As much as I enjoyed the Nixon arc, I'm gonna have to go with Lex's insanity. It was perfectly executed, showing Lex's slow decline into madness. 'Shattered' remains one of the best episodes ever, and it showed Lex's paranoia excellently.
He also discovered Clark's secret and was determined to get his memory back after Lionel wiped the last 7 weeks.
The Lex memory arc also gave us another classic, 'Memoria'.

I quite liked kal-el coming back and flying for the 1st time.. was well executed imo and the kal-el storyline in general has been quite good.. cant really think of what is my fave though but for now voted for that (ello to all the kryptonsite peeps!!)

For the poll I chose the stones, not that I liked the whole witch (I didn't) but the stone story brought Clark to the Fortress of Solitude.
My favorite story arc was in season 2 with the discovery of the caves and all that Clark has found out about himself from the caves.

My top three :
1) The insanity arc with Lex - Shattered is my favorite episode
2) Kal-El
3) Chloe finding out - Although they stretched it out for WAY TOO LONG!! Clark should have figured out what Chloe knew about him in Blank. It seemed so pointless to have Chloe be the one help Clark with his memory, only to have the episode end up being about Clark and Lana in the end, and things going back to the way they were between Clark and Chloe.

I love the Professor Fine/the ship/Kryptonians/Lex arch this season, it's been awesome so far. Runner-ups would be Chloe finding out, the intro of Kal-El and the stones of knowledge.

There are couple ones I loved mentioned in the poll like Kal-El, Chloe, the ship, and Nixon. However, Lex's insanity is what I chose because it was so darn consistent, and had great continuity along with smashing episodes. From "Relic" all the way to "Covenant" was a great arc, and is constantly referenced by Lionel even in this season. The episodes were artistically amazing like the monotage of Johnny Cash's Hurt with "Shattered", or the beautiful shot flashbacks of young Lex and Lillian Luthor.
Lex'x insanity without a doubt.

I've got to go with Lex's insanity. Shattered and Memoria were great episodes that shed some light on the history of Lex's relationship with Lionel. It also showed us that, even though he treated Lex pretty horribly, Lionel still cared for his son deep down inside.

I enjoyed the arc concerning the 3 stones. The concept of the current events being set in motion centuries earlier and the influence of the Kryptonian symbols in societies throughout the years is just awesome stuff.
The "Blank" episode during the Chloe learning Clark's secret arc was particularly well done also.

Lex's insanity, made me cry every time i watch it. I also REALLY love the chluthor storyarc starting with the end of season 2 when chloe started working for Lionel, they have amazing chemistry together. I didn't really like the Chloe finds out Clark's secret storyline, it's nice that she knows but I don't find it exciting.
I also love Kal-el :D and though many hates this, I kinda like the Isobel storyarc, i thought it was hilarious. Isobel was hot and evil Jason made me smile :D I also LOVE Genevieve.
And i dunno if this is a storyarc or not but I love Alicia returning for Unsafe and Pariah. I really missed her. That girl deserved a better ending.

I liked the stones because it was continual questioning of what is coming next! It involved most of the characters and it led to some real fun and interesting things like Isobel! I just liked watching all the pieces get put together!

I totally agree... Chloe finding out was the best, although Blank was so annoying...actually all the episodes where she hinted like crazy were annoying...and it going back to the way things were between Clark and Chloe before, after he got his memory back was annoying. Her line-" You trusted me." was really sad..I was just like "Clark!! what is wrong with you!"

