. The only thing they did for the official Pilot, was shoot the scenes where Martha is featured with AOT and then they inserted them.
Speaking of the Pilot in general, it is definately one of the best episodes of the show without a doubt. It did such a good job laying the groundwork for the rest of the show and did an effective job at introducing the characters.

My first episode as well. I have been watching on TV since day one. There are some people that got started with the DVD's or on TV in the later seasons.
I am still pissed though that they cut my all time favorite Clark scene from the final cut of the Pilot. You know where Clark speeds off to get to school? In the final cut of the Pilot, you see him take off from his house, go running through the field, then over the bus, through another patch of the field and ending up at the school.
My favorite scene(the one they cut) has TW speeding up into the screen for a closeup in the field. It is a rare find, and I love it because it shows so well that Clark can do whatever the hell he wants. The only time it was aired, was in a promo for the Pilot. They have a quicker version at the very end of the S1 credits though. Luckily a friend of mine on here has access to rare trailers and promos and was able to hook me up with the promo with the scene in it. I have been able to use the scene in several of my music vids.

If only you saw the scene from the promo that aired before the Pilot. There is a scene that I described above that shows Clark speed up into a close up and then speed off through the field to catch the bus. It was only a three second clip. I don't know why they cut it.

There are two different versions of the clip.
There is the one in the opening credits, and there is another version that aired in a few promos for the Pilot. I don't know why they cut it out of the Pilot though. It is such a great scene.

How was the scene in the promos different from the one that appeared in the opening credits?
vyperman7

It was just shot differently. I like the one from the promos better because it comes in at a better camera angle. Both scenes get the same point across, but one looks different than the other.
I just bought a DVD from Smallville. Its just a DVD of the first episode and that is all that is on it except for some extras like on the DVD sets. In the scene where Lex first hits Clark on the bridge after he pulls him out of the water and is there talking with Lex.
Lex asks him if he is ok and Clark says yes then Clark falls over and faints. On my DVD set the scene ends with Clark looking up at the bridge then it fades out. Which one did it show when it originally aired?
I didn't get to see first season of Smallville until it came out on DVD :\ :( Then I finally got a channel that had it.

I recently watched this episode again and can't believe the things I forgot about the episode. The meteor shower effects looked very similar to the movie Armageddon.
Lex's line to Clark "I could have sworn I hit you." Clarks says something like if you did, I would have been dead.
Clark tried shredding his arm but as he is made of steal, so nothing happened. That scarecrow meteor freak tried killing Clark by driving him into the wall but that didn't work either!
Overall it was a great pilot episode, just a shame of some of the poor filler episodes that we have had to watch.

The rare scene from the Pilot that I was refering to can now be scene in my avitar. I edited it a different way though. I combined the overhead shot of the field, into the close up scene in the corn. In the rough cut of the Pilot Clark races up into the screen, and then chases after the bus. It sucks that the scene was cut out.
Luckily I was able to get Rose (Lexgirl) to make this avitar for me. I am a good editor, but I suck at things like making avitars and computers in general.
There have been many awesome Clark scenes over the years. But this one is still my favorite. I just love the way it was shot.

A cracker of an episode, this one never loses its magic.
It's nice to see a sweet, innocent, high voiced Lana- a great male friend in Pete- Chloe looking all cute (She's beautiful now of course) and Clark finding out the truth from Jonathan.
Also, I love that Lex and Clark are friends here, in the first 5 episodes there aren't any lies to Clark from Lex and it's a solid friendship. I guess he had to turn evil though!
To this day, I still hate the FOTW in this episode, he was just boring.

I finally had the chance to see the Pilot, I must of seen almost every episode except that one until last night. I knew what happened, just never saw it.
I loved the episode, it was great!
CK- “You’re saying that I’m from another planet, and the spaceship is in the attic.”
JK-“Well, actually it’s in the cellar.”
That had me laughing, also when Clark was talking to Lana's parents in the graveyard, "What's that Mr. Lang?.." Just the way he said it was hilarious.
What a great episode.

