everthing is supposably growing up.. even the bda.. so maybe they are trying to adept the music to this seasons arc / setting / theme whatsoever..

I like this seasons' music better. It's more dramatic and mature, which matches this season more compared to the previous high school pop music.

I love the music this year!
Coldplay's "Message," Depeche Mode's "Precious," Brendan Benson's "Cold Hands Warm Heart," Breaking Benjamin's "Forget It" -- really love that one. David Gray, "Disappearing World." Diamond Nights, "The Girl's Attractive." I don't mean to list the whole Season 5 song list, but I'm loving the music. I almost forgot Dishwalla's "Collide."

I really like the music this season! Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Dishwalla, The Dandy Worhols, Diamond Nights, Stereophonics, and Breaking Benjamin (I've been hoping to hear them since S1)...And I just listed half the music, so I like the music this season ;)

Err...go buy the Metropolis Mix and listen to the music there (it's mostly from Season 5) and tell me the music sucks. If you can still feel it sucks after that, well, I guess you have dramatically different tastes in music than many of us. The music this year is great.

No pop! Oh no! Whatever will we do?!? :P j/k
Anyways, Smallville's always had a really diverse music lineup, and it's no different this year. They're playing some awesome tracks as usual.

I listen to almost nothing but my favourite radio station, Smallville Radio and ALL the songs ever played on Smallville from all the seasons that I have acquired over time!

With the exception of Exposed's "Don't Cha!" (sorry, not a fan of the song) - I think that this season's music has been amazing. I don't own the Metropolis Mix, but after sampling the songs, I sure wouldn't mind owning it!

Oh yeah, "Don't Cha!" *shudders* Luckily, that song isn't on the Metropolis Mix.

Someone has to shoot the Pussycat Dolls. I expected Smallville to have a better selection. Though I think that one was just an inside joke during the Lois strip thing, it's still so tacky and tasteless... like the Pussycat Dolls.
Sorry if any of you like them, you'd have to agree they don't belong in Smallville.

Do you remember the end of Splinter? The music sounded... soqueer when Lionel was talking to Lex. (At least I think it was Splinter) It was just like... Bass... and that was it, and it wasnt even Creepy Bass... it was just a random set of notes. I wanted it to be like Season 1 or 2,, where the music matched the atmosphere perfectly.

I don't think I'd be able to own the soundtrack if that was on there. Something about that song really bugs me.

The music in season 5 has been great so far. I find myself hitting Itunes looking for songs after pretty much every episode of Smallville:)

I believe what we were hearing was a tympani drum, and it's suppose to represent a death knell or gong -- maybe there's some gong sound in there, too. But it parallels the sound we hear at the end of the episode with Clark talking to Jonathan. So my feeling is that they captured the moment perfectly in the music. I think it worked better than a pop or rock song.
I agree, season 1 and 2 music was really great -- one of the (many) reasons I was hooked on the show. They did a great job of fitting the scenes and moods with great songs. But IMO they're carrying that tradition through to this season as well. Smallville music is amazing. I'm on iTunes after every episode, too, mosespeach!

Okay, to both of you who think the music sucks this year: What kind of music would you prefer to hear on Smallville? Specific examples of songs/bands would be nice.

Mmm Maybe wwe're not thinking of the same thing, because what I'm thinking of is uber queer. But you're entitled to your opinion =S

lol I see you're challenging people heheh. Even though I wasnt a part of it, I think I'd like to put up some examples...
Loving the Alien by Velvet Revolver would have been a nice choice for the end of Hidden I think, and For Splinter, when Lionel tells Lex Lana wont love him, I'd say.... Hmm I'll get back to you on that, lil busy atm,

The Velvet Revolver cut is nice. I still prefer David Gray for that particular scene, but who knows, they could be saving Loving the Alien for a later ep.

