I get to watch the season finale tonight, and I hear it's great. I hope they continue the series!!
Ben is a really interesting character, and I kind of wish they'd play with his healing powers a bit more. Justin just creeps me out :p

I love Carnivale.
The show hasn't gone anywhere. The entire first season aired on HBO, and then it was picked up for a second season which starts in January if I remember correctly. They are releasing the first season of Carnivale on DVD if you want to catch up before the start of the second season. It is a little pricy though.

Yeah, HBO films the entire season of their TV shows before they air them (like Six Feet Under, Dead Like Me, Carnivale).
I really enjoyed Carnivale, but I don't think I'll have time to watch it this season :\

With the first season of Carnivale coming to DVD, I think it is a safe bet that the second season will be making it to DVD as well.

Speaking of great shows on HBO, did you ever get a chance to watch Deadwood? That was another show I thought turned out to be really good. Ian McShane was amazing in that show. If you have not seen it, you should check it out.
Now getting back to Carnivale. I love the part of the show that deals with the Carnivale and Ben Hawkins. But the part of the show that is kind of hard to get into is the Brother Justin side of the story. I understand that both Ben and Justin are connected. But half the time I was tempted to fastforward through to get back to the carnivale.
I think my favorite character is Samson. You have got to love the little guy. The guy who plays him is a great actor in my opinion. The most intriguing part of the show in my opinion, is who is in charge of management.

That show is so weird!
I kind of liked it though.
I started getting into it with a friend, but we both got busy, all of the sudden with work, and were not able to watch it anymore.
The Brother Justin stuff was a little weird, but so was the whole show.
The last episode I saw, Ben kept having all those dreams about him waking up with no arms and legs and I think he saw Brother Justin there.
I don't remember much past that.
Anyone know what I am talking about?

To be honest, I hope that I get the first season on DVD for Christmas so that I can go back and rewatch the first season of Carnivale. I remember liking the show and I remember certain things. But it is one of those shows for me that I watch, remember selectively, and forget most of what I see. But I really want to try and get into the show more, especially since I love movies and books that focus on the carnival way of life.
If anyone gets a chance read "Twilight Eyes" by Dean Koontz. It is kind of similar to the film Frailty in a way. It is about a guy that can see demons that are disguised as humans, and his journey takes him into a carnival where he hooks up with a disfigured strongman and a woman who posess the same gift. If you liked Frailty and if you like Carnivale, I highly recommed it. It is one of my favorite books, and Koontz really does a good job illustrating the carnival way of life.

I just realized nobody has a thread on this show.
I've followed this show since it began.
It's a dark Twin Peaks-ish show about Good vs. Evil, Heaven vs. Hell and with powers.
Sounds cool right?
Well the first season dragged. Really dragged. It was confusing and nothing really happened.
But all the build up culminated into the birth of a fascinating story that finally kicked into gear in the last two episodes.
In the newest episodes Ben was given his destiny and knowledge of his powers and enemy.
And Brother Justin has Scudder on his way so he may as well recieve his destiny and knowledge.
The battle is about to begin and the show finally is getting moving midway through Season 2.
I read an interview that said originally he wanted to start the series at the meeting of Brother Justin and Ben but had nowhere to go after their battle.
So he came up with the back story that we've seen for Season 1 & 2 and it looks like we're getting into the big stuff. His original plans.
I'm getting into this series finally.
Anyone else?

the first season is already on DVD. But it's kinda hard to follow.
But the story is basically about the chess game between God and the Devil in the backdrop of the 50's Dust Bowl era. One man is the chosen one for God and he falls in with traveling circus of colorful characters. One man is the chosen one for the devil and he's a preacher. They each of have powers of certain kinds.
Basically the first season is them discovering who they are. They still have never even met in the second season.

I absolutely love this show and I'm glad somoene has started a thread.
Hey spoon AZ, I am pretty sure that it takes place during the 1930's depression era but either way it doesn't matter. describing the show's premise doesn't do it any justice because the theme (God vs Devil, Good vs Evil, Light vs Dark) is not a new them but the way the story is told is completely original. You just have to watch it to like it. I didn't think I would like it when the series started in 2003 but once I did I became addicted.
I never knew that the series was supposed to start with the meeting of Ben and Brother Justin. Hopefuly that means there is more to the story after season 2 ends, because I am pretty sure they are going to meet by the end of this season.
Spoon AZ

Your probably right on the time period. I was guessing. But it definitely takes place during the Dust Bowl Era which is probably around the Depression as well.
I was guessing on the 50's time period.
But yeah Daniel Knauf who created the series said it was supposed to start with that. So he must have some cool things in store for the rest of this season and season 3.
The last two episodes have been awesome.