I think Mr. and Mrs. Kent just told him he was special and he accepted it. That just shows you that what kids want most is love... And its your teenage years that you really start to question things... so they just told him straight up the first time he thought to question his "specialness" :) That's my take on it anyway :)
I love the Pilot Episode. It sets up the Series so well. Well done!
Superman Returns was really heavy (too heavy I thought) on the Christ imagery but it caused me to see the whole scarecrow thing as in allusion to that too... Done much better... IMO...
I loved seeing Pete and Chloe having fun at the dance. I loved their deleted scene too. heeheehee ;)
Martha is so different to me in the Pilot than she is now... I don't know... like something really bad happened to her. She just seems less innocent. I'm eager to watch all the seasons and see the transition. But it's probably the miscarriage. I just never realized how much she changed.

Probably one of the best episodes out there, and not just coz it's the puilot...It's very well written and would make any station want to air it...now if only that'd happen to Mercy Reef...
Anyway,s I own both the season 1 dvd pilot and the unaired pilot, and the only differences I can notice are that they cut some bits of scenes out, and that Martha's acting is different...

Hi everyone! I´m new to the forum and english is not my native language, so I apologize before for any faults.
Today I watched the first episode again on DVD and there was something conspicuous. After Lex´accident Jonathan walks away with Clark. Clark has a red blanket around his shoulders underneath his jacket, but it doesn´t look like a blanket... it looks like a cape! :D
Did anyone else see that? It was only 1-2 seconds.

This is one episode of Smallville that I could watch repeatedly and never get tired of. That innocence and fresh faced enthusiasm that all the characters have in the pilot seems a distant memory now. Compared to this season it's as if it came from an entirely different show, which in a way it is I suppose.
It's funny when you think about chaos theory and karma and how a single action can set forth a chain reaction of events that never would have come to pass if not for that first stone being cast.
Of course, without the meteor shower there would be nothing out of the ordinary about Smallville. But, the defining moment for the series would have to be that day on the bridge when Lex Luthor introduced his Porsche to Clark Kent. Their friendship was born out of tragedy, founded upon a lie. What if Clark had just been honest about what happened that day on the bridge? I believe it is this deception, coupled with the Luthor breeding, that lays the ground work for the man that Lex would become.

Having started watching Smallville from season 4 onwards I just saw the Pilot tonight.
Its amazing how much has changed. Welling looks like a little boy compared to now. He's really filled out since then. I was surprised how skinny he was, he must have put on 20 solid pounds since then.
Lana looks like a baby too. understandable since Kruek was probably about 17 or 18 back then.
It surprised me that I actually felt sad that Lex and Clark aren't friends anymore, and that Johnathan Kent is no longer around. It was nice seeing Lana go up to Clarks loft in the barn for the first time. The first of many to come.
I think the producers have done a great job developing the show when I look back at this pilot.

I'm not going to read 5 pages to see if anyone else noticed this but I watched the pilot again last night and noticed that when Lionel was in the helicopter with boy Lex the headlines on his paper read. Queen Industries CEO missing, presumed dead.
I didn't know what that meant at the time ( 6 years ago) but now with green arrow and Oliver coming into the scene we know what it means. It ties in the future hero and the demise of his parents.
They must have had that in mind when they made the pilot I guess.

