I didn't find this thread anymore. Thought i should start it. What does everyone think. I can't wait to see Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort. I've heard good things about Ralph in particular and i hear the movie is amazing. I think i'm seeing the movie early, but i'm not sure. My dad got tickets to a screening but i'm not sure when it is.

So completely unaware that Ralph Fiennes would be Voldemart... that seems like a really good choice... because he can be evil and appealing. While I'm a fan of the books, I haven't been a huge fan of the movies... the first two were far two cardboard cut out. I enjoyed the complexity & darkness of the third. And the fourth is probaby one of my favs of the books... so I'm looking forward to the movie.

He strikes me as someone who would be very good for portraying voldemort. He said that once he knew the anger that voldemort felt was that of an unwanted child, he knew how to play him. People are saying he does an excellent job.
BTW, that pic of voldemort in the new trailer, that's him before he gets his body back right?

What else has Ralph been in?

Schindler's List and Red Dragon.
Well......um, the other two HP threads were closed due to um.....things :(.
That is CGI Voldemort in the trailer as far as I can tell. Don't know when it is. I just know the Death Eaters look wicked scary.

There's a sound bite of ralph fiennes speaking as voldemort from the first scene in the movie(won't spoil it if u haven't read the book) and he sounds like a snake. Bad IMO, hope he changes his voice in the end of the movie.

Which fits since he is the heir of Slytherin. I'm not spoiling for those who didn't read the book since it is in HP2.

If you read the books, you'd know why he sounds like a snake.
Cant wait to see a clip of him, they've really been covering it up.
He was also in The Constant Gardener

I've read em all. Just thought he'd sound like a low, menacing, chilling voice. I'm sure they'll make him awesome in the movie.

The Half Blood Prince definitely elaborates what Chamber of Secrets have touched on. I mean in CoS they commented that the Slytherin is a partletouge, and we saw Tom Riddle in the movie do it. Without the books the general audience knows.

I agree him being not coperal(sp?) definitely alters the tone on his voice. Still what a great tie in to his Slytherin hertiage and Parseltongue.
I love Tom Riddle/Voldemort :D.

Next week there is going to be a lot of promotion of the film. The Today Show has the HP Trio all week on taped interviews, and Daniel is going to be on TRL again next week. In PoA promotion Daniel and Emma looked so cute together :). Can't wait for this movie to come in a couple of weeks. I just hope the Gryffindor shirts my dad pre-ordered will be in before the movie's release.

I think I'll wait to Thanksgiving weekend... less crowds and force the family to go.
But in honor of the film coming out I am rewatching all three movies.... which I don't think I've ever done.
I forgot to tell you guys that Miriam Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is my cousin. I got to see her awhile back when I was in the UK and we had a fun chat about Harry Potter.

Thats cool Yellow-is that the only film shes in?I read about the niece of a production asst. who got to meet most of the stars-maybe your cousin can swing it for you!

Yeah... she's my cousin. I'm pretty sure she was only in the second movie. But if her character appears in another book/movie then she would be in it.
I saw her in Ireland at a family reunion and a had a long chat with her about HP & a bunch of her other movies. She was great!!!!
As for getting me to meet everyone... well she is a rather distant cousin and I really don't talk to her often. So I wouldn't even ask that favor. But it was really cool just seeing her & talking to her.

Thats cool Yellow-Im sure ppl associated with HP must always get asked by friends/relatives to meet the cast or go to the set.The story I read about the niece is pretty good-she was in a NY hotel where the cast was staying for the POA premiere-when Emma just walked by with her guardian-the niece went to meet her and was jumping up and down she was so excited and trying to talk to her too-lol-I can just imagine that! She later met Dan-Tom Felton-and others.

Hmm..she was only in CoS but in HBP she might show up since Herbology is Neville's speciality. I would love to see your cousin again. She was great, and one of the many reasons I loved the movie. Like how she told the boys just to leave Neville where he is after he fainted .

Yeah... I loved her in many films before I even realized she was my cousin... very funny. I haven't talked to her in a long time... but I got the impression that she would be in more than one film. I guess it all depends on length of the movie and budget constraints.
I love your new AVI BTW... is that the one that Buzz worked on for you????

