I know Clark is a good man, but surly he will not be breaking any laws by making a few diamonds to keep his mother in money, while he goes to Yale, or something! Espcially now that Daddy the bread maker is gone.

Clark could easily make a fortune with his powers. But that's true in any incarnation of Superman. It's one of those factors you have to accept about him being a noble superhero.

But wouldn't it be noble to give his momma some financial security?

You would think, but I don't think they're having any financial problems at the moment. The election was expensive, but now that they're done with that they should be fine. As long Clark's around, it's not like she's leaving her to fend for herself.

Once he leaves for Metropolis in the movie, he has half of his paycheck sent to his mother and I'm sure the same will probably occur in Smallville also.

I’ve wondered the same thing. Surely there’s nothing illegal or immoral from forging diamonds out of coal, especially seeing as how he can go to the local market and buy a bag of it at a massively inexpensive price.

Considering all the trouble they’ve had on the farm in the past, it doesn’t seem illogical for him to do something like that to help Martha. I kind of wonder how he even knew he could do it, and how he could make the diamond so perfectly cut by just use of pure heat.

Hmm...

Heat? I thought it was presure that made diamonds...he squeases them I believe.

I’m sorry, I got two portions of the scene confused (it happens when one doesn’t sleep.) Yeah, he squeezes it into a diamond and then uses his heat vision to set it in the ring.

The fact remains the same that the diamond looks lovely for an un-shaped stone.

I had a problem w/ the "cutting" of the diamond as well, but yes, I know, it was all "symbolism". But he could have made some "raw" diamonds (claiming he found them -- heck, there's no way anyone could accuse him of "stealing" them)... But alas, I think it's a moot point. Onward and Upward!

I could use about 50 diamonds to put me through college...

On the one hand it could be viewed as immoral to use his powers in such a way to gain financially. But is it any more immoral than making an engagement ring to give to your girlfriend?

Someone has to pay for all those tights in the future...

well... really, he'de be making "Real" diamonds, that didn't harm anyone in anyway
and considering he uses his powers around the farm, which do help productivity/profit i wouldn't see why not!

I've been saying this for years! I was yelling to my brothers last week "Why doesn't Clark make diamonds to pay for the campaign!?!"

Right, because no one would ask how a Kansas farm boy just happens to have diamonds on hand...

De Beers would want his head on a stake.
The Feds would suspect that they were smuggled or stolen.
Geologists would surely say - "Hey, there aren't any diamond mines in Kansas!"

Surely, if people are looking into handsqueezed diamonds from the Kent home, there's a good chance that some one would investigate and stumble upon the real secret.

For the record all man made diamonds produced by enormous pressure have been of industrial, not gem, quality. Clark would probably make more money by making a lot of industrial quality diamonds instead of a few gem quality diamonds.

Geologists would surely say - "Hey, there aren't any diamond mines in Kansas!"
But diamonds have been found in meteor craters, which Smallville, KS has quite a few of.

Also, there are diamond mines in Arkansas, so finding diamonds in Kansas is not far fetched. The SE corner of Kansas is only about 30 miles from the NW corner of Arkansas.