OMG - I thought I was the only one in the world that watched this show. I have talked to absolutely no one that has ever seen the show.
Its addicting, too bad there are only like 12 or so per season. Its a fun show to try to figure out because right when you think you know what is going on, they twist it on you again.
Lately it seems like everything is happening at once and things are starting to get really good now that Ben has killed Management and Brother Justin has realized that his opposite has just gained power.
Knoxy
03-04-2005, 04:53 PM
I have to agree, the last two episodes are getting the story rolling. Especially the end of the last episode when we found out that the worker in Brother Justin's house is Sophie (How is she connected to the battle?). I wonder if she will ever see Brother Justin with his shirt off and recognize his scars from the vision she had in season 1 about the Tattooed man and her mother.
Also, the trailer for the next episode showed Libby being attacked by some men (apparently they were related to the woman and child who fell of the ferris wheel) for revenge. Did they catch up with the carny or did the carny accidentally leave her behind during their fast exit?

Man Carnivale has all of sudden become amazing TV!!
The last three episodes have been down right brilliant.
This one didn't advance too much of the overall plot but was so moving.
Jonesy's torture was hard to watch. And the aftermath was even worse. When she picked those feather's off his melted skin I almost had to look away.
Ben saving him and curing his leg gave me goosebumps.
And Sophie is the Omega?
What's the Omega? I don't remember that. It was mentioned in Season 1 wasn't it?
any help on that one?
Knoxy
03-08-2005, 04:55 PM
That episode was really good. You were right, that scene with Jonesy was brutal. As far as the Omega, I don’t remember hearing that referenced in the show before now. In biblical sense omega means end, so maybe Sophie is the key to end the good vs. evil conflict (one way or the other) once and for all. Remember the dream sequence at the site of the “Tree” where Ben and Brother Justin were running at each other and Sophie was just standing along the side and watching? Maybe whoever she chooses to side with (Ben or Brother Justin) will win the battle. That’s just my interpretation, I could be wrong.
Spoon AZ
03-08-2005, 05:03 PM
hmmm I could have sworn the Omega was mentioned at some point.
Maybe by the nerdy guy who met Brother Justin outside the radio station and had that book said something. I must research!
I definitely like Sophie better at Justin's.
She was annoying with the Carnies. Nice way to give her character an interesting direction
and her being the Omega has to have something to do with
1. Her mother was raped by the Usher I think. At least I think it is was the usher, which is how she was born
2. she has some connection with Ben as evidenced when they had sex
Knoxy
03-09-2005, 06:42 PM
You're probably right about omega being mentioned.
1. Her mother was raped by the Usher I think. At least I think it is was the usher, which is how she was born
It could have been a premonition (or warning) about what will happen to Sophie if/when she meets the usher. In this case it would be Brother Justin because he is the only person with the marks on his body.
Either way, I think Sophie will play a significant role in the outcome of the conflict. I just can't figure out what exactly that role might be.

Another mind blowing episode on Sunday!!
Season 2 has started to blow Season 1 out of the water.
Wow this episode rocked. The last 4 episodes have done more to advance the show than they did all last season and the first half of this one. I can definitely see what the creator was talking about how Season 1 was backstory to the real story he wanted to tell.
When Brother Justin popped out from the backseat with that scythe my jaw literally dropped.
And Jonesy's loyalty to Ben was great.
And Samson and Libby was great.
The newspaper reveal was great.
Lodz whole possession and return story is so creepy. Adrienne Barbeau is freaky making out with the bearded lady with those white eyes.
And that ending with Ben and Jonesy driving up to Brother Justin's camp gave me chills. Can't wait for next week! Hope they finally confront each other now that they both have their boon!
And I knew Sophie was Brother Justin's illegitimate daughter!! So that makes her the Omega. So what is the Omega I wonder?!
SupermansNotDead
03-16-2005, 02:40 PM
I think that Sophie being the Omega means that she is the daughter of a Creature of Dark, but she may be carrying the son of a Creature of Light (ie. Ben's son) so maybe she will factor in to the confrontation between Brother Justin and Ben. Maybe she even has some power to pass to whichever side she decides to take. Who knows. No one knows, thats what makes this show so great.
I totally agree that this season is kicking some ass, last season moved slow and when I saw the pacing of this season I started to wonder if this was the last season for the show. But the creator (can't recall his name) said that people who think its ending soon are wrong and there is a long way to go yet. So thats great news!