She was only in Balto for a little bit, but at the end of it when she said "Thank you Balto I would be lost without you". Let me tell ya my sisters were like this  :D. They loved that scene.
The length of the movie seems like the to be the real big contraint now.

Her character appears in the books, however briefly, but as of yet she has only been in the second movie. I haven't heard if she'll be in any future movies. But my guess is that they will bring back a lot of the regular professors towards the end. And as Summers said, herbology is Neville's favorite subject, so it is very possible she would be back for the fifth movie. As far as I know she isn't in the new one coming out.

I saw some of the webcast of the London premiere today-it was really good. They had a walkway that was lit green for the stars to enter-a fire breathing dragon in a cage-giant HP posters.I saw Dan,Emma,Rupert,Robbie,Oliver and James Phelps,Devon Murray and the guy who plays Krum.It was pouring rain and everyone was escorted with umbrellas.I heard it rains like half the time in england anyway-but the crowd was still the biggest ever for a premiere.

I watched it too. So incredible. I was getting goosebumps with the music, and visuals. Ah, man Andy (Cedric) looks cuter in his interviews :D. I can't wait for this movie. This first look made my mom want to see it more. I like that they kept Voldemort's coperal face still not shown. You just see his hand and body :).
I can't wait to get over with GoF because OoTP is next which IMO is the best book ever. So much stuff is in the book, and it balances character development and action very well. So much is involved that they asked JKR to be more involved in that film. She hasn't been this much involved since SS.

I've not liked any of the Potter flicks, despite being a MASSIVE fan of the books (and at 27 that's a lot to admit ;)).
They've always been a bit too childish and not had enough depth.
Philosopher's Stone was just a pure kiddies film. Chamber of Secrets did 'grow up' a little but still wasn't that good. PoA took too much of the book out and Cuaron seemed to want to take the series in a direction away from the books - it lost the impact his parents have on Harry, which is far too important.
Saw the trailer for GoF again last night, and yes it does look a bit older but still, I thought that about PoA.
But I'll still go, I'm a loyal Potter fan. If I can enjoy it, I will do. But I'm not going in with high expectations.
Summers
11-16-2005, 08:53 AM
Cuaron I despised. He didn't even read nor did he want to. I saw that the moment I saw the trailer of PoA. At least we know the director of GoF read the book. The marketing this time around has been that the HP series is far darker than the general audience realized, and lot little kids in SS. Kidde like in SS is well that's what it was like to an extent lol.
I'm 25 years old, and my dad is 52. Both HP fans :D.

The top headline on Yahoo news 'Is the new Harry too scary for kids'?POA was dark with the dementors-but This is supposed to be far darker as said above. The reviewer said the maze was the scariest part.I wonder-more then the dragon?or Lord Voldemort?
Anyone guess how much it will make this weekend?
Just off the cuff-Ill say 72 million.
Summers
11-17-2005, 04:38 PM
Well, we been saying that each book it gets darker and darker . CoS and onward it's gradually gets far darker than you realize :).
Well Lord Voldemort comes alive in the maze task it leads right to him, and there are other things in the maze.. The dragon help set the tone on how dangerous it is, but it more action orientated. The maze goes to another level. You'll see what I mean.
I don't make predictions on how much a movie makes.

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone get the feeling that the movie hasn't gotten as much hype as you or I suspected? I don't know, to me, it just seems like the 6th Book has gotten pub than the 4th movie.

India's Rediff notes that the film is not for Muggles; the reviewer brought three people to the screening who hadn't read the books or, it seems, seen the first three films. During the graveyard scene, "The muggles near me were wondering what on earth was happenning. During the scene were Voldemort touches Harry (remember he could not do so without enduring pain in the previous books, thanks to the magical properties of his mother's love?), he says, 'Now, I can touch you!' The muggle on my left smirks and quips: 'What's so great about it? He is tied to a pole!' Vaild point, mate, but you have to read the books to understand the nuances of the script.
lol. I gotta wait till sunday to c it :(
My play opens tonight :)

It was pretty darn good :)
My only complaints are that some scenes felt rushed and the abscense of others.

