I just wonder if they kept that prerecorded Jor-El stuff that they used in the trailer for voice-overs in the movie, or if it was just for the benefit of the trailer.
Also, who was the kid doing jumps in the corn-field? If it was another actor besides Routh, and it wasn't Tom Welling, then why the fork didn't they use TW for the young Clark scenes?

This was a bad trailer but it seems like par for the course with a bad take on the suit, poor plot from what I hear and the lead...I have yet to see any pix of Routh that didn't pale in comparison to Smallville's Tom Welling.

It was more of a teaser instead of a trailer it looked decent to me. But the whole time i found myself thinking "That should be Tom, that should Tom!!" I am kinda bummed he's not playing Superman i think he would of been great, it's like i've seen him on Smallville as Clark all these years and now i want to see him as Superman. On the series finale they better show him in the costume even a little bit or i will be heated.

It sparked my interest but nothing more. I'm a big fan of Smallville and even more a fan of the Superman movie's with Reeves. All that I've seen and read about for the newest "Superman Returns" movie says bad choice of actors (except for maybe Spacey playing Lex), bad costume design, bad story. I think the only think they have going for them is set construction and visual FX. That in mind, I'll still probably see it at least once.
Oh one other MAJOR thing that will be lacking in this movie: no John Williams score.

No John Williams score??!! Part of what makes the superman movies so great is that music! How are you going to make a Superman movie without? Their already blowing it right there.

Even if they didn't want him as Superman, how can they justify another Clark with Smallville still on TV
However, you never saw that Clark from the front and he did kind of look formilar from the back. Maybe a certain someone snuck off during the break between filming and did some Clark scenes for the movie? It's not like Tom, aw I mean Clark hasn't lied to us before.

The reason they can justify it is actually just simple business. By having Superman Returns, the WB can crater to the people who don't watch Smallville and have wanted a Superman movie for a long time, and Smallville can exist on its own grounds with its own following or the mixed follwing.
Singer wanted this film to have no real link to Smallville except the Fortess of Solitude, which both the show and film updated from the original Donner film.
As for Tom Welling in there, I'm doubting it, but he could make a cameo somewhere.

I loved the trailer. Considering the fact the movie is in production still, and CGI is barely starting. They did a damn good job.

I don't understand the negative comments on the teaser. Initially, I was skeptical on the plotline but after reading more about the movie, seeing the teaser and on-line photos I am convinced it will be a worthy successor to the original movies. I think the movie is really going to highlight Superman's origins, his struggle for identity and his place in the world in a way that the original movies never wanted to or could. Audiences have matured a lot since the release of Superman I.
Having said that, it is a teaser and if the producers of this movie haven't taken anything from the recent Spider-Man and Batman movies then we are in for real trouble. People seem to value a more mature (read: less campy) super hero movie.
My only real concern is Kevin Spacey as Lex. I am worried that he might make the character way over the top. Perhaps my concerns are not justified, but five years of Michael Rosenbaum as Lex on Smallville have really spoiled us with a character with depth that many can identify with.
Just my thoughts.

After watching the trailer for the third time, it is starting to grow on me. The one thing that got to me most of all was the absolutely awful CGI suit + flying shot of Superman above Earth then flying down. Hopefully they will clean that up as time goes along and it will be a much better looking film. Like I said in another thread, I'm still holding out hope that it will be awesome, and the teaser just didn't do it justice, but I am skeptical.

The teaser trailer sucked. It was supposed to grab you attention and make you want to know what the movie is about. I didn't get excited at all. It was so boring. But I am trying my not to judge a book by its cover or in this case a movie by a bad teaser trailer, poor actor choices, bad costumes, boring story line....it isn't looking so good.

First off, it's a teaser, not a trailer. A trailer is what gives a highlight on the plot of the film what it is ultimately about. A teaser is simply too inform people (who aren't like us and stay up to date on current happenings in the movies) that there is in fact another superman movie on the horizon.
That said, it did suck and I think it highlights one of the biggest problems with where singer is going with it.
Singer is being liberal with things he shouldn't be (ex. the superman suit) and conservative with the things he shouldn't be. He's trying to hard to make this a sequal to the other films. The best parts of this teaser, in my opinion, were the parts that he's taken from the first film, John williams score and Brando's performance.
No matter how much he tries, regardless of the quality of the actual film, this is NOT going to stand along side the original films staring Reeves. It just plain can't. There's a difference of 20 years for crying out loud. It's going to be viewed out of that context and he should have realized that.
It should have been a restart. Not neccessarily starring Tom Welling, but it should have been able to stand on it's own two feet without even being associated with the others.

