View Full Version : Well, at least we know why Lionel sabotaged Lex's election hopes

Since this was a question we had during the last episode's discussion, it seems Lionel wanted Lex to invest too much money so that his hold on his stock would weaken. Lionel would make a great chess player. He seems to think 2-3 moves past other people.

I agree. It was a plausible strategy, and it also helps explain why Lionel was in charge of Luthorcorp in "Lexmas."

Indeed, at last some answers to our Lionel questions.

I think Lex's response was essentially checkmate to Lionel's strategy. :) The first time we see Lex out-Lioneling Lionel.

I like that Lionel chose Martha and Clark over his empire. Lex knows daddy has a thing for Martha.

So Lionel worked against Lex during the elections so that Lex could let Luthorcorp falter, allowing Lionel to stage a hostal takeover? Nice. I'm glad that they didn't leave that subplot dangling.

I see it as being deeper than that, actually. If Lex is already wrapped up in his campaign, why wouldn't Lionel back Lex? Think about it, he keeps Lex distracted, and once he's Senator, Lex will have a full time job keeping his mind off of the company. Instead, Lionel undermined Lex, and still took advantage of his distraction.

I think Lionel's trying to cut down Lex's opportunities for power. By backing the Kents, he kept Lex out of office. By taking advantage of Lex's inattention, he's in a position to pull away some of Lex's corporate clout.

The real question is why? Is it more of Lionel refusing to let Lex beat him at any game? Maybe instead it's a play to protect Clark's secret and render Lex less capable of villianous power.

I'm having a really hard time believing that Lionel would do anything for anyone without a hidden agenda that would only benefit Lionel. Just don't think he's there to protect Clark.

Feel free to read any of my other posts on the subject.

There is 1 flaw with this theory. If Lionel gave the Kents so much money, wouldn't he not have the money to buy back Luthor corp? He must have someone who's hooking him up with $$$. Did he have an arrangement with that guy who was getting dirt on JK for Lex?

he didn't give them too much as Johnathan could pay him back with unused farmland. Land is a nice investment but I'm having trouble imagining that the "back 40" or whatever would cost enough to screw up a hostile takeover thats surely running in the multi millions if not billions of dollars.