Yeah i watched it last night. It was really great but some of the scenes were too short and some went on too long. They could have cut some of the long scenes and add in some more from the book.
It was still the best HP film so far :D

The movie was pretty good, I dont know if it actually was better than the third, but obviosly was bigger, more epic and funnier than the previous 3. The movie had a great mood because even do it was a dark movie, the darkest yet, the comedy kept it grounded. The cast is getting better in their roles and now star to show some acting range, Daniel and Emma were particulary great in their roles, it will be interesting to see this two actors develop, they are very young and there is room to keep improving a lot, it will be really interesting to see this two actors in the sixth and seventh movie. I find particulary that this two actors have great chemestry on screen.

To be honest I thought it was the worst yet (sorry). Firstly for people who haven't read the book they would be soooooooooooooo confused because of all the things they left out. They also seemed to focus too much on small details. And left some important things out. The special effects for the Quidditch world cup and the dragon were really good. But Mad-Eye Moody's eye????? HA! I think they used something like a bigger version of one of those google eyes the elementary school kids use in art class. I also thought the seen where Harry was talking to Sirius inthe fire place was just corny. Voldemort could have been just a little bit more evil. And I didn't think he looked human enough. I mean I know he's supposed to look very... well you know. But he was just thins deformed thing after he was reborn. As for the acting I thought it was okay for the most part but I don't like the dumbledore from the thrid or fourth movie. In this one he seemed a little bit to shaken at parts. Well that's pretty much all I have to say for now.
Did anyone else think the death eaters looked like the Klu Klux Klan besides being dressed in black?

Yeah, It did pretty well. I don't know what to expect from the box office. I read that the movie is expected to break the Spider man 2 opening weekend record of 114 millions in the first weekend. Going over charts Spider man 2 made 42 millions on the first day, so Harry Potter is close it will depend on the next 2 days.

Saw it tonight...AWESOME...much better than the third movie. I've read the 6th book, but even then, I am convinced that SOMEHOW Hermione and Harry will end up together. I said this earlier in the year, those two understand each other, and have the chemistry that Ron and Hermione don't have.

