Whatever happened to Lion-el?

I think "Lexmas" destroyed the notion that Lionel has a) turned good, and is genuinely concerned about his son's turn towards darkness or b) is permanently under the control of Jor-el. The whole "fix my son even if it kills him!" thing was very Season 1 Lionel.

So if Lionel is neither good nor possessed by Jor-el, why is he funding JK's campaign against Lex? Any thoughts?

Or, as people have said before, and I agree with this, Lionel is still good, but the only way he knows how to go about things is the old way. He has the same behavior, but his motives are different.