You called it! You were right.
Omega means the end, so Sophie somehow must end the battle either by judgement or physical action.
The scene with Brother Justin killing Scudder was just perfect. It could have been a scene out of a Hitchcock film (When the screen just fades to red).
I think that Sophie being the Omega means that she is the daughter of a Creature of Dark, but she may be carrying the son of a Creature of Light (ie. Ben's son)
Did you notice the sudden rain shower when Brother Justin recieved his boon to imply the significant change in his character? There was also a sudden rain shower after Ben and Sophie had sex. Maybe that was to signify that sophie had infact become pregnant.
SupermansNotDead
03-16-2005, 03:03 PM
Did anyone notice that when Ben killed the last generations Creature of light (Management), Brother Justin had a violent reaction to it. But when Brother Justin killed the last generations Creature of Dark (Scudder), Ben wasn't even aware of it, it started to rain. I think this is because Management willingly attacked Ben so Ben would kill him and inherrit his powers. But when Brother Justin killed Scudder, Scudder was not willingly giving up his powers so maybe Brother Justin isn't as powerful as he could be and Ben has the edge on him.
Maybe the rain after Sophie and Ben had sex signifies a creature of dark being conceived and the rain after Brother Justin killed Scudder signifies a Creature of Dark being killed?
Spoon AZ
03-16-2005, 03:12 PM
Could be.
The wormy book guy said that Scudder would have to be surprised in order for Justin to get the boon unless he gave it up willingly. And I think we all know he was surprised as we were.
I mean the look on his severed head says it all.
I wonder if Sophie will end up being pregnant?
What type of creature would come from the spawn of darkness that mates with the light? And if Sophie is pregnant is her child the next one to either take over for Ben or Justin when they are killed?
I wonder if we'll see an all out drag down brawl between Brother Justin's wayward homeless followers and all the Carnies for the finale?

You're right This episode was very good but not as good as the last few.
I loved everyone's reactions to Jonesy's healing. I was hoping that Samson would tell Ruthie that Ben healed her and her son but I guess she will put that all together on her own. I thought Lodz was going to be behind the curtain when Lila went into the trailer to see management. I really liked the final sequence of the episode also. the music combined with BJ and Iris looking out of their window watching the Carnival setup was spooky.
I had to Tivo the episode so next weeks trailer got cut off. I only saw the beginning of it. I'll catch it when HBO shows a repeat this week. I'm sure it's going to be amazing.

I finally saw the trailer and it was just amazing! BJ's face when he saw the Carnies sitting in his living room was too good. Also the interaction between BJ and Sophie.
Sophie to BJ: "Go to Hell"
BJ to Sophie: "Why, I want to bring it here."
absolutely Awsome!
I don't think BJ realizes how important Sophie is because it looks like he is using her as bait to flush Ben out. If he really wanted her on his side he could just will her like he does everyone else.
The episode discription seems interesting:
In the official description of the season finale it states that Justin forces Iris to face her fear of heights and that Ben performs his most important healings.
I wonder what Justin make Iris do and who are the people that Ben heals?

I enjoyed the first season a lot. The parts at the Carnivale were my favorite. The parts that bored me a little, were the parts that focused on Brother Justin. However, I have been waiting to watch season two until it finishes, and there is only one more episode until the finale. I am stoked to watch it, because I recently saw a preview for the finale, and it looks like Ben and Justin will actually confront each other. When I heard Justin's voice in one of the trailers saying that the carnival was his enemy, it got me all excited to watch. I also love the stuff having to do with the mysterious "management" and Samson rules. I like the small actor who plays the character.

So they did get approved for a third season?
Holy crap that finale was awsome! Ben healing people and BJ going psycho on everyone was great. I love the all out evil BJ. That sucks what happened to Jonesy though, I realy liked his character.
I believe she was healing him. We thought the rain shower represented her being pregnant with Ben's child when in it really wasn't. Sophie was born a creature of darkness (COD) but recieved healing powers from Ben, a creature of light (COL),through sex. Which is why she was able to heal BJ at the end.
Sophie being the Omega must mean she is the end or has the capabilities to bring the end of days. She is going to be bad @ss in season 3 (If there is one) because she will have recieved a boone as a COL and a COD.

There are some posts on www.imdb.com that say from unofficial sources that the show has been picked up. I'm pretty sure it will be renewed. The Wire has worse ratings and it has been renewed, besides ratings don't mean as much to HBO as they do to the major networks that rely on advertisement money.

The finale was very good. I liked it alot.
AICN reported today that Variety said renewal for the show is looking bleak and it probably won't get picked up. If true that really sucks.
Apparently the finale did well for the show in ratings.
And Sophie being the Omega may not mean "the end". Or it might.
But alpha and omega are opposites. It's possible her being the Omega refers to her being the opposite of Ben. Same powers but the evil version of him.