Summers' HP4 Review
For warning it is spoilerish, and this is coming from the perspective who read the book. So it does have expectations.
Plot
-I liked that they basically tried to keep to the main storylines, and didn't go off tangent with other things that were not important.
-They rushed things with no clear explaination to the order of events on some occassions. My brother and his wife were like WTH in some parts.
-The did the Tri-Wizard Tournment excellent, and I what I envisioned even though some things were changed. For movie purposes it is understandable, and I can see why they did.
-The Yule Ball was beautifully shot, and loved the remake Wizard style of "Dancing With Myself" by Billy Idol .
-I loved that they acted more like school children by the teasing, and rudeness that does happen. Very realistic.
-seeing Lily Potter, James Potter, and Cedric talking to Harry even though they are dead. I loved when we heard Potter's voice, and I just cried when Lily said "Let Go Sweetheart" :( :). Even in death they are still protecting their son, and I love it :D.
Characters
-Cedric was terrifically done, and how I envisioned. I thought the scene where Harry brings back his dead body everyone is cheering, and it takes a while for everyone to realize he died :(. Oh, that was beautifully done and I cried myself and at his euglogy. Robert looked such the hottie at the Yule Ball, and just in the film in general.
-Mad-Eye Moody aka Rooster Cogburn(John Wayne) from True Grit is what he reminded me off. He was excellent in the film even if he looked not how I envisioned. His lesson on the Unforgivable Curses one of my favorite scenes, and was terrifically done. He really captured the audiences attention. It was a scary scene, but needed to show the intensity of the curses.
-Neville and Ginny were far more shown this time, and the readers all know why ;). Neville was terrific, and him and Ginny looked so cute at the Yule Ball :D.
-The Trio: Ron was poorly writtened in this film. They did not explain why he was jealous over Harry or Hermoine. I love the make-up scene with Harry/Ron , but they needed one with Ron/Hermione for the general audience. Harry was done well, and Hermoine too. I love the last shot of the Trio in the hallway :D. Reminded me of HBP ending lol.
-Dumbledore was off at times I thought, but had great parts in it such as the end with the euglogy, and comforting Harry out of the maze and in his room.
-Snape was great, and I know they know Snape's ending in the whole series. Alan Rickman knows how Snape ends in this series, and I noticed how they kept him on the fence of good and evil. Nice job, and he was so funny beating the heck out of Ron and Harry's head in the classroom . They so wouldn't be allowed in the U.S. lol.
-Voldemort could have been a little scarier, but in due to time he will be. I loved how they made him equal on his powers with Harry. It showed how one is not better than the other. At first Voldemort would win, and then Harry would equal it out which frigthened Volemort.
-The Twins!!! They were terrific, and man they got cut. I'm so glad they were in it more. Plus ties into OoTP :D.
Favorite Quotes
Dumbledore: Dark and difficult times lie ahead, Harry. Soon we must all face the choice between what is right... and what is easy.
Hermione: Everything is going to change now, isn't it?
Mad-Eye Moody: Avada Kedavra! The killing curse. Only one person is known to have survived it, and he's sitting in this room.
Hermione: I'm scared for you.
Malfoy: Why so tense, Potter? My father and I have a bet, you see. I don't think you're going to last ten minutes in this tournament. He disagrees. He thinks you won't last five...
Harry : I don't give a *damn* what your father thinks, Malfoy! He's vile and cruel and you're pathetic. :D
McGonagall: Professor Moody! What are you doing?
'Mad-Eye' Moody: Teaching.
McGonagall: Is - is that a student?
'Mad-Eye' Moody: Technically it's a ferret.
Voldemort: My wand, Wormtail.
Harry: Why do they travel in packs?
McGonagall: Now, Mr. Weasley , put your right hand on my waist.
Ron : Where?
Neville: I KILLED HARRY POTTER!!
Harry: I brought him back. I brought him back(crying over Cedric's body)
Dumbledore: Your home. You and Cedric are home(cradling harry's head)
The book basically paraphased this from book in parts at the end. Either way is fine, but this is the book's quote. I leave it off with this in respect to Cedric :(. As Dumbledore said in the movie let's not put his death in vain(I liked how they put it in the movie as well by adding vain).
Dumbledore: Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.

The third fastest movie to reach the 100 millions ever and the second opening weekend of the year, just topped by 108 millions of Star Wars.

I think Ootp should be spilt up into two films, they film them back-to-back (Like the matrix sequels) then release one about 3 months before the final book comes out and then one about a month -3 months later, that way you get the potter mania for about 4-6 months and you gt a lot more film :D

I thought Ron was horribley written in this film. They didn't explain his reasons for being pissing with Harry, but the closure of that conflict was settled great and with humor. With Hermione was fouled up with no closure. Hearing the audience who didn't read the book was so confused by Ron's actions. They cut out the exposition of Ron.
We knew Draco was going to limited, and everyone else due to time contraints. They were debating to put this film into two movies actually. They forewarned the book audience expect downsizing. I just didn't expect the downsize of Ron's exposition.

I think that would be burn out for many people. You don't want to burn out the general audience, and that would be total burn out since there are seven books. Some people were burn out with just book 6 marketing. The book marketing is in it as well.

Yeah but what was he in? 3 scenes? I know they were and I wish they had. Yeah downsizing is one thing but what they did with this movie was awful seeing as it's meant to be a book tie-in that isn't really like the book at all. It's like taking GOF and cutting it in half.

He was in the World Quittach Cup going to his seat. I remember that one because Tom looked really good in an all black suit :D. The Ferret scene, and Moody's first class. That's all I remember. I did see him at the Yule Ball, and in dinner scenes as an extra.
It was cutting in half, but I did like they tried to follow the book as possible. I knew GoF and onward the directors from now on would be time contraint because of so much going on. I felt her character was too...whiny for me, like she always had a problem with someone else.
The actors also have to realize that this is one of those childhood actor type dilemma. If they sign on for the 6th installment, would they be known as the "actor or actress who was in those Harry Potter movies." These kids need more work outside of these movies I think.

