I agree, this is my favorite episode this season so far. It just seemed more Clark Kent/Superman-esque (investigation, journalism, a great action sequence with superfeats, and nice touching humanity stories for the characters and more character development rather than a soap opera). No lame FOTW, or vampires, or witches. Everyone had a good scene.

Someone said it above: "invigorating." I felt continuity, instead of being bounced to pointless scenes for the sake of getting every character in the episode. And I'm not really a Lana-hater, but I didn't even notice her absence, until afterwards when I considered that those panicky, angsty, semi-desperate eyes were missing. Oh well. Darn.

I actually have been enjoying the Clana this season, but I didn't really even notice her absence until the end of the ep. I guess because I knew she was out of town on an astronomy field trip.

Again - What's with her and astronomy?

Lana_Lang #1

Maybe she's in that class to be closer and have more things in common with Clark so she's taking astronomy cause Clark loves that kinda stuff.

Also for you Lana fanatics Kristin was in some part mentioned:

Melissa "I'm at York and EDGEMONT"

- Edgemont was/is (I'm not sure) Kristin Kreuk's other show she works on.

What is this movie Kristin's in, I haven't sure anything about that?

I can't help but think that, having witnessed a spacecraft -- complete with two havoc-wreaking aliens -- crashland, it would be quite natural for Lana to develop an interest in astronomy.

I think her sudden interest in astronomny is the result of seeing the spaceship and dealing with its occupants. Maybe she'll stick with this interest for a change.

KK was filming "Partition" during this episode. She went to India to finish the movie.

That's the only reason she wasn't in it. I doubt it will happen again.

Well, Lana may be MIA in one episode... Lois on the other hand shows up for only 13 and mostly filler ones. WOW! Gotta love her role... :rotfl:

It's really sad coz sometimes, Lois is just there with no purpose whatsoever

If she hadn't been busy doing that film (and assuming that's the reason she wasn't in the episode), perhaps we should speculate on how they might have managed to fit her in? I really can't think of a good scenario, except her finding out that Clark was at a strip club and being angry. I don't know! Any suggestions?

I like Lana and did not miss her in this episode, as she did not have a point in it. I feel the same way regardless of the character if they have no point in the episode. Case in point: Lionel is arguably my favourite character, was not in the episode and I did not miss him.

The only character that I think improves an episode by being absent is Lois.

It was cool not seeing her, but I find that I'm liking Lana more this season. Last season the writers tried their best to make me dislike her forever.

I realized this after watching Exposed: I can't stand Clana, but this season there's nothing wrong with Lana.
Except the vampire thing.

I can't wait until the Lex/Lana dynamic that I heard about starts. Once the Clana break up happens, it gives her a reason to still be on the show.

Something like that, maybe. I know that, as a chick, I'm bothered by her general lameness. She seems to overdramatize and make everything an issue. Scenes with Lana automatically make me brace myself for major angst. Sometimes it's that I can't ever see her as having a cheerful side. One of the few times I actually enjoyed her character was when Clark and her were with Lois and Aquaman (and Chloe, too, I think?) eating/getting something to drink. She was carefree, and that seems to be something that always escapes her for 99% of the episodes. I understand that she's had major hardships, and has horrible things weighing on her mind (GT, for example), but at the same time I wish that she could flash a smile that didn't say "yeah, I'm sort of happy, but behind this grin is PAIN." I don't know. That's just the vibe I get, and it bothers me, because no one walks around like that unless he or she is suffering from major depression.

The high-school-ish thing . . . eh, maybe that, too. I have a hard time accepting the Clana - even though I know that Clark is entranced by her, and that Lana loves him, it just seems overdone. I tried really hard to get into it, and I was actually rooting for Clana for the first few seasons - S4, though . . . something about the way she acted just turned me off, entirely. Maybe it's because I spent a few years in college and became jaded. Who knows?

The other thing is that Lana is always portrayed as this nearly perfect person. She's a "Mary Sue" (for all you fanficcers and writers out there), and that irritates me like nothing else. In the beginning, I got it, she was the popular cheerleader: believable. She's progressed, though, into this character who can do no wrong - she's always forgiven; everyone loves her; the men all want her; no one can hold a grudge. That, and Lana-fu. And her construction worker abilities. And artistic skills. And sudden interest in astronomy, a field dominated by left-brained individuals with higher math abilities. I just can't buy it anymore.

