I grew up with Goldeneye, I learned and loved the controls on Goldeneye, and as cool as Halo is, it kind of felt weird to me. I'm not a regular XBox user and I didn't like the movement controls (or only being able to carry 2 guns). I played it only once for a couple of hours but in two hours, Goldeneye left a better impression.

So - Goldeneye.

Halo is catching up! Come on guys, what game did u grow up with? Anyone who was born after goldeneye's prime can't fathom its greatness. But trust me, if Goldeneye hadn't been amazing, Halo would not exist.

Actually I grew up with Goldeneye but I prefer Halo so your entire statement there is false, just becuase yougrow up with a game like Goldeneye doesn't mean that a newer game like halo can't be better

I have to go with Goldeneye, mainly because of the nostalgic reasons, and it was the game that got me into shooters (and James Bond,) like it did for most people actually. BTW, I suck at Halo and always lose

Goldeneye

The game is the father of all console FPS games. It was beautiful(at the time) it was incredibly fun, the multiplayer unrivaled.

Halo exists because of the road Goldeneye paved.

Magus

Exactly! Thanks slade :)
The statement isn't entirely false since truthfully and factually there would be no halo without goldeneye. To each his own.

definitely Goleneye. and i would like to throw in that i agree that Halo wouldn't exist without Goldeneyes existince. of course if given the choice between a fps or a sports game, i'm going to go with the sports game over both of them.

I voted goldeneye, though I have to say it's not much better Halo. I think the reason Goldeneye is such a favorite is, as BG said, we grew up with goldeneye and it was basically the only good shooter out on the market besides Perfect Dark.

Plus, the group competitions are so much more satisfying when playing Halo compared to Goldeneye I beg to differ, I think the controls to Halo are fairly simple compared to other games even Goldeneye. I was playing Battlefield 2 recently and I realised how simple of a game Halo really is. Dont' get me wrong, simplicity in some ways makes a game good but not great.

I liked Goldeneye. I wore out two N64s playing that game with friends. It stayed on the Nintendo Power charts for four years.

One day, my little brother (who was five at the time) took all of my games somewhere and I never saw it again.

I got an XBOX when Halo came out. I love Halo. I played the first one until I had to get a new XBOX. I wore out the Thompson drive inside of it.

When Halo 2 came out, I started playing it with all of my friends at school. We'd play at night on the LAN the school provided. Over the summers, we all played on XBOX Live. We're all on different sides of the state, but its as if we never left the dorm we lived in.

I loved Goldeneye. I learned to play a FPS on Goldeneye. I voted for Halo.

i voted goldeneye.

i thought it was the best fps out there at the time. goldeneye was the standard that all other console fps' would be measured.

as for halo, i wasn't into the original as much as i was with the second one. i don't have the original xbox or a 360, so i played it at friends' houses or when i was at work (we held halo tournaments at the theatre i used to work at for the public). with halo 3 coming out next year, i'm thinking about picking up a 360 (i might even pick it up sooner).

For what Goldeneye was able to popularize with multiplayer shooters, I would give them the award of being the most inspiring fp-shooter of the 90s. (which says a lot because Wolfenstein and DOOM trully were inspiring fp-shooters); leaving Goldeneye with huge shoes to fill. And in my opinion, it not only filled them, it filled them well.

All of you have valid points, but recently, I went back and gave Goldeneye another shot, and let me tell you, two years of two joysticks kind of screws with ur N64 co-ordination... seriously... but still, Halo has the better range of weapons, and enemies, and vehicles, and IMHO, Halo will be the FPS by which all others are judged in the future... hence Black was a flop...:p:lol:

My ex-bf and I used to play Goldeneye all the time. I never got an Xbox because I don't like Microsoft (which is why I own a Mac and not a PC), so I've only played Halo once or twice. I never could get into it.

The only drawback Goldeneye had was you couldn't jump.

Comparing Goldeneye to Halo??? That's like comparing cats to dogs! They are both animals but different in their own way.

Goldeneye is the classic that set the bar high for 3-D shooter games.
Halo is just pure fun.

I picked Goldeneye because it was first. However, both games are great and deserve two thumbs up each! :D

Goldeneye is the true father of 3D shooters. *kicks doom in the nuts* It is the best shooting game i have ever played.

Halo is a fine game but, despite its fans protests, it did not innovate much. Instead it built on the foundations goldeneye created. It wasn't a game i enjoyed playing but i could appreciate it. That being said i preferred the timesplitters series.

As goldeneye's rights are a giant clustermess it would be very difficult to have it remade considering Nintendo still have a say. Cross platform downloadable game anyone? All the companies benefit then! Update the frame rate though.

Well, for me Halo was the first game I remember playing that used the dual-analog control every FPS uses today as a default. It also popularized the rebounding health bar and had a good co-op mode. And I know people really got into the mythology and then Halo 2 came and swept the world with the online multiplayer.

But... honestly? I've always thought the game was kinda' boring in parts. The environments are huge but there's not much in the way of strategy other than, "duck behind this rock to recover your health and then pop up and keep shooting." And your story-based objectives were basically, "Go here, turn this on, go over here, shoot them up, etc, rinse, repeat."