What did I think of the Pilot?
I loved the Pilot. I liked the script, the actors, etc. My favorite Clark Kent moment:
1) I have 3 favorite Clark moments: A) My favorite Clark Kent moments are the Clark & Lana moments. Especially when Lana asked Clark, "So, what are you, man or superman," and Clark answered shyly, "I haven't figured it out, yet."
B) My second favorite Clark moment is the scene with Clark & Lana in the graveyard. That's when Clark & Lana first met. I like it when Lana asks Clark if he can keep a secret, and his response is, "I'm the Fort Knox of secrets." She tells Clark he must think she's weird talking to dead parents, and Clark tells Lana, "No, I don't think you're weird, Lana." I like the way Lana introduces her parents to Clark (Tom was funny when he just waved to them). Lana tells Clark a sad story about her dream, and Clark cleverly makes Lana laugh, and Clark says, "What's that, Mrs. Lang? Yeah, I'll tell her. Your Mom wants you to know that you're never alone, and that she's always looking over you, no matter what. What's that, Mr. Lang? Your Dad thinks you're a shoo-in for Homecoming Queen." Lana and Clark start laughing. They walk home, then Lana kisses Clark on the cheek and Clark has a big smile on his face.
C) My 3rd favorite Clark moment is the Jonathan & Clark scene where Jonathan tells Clark the truth about him being an alien and being from another planet. Jonathan tells Clark his parents weren't exactly from around here. Clark asks Jonathan, "Where are they from?" Jonathan points his head to the telescope and Clark laughs and says to Jonathan, "What are you trying to tell me, Dad -- that I'm from another planet?" Jonathan nods his head, "Yes." Clark jokes, "And I suppose you stashed my spaceship in the attic." Jonathan answers Clark (while Clark looks at Jonathan surprisingly): "Actually it's in the storm cellar. This is how you came into our world, son. It was the day of the meteor shower." Clark looks upset and angry and replies: "Wait! This is a joke, right? Why didn't you tell me this, before?" Jonathan answers Clark, "We wanted to protect you." Clark angrily replies: "Protect me from what?! You should have told me!" Then Clark superspeeds away.
2) Favorite Clark Kent line: "What are you trying to tell me, Dad - that I'm from another planet? And I suppose you stashed my spaceship in the attic."
3) My favorite Clark Kent scene: When Clark Kent is fantasizing about Lana Lang in his barn and Lana says to him, "I told you I would save you a dance." In Clark's mind, he and Lana are dancing to one of his favorite songs. (Tom & Kristin are both great dancers). Also, whenever Clark is smiling, he looks so charming, that his smile melts my heart.
4) The funniest moments in the episode:
There are a few of them. 1) When Lana asks Clark, "So, what are you, man or superman?" Clark smiles and answers Lana, "I haven't figured it out, yet."
2) When Pete & Chloe are betting on Clark, they both count to 5 and Clark tumbles down right in front of Lana & Whitney (actually, Clark Kent is not clumsy at all; it's just Lana's necklace makes him sick and makes him lose his strength, because it has a piece of meteor rock in it).
3) The graveyard scene where Clark tells Lana, "What's that, Mrs. Lang? I'll tell her. Your Mom wants you to know that you're never alone, and that she's always looking over you, no matter what. What's that, Mr. Lang? Your Dad thinks you're a shoo-in for Homecoming Queen?" Lana replies to Clark with a laugh, "Did they really say all that?" Clark laughs back and cleverly answers Lana, "Oh, yeah. They're quite chatty once you get them started."
5) I only wish that Clark had friends to talk to about his secret, like when he found out he was an alien from another planet. Then he wouldn't feel so alone. I wish he were more honest with his friends, when he had to explain why he had to leave or disappear, and just answer: "I have some special abilities, and I use them to help people, especially when I have to rescue people. For example, when I had to rescue Lex and save him from drowning, and Whitney, too."
6) What do I like best about Tom's performance? I especially loved Tom Welling in the first Season of Smallville, when he was very Supermanly about rescuing people: Like Lex Luthor when he hit Clark and Clark fell off the bridge. He then ripped open the hood of the car with his super-strength, and grabbed Lex Luthor out of the river. He then did CPR on Lex. (I'm not sure if this was really Tom, or if he had a stunt-double do the actual rescuing, but I thought it was super cool of Tom to do). Then Tom rescues Eric Johnson/Whitney Fordman in the next episode. I really love Tom Welling's performances, especially when he acts very Clark-like(Superman-like). The Pilot is one of the best episodes of the 1st Season of Season. In fact, I think Season 1 is the best Season of Smallville, because of Clark's heroism in rescuing people, saving people, etc.

This is a good episode, because you can always, no matter how far the series has gone, look at this episode, and see the great differences between now and then.