There are seven books of Narnia ;). It is going to depend on the revenue the movie makes in the theatres and dvd sales. They already finished the second movie script, and it is excellent buzz. Narnia is a little bit more complex than HP on business and what is shown . I love the stories, and they are far shorter than HP though. So they won't have that much on time contraint if they know what they are doing that is. Which they won't since Walden Media is doing it besides Disney.

The actors also have to realize that this is one of those childhood actor type dilemma. If they sign on for the 6th installment, would they be known as the "actor or actress who was in those Harry Potter movies." These kids need more work outside of these movies I think.
See I think Hermione in the first few books is just a whiny brat now she is beginning to change and become a great character :D
Yeah, they don't want to get type-cast but Daniel has been in other movies and so has Rupert.

PoA I liked, but OoTP was just so epic to me on so many levels.
I know Dan wants to stay.
To tell the truth I don't really remeber any of the books except 6. The only real parts of OoTP I remeber are Them going though the ministry fighting then Sirious JIC... dies
Maybe thats why I didn't enjoy it that much, I don't enjoy epics.
Good!
Oh okay, I've never seen anything about Narnia, I saw the tailer for it at GOF and it reminded me of a "kiddy" LOTR. Shorter books is better, means the movies will be truer to the books

I know Daniels has a movie coming out in 06 called December Boys if I'm not mistaken.
Emma's, all of her movies have been HP but then again, she's what...15?
As for Hermione, I thought she had spunk in the first two movies and in the third one, she became more independent. Here, I dunno...it seemed like Whinefest 2005.

What!? Emma not better than Daniel?! Pssh... soo not true! Did you see her acting at the Yule Bule? Better than Dan's & Rup's acting combined! (It also helped she was super fit! :D)
wasn't he at the GOF events too? I think I remeber seeing him.
Yeah they TRIED. Yeah. Which film did Newell direct? I think they get worse as they go on which would make sense imo seeing as each book is bigger than the other.
Narnia is a series, and they aren't doing it for the allegory either. The allegory is just a subtext is all everything else is all fantasy. I love Narnia :D.
I think all of them were off in some scenes now and then. Dan was kinda off when he said at the end "Yes" that was kinda bad. His best scene to me was his crying over Cedric :(. Emma's I thought was bad was the very beginning lol. Rupert just badly written, but he did is typical Ron mode okay.
Newell did GoF ;). Curon did PoA. As long as the concentrate on the main arcs, and do better expositions they should be fine. They just need to work on those blasted expositions.

Yeah what you say about the first 3 movies is true but if you look at herminoe's POV in GOF don't you think she has every right to whine? Ron only asks her as a last resort to the yule ball and Harry is a little unapprecitative to her when she helps him in the GOF challenges.

Yeah but isn't that true to every movie at some point? There's always weak scenes in everythnig it can't be good all the time, and yes I agree Dan was off when he replied "Yes" to Herminoe's "It's all going to change now, isn't it?"
Oh okay. I didn't think Newell had read the book. Yeah I think if they do that too it will be fine but there may already be hints in the first 5 books that will be important to the 7th book that they didn't know about and have cut :\.
Yeah it's not that fair on them really.

I love Hermione. I go off and on Ron. I loved him all the way through except book 4 and 6. I can't stand him.
You mean you don't even remember the chapter of the young Maruders, Lily Evans, and Snape or Dumbledore's Army. I love it!!!
You don't enjoy epics? I called it epic because so much stuff happens emotionally, mentally, and physically to these characters and it flowed. I loved it to death. I can't get enough. Some books were just good foundations which the first three were.
It will be truer, but some things I seen alreadly changed. One change is because of modernize of women's roles which I loved. But it is in NO WAY a kiddie version. Believe it is not. There is true darkness and scary things in these books, and the first one shows parts of it. That is like typecasting HP is just kiddy series .