Now what Halo does have going for it is that it's fun and the reason I think for most people who prefer it over GoldenEye is because they not only played Halo first but probably didn't really have a gaming system before the Xbox. How can "Oh, the graphics are better in Halo" be a legitimate argument? They're from different generations. And have you popped it in lately? Compared to this gen's games, Halo doesn't look too hot. So, I think, people who prefer Halo never got to own or regularly play an N64. The N64 was never cutting edge for them. Give a 12-year old an Xbox today - that kid's going to be disappointed.

My favorite is GoldenEye because it's fun, the license helps (c'mon guys, it's Bond!), the music is catchy, the multiplayer is loads of fun, and yes, the nostalgia helps. That game kicked so much ass. And in the days before achievements you were replaying the game hours on end to unlock the cheat codes to unlock DK mode and invulnerability, unless you had the internet or a magazine subscription and just looked up the codes. Inputting those were fun in their own right too.

Also, before GoldenEye, you say "console FPS" and people answer, "Huh?" By the time Halo came out there was Perfect Dark on the market, EA had made two more Bond FPSs, the PC had more first-person shooters than it knew what to do with, and other people were getting in on the shooter action. All Halo really did was standardize it. It refined the genre, but GoldenEye put it on the map in the first place.

Lastly, I'd rather see GoldenEye come out for Wii's Virtual Console. Playing the same low-polygon characters in HD would lose it's novelty for me after a while, and Nintendo could update it to 420p since that's the best Wii can do right now - but they could also add Wii-mote control (with support for the Classic Controller, of course). The Wii can also do online multiplayer and technically voice chatting via Wii Speak, but the main thing for me is replaying the story mode and then kicking butt in local multiplayer. Split-screen was great because you could see their reactions and get in front of the TV when you were losing. You can't do that online.

That said, we'll probably see it on XBLA. They got Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark, so they'll probably get this one. And at least they would add stuff. From Nintendo's track record of VC releases, they just throw the game up there sans any updates of any kind. BUT, if they took that risk of adding IR control, I think it would actually add something good to the game. I think that's what the Wii is good for. Waggle - no. First-person shooters - yes.

I thought Timsplitters 1 had those controls as standard? You can't really claim using an old control system as your main control system innovation. I dislike rebounding health but they did do that first.

That said, we'll probably see it on XBLA.

Thats the problem. When Rareware was sold they retained Perfect Dark, Banjo and Conker. Goldeneye is owned in part by both Nintendo and Rare. Microsoft won't allow nintendo to publish it and nintendo won't allow microsoft to publish it.

Have you seen what they did with Super Mario Brothers 3? Instead of releasing the SNES version which had better visuals and better controls, they release the NES version. Why nintendo, why?

I thought Timesplitters 2 had the same movement controls as GoldenEye (move and look left/right with left analog, strafe and look up/down with right analog) so I assumed the first Timesplitters had that, but I've never played it.

I dislike rebounding health but they did do that first.
I like how some games compromise. 24: The Game, for example, has a health bar that's divided into five segments. If you take damage equivalent to a whole segment, you lose that segment, but if you still have a sliver of a segment, that segment will rebound.

Personally, I'll always have mixed feelings about it. I enjoy the rebounding health in Rainbow Six Vegas but I could do without pummeling lead into enemies on World At War only for them to have the Extra Health perk equipped, dash behind a column or cover of some sort, and then pop out and shoot you in the head.

Tell me about it! When you snipe someone that should be it. I can't stand it when Juggernaut MP40 takes a bullet to the head and thanks to the perk hides in the corner for a minute before sprinting for you hiding place. Ive actually hit a guy with 9 sprinsteen sniper rounds only for him to hide after each hit. Bugger still lived to throw a grenade in my window.

j03superbat
06-14-2009, 10:58 AM
That's why I prefer Rainbow Six Vegas. Make no bones about it, in that game, you're going to die. Even with rebounding health, the only way you're going to take a lot of damage and live is if, maybe, you have maximum armor equipped, and that tremendously slows you down.

Unfortuantely, I don't play it as much as CoD because there are way WAY more people on CoD.

Do you play on Live or PSN?

I actually prefer the wii's controls by a mile but 360/PS3 versions have more levels and the glitches get patched. cliffside is close to ruined on the wii version.

j03superbat
06-15-2009, 03:53 PM
What's up with Cliffside on the Wii version?

And I actually do enjoy the Wii controls. My next question was actually going to be how do the Wii controls feel for World At War. I'm glad they're good. Will you be getting The Conduit?

27CDruid
06-15-2009, 04:59 PM
On the wii version you can glitch right into a rock beside the starting spawn point and run around underground killing everyone whilst invincible. Since the person who does this usually lays a BB in the spot its near impossible to defeat them. 50% of the time that the stage is chosen people use the glitch.

The wii controls for the game are amazing. everything works perfectly. It does make it a bit harder than the other versions but experience will give you rewards in that area.

Ive already preordered it. ;)

Well that's what I hoped for. I'll have to GameFly it one of these days.