I just watched this episode again this week and I just love it! I think is one of the few that I just can't get tired of :D I still remember when I watch it for the first time like 7 seven years ago, who would it thought how things would ended up like.
Everytime I watch the first season it makes miss a lot the old good times, when everybody even Lex were practically innocents and genuines.
I hope that when the final episode comes out, they air the first one first, so we can see the obvious differences over the years ;)

i watch this show this is my 2 favorite episode ,in this first episode The episode begins in 1989 when a meteor shower hits Smallville; at the same time a small spacecraft, containing an alien boy, crashes in front of Jonathan and Martha Kent's truck. They adopt the superhumanly powerful child and name him Clark. Gough and Millar use this opening scene to establish that the three lead characters of the series, Clark, Lana and Lex, share a common bond they are all without one or both parents: Clark is the only survivor of his home world; Lana's parents are killed in the meteor shower; and Lex is alienated from his father, Lionel Luthor , after being rendered bald by the meteor blast

Just watched it again.
Such a great episode. It was one of the best pilot I've seen. Aside from the kinda lame FOTW, that episode would've been flawless.
I miss that time when Lex and Clark were friends, when I rooted for Clana and Chloe was a reporter (only for the Torch but still).
They all looked so young in that episode. Tom has really changed, he was so *small* back then. His face shape has changed so much!
I must say though, TPTB weren't really original with their song choices in the earlier seasons, most of the stuff they use is plain mainstream pop rock. I like it when a tv show surprises me with bands I've never heard before.

I've decided to watch the whole series again in anticipation of Season 8. I know there are SV fans who do this every year or multiple times a year. I think I may have done this once before but it was a while ago.
I just watched the Pilot Episode again and it was so much fun. I even enjoyed the freak of the week. He really played into the fantasy of getting back at the kids who tortured you in school. I chuckled at the fact that one of the "cool jocks" was still in Smallville working as a mechanic.
It was interesting and random that Jonathan had been trying to decipher the message in the spaceship for years and that Clark's telescope was given to Jonathan by his dad when he was a teenager.
I really enjoyed the scene between Clark and Lana in the graveyard. Both Lana and Clark had zany senses of humor and were very kind to one another.
Chloe and Pete have wonderful chemistry and comic timing. It was fun to see Chloe/Clark/Pete investigations and Chloe revealing the Wall of Weird to Clark as though it were the best present ever. LOL!
At the end, outside the Homecoming dance, Clark gives a wonderfully wicked smile after stacking Whitney and friends' trucks on top of each other.
It's a great pilot bursting with potential.

Which pilot? Episode 01 of season 1 as aired was excellent. But there was a pilot that came before this (or so my videos show). The difference between the un aired pilot and S01E01 was the actress playing Martha Kent . Somehow the actress portraying 'Martha' in the aired version and the subsequent series is 'better' than than the unaired version.

I TOTALLY miss the Clark and Lex friendship. It's so strange going back and watching older episodes where everyone was friends and, like you said Misstaken, when Chloe was so into the reporting. She still is now, but the Torch was always fun to watch.

The moment i saw a trailer for Smallville, i was intrigued. The early years of superman, growing up and learning to deal with his powers? That i had to see!
As an opening episode, it's a brilliant start to the series. A great way of establishing all the main characters whilst having a pretty good plot to start off with. Favourite moment of course has to be when Clark and Lex "meet" in a brilliant stunt for tv: Clark getting hit by Lex's car with both falling into a river. CLASSIC moment!
A part of the show has lost the charm that it had in the early seasons. Don't get me wrong, I've loved the complex friendship that was inevitablly torn apart between Clark and Lex, but looking back at this episode I can't help but feel that it was closer to the Superman mythos in spirit back in the days of "meteor rocks" and "the ship" than it is now with both Brainiac and Bizzaro introduced in the show.

I'm sorry if somebody already posted or asked this but I've had this question on my mind. I'm watching all my SV DVDs over again and already am passed the Pilot. My question is: Remember how when Clark and Lana became a couple and he was scared of making love to her cuz he was afraid he'd might kill her? Well, how come when Clark did CPR on Lex in the Pilot, Lex wasn't killed?

