View Full Version : The Death of Rock Music in NYC

On January 3, 2006 one of the last bastians of new alternative rock died. 92.3 WXRK New York otherwise known as KROCK switched formats and became an all talk radio station called WFNY New York or Free FM. The only time that this radio station plays music is on the weekends. However the music they play while good is never new. The cool thing about KROCK was that throughout the day DJ's would play various songs by various artists, and would always play the new music along with the established hits. For example along with hearing such classics as One and All Apologies, you would also hear new artists like Queens of the Stone Age, Frans Ferdinand, and the Killers. Anyway the music that is played on Free FM is mostly classic rock, ie....U2, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, STP, and Metallica. Now I love all those bands but there are already 2 classic rock staions in New York. The point is that there is no place to listen to new upcoming artists anymore. Imo Rock music is in a lull right now but having New York's last real alternative new music station switch to all talk may be the final dagger for rock in NYC.

F-stop, i feel ur pain.
92.3 was my FAVORITE station, and quite frankly, Free FM kind of sucks, although the weekends aren't bad, but ya might as well listen to 104.3, they play the same thing.
Rock for OUR generation deserves its own station. But, until the lull is over, i have my trusty iPod and the new RHCP cd to hold me over

Word, that chili peppers album is awesome. I should just get satellite radio, I feel that is the future of music.

I had to get XM because all of the radio stations in my area are crap. I do, however, like NPR. We've got 13 country stations, five classic rock, two oldies, seven rap and one halfway-decent rock station that plays about 45 minutes worth of commercials and talk every hour.