You people need to just chill out! The teaser was fan-freakin-tastic! Some of you are judging the movie by the teaser? How in the world can you do that? And you call yourself Superman fans.
I can recall a time when people did the same thing with Batman Begins, whether it was the suit, the car, the actors, or what have you. But look what happened...BEST BATMAN MOVIE EVER! and right now...BEST SUPERHERO MOVIE EVER!
Now, people are doing the same with Superman Returns, I can't wait till Returns hits theaters and makes Batman Begins look like Batman and Robin.

I assume you mean people are saying Brandon Routhe is not Superman. And he isn't, nor is Tom Welling in My opinion, he is a young Clark Kent. Christopher Reeve is the only Superman in my book.
You people need to just chill out! The teaser was fan-freakin-tastic! Some of you are judging the movie by the teaser? How in the world can you do that? And you call yourself Superman fans.
Your entitled to your opinion about the teaser, but considering the fact that you started your post with I'M MAD AS HELL I think *you* need to chill out.
I'm not judging the film by the teaser. I'm simply saying that it's highlighting the underlying flaw in what Singer is trying to do. My opinion on the film is being reinforced by the teaser, not defined by it.
Finally, I wouldn't call myself a *real* Superman fan, i'm far more of a Batman fan. And on that note,
I can recall a time when people did the same thing with Batman Begins, whether it was the suit, the car, the actors, or what have you. But look what happened...BEST BATMAN MOVIE EVER! and right now...BEST SUPERHERO MOVIE EVER!
I sure as heck don't recall such a time. All I remember is everyone going, OMG THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO RULE!!! Every single forum I posted on concerning the film had nothing but good things to say about the production. My experience was that it had already been declared a success on the net long before it had even reached theaters.
Now, people are doing the same with Superman Returns, I can't wait till Returns hits theaters and makes Batman Begins look like Batman and Robin.
Well, we'll just see what happens.

As Bryan said, to the newer generation of Superman fans, Smallville is their Superman Origin story, whereas to the older generation, Superman: The Movie is their origin story. And given that there's much more story left to tell in Smallville, it wouldn't be fair to the fans to cancel it for the sake of a movie that they might not be interested in.
And also, don't forget that there's another Clark on TV in Justice League Unlimited (which also has a Batman). Should they cancel that as well?
Admittedly I would've liked to see Tom Welling as Superman, but I accept that he's not, which may be for the better in that Smallville can continue.

WTF!!! I never said anything like that when I first saw the BB teaser. In fact I was thinking that I might actually like batman after I saw BB. Also, don't try and force your opinion on everyone else. I, and anyone else, have right to think it sucked. Perhaps your standards are just lower than ours.
Also, i seriously doubt that SR will out do BB. That was just a brilliant film. Why? Bcus it had great actors. Kevin Spacey is great but I don't know about the rest.

Yes, some people are judging the movie by the teaser and other things. You apparantely are too, so don't be hypocritical.

I liked it....im pumped for the movie...its too early to start saying its gonna be "flop of the year" or whatever...
Anyways I know ill be checking it out come June!
Personally, I loved the trailer, and I like very few trailers.
I think the use of voiceover was nostalgic and moving. It reminded me of a phrase my father always told me: "Remember the days when men could fly?"
My father meant that there was an age where man dreamed (flight included). And I really think that's the charm behind and attraction to the Superman mythos. Really, it's a form of hope. It's a way for us to dream of something/someone that will always be there to help us. This teaser trailer was solemn, hopeful, and beautiful.
I always told my father that we still dream. It's just that we want to fly higher.

You must be mistaken, BATMAN BEGINS got praise from Day 1, As soon as everyone hear Joel wasn't making the movie & Christian Bale was cast as BATS, the praises were flying, and when The First teaser Trailer came out, The Bat fans went wild. Then The Superbowl trailer along with the badass Batmoblie.
For many fans BB was already going to be a Super Smach Hit. And it turned out to be a SUPER MEGA SMACH HIT.
And Yes BB is THE BEST SUPERHERO Movie ever made. (It had, an Amazing cast, A Great Story, And it stayed true to The Comic book.)