David Nutter directed the pilot and he did an awesome job. This is by far one of the best episodes of the show...I really enjoyed the ending when Lifehouse are playing and Clark says "Goodnight Lana" and then she turns round...it's a great scene and all of the actors were great!! Michael Rosenbaum was amazing in the pilot...I could tell from day one that he was going to be amazing :)

I guess you could argue that saving Lex, he was in control of all his muscle functions.
And he's kissed and hugged Lana before as well. At that point in time he knows that he's super strong and could gage the amount of strength necessary to perform CPR. The problem is losing control. Involuntary reactions like a sneeze for example can rip apart a building so... if Clark loses control of himself he's afraid of what might happen.
However, I think... Clark's super sex fears are unfounded. As Chloe said in Season 5, Clark does a lot of things... shaking hands, hugging, kissing and he doesn't hurt anyone. The Kent Farm bathroom seems to be functioning just fine. Similar rules would seem to apply to other spontaneous bodily functions... Kinda gross.

I thought the pilot was very good, but I learned that both Lana and her parents are not that smart. Lana's parents just stood there and watched this fireball coming towards them. Why didn't they run?
The other thing is that Lana goes to the cemetery at night. :eek:Who does that? If anyone has seen a cemetery at night they would realize that it is pitch black with an eerie fog (or swamp gas, depending on where you are from) covering it. The moon is the only thing that lights up the place. Why did Lana choose the night time to go there by herself? and why did Nell let her?:(

I LOOOOOOVED this episode. It was really interesting, because just yesterday I decided to watch "Arctic," and then immediately after that, I pulled out my Season 1 DVD set and watched "Pilot." There are so many distinct differences, in the colors (brighter), the music (a lot more popular songs back then), the character's voices (all of them seemed way higher), the relationships (so uncomplicated and fresh at this point)... Everything felt so new and innocent, which was a nice change, since everything was so often angsty and dark in Season 8. Angsty and dark episodes have their place, but this IS a show about Superman, so watching the more lighthearted, warmer episodes gives me a good feeling.

I love "Pilot", it's still one of my favorite episodes, even after all these years. All the characters introductions are great. One of my favorite scenes is the one in the barn between Clark and Jonathan. Clark, Chloe and Pete investigating Jeremy Creek was a great scene too.

This was the best episode ever. I liked the scene in the graveyard with Clark and Lana and I liked the one at the end too. Where he thanked her for the dance and she turned around and smiled. That was perfect it's nice to go back and watch this sometimes because it reminds me of the times when Clana was new fresh and good.

I just watched this episode I really enjoyed it. The second episode doesn't quite live up to it, but it is a great way to start Smallville.
Lana was so innocent and young in it and not at all the way she seemed in the end (understandable of course based on what happens in her life). She is actually fairly likable - a little undeveloped, but still likable. From the pilot, her character could have gone anywhere.
I love young Chloe and Pete. Chloe was clearly still the same Chloe she's always been. Her wall of weird lead right into everywhere she goes - from journalism to Watchtower.
The number of outdoor scenes really stands out - I missed those in season 8. They were all over Smallville and in the Kent Farm.
I also love how Clark saves Lex and the Lex returns the favor by saving Clark in the field. Johnathon never trusts Lex, but Clark trusts that Lex is nothing like his father and is a good guy. It is a great way to introduce the character because we all know where this will really lead. You want to believe that Lex is good, but you know he won't turn out that way and the desire to know his journey from good to evil is one of the major selling points of the show.

I just re-watched the pilot recently. It's the only episode of Smallville that I have ever seen. The first time I watched it was when it first aired. I didn't like it when it first aired, so I never watched the show again. I just didn't think it was that great, not really that well acted, and I wasn't a fan of the lead, Tom Welling.
I recently watched it again and while I wasn't in love with it, I enjoyed it a little more than my first viewing, enough so that I might be inclined to watch the second episode. I would give it a 6 overall. I am coming around to Tom Welling too. He's kinda hot. Not sure why I didn't see that before.

I watched it yesterday on HLN, it's a channel I have on DirectTV that shows 2 back to back commercial free episodes every week day. I just noticed for the first time that in the pilot when Lionel and Lex are flying over Smallville in 1989 Lionel is reading the Daily Planet with the front page talks about the Queen's plane crash. Did they plan Oliver all the way back in the beginning?

