View Full Version : If makes no sense to have JK run for Senator

JK's charactor has always tried to protect/hide Clark from the world, atleast until he is old enough and now he's going to run for Senator? This makes no sense as we all know running for public office your life gets thoroughly investigated by reporters/media etc.. Hence as a public figure your life becomes public knowledge. Heck Chloe back in high school started looking into Clark's adoption and almost figured it out (at the time) it was fake and now you'll have people with much more resources looking into his life and family. It just makes no sense and goes against everything his charactor has developed into.

Thoughts?

Yea, I find it somewhat random. I could see him running for President of Farmes Assoc. or something, but such an open political position as Senator, it's a bit out there..

i was thinking that as well. Although maybe the media doesn't care that much about a state senator unless it comes out that they did something scandalous (like have an affair with a stripper who suddenly is murdered). I never hear anything about the local state senators in my area.

It should've been counselman or mayor. Jonathan Kent has NO polical background and is NOT qualified to be senator, despite whatever Duke boy says.

Well this is the shows 5th season. Most shows start running out of ideas by that time. What they are doing is typical, especially for the WB.

he won't end up running.. it'll get tossed around for a few episodes and then for those exact reasons he'll drop out...

Yeah, who will tend the farm?

Though it wasn't clear, I assume he's running for the state legislature, not the US Senate. That may not be unreasonable since his district could be nothing but farm towns where he would be a good candidate and there is not the same kind of press mudraking as national elections.

Plus he wouldn't have the money to run for the national senate.

A guy with a heart condition is going to run for state senate?

Against the bottomless funds of Lex Luthor? You fool!

i agree this stupid for JK to run for Senate.. come on he's a local farmer from Smallville, Kansas.. he has no idea of politics and he would put a spotlight on his family (clark).

come on SV, how stupid is this..

I agree 100% with Quadrotriticale, Jonathan Kent would never put his family in the public eye. I know running for State Senator is not like running for National office, but JK has always been careful and family oriented. Although now I think about it, JK just might run to block Lex from Office. You could make an argument that the best thing for the Kent family is Lex Luthor not to be the next State Senator of Kansas. But if I had to choose, I would say JK would never run for office with the public eye on his family, and his illegal adoption with Luthor always has over the Kents.

It's a good, think-outside-the-box-idea, but a llittle weird. Also, who's keeping the farm afloat with Clark busy in school? It detracts from the 'struggling family' side.

I think it is a good storyline, because it creates another point of conflict between Lex and Clark.

Jonathan Kent is a man of high moral standards and character. It seems completely plausible such a person would want to go into politics to make a difference and help his fellow farmers.

it is a little weird for to make him run. it would have been better if it was mayor of smallville or something else.

Good points but he would never do it at the risk of exposing his son.

JK's demeanor is perfect for him to run against Lex for major. I definitely see where the creators and writers are going with this and I think it only brings more interesting dynamics to the show!

Where are they going with it?

Protecting Clark's secret has always been paramount with Jonathan so running for office, even state senator is OOC.

Next, maybe to finance the family farm and Pa Kent's campaign, they'll have Clark becoming a famous underwear model. Then Clark can be in the public eye too.

Um. These are all good points. Except that the WB description, for this season, when it talked about Jonathan running for political office, had this to say

" With Clark in college now, Jonathan and Martha are able to finally pursue their own lives. While Martha continues to run the Talon, Jonathan gets a visit from an old friend (Tom Wopat, The Dukes of Hazzard) who convinces him to run for mayor against Lex. An enthusiastic Lois Lane (Erica Durance) jumps on the bandwagon and immediately takes over as Jonathan's campaign manager. On board to save his town from the Luthors, Jonathan also knows this sudden spotlight could be dangerous to Clark, as his past will become public record. "

So, everyones problem with the whole "It's OOC for JK" is mute. Because the idea that it's going to be a danger to Clark is part of the storyline itself. Though they changed it from Mayor to Senator. So, no it's not OOC, it's very much IC. They're going to bring this point up on the show, and it's probably going to be the big problem Jonathan faces morally as he runs. And IMO will be what causes him to drop out of the race.

Also, it's not unrealistic for Jonathan to run, even in the real world, there are several states that have senators who have nothing but a high school education. They just have strong ties in their districts, and pull with the local unions (like Jonathan).

'The Dukes of Hazzard) who convinces him to run for mayor against Lex. '

Mayor or senator ? Mayor would be more believable.

it does seem strange out of character and a bit unbelievable to be honest
now
this would have been the perfect time to use mayor Tate!!!

he was wasted in "relic"

Although I like the storyline since it'll create a greater division between the Kent and Luthors, I agree it is OOC for JK to put his family under a microscope even with reservations.

smoky

Thats a good point about being under the microscope & Clark's illegal adoption. That is the only reason I think its OOC. Jonathon (even though he, Martha & Clark ALL LIE about Clark & the adoption) pretty much demands everyone else be honest. With the exception of Clark, he does have high standards that he lives by.

JK running for Mayor would have actually been quite amusing. He's the perfect guy to be mayor of such a smalltown. but JK running for Senator is just plain crazy and imo a bad storyline.

Do you guys understand that state senator means representing his section of Kansas in Topeka, and not representing Kansas in Washington?

They are two different leagues entirely.

for one, Lex would never run for "state senator", he'd go head first into big politics.

Hate to tell you Kal's Girl but he is just running for state senator. Senator Jennings was one a first name basis with the Governor, not the President. The way Clark said that line too ment it was supposed to be an impressive feat, which it would be for a state senator but not for a US senator.

jimmyolsenblues

But Lionel still has proof that Clark's adoption is illegal, even with Clark over 18, you can say oh that is acient news, but any spotlight on the Ken'ts will make Jonathan say, "Hey, is this good for my family".

kaatiedid

I really think you guys are putting too much clout into how big a state senator is politically. Think for a second the amount of attention is devoted to local senate races on the news. Like I said before, unless they are doing something scandalous, the news has little coverage of state senators.

This post is priceless!!

It does seem strange to me that JK will be running for senator-even if it is on the state level. Have to admit, it will be interesting to see how this is played out. Particularly considering that JK is leading the pole in the Spoilers section on who will die in the 100th episode!

I'm watching:lol:

I don't think JK will die in episode 100 but I do think that it's a dumb idea for him to run. I look at JK as a senseable man. What, all of a sudden he's gone stupid?
Doesn't he think of his wife and son how and being in the public eye will affect them.
