For an artificial lifeform, Brainiac sure showed plenty of emotion in that Fortress. He damn near wet himself as he called out for Zod to come forth. He's probably very used to kneeling before Zod ;)

In the movies, Zod was played by Terrance Stamp. In "Solitude", the seemed to take Stamp's likeness and create an image out of it.

Who knows who created Brainiac in the smallville universe!

I think theres at least 2 versions of who he is, and how he came about in the comics.

For the SV version my money is on Jor-el creating him with Zod reprogramming him.
