View Full Version : A Ton Of Foreshadowing

This episode was AWESOMELY PACKED with foreshadowing the show's future. This might have been the most important episode of the show yet as far plot development. First, as many have made great points about, we saw that Jonathan is clearly going to be GONE in the near future and Martha ISN'T. The scene of the long shot of Clark, Martha, and Krypto standing in barn doorway was a defintite bigtime foreshadopw moment. I think most of us know, it will be those 3 standing alone on the Kent farm in the show's final episode.
Also, we began to see Lois heading down the journalism path. Chloe is clearly the catalyst and that look Lois gave at the Daily Planet sign was BIG!
We saw Lex almost do to Lionel what he is destined to do. One Luthor must go in the end, and for a brief second, Lex thought about ending it.
We also now know that Zod, at some point will have an impact on the show. His near escape out of the phantom zone last nigth was huge foreshadowing of Clark's future as Superman.
I think the fireside moment was key to. I'm still of the belief(well it's more hope really!) that Clark will fall for Chloe in the end and that moment's like the one last night are precious for there won't be many once Clark falls for her because Chloe I think will also die eventually(I just hope its not this season.)
I THINK THE 3 NOTS LIONEL PLAYED WILL MEAN SOMETHING TOO...if i could just hear them again!!!!!!

From what I got out of it, the writers made it seem like Martha would die, but after she said to Clark, and basically to us, the viewers, " I am not going anywhere for a long time", I think that she won't be killed off. In my mind at least, it seemed to be clear that it's either Jonathan Kent or Cloe. In the movie around this age Jonathan Kent has his heart attack and dies, and the mother is there to guide him and so is Jor El. I think all these lessons and talkings Jonathan gives Clark is trying to drive the point of being a good person, so that when he dies Clark has the proper foundation to be a good person. I also think that Jonathan Kent is expendable because martha would represent and recall his teachings if Clark strays, while Jor El can get more time in guiding Clark than.
Cloe seemed to be like another option because of the way yesterdays episode ended. You could almost see the gleam in Lois's eye, and almost got the sense that she was starting to dig the investigating reporting gig. It's almost as though Cloe's character is the hidden ambitious side of Lois, and the death of Cloe would is something that could bring it out, and cause Lois to jump in the cloe role and work and keep her memory alive for her. Also it makes sense because right now we get the sense that Lois is pretty much not doing anything with her life, as lex called her a muffin pusher, college drop out. So, to me, it makes sense that the death of Cloe would bring out the ambitious side of Lois and, at first, make her want to keep Cloe's legacy alive, and in time actually be good at, and like her job because, it give her a sense that she is making a difference in the world. In the Aquaman episode she alluded to how that character trait is something that she looks for and so makes that she herself follow and strive to make a difference, thus her, in the future falling in love with Clark/Superman. I dont know, if this is right, but some things I noticed and thought of as I was watching smallville last night.

Ys, this episode was great for the "what's gonna happen" during the last runs of Smallville. It was excellent and I think you've mentioned the best point.
...oh, and the notes Lionel played? They were B, A, G just above second C if you have a piano. ;)

Thanks for those notes...as soon as I get to a piano...I'm writing a song for Lionel out of them and maybe figure out the significance(if any) they have toward the show!!!

I never caught on to all those. Very cool.
I've just assumed Jonathan will be the one to go.

I think you still may be right. Jonathan could still very well go, after all in the movie he dies around this time, while clark is in college, and comes home.

Really no one knows what's gonna happen. I'll just wait and see. The person who dies is gonna be one thing i don't want to be spoiled about.

Same, which I why I sort of stray away from the spoiler board since people don't put, "IT SAYS WHO DIES IN 512!!" They put something like, "____ DIES OMGOMG!" you know?

I only caught the last 5 minutes of the show, which had me tearing my hair out because I spent all week asking myself 'Is it Thursday yet?' But, in those 5 minutes I saw the fireside chat and Chloe's talk with Lois. Based on those two scenes, all I can say is that Clark is taking huge steps to becoming Superman in his emotional growth thanks to Chloe and their friendship, while Lois is taking huge steps to becoming the passionate reporter we all love thanks to Chloe.
Because of that, I really feel that they will have her die at the series' end. I don't believe they will take her out any time soon b/c the show and critical characters still need her, but I do see it becoming the catalyst that sends Clark out on his journey of the world and then back to the DP and to Superman, as well as the catalyst that sends Lois to the DP and being the best darn reporter ever. My bet is that Jonathon will be the first to go, and soon.

I still think Pa Kent will die. Chloe can't die just yet.

This episode did have a foreshadowing. Even though Pa Kent ended up dying in "Reckoning", I wonder if Chloe's line of "I'd rather die than reveal your secret" will have some sort of impact on the show.
