at the end of Lexmas, Lex tells that guy to "do whatever it takes to knock Jonathon Kent out of the race"

after watching Fanatic, im guessing Lex didnt mean "have Jonathon killed"?
cos thats what i thought he meant by "whatever it takes"..

It might have just been the heat of the moment for Lex. Also in Fanatic he mentions to Samantha Drake that he would never hurt the Kents. He more than likely meant it as an expression.

Even in Lexmas, it's clear that Lex isn't thinking of killing off JK. I mean, he still admires the guy - his dream-fantasy has him bonding with senator JK at the Xmas party. I took the "whatever it takes" line to be Lex's first blind step into darkness. He wasn't thinking through what "whatever it takes" could actually mean, and he's lucky his flunky didn't pull a Samantha on him.

Kind of like the famous, "will someone rid me of this troublesome priest" line. :)

But it makes you wonder if that statement comes back to Lex's mind after the assassination attempt. It could dawn on him that "whatever it takes" suddenly has more meaning than he intended, but even if so, will it change his outlook or directives to his motives? I doubt it.... He just may become even more discreet (and get some better locks on his door at the mansion :D)

True. But ruining Jonathon's campaign would still be classed as hurting the Kents - just not physically.

I think Lex sees defeating a political opponent (who happens to be JK) as being different from physically harming or threatening the safety of the Kent family.

I guess it makes Lex want to take a step back from his road to evil. He's clearly not ready to do "whatever it takes" to defeat Jonathan Kent.