There's more, but it's hard for me to verbalize it all, and I don't want to write a dissertation. :o

Peace, though. All of the above is IMHO.

chlana_sandwich
11-05-2005, 05:41 AM
I was always a supporter of Clana because, clearly, they love each other. It's pretty obvious now that TPTB waited to get them together until *after* high school. We can't have minors sleeping together on prime time, after all.

But, since Lana up-and-left Clark to go to Metropolis without even mentioning to him that she was contemplating a move, I have to say she's far too self-absorbed to be with him. He deserves better. It's time to end the Clana.

Frankly, Chloe was always far better girlfriend material than Lana. It's a shame Clark didn't have the same feelings for Chloe as she had for him.

So true, nothing worse than a perfect "She walks into a room and men fall to her feet because she's so great" female character. I remember reading a book called "Quicksilver" by Neal Stephenson and was totally put off by a similar character called Eliza.

I hate this thread to turn in to Chloe VS Lana but, wouldn't you think that Lana would be a better friend/Girlfriend to Clark just like Chloe is if he just tells her the truth? for example (Clark and Alicia are so close together when they are a couple cause she know his secret).

Anyway my point being is that I just thing TPTB did the character wrong and did not give her a more solid character to fit in the show instead of being a love interest and eye candy. I also understand how the CLana relationship has been stretch long enough (I agree with everyone on that point) I say either Clark needs to tell her the truth or move on. The lying and weird relationship between the 2 is getting old since it's has been going on since the 1st season.

I don't know. I think that Chloe's always been close to Clark and admired and respected him in a way that Lana hasn't. I don't think that necessary would make her better girlfriend material, but I think that her relationship to Clark has always been deep, without her knowing his secret. I also think it's a huge part of the reason she had almost no trouble accepting it once she found out, and deciding to let him tell her on his own. That was the act of a true friend, of someone who loves him deeply.

I found it a nice change to not see her in the episode! And I really hope this Clana stuff is over soon so Lexana can begin! Not that I am a Lexana shipper, I found the thought of Lex and Lana together quite disturbing in fact, but at least it would be easier to watch than this Clana 24/7 love fest! I am a romantic as much as the next person, but their constant ´I love you, no I love you more, no I love you more´makes me wan´t to start drinking and smoking, which I would otherwise dismiss as an awful, disgusting habit!

Lana's okay as long as she doesn't get self righteous and snotty with anyone, feel forced into an episode, or is part of some ludicrous storyline (such as a Flying Vampire Squirrel in Black Leather). If they keep those things in check, then I tend to not dislike her so much. You see...to me.... she's always been part of the Big 3 in name only. So for her not to be in this episode was kind of refreshing........and kind of odd?.......not having to fast forward so much when re-watching that is.

And maybe that's another thing, for me - she has been self-righteous and kind of snotty in the past, and I haven't really seen any personality change from that. She isn't always self-righteous or snotty, but I keep waiting for that side of her character to leap out and hurt someone, and that sort of ruins a lot for me. Like I said, there are mostly other reasons for why Lana grates on me, but maybe the above is part of it, too. I'm always on edge. :\

I know that there is no way Lana could have fit into this story line, but the writers could have found a spot for Martha. I can't say that I hated this episode, but it wasn't great either. I mean, Lois is okay, but this is Smallville not Superman's Adventures. Therefore there is no need to focus on Lois centered episodes. I have to say as much as I find the Lois-and-Clark banter very entertaining, I like it when Lana's in the show, as long as she gets a good storyline. All that stuff you mentioned about Lana made SV good to watch when they were in high school, but I just hope now that they're in college, and after all that Lana's been through, they'd have a more mature storyline for her. So far, it's okay, but I hope it gets better.

In the back of my mind, I've always wondered about that. She's actually been effective in helping the progression of the other characters, just not her self. And yeah, the drama does add zest here and there....until it goes overboard and I'm forced to keep a barf bag by the sofa. So for that reason, this episode was kind of refreshing. Now, it's the writters task to smoothly integrate her into the next episode without it feeling forced......and having one episode without her, simply because she wasn't needed in this particular episode, is a well placed step in the right direction. So in the end, I guess that's why I said that "she's okay.....if kept in check".....because I really do believe that she's one of the Big 3 in name only.......now, if she didn't feel forced in so often.....I'd probably have less grounds to feel that way about it. Thats just my honest view on the matter.

She's not a regular, she's not in all the episodes, only like half! She's not crucial, because she's not needed until the Daily Planet and having her on the show is changing the mythology (which I don't mind, but every time she comes on I groan and change the channel)

Lana was out on a school field trip, if anyone listened. If Lana was in this episode she would have had a small role.