CGI suit? CGI cape, but I didn't see the CGI of the suit. Where was that?
I also agree that the critcism heaped on Batman Begins by some turned out to be bogus (his costume, the car), and that movie ended up being the best Batman movie ever.
A bit of trivia, Kevin Spacey auditioned for the role of Clark in the first Superman movie. :)
One thing: Routhe is a couple years younger than Welling, age 26 compared to 28 IIRC. But I think they are aiming for a younger Superman to appeal more to young audiences. I'm willing to give him a chance, just like I was willing to give Bale a chance to be Bruce Wayne.
There's also some input from Donner on Superman Returns, Bryan Singer directs it, and he is paying serious homage to the first two Superman movies. I'm going to be optimistic here. :)

I didn't watch the trailer and I won't watch the film. The story doesn't appeal and the casting looks horrible (I don't know anything about Routh, I'm more referring to Bosworth and Spacey). That's MY opinion and I can feel that way if I want to without some people not be able to "take it anymore." Get over yourself, I have just as much right to dislike it as you have to like it. You are the one that needs to chill out.
Chistopher Reeve is Superman and Tom Welling is Clark Kent--there's no more room for anyone else for me. I would have been willing to see what Tom would be like as Superman, but it doesn't seem like that will ever happen. So be it.

The first movie was pure Donner and it was pretty good. He had the 2nd one ready to go as well before he got fired, as a result the new director made it slightly campy.
The bottom line is, the first 2 movies had a great story and were really good, and its the 3rd and 4th movies which were not made by Donner that were terrible.

I agree totally. I think 3 and 4 had potential but there was a lot of crap in those films. Donner had about half of Superman II filmed IIRC before he was kicked off the project, just from what he shot alongside the Superman I filming.

I think this teaser trailer for Superman Returns is done very similarly to that for Ep II. You see a bunch of short glimpses with a rhythmic background (that of one of the great Superman themes by John Williams coinciding with the haunting and yet wonderfully nostalgic Marlon Brando voiceover).
There's a better reason why this teaser is so good. It's also a "tone-maker". It's hopeful, grandiose, inspiring despite the dark, threatening colors of the sets. It's a glimmer of light in a dome of darkness, so to speak. To me, that's what Superman has always symbolized. A glimmer of hope in a dark world. A reason to look at the heavens and wonder if man can fly.
This teaser has done what few have been able to do for me: I want to see more. Come On! Who didn't get shivers when we heard Marlon Brando say, "They can be a great people, Kal-El"?
I completely agree and I got complete chills and I automatically wanted to see more!
Jor-El "They can be a great people, Kal-El. They wished to be."
Cut to a scene of Superman rising above dark clouds into the golden sunlight.
Jor-El "They are only lack the light to show them the way."
Cut to a scene of Brandon's eyes closed
Jor-El "It is this, above all else, that I have sent them you, my son."
Camera: Brandon opens his eyes, we see a quick shot of Brandon in the Superman suit and then Superman does a quick dive from space and flies to Earth, entering Earth's atmosphere.
Brillant!
Though I'm confused why they showed this trailer. There is another one I saw months ago with Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth in it, that was longer than this one, but I've scoured everywhere and I can't find it now! Maybe it was a spill...

I thought the teaser looked great, surprisingly, because everything else I've ever heard about this film sounds like it's going to be majorly cheesy crap. :(
I hope they can pull it off but, it might turn out to be one of those things that could have been great, but was ruined by a couple of phenominally bad ideas. like Lois with a kid and keeping the '78 movies "comic relief" version of Lex.

The suit certainly looked CGI when he was up in the air. Heck, Routh looked CGI when he was up in the air. :x It could have been an influence of the awful CGI cape, though. It just looked so...fake. Compared to Superman: The Movie where the flying looks believable even by today's standards, it was just a let down.
Again I say, hopefully it will get better once the movie is finished and polished.

Well, most of us loved Superman: The Movie and Superman 2. When you have a large group of people who loved something, and a small group of people who thought it was "cheesy", then you usually pay attention to the large group, i.e. the majority.
If the movie turns out anything like Superman: The Movie, I'll be much more pleased than I am currently based on the teaser.

I think we have to keep an open mind. This film is not Donnor's it is Bryan Singer's. I (my opinion) like what he did with the x-men movies, i think he will do a great job with Superman Returns.
The suit is different, but I think that marks a change in the character of Superman. This character is not the same one he was in the Donnor film but from his experience he has change for the better. So I THINK that this suit marks that change in Superman. Doesnt the comic superman suit change a few times anyways?
Until I see the movie a few times I am not saying anything bad about it. I for one is excited about it and the trailer was awesome!!!!

I agree with your opinion. The look of the trailer is amazing -- as if it was shot in 1950s Technicolor. If the movie lives up to the look and mood set by the trailer (someone used the word "tone" -- good word), I'll be very happy with it.