I love the Chloe arc too, but voted for lionel's experimenting...lionel was the most impressive addition to the superman lore. He allowed for Lex's real (comic book) young life, to still have a presence in the show while also giving us a villian AND a picture of the future seeing what lex will become. The Chloe arc was, in my opinion, necessary. They had essentially written her out of the show--they took the torch away from her and replaced her as the "lois-esque" character, by bringing in lois. However, since i think it is unlikely (although, this though occuring to me as I type, if they did this it would be AMAZING) that they will adopt a more buffy-like format where more characters know his secret and join together with him like buffy and her "scoobies" (we know that many of the shows characters eventually learn clark's secret in the comic lore--so we could potentially have a--not accounting for a character's death--"scooby" group of Jonathan, Martha, Clark, Chloe, Pete (bring him back), and Lana) it seems that this just gives us more thoughts that, since we haven't seen her in any superman comics since DC bought her rights, she might be killed off at any time. Between this and the possibility of Jonathan's death (which is, of course, not certain--in Lois and Clark, Both Jonathan and Martha were alive even when Clark worked at the Daily Planet) leaves me with the desire for them to just kill someone off already and move on with a stronger story arc for this season. In addition, i feel compelled to complain about the Clark-Lana relationship, which is terrible. They rarely have screen time together that isn't some dramatic "i love you" love scene, or a raging fight--what about the normal daily routine of normal relationships? After almost 5 full seasons now, something needs to move forward in the "i love her but can't tell her the truth" and "i love him but he won't tell me the truth" problems that their relationship has.
anyway, enough ranting for today

I'd say to say Kal-El plotline. I love all the Kryptonian stuff, and seeing Clark struggle with his alien and human sides.
Chloe finding out is also a lot of fun; although they dragged it way too long after Pariah through the finale.
You know what, the Nixon plotline from Season 1 was also a really good one. It was simplistic, but the scene where Nixon is literally dragging Clark across the woods...that was almost creepy.
My favorite arcs would be: Lex's insanity, Kal and Red k, and Chloe finding Clark's secret out.
Anything with Lexy gets an A+ in my book. :)

I chose "The new ship (fine, the kryptonians, lex)" for Brainiac and Lex. The farther away they move from Lana/Chloe/FOTW storylines, the better. And the closer they move towards Lex and Clark's destinies, the better. Brainiac gives the show a superman-esque feel, which is what I want and like.

True true. I think it's about time another person found out about Clark's secret and I'm glad it's Chloe because it really puts to rest the stereotype that her as a pesky reporter might spill her guts. The reality is that she's never been a better friend to Clark and I'm glad they've got that hero and sidekick thing going on.
Also I'm getting tired of the whole Clark deliberating and not telling Lana his secret. What good reason does he have for not telling her? Lana would definitely accept him for who he is. If she doesn't then well it's clear that Clark shouldn't even be with such a person in the first place. That's probably the weakest episode arc thing in Smallville. That whole deliberating and with Lana and the stones and the witches thing.
Somehow Lana gets all the weak storylines. Must be a weak character.

I voted Lex's insanity. I also liked the Roger Nixon arc, but they should have made it longer or had him appear more. Same with the unmentioned arcs of Dr.'s Hamilton & Walden. I also liked the Kal-El arc, the spaceship arc (of how it and the key to it were lost & found several times). It actually even continued in S5 with Lex finally getting the key back, but Clark taking it again at the mansion. Another unmentioned arc which I'm sure many loved is the Chloe-Lionel arc of S3 (started in Exodus of S2) where she was trying to get out of his control/power. That was very well done.

It appears to me that every season has a running plotline.
S1 - The Lex/Nixon investigation
S2 - The caves and Clarks heritage
S3 - Clarks blood , Adam Knight , The covenant Jor-El/Jonathon
S4 - Stones/Isobel
S5 - So far , deal Jor-El makes for Clarks life and Brainiac
Personal fave is S2 plot arc

there are alot of different arcs throughout every season... season 3 had adam, lex's insanity, lionel and chloe, jor-el's control (jonathons deal) etc
i'm not sure if that's a weakness or not
look at alot of popular shows like buffy or lost
Buffy pretty much had one major villain running through every episode of a season. The only other running plot lines where love stories.
Lost has ONE plot line, which takes forever to unfold.
Even Veronic Mars had one plot line in season one 'Who killed Lily?'
Maybe smallville is dealing with too much at once

Any arc involving Jor-El has been interesting. The arc involving the caves were a little iffy. I thought the Naman/Segeeth or w/e was a bit overdone. There was too much emphasis on the caves to my liking. And ofcourse, the worst arc was anything involving that witch Lana... err I mean Isobel

I LOVE that Chloe knows! I never wanted them to be together before, but I think now that she "knows" they make a great team and would also make a great couple. However, I'm thinking romance might not happen. Haven't the writers ever heard the unwritten rule that you can't date the cousin of the girl you're destined to be with?