The Pilot was and is simply one of the best episodes of the entire series. The characters were introduced perfectly, written to a professional and believable standard and the whole concept of a young Clark Kent struggling with his superpowers was set.
In the Pilot especially, I find Clark so relatable on many levels. He just wants to be a normal person just like everyone else - as a teenager myself who has autism and have always wanted to be normal just like other people, I can relate to this. I also relate to the whole concept of Clark having his own personal space, his 'Fortress of Solitude', the Barn. I, like Clark, find most of my comfort in my own room where I gaze up at the stars occasionally albeit without a telescope. Clark's dreams in this episode - being a football star and dancing with Lana - I can also identify with as I have had several similar aspirational dreams (sans Lana) and there was a girl I fell in love with in Year Nine at school of whom I never had the guts to actually talk to properly. :(
Jeremy Creek is also a great opening villain to the series and all the acting was to an exceptional standard. Rock on.

After starting with Season 9, I would think I would have trouble with watching Season 1(because of age). I've been watching Season 1 (on DVD) for the first time and I love it! This episode is great, Lana just seems very likeable to me (I haven't watched later seasons so I do not want to know what happens to her) so currently Lana is my favorite character. Lex is great! I'm glad he didn't keep his orange hair like in the early days of the Superman comics. I like Lex bald! I give it a 9/10.

The only thing I will say I did not like about the Pilot was the little kid they got to play "baby" Clark. He just did not do it for me nor make me feel the motherly instinct arise like the 1978 baby Clark or the animated version of an actual baby Clark. I dont know why but I could never like the kid, and it was even worse in the episode later on where they show little Clark at home with the Kents.
A part from that everything else was great, I loved young Clark and Chloe and especially Lana. I have always thought Kristin played the best and most beautiful Lana I have ever seen; and in S1 she was not as annoying or whiny, although they had already established the victim trait with her being the towns resident orphan.
Chloe and her wall of weird were amazing and seeing what has happened to Chloe it kind of makes me sad to see how she was back in highschool.

Every Superman project, whether film, television, or animation, starts off with Clark's origin and this pilot episode of Smallville is no different. What AlMiles did was interesting in that they added the twist of the meteor showers that come from his doomed world of Krypton.
The pilot established the characters, their journeys, and their relationships. This is what the series is building on. The Clark/ Lana relationship worked for the first 3-4 seasons, but after the 4th season it was over played out. Clark's journey starts with this great pilot episode and it was a great start to the show.

Still a 10 out of 10 to this day well actually Id give it a 9.5 if I could but the way the ratings work on here I can't. A brilliant introduction to the show and the Superman mythos. The meteor shower was fantastic and the scene was very reminescent of Superman the Movie. Its so strange to think its been 10 years since I first saw this, and I would have missed it if my Dad (R.I.P) hadn't have told me it was on. I watched it on a New Years Eve (2001) on Channel 4. It rekindled my love affair with Superman and for that I will always be greatfull.

This will forever be a special episode for me as it aired on my birthday October 16th. I turned 13 that day and I could not have been given any gift greater than that of another notch in the Superman mythos. I remember being thrilled when I heard about this series. It sounded so awesome.
And the pilot definately lived up to the hype. It was cool to not see Superman but to see the man who would become him. I remember loving the poster of him chained to the post with the \S/ on his chest and to see that moment play out on screen was amazing.
And of course the meteor shower. Definately one of the most memorable scenes from the pilot episode.

My rating for the Pilot is a 9.5, but I voted a 10!! A real genuine effort by those that really seemed to care about the show and the characters at the time. There was a life and vibrance to the show in the early seasons that unfortunately vanished somewhere around Seasons 5-6, and especially in Seasons 8-10 IMO.

I really liked it,it had a great characters introduction and a heartfelt story.
Clark`s problems were far more relatable and felt real compare to the whole kryptonian nonsense that he dealt later on.This time it was just about a boy who growing up feel like an outsider.
Lana, since the very first episode we already got a hint that she was not perfect and not quite the product that people around her (whitney, aunt nell, clark) wanted her to be.The fact that she used to talked to her dead parents in cemeteray at night revealed she was a very lonely person nomatter how popular and how liked she was in her school. She had a hole in her heart, being an orphan and witnessing her parents dead right in front of her must`ve made for some traumatic child experience.
Lex,much like Lana,he was not what her dad wanted him to be,he was somneone who tried to get away from his Luthor image, from Lionel, only to figured out later on that he and Lionel were not as different as he thought. It`s much more difficult to fight from being devil than to fight to being good.
Jonathan and Martha were one of the coolest TV parents ever,The Kents dynamic really gave Smallville that sense of a warm family show.

