The Phantasm who had the ability to disappear and rematerialize out of nowhere and was very strong. "He" also targeted crime bosses and killed them.
The Phantasm also had a dark costume and had some of the same "install fear into them" tactics. These similarities made people think Batman was The Phantasm.
However, the Phantasm was really a woman named Andrea who was trying to avenge the murder of her dad by one of the crime bosses.
Andrea ended up surviving the adventure, but disappeared, as if she'd gone into exile.
Granted, there are differences between what we saw on Smallville and what was in the movie, but given Smallville's tinkering with DC Comic characters, I thought I'd throw it out there as a theory.