I definitely liked it when Chloe finds out and that Clark knows she knows. It reminds me of Lois in the Lois 'n Clark show when she found out. They can work together. And her excuses for the big guy are way more believable than the usual CK faire.

Actually, my favorite story arc was the one involving the Kewatche; but the arc that offers the most promise for the future of the series is Chloe's learning Clark's secret and becoming his confindante. Eventually Clark's super-brain wil begin operating and he won't be a BDA -- until then he needs Chloe to both do a lot of the necessary thinking and inspire Clark to start thinking.

My favorite arc is the season-long arc of Lex finding out that Lionel murdered his parents, and sending him to jail. I guess Lex's insanity is one piece of that arc, but I thought the larger story was so well structured, and had so many other interesting pieces. It's what made Season 3 such an amazing season.
I also like the season-long arc of Clark vs. Zod in Season 5. I didn't like many the episodes, unfortunately, but I did like the story's development, and the idea is a key mythos story.

I agree, I think season 3 is the best season of the series. I did like the Brainiac/Clark story arc in season 5. I guess I look at it more as the Brainiac/Clark story arc because Zod didn't really come into play until Vessel and it was poorly constructed to have Lexod vs. Clark.

I think I agree with you there. It was really a psychological throw down between Clark and Brainiac -- and too bad poor BDA wasn't quite up to the contest. It was a truly excellent story idea. Execution left a little something to be desired.

Chloe finding out was definitely my favorite! I was so excited when Chloe learned the secret. Blank is one of my favorite episodes. I loved Chloe helping Clark discover his some abilities and Clark & Chloe discovering the rest of them together. IT was sad that Clark didn't know that Chloe knew his secret by the end of the episode but I absolutely loved every time she dropped hints that she knew through the rest of the season. Clark finding out Chloe knew the secret was awesome. I loved how they worked together after she knew and how Clark had someone he could talk too. Chloe finding out will probably continue to be my favorite arc through the end of the series.

The stones arc was my favourite. I liked the way that for most of the season Clark sat back and tried to be normal while Lana, the Luthors and the Teagues fought amongst themselves to get all three stones. Meanwhile everyone was just handing Clark the clues without even knowing it.
The only thing I would change about that storyline would be Clark and Isobel teaming up to unite the stones in "Spell".

These forums make me shake my head sometimes. :) I guess it will always be a popularity contest. IMO the Kal-El and Lex insanity arcs were the best in all of Smallville's seasons. Chloe's arc of knowing the truth was good and all, but I really don't think it was the best and can't really see how that arc is leading in the poll. But this is a people's choice thing and luckily for Chloe, she has lots of fans. :)

Great thread!
Of the options listed...
1. I liked Lex's Insanity. That's what got me hooked on the show. It sort of blended with Summerholt for a bit. Fantastic Lex/Lionel confrontations, great Chlex chemistry. That was a fantastic story arc.
2. Then it's Kal-el.
3. Then Chloe finding out.
The original spaceship and Nixon were pretty exciting.
Not listed... it seems that for a while during the first two seasons there was the fun of Clark figuring out his powers. That was great.
I liked the Lois/Green Arrow story arc of Season 6
The Zoner countdown was fun also... if a little confusing.
I guess there's sort of a hero arc, starting with Run all the way through Justice. That's fun as well.

Its a close call between Lex's insanity, and Chloe finding out Clarks secret.
Lex's insanity was good because MR played it so well, it freaked me out. And made me cry.
But i'm going to have to go with Chloe finding out. She prooved for an entire half a season that she could be trusted; granted she dropped a few hints, that Clark didn't seem to get. But Chloe finding out was good.

What a Clarkful poll. No wonder Michael Rosenbaum left the show: Lex apparently had no storylines to speak of. ;) :p

Kawatche cave storylines/virgil swann/clark's origin will always be my favourite as it introduced some of the series best episodes (rosetta, talisman, legacy etc). This was smallville at its peak.

i loved the season finale (commencement) but i felt they could have told a much better story with the stones, i hated the witch plot.