In anticipation of the final few episodes, including the series finale, the network has re-aired the pilot to see how it all began. In watching the pilot on the air again after 10 years, it still holds up and is the foundation of everything that comes afterwards. Many of the seeds have been planted such as Clark trying to find out who he is and what his destiny is, his relationship with his parents, Lana, Pete, and Chloe. His friendship with Lex that will eventually turn them into mortal enemies. We also see Whitney Fordman, who only lasted a season as Clark's rival for Lana's affections. Like most Superman projects, the pilot also starts with his origin but with a twist in that he's accompanied by meteor rocks that came from his doomed world of Krypton. It's an interesting lookback on how far Clark and the cast have come in 10 years.

They also cut that dialogue where Jonathan is like "Do remember 'so and so'.... that's where the money came from that bought that truck." and all that.

Yep - I missed that too. They should have done commercial free. I always love watching the pilot!

This is one episode of Smallville that I could watch repeatedly and never get tired of. That innocence and fresh faced enthusiasm that all the characters have in the pilot seems a distant memory now. Compared to this season it's as if it came from an entirely different show, which in a way it is I suppose.
Well Hydro Farm, this is it old buddy old chap - the end of Smallville. It's been a good ride and good luck to all the rest of the way. Only Petey Boss Ross would have the audacity to quote the self and you nailed it, much like Clark to the corn cross on that fateful Pilot day. The stars are projectors indeed.

I give the episode a 9.5. It loses that half point because Clark never got to fully enjoy his revenge as he couldn't reveal that he stacked the trucks on top of Whitney's.

Back in 2001, when I heard about the new show, I was pretty interested--I'm a Superman fan, after all--until I heard that Clark wouldn't have his uniform, and couldn't fly. From what I was reading, it was going to be Gossip Girl On Steroids. Not something I wanted to see.
Then came 9/11. Pretty much lost interest in superheroes (fictional ones, that is) for quite some time.
A couple years (I think) down the road, the show was in whatever season it was in, and Warner released the Season One box set. Up to that point, I was hearing great things about it, but not from my fellow geeks. Still sounded like Gossip Girl On Steroids. Adding to that point of view were disturbing tales of "ship" storylines. And I'm not talking about the USS Enterprise.
One of my friends gave me S1 for Christmas that year. I put it aside, figuring I'd sell it on eBay or something. New Year Eve comes, and I have plans to watch a Twilight Zone marathon at a friends' place (not the one who gave me the DVD set). At the last minute, though, my friend calls, and says "Hey, Right Winger, dunno how to tell you this, but I, um, have a date, so..." I told him "I understand, stick to The Code." The Code, for those too young to understand such things, is a moral imperative between men that says no matter what plans you make to hang out with your buds, if a girl comes along those plans are canceled. All real men understand and abide by this directive. We don't complain about it, we cheer for our brother's good fortune.
So here I am, New Year's Eve, with no actual plans. I decide to just go ahead and watch the pilot, so I can tell my other friend I gave Gossip Girl On Steroids a fair shot. So I did. I watched the pilot.
I was beyond impressed. To date, the best pilot I've ever seen. I ended up watching over half the first season until my body said "Dude. We're sleeping, NOW."
I watched Smallville exclusively on DVD from that point on until the beginning of last year. By then, I had gotten caught up with the show. Now, I've four more regular episodes to go, followed by that two hour finale.
And, yeah, those early years WERE Gossip Girl On Steroids. But it still held my interest. Not just seeing how Clark developed the morals that make up Superman, but also, and to be honest, mostly, Lex's tragic decline from a moral young man devoted to his friends to the sinister, evil mastermind of legend.
It was a great start to a great series. I only hope the ending is worthy of that beginning.