He doesn't look like Superman to me. Singer hired him because of his Clark Kent look....not the Superman look. I have faith in Singer, but this trailer made me sad.. :(
I thought that while he did look okay in the Superman suit (I personally hate the dark colours of it), he did look more like a Clark Kent to me.
I still think that the movie will be amazing and I'm gonna go see it rain nor shine.
Christopher Reeve passed the torch to Tom Welling (Smallville's Clark) and for that reason among many I'd hoped they'd wait to make a Superman movie.
Seeing Brandon Routh in that Superman suit kinda of made me smile sadly too. It reminded me of Christopher Reeve and how much I miss him. He's no longer the last on screen Superman.
Brandon Routh, I have one thing to say to you: "Please do us proud"

I did not feel Brandon R. looked like Superman material - he was too "pretty" and did not appear to be big like Tom Welling. When I picture the mythical character of Superman, I picture someone who has a large frame and square jaw and very good looking - Christopher Reeve and Tom Welling - this guy looks more like a Leonardo DeCaprio (spell?) someone a 12 year old girl would like in a teeny bopper band!

My friend, I would agree, great movie, but I still have to give the best Batman movie to the first one. However, I can see why you say that. But as best Superhero movie? I am saying that because of my obsessive love for everything Superman, I would have to go with Superman 1 & 2, but mostly 1 for the greatest ever. I know, I know, but I really love those movies.

Lying is ugly, and I truly do not appreciate you saying anything other than the answer to the question I asked you. I have not been reported and the times I reported you I said nothing. Please keep this to a discussion about Superman. I asked you what you liked about Superman and you refuse to answer and then say something that is not true and add good luck with that. If you do not want your opinion questioned then do not post hateful things. I truly do not appreciate lying especially. You win, I will not ask you anymore what you actually like about Superman and you can continue doing whatever. I came here for a great Smallville/Superman discussion, not to get into it with someone who does not defend anything they say.
Everyone else, I am sorry for this post. I enjoy these discussions and I enjoy your opinions. I won't continue this with him. I love Superman and this is not what he is about. Thank you for having me, I appreciate it more than you know and I appreciate all of you.

 New kids... <sigh> we were all new once.
I am SO pumped about this movie now! I was originally a little wary of the Brandon Routh dude, but looking at the other excellent casting decisions, I'll trust Singer on that one. Spacey as Lex Luthor sounds like the coolest thing in the entire world, and I'm literally giddy about it. I was a little concerned that Kate Bosworth would be to young for the Lois Lane role, but after seeing her in "Beyond the Sea" (with Kevin Spacey, actually), I'm not too worried about that.
I'm honestly so excited I could pop! Is it summer yet?

I noticed that with Jack Nocholson as the Joker and Kevin Spacey as Lex are strong hints that the bad guy as a famous actor can help a movie like this. I thought Batman 1 was awesome, however Batman Returns was not so good. Jack was missing. Maybe Kevin Spacey will make the movie. I still know that Superman will be awesome no matter

I am a little worried for Kevin Spacey, He doesn't seem very Lex Luthor looking to me.
I'll have to see the movie, maybe I'm just too used to Michael Rosenbaum's Lex.
I will wait and watched the movie before judgement.

In one of the recent blogs Spacey shows part of his Luthor, and he does this stare that just gives chills.
In SR Lex is going to go to the FoS, and end up stabbing Superman. This is no campy Luthor whatsover.

DMA, "You've been reported for numerous posting rule violations." means I reported you for numerous posting violations. It doesn't mean "numerous people reported you" or "you were reported numerous times." There was no lying involved.
"Good luck with that" was sincere since I knew you'd have your posts edited and/or get a warning since what you posted isn't allowed here.

I have to agree with the "Routh looks too young" posts; as the owner of a different Superman website said, Superman's supposed to be like my dad. As in, one that I look up to and aspire to be like, not one I can relate to as I would with Spider-Man. Even though Chris Reeve was about the same age as Routh when he wore the tights, he still looked like someone older, wiser and capable of shouldering the problems of the world.

I totally and completely agree, but I'll still wait and see the movie.
Let's see if this guy, can pull this off, shall we?

That's because the late Christopher Reeve a tad taller with a much broader build at the end of his Superman run. And I'll add (as I've said before) that in my book, no one did it better in pulling off a Clark Kent "par excellance" than the late Christopher Reeve!!!!:D :D :D
To all of us I think he was "The Superman"!!!   :D
