I'm sure most of you caught that quote when Lana was dieing and Lex was saying his last goodbyes to her. I think most have speculated that he's had feelings for her for quite a while, but that proves it.
This is why I still think Lana will play a big part in Lex and Clark having it out. Lex is going to try and have it all, like he said. He wants the Power, Money AND Lana. Of course, we all know that he can't have it all and I think this is what is going to really push him over the edge. Not that he isn't already going over it now.

I don't about you guys, but I think I must have cried thru the whole episode, I cried when Lex was finially happy, when he couldn't even put the car seat in the car, when he told Lana about how he always wanted Xmas but his dad didnt want to, to where Lana was dying...I tried to tell my mom, thats y he'll become evil bc he'll chose for Lana not to die, ahhh. then "I've always loved you" It was great to see a "villian" cry. and Michael did it best. I couldnt' keep but crying.

Him saying that, though doesn't necessarily mean what it would for someone else. This ges back to the "does Lex love Lana" argument, but has a broader scope.
Lex has never known love. Not real love, at least. He pursues it the way Ahab pursues the whale.
The term "Love" to Lex Luthor is completely without perspective. Lex "loves" anything he cannot have or be. This is why he "loves" Clark (the paragon of everything he is not able to be), and-assumedly- thinks he is in love with Lana. His love of Lana didn't really begin until she was with Clark and not attainable to him.
We are talking about someone, let's remember, whose favorite phrases are "I'll have the best doctors flown in within the hour," and "I'll get my best people working on it." He is accustomed to the sky being the limit for possessions or knowledge, and anytime it is not, that possession or knowledge becomes a psychosis for him.
Lex himself has admitted on-screen that he obsesses over things he cannot understand. Knowledge of Clark's secret, for example, is an obsession simply because it is just out of reach.
Lex tragically confuses love with what he cannot have, probably because his father has never allowed him to have love.
Poor Lex- he has been compared to Anakin and Faust in this way- will never have what he truly seeks, because his paranoia and lust for power cloud his true intent- to re-form his world into a place where he can have anything he wants, force those to love him who do not, to truly live a life without limitation. Again, like Faust and Anakin, his original motivation for seeking that power will become lost when that power corrupts him. After that, his only motivation will be power for power's sake, even though his obsession will continue (Think about the Lex in the later Superman mythos. He wants to own Superman, become Superman, or destroy Superman, and because he cannot, Superman is his solitary obsession and, ultimately, his Achilles' heel).
Those like him will always want to eat from the one forbidden tree, and will be undone trying.

Lex did love the doctor(forget her name) and believed she loved him, but of couse his love was betrayed. I think he believe's Lana would never do this. She does represent something that he wants, but has never been able to have, but also with her, he'd feel safe. He's never had that feeling. When he finally sees her betraying him in his own mind, or another way, and he will, he will truely be more over the edge of sanity than he is now.

Cinemastique: That was quite probably the best-written post I've seen on these boards. I'm not sure I'm ultimately convinced (Lex did have his mother's love, for example), but your analysis is very persuasive. Bravo.

It was a very sad scene no matter how against the Lexana I am. The one thing I was confused about was what exactly "always" means here. Does it mean just for a long time (maybe the end of season 2-season 3)? Or does it mean since "Metamorphosis"? Because I think some got the feeling that this was going to happen way back then. Which I think is kind of sick, considering she was 15 and he was 21. I'm just hoping it means he fell in love with her over time, not when she was a freshman in high school.
And I completely agree with Cinemastique--total Anakin complex.

It was a sad scene, and well played by both MR and KK.
As to Lex's feelings, he could have thought of her as a little sister when he first met her, and those feelings could have changed over time. He did help her keep the Talon. I think that was because he was fond of her -- not necessarily lusting after her. On another thread, someone brought up the fact that in the comics, Lena has been a character who was Lex's sister, and in another incarnation his love interest, I forget the other incarnations. So the character Lana may have taken on those roles in Smallville.

I know that a lot of people don't like Lexana, regardless, though. The scene was heartbreaking because that happens in real life, too. So, it was a very tough decision for Lex.
To choose to have the perfect life and lose someone you love without the power to save them?
Or to choose wealth and power, and to never losing your loved ones because you have the power to save them?

Definetly my favorite season 5 episode so far. That last scene between Lex and Lana was so heartbreaking, i bawled like a baby!:( It has just made me love Lexana even MORE. I thought they looked so cute together. Now i realize why Lex made that decision at the end because with Money and Power he can save Lana from dying.

Yeah I sure don't like Lexana but that scene with Lex crying in the hospital superb. It's not everyday you get to see the villian crying and and opening up, which is what made this episode great. Too bad that greatness and change didn't last long.
Am I the only one who felt sad at the ending scene when Lex said he wanted happiness and in order to achieve it, it's about 'power' 'money' *music changes* and something inside me just sank down as I said oohh noo... to myself even though I knew it would happen. A very deep and awesome awesome scene.

I was sad at the ending scene too. I was like, Lionel's gotten to Lex yet again!
To see lex that happy :) it just makes me not want him to become evil even more.

Clana used to be my favorite couple, but now Lexana is definitley my favorite couple. The ending of this episode was so sad!!! Almost cried... To bad Lex decides not to take that alternate future in the end

It was a bittersweet episode. Lex was happy, but we know, especially now that he is going to be worse than his dad, Brainiac, and every other super villian combined. He can't have it all, but he thinks he can. It is an Anakin Skywalker situation all over again!!

Now that you mentioned it, yes, the final scenes did remind me somewhat of Anakin in Episode 3. And, thus, Lex turns into the dark side... but was his decision something that would prevent Lana's death? It might be just like Anakin's decision...
Anyway, kudos to Michael Rosenbaum for pulling off a great tragic character. Had this been a Shakespeare tragedy, he would have been the focal character of the series...

I loved it. The Lex scenes were the only thing going for the epsiode as found the Santa thing silly. He is such an amazing actress I hope he continues to get more roles. It was very emotional and really got my lusting for more Lexana, amazing stuff. Wish it didn't have to be so tragic *sigh* I didnt cry the whole episode but I did at the end, too depressing.

Great episode! Lex and Lana looked good together here. Watching Lex with his son buying a Christmas tree, Lex looked so happy. Lana looked real pretty with her hair parted to the side. Jonathan acted like him and Lex were best friends. Wow its so sad that Lex 's life will go in the opposite direction. :(