Mmm I seriously doubt that for some reason. As cool as it would be, I couldnt see Smallville playing something I'd actually like lol
Well I guess that was kinda bad, cuz Smallville occasionally plays something I like

In general, I'd like less techno, more rock. By rock I mean either Oasis (what's the story morning glory) type music, or Jimmy Eat World kind of music. Some VR would be nice, and definitely Seether/Eve 6. I personally think that Fine Again by Eve 6 would fit many situations, especially when Clana breaks up. I would also like them to ditch Coldplay (because its a horrible band) and all of those single-person bands they've been playing, because in general they are pretty bad. They shud look at words AND music when picking a song, not just the words. Some Brand New songs would be nice too, but most people have never even heard of Brand New.
Of course this is all my opinion, and u dont have to agree.
Oh yea, ifthey could fit Interpol in there somewhere, that would be nice.

Ketchup, I like your picks, because I enjoy that style of music.
I think there have been a few missteps in the soundtrack this year ("Don't Cha" and "The Girl's Attractive" come to mind), but other songs have been great.
The Depeche Mode moment in the premiere was great, and even HIM's cover of "Wicked Games" was awesome--I just wish they had used it in some other way, instead of using it hawk the car for the stupid contest.
Like many others, I've often tracked down music I've heard on the show. One of my favorite Smallville "finds" was the song "Mona Lisa" by Grant-Lee Phillips (from sometime in Season 3, I think). And that's not the typical style of music played in the show, but the moment it was featured was spot-on, and it opened me up to an artist I've never heard before.
Maybe we can take a step back and be open to some different kinds of music. Not to say we should all march lock-step behind whatever crap music is played, but there are some artists and genres out there that we don't get to hear normally, and the Smallville team has really done well providing a wide range of musical flavors.
Just two copper coins from my change tray.

SWEET! Im a Huge Oasis Fan! I have so many of their songs, and they're still tied fer #1 on my list even after I converted to Classic Rock. And the importance of Being Idle is a classic tune heh

Well, two of your picks have been featured on Smallville before, I believe multiple times. Those being Eve 6 and Jimmy Eat World.
While Coldplay is sometimes sucky, they have only been played according to my list, 3 times. In 4 and a half seasons, that's not very many.
I think Smallville has done a very nice job of fitting the music and the words in.
Finally, rock's great, I like rock. However, it rarely fits in very well with the tone of Smallville. Maybe in Metropolis scenes, or rock ballads for some of the relationship scenes, but other than that I don't think it's the right kind of music. Besides, Smallville has a pretty eclectic choice of music, and I don't think it should be limited by genre, i.e. "rock, pop, rap, etc." I've discovered some excellent songs by listening to the stuff Smallville plays. It's nice to hear some not-so-mainstream stuff once in a while. With the exception of The Pussycat Dolls and Gretchin Wilson, I think everything this year has been excellently chosen and well-fitting to the scene.
P.S. What techno have you heard this year besides Moby's "Homeward Angel"?

No hip hop, please. :P It's another one of those things that doesn't fit in with the tone of the show at all. Even "Don't Cha" in Metropolis felt out of place.

I liked the song they played just before Doncha much better, but I haven't been able to find it, even Googling the lyrics. If anyone knows what it is, please give a heads up. :)
It's pretty amazing that Smallville manages to find a place for artists as diverse as Mindy Smith (One Moment More) and the Outthere Brothers (Boom Boom Boom). I never would have even listened to Stereophonics or Esthero, but now I've purchased both from iTunes.

I love your grammer. You make it so much easier to read [/sarcasm]
In any case, I would gladly believe Coldplay is better than Oasis, but then Coldplay would have to be able to change the way Britain looks at BritRock forever in such a way that Oasis did.
Coldplay just gets more airtimine in NA than Oasis, and cuz they're a lil newer, ppl take a shining to them.
So you heard X an Y Sold a helluva lotta albums in the first week? Be Here Now by Oasis (Also respctively the 3rd Album) sold more.
And Chris Martin even climbed up on stage once to hug Noel, so dont tell me that Coldplay doesnt respect Oasis.
Oasis > Coldplay. Period.