I voted for the Kwatche caves and Clarks origin story, but I also liked the old Clana story lines (1-4), and the three stones of power.

I find alot of the storyarcs are bad(mostly one that involve relationships) on this show but the Season 2 Kawatche Caves and Brainiac ones were great

The Kawatche Caves and Virgin Swann storyline will remain my favourite part of this show. That was SV writing at its peak. The stones plot (minus Lana the witch) is a close second. :)

i loved this arc too. Aside from the witch part i thought it was very well done. It kept you guessing at who had the stones and who was going to end up with them.

The caves were my favorite. If they can make Clark be more serious about his career at the DP & ditch that red jacket so he can have an RBB suit, then I would probably like that one as much as or better than the cave legend.

Don't be hating on the red jacket. I have a red jacket just like that.
It makes too many appearances & doesn't belong on the RBB (just looks lame on a someone with an official hero identity IMO).

Yeah. This plot was great & nicely developed Clark's friendship with Lex and their seperate attempts at finding out the secrets of the cave. I just watched Skinwalker last night & loved it. I especially loved that ominous music/sound effect that plays when Lex first sees the keyhole and later on when Lex is by himself in the cave & cleans the dust/dirt off the keyhole and the camera slowly pans to the picture of Sageeth. That music and scene was just awesomely done. They really knew what they were doing back then. I also loved that effect in Exile with the camera zooming on Sageeth's monster eye and continuing all the way down to show that it is the same shape as the island Lex was stranded on.
To me, the introduction of the caves was the wisest decision TPTB ever made for Smallville. It represents everything that was once right with the show.

Calrk Begins to work at the DP, and saving people around Metropolis, and changing in phone booths, and falling for Lois Lane. It's the closest the show has ever been to Superman.

season 8, I liked season 4 very much, but not this witch/stones stuff, I remember this season as the first "funny Lois season":)))))

Most definitely Season 2's vision of Clark searching for his Kryptonian origins and his discovery of who he really is would be my favorite storyline, closely followed by the ones from S8, 1, and 3.

I've seen a lot of favorite episode/season threads, so I figured I'd throw out a derivation of that. Since sometimes a good sequence of episodes can appear in a season you dont like, or can span over two seasons, i figured this would be a little different.
Now the episodes don't have to be from one particular arc, they just have to be in a row.
Personally, I really like the span from the episode Oracle (5-21) to Arrow (6-4), which had Vessel, Zod, Sneeze, and Wither sandwiched in between.
Here's why:
- Its kind of the beggining of the change in Clark and Lionel's relationship, with Clark starting to trust Lionel with some of the Kryptonian stuff
- "You haven't been saving for a bike, you've really been saving for a Harley"
- Lex getting double-crossed, which is a rarity, by Brainiac
- Clark's first trip to the Phantom Zone
- Clark meets Raya, learns more about Krypton and Jor-El
- Martha's convo with Jor-El
- Green Arrow comes into the picture (intro to his feud w/ Lex, relationship w/ Lois, interaciton w/ Clark)
- Lois finding her calling as a reporter
- Jimmy bursts on the scene, budding relationship with Chloe
- Super-breath
- The comedic aspect of Lana trying to be like Lex and blackmail Dr. Grohl
I might get some crap b/c I know a lot of ppl aren't fans of Lexana, but it wasn't something that bothered me too much. If anything, I feel it helped show why Lana isn't the one for Clark, something that wasnt really discussed other than the "I don't feel like I can be completely honest with her" quotes that were thrown in and not explained in previous seasons.
I also don't think there was a bad episode in the group. While I would say Wither is the weakest, especially from Clark's perspective, I still like the Oliver/Lois and Chimmy interactions.
A close second for me was Identity, Bloodline, Abyss, Bride, and Legion. I'm just not a fan of Abyss
I'd be interested to hear other ppl's opinion on my favorite stretch, as well as their own