they actually left out a few things from the pilot besides the jump over/on top of the bus........left out pete and chloe dancing at the homecoming for one thing........but mostly left out the scene in the barn with jonathan and clark after clark makes his first "save"........dad asks clark if he is ok and clark says....."can i answer that in 5 years?"....plus.....clark says to his dad, "i am glad you and mom found me".......and jonathan says......"we didn't find you clark, you found us.".......this is CRUCIAL of course because in later seasons it was discovered that jor el met jonathan's dad in the past and directed clark's/kal el's spaceship to the kents....i know they had commericals to fill, etc....and the original was longer then a 60 minute episode.(i think 65 minutes if memory serves) . but i still wish they had re aired the original pilot in its entirety.........it still was great to see it this way again but.....just thought that would have been better...

The Pilot is one of my favourite first episodes of TV ever but I always felt it might have benefited from being a double episode. The Smallville Pilot had far more backstory to fill in that any other Pilot, I just think they could have done so much more with the extra time.
Not that i'm bashing it, I think they did an amazing job to fit everything into 45 minutes.

I just caught the replay of the Pilot last night (it was on SPACE channel here in Canada), and I think it's a pilot that will still hold up years from now in syndication and on DVD. You just knew, when Clark saw the Wall of Weird and then little Lana on the cover of TIME magazine(!), that his guilt over the chaos of his arrival would haunt him for years. And the first meeting of Lex and Clark, JK's disapproval, Lex finding Lana's pendant ... the seeds of future discontent were sown right there.
I didn't catch the pilot initially back in 2001 because Smallville had a bit of a late start north of the border. Global TV (now Canwest) picked up S1 in 2002 -- when half the season had already played in the U.S. so they had to double up episodes to catch up. I think they played it on weekends, so I likely saw half of S1 in a few weeks. "Can a superhero protect his own heart?" was the slogan they used in the Global promo ads, along with the inevitable S1 Clana clips.
2002 was also the final season of X-Files, and having watched that loyally, that was my focus at the time. I think I was hooked on SV by S3, once they had a somewhat permanent schedule here.
Smallville was eventually picked up by YTV (a kind-of Canadian Nickelodeon channel), then CITY-TV and A-Channel, bouncing around several days during the week over the seasons. I can't remember which network -probably when SPACE first got it, but at one time they actually played the new episodes ahead of its U.S. airing . SV now plays nationally on SPACE, the national sci-fi channel on Sunday after its airing in the U.S.and also on some regional network, where it actually airs the same time as the CW! As you can see, SV has been on around the network block up here more often than Clark has been on Red-K!
But as a SV fan, I stuck through the network scheduling gymnastics and managed to follow it, online if necessary. Other comics-related shows have come and gone (Birds of Prey anyone?), but SV has endured. I can't believe it's been 10 years since it aired, and it will be a sad day when SV bids adieu one last time. :(

Im starting to rewatch all the episodes of Smallville now as the show is finally over and give my final thoughts to you guys.
I thought that the Pilot was very good, even after watching the Finale.Clark not wating super-powers is what makes him not like us because I think anybody would do anything to be special. When I first started watching this show Lana was my favorite female charcter and in the first season I could see why Clark would be in love with her. Lex was handled great in this episode because you never thought of him and Superman being friends, But if you think of the finale you relize it goes all to crap. Pete and Chloe were indrotuced in this episode pretty good even though they dident have much scenes they were shown as Clarks loyal friends at the time. Martha and Johnathan were shown as the loving parents as they still are today and I thought, even though it was the first episode, Jeremy was made for this episode with the Scarecrow storyline.
So overall I give this episode a:9/10

To be honest I never really paid much attention to Smallville when it was airing on TV but after the last episode aired I got curious and decided to check out the pilot episode and I loved it! I then proceeded to watch season 1 thru 9 and and my brain was boggled  I can't wait to get season 10 on DVD.

when they initially shot the pilot, there was another actress. you can look up the lost clips on youtube. however, it was realized that that actress wasn't good for the part so they cast Anette O'Toole. She was formerly in a Superman movie (Superman II) and was a great Martha Kent!

I think the pilot is absolutely phenomenal, one of the best television pilots I've ever seen. It wasn't too cheesy and had great action and character development. It's definitely a favourite episode of mine. :)