Mine is Obscura-Tempest-Vortex-Heat-Duplicity-Red. I loved those 6 episodes, every single one of them.
What we got in these episodes:
-Great development with the tying of Clark's ship to Lex, Dr. Hamilton & Roger Nixon thanks to Eddie Cole, especially once Hamilton found the key in the field Cole saw the ship crash in
-Great Lionel-Lex development where Lex refused to join Lionel because he knew there is something big happening in Smallville while Lionel tried to find out what was keeping Lex in Smallville
-Great scene where Lionel fires everyone & blames it on Lex
-Roger Nixon was one of my favorite villians--he didn't need any powers, but was dangerous because of the Kents' morals that were against killing and found out Clark's secret
-Clark was not in the dark about Lex's spying activities, which added an interesting dimension to their dynamic
-Some more great Lex-Lionel stuff was seen in Tempest & Vortex with Lex hesitating to save him and his decision that temporarily cost Lionel his sight
-Heat was the greatest new power episode with great interaction between Clark & his parents, and some great unforced humor (none of that goofy background music existed back then)
-Pete finding the ship & being told the secret and the realistic reaction we got between 2 best friends after one had kept a huge secret from the other
-Pete's refusal to sell Clark out even when he was about to die
-Dr. Hamilton's return and obsession of the ship he heard Pete found
-Dr. Hamilton taking Lionel to his barn/shed to feel the ship, where Lionel finally finds out why Lex wasn't joining him in Metropolis and he found out that there is an alien presence in Smallville (which is the real story despite what the Veritas plot said)
-Clark's 1st experience being affected by red-k (just an awesome episode) while the Kents & Pete figure out what caused it and come up with a plan to stop him
-Lionel being a blind eyewitness of Clark shooting himself in the hand, which caused Lionel to be suspicious of him from that point on as being the alien who came in the ship Hamilton showed him just 1 episode prior
Calling-Exodus-Exile-Phoenix-Extinction-Slumber or Exodus-Exile-Phoenix-Extinction-Slumber-Perry would probably be my next favorite 6 episode stretch.

you might've just inspired me to watch those again.
- I like your point about the music. They have a bad habit of occasionally letting the scored music overwhelm the scene and its almost like they're trying to dictate our reaction. And it's something that didnt happen in the early seasons
- I completely forgot about that point as it pertains to Veritas retcon. I also like Hamilton referring to him as a "man of vision" when he was blind

Yeah, I loved those episodes. I love the way Clark was written back then--it was a major reason why I first started watching the show.
The plot that originated Lionel's curiosity started way back in Stray. That was the episode he offered Lex a job with him in Metropolis and Lex refused him. Then in the next episode (Reaper) he sent Dominic to find out what Lex has been spending unaccounted money on, with Lex putting some sort of tranquilizer in his Scotch and delivering him to Lionel in the trunk of his car. Then in the episode after that (Drone), Lionel paid Carrie Castle to do a story on Lex that made him look bad, though Lex turned the tide. In Crush (the episode after Drone), Pamela Jenkins shows up wanting Lex's forgiveness before she dies. It's mentioned that she has Luthorcorp stock that Lex's mother gave her, something that plays big later on in Tempest when Lex does his buyout. I loved how the plot flowed from episode to episode, culminating to what happened in Red and ultimately in Lionel's bugging of the mansion which Lex discovered in Insurgence. Come to think of it, I wouldn't be surprised if that's how Lionel's men found the octagonal key in the field. Lex must have discussed it with his men offscreen with Lionel overhearing everything and beating him to the punch.

For me the best stretch is this one Commited, Prey, Identity, Bloodline, Abyss, Bride, Legion, Bulletproof.
Every single one of those episodes contributes to the story of Clark becoming Superman in loveable way. Also they are very connected amongst them. It's a shame that they were followed by Power which was so lame. A close second would be Forever-Commencement-Arrival-Mortal-Hidden. That was one hell of a story arc finishing with Hidden.

Clark learns about where he is from(Season 2) for me. Such a huge milestone for the character and the mythos finally coming into play. Rosetta is still one of my favourite episodes of all time. Class.
Next would have to be Clark joining the DP. A huge stepping stone to the character and something that every Superman fan is familiar with. It also bought home the journey from boy to man. He started of as a shy teenager and now he's working at the most respected tabloid in the world.