I love Hermione NOW but back in books 1 & 2 I hated her! Partly because I couldn't say her name . I've always liked Ron more than Harry for some reason he's like the unsung hero imo.
No I'd forgotten that too , I remeber something vagely about the DATDA teacher in 2 is in it.
Well if we talk epics, lets talk about a few BIG movies, Gladiator - Hated it, King Arthur - Hated it, LOTR - Eh it had it's moments but I wouldn't say it's THAt great and I can't read the books.
Okay. Oh Okay, I might go see it now then if it's dark, I was going to wait until it was on DVD. I will NEVER call HP a Kids series! The Books prove that!

SS was her first role ever . She is basically training on these movies.
They were apprecative in CoS, but honestly they go off and on with it. I would be pissed if I was a last choice for a ball. No girl wants to be last choice :(.
Well, of course. I just be a medium between you two guys. There were good scenes and bad ones. Acting is a constant learning process. Honestly, I would have done the whole ending scene far differently.
Newell and Columbus read the book, but Curon didn't and he had no intention to either. That's why I think Alan knows his ending of Snape already. JKR must've have released some things to them already. Before HBP was released a lot of the movie was done. Noticed:
-they put Snape on the fence more in this.
-Ginny was shown more
-Neville (the boy who could've been the chosen one) and his herbology which is directly to book 6. The Longbottoms were referenced in the flashback of this movie.
I'm already seeing the links now from this one.
Studios' don't care. They want money. they treated Shirley Temple like crap.

DADA was technically Harry since Umbridge went all Nazi Germany on Hogwarts. Which will be interesting to see :).

# Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) (pre-production) .... Hermione Granger
# Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) .... Hermione Granger
# Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) .... Hermione Granger
# Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) .... Hermione Granger
# Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) .... Hermione Granger
THATS all shes done!!!!

Yes good point there, she must've. Might I add I liked Ginny being in the movie more but I didn't like how little The Wesley's father was in it. Mark Williams is one of my favourite british actors and his character is too small for him imo.
Yeah.

Emma is usually on vacation during the hiatuses I think.
The way Harry did it is the best way. Girls can tell if your nervous, so if they girls are nice about it you'll know if the girl nice person :). Like Cho was in the film.
The ending scene I would have it not as happy ending because for me as a reader I felt anxious knowing Voldemort is alive, sad for Cedric's death, and to have the Trio far more together. I would definitely not had the camera focusing on the other two schools, but turn around focus on the Trio looking onward and have Harry say "this is only the beginning" with a stotic face.
I loved that Ginny was in it more, and we know why. She looks so pretty now. I love the shot with her and Neville dancing :D, or teasing Ron :). Molly Weasley was not even in it. Downsized due to time.
I'm saying it will, but Ron just...ugh i want to stake him lol.

Oh, yea it was sad. It was nice for her say "I am really sorry" the second time with far more meaning. It also helped the audience to grasp her some.
It does sound better? :D whoa :). It does. I thought they would do that since PoA film was on a happy note, but GoF on have always had a darker undertone to it. It was just far to happy for me, and having the last frame on the other schools was awkward.
I mean she was pretty back then, but you can see her maturing into a young woman :). Nope. Don't know it, but she has been a few things here in the U.S. Mrs. Weasley is my mom's favorite character because she can relate .

As long as it's not shipperness. I thought she was off in HBP shippnerness.
In the film it did when Harry got his Firebolt from Sirius at the end. He was all smile :D.
Ginny is going to be seen a lot more from now. Hmm...now there will be more Dean in OoTP lol.
How do we know? He quickly easily betrayed Harry in GoF, and don't forget Ron goes evil theory. His insecurities really control his actions once again in HBP. has some Peter Petgriew traits sometimes Voldemort can exploit and use. Dumbledore's Army is the second generation that has a lot in common with the first generation. Ron's arc is not done yet. So I'm 50-50 on him.

Yeah it was a little rushed, I haven't actually finished the book yet lol. I liked the scenes of harry & ginny in COS though, but in HBP it didn't seem right, Harry sees Ginny with someone else and it makes his passion leap to life? WTF? For all he knows he could have read his emotions wrong and it was a big brother complex type thing that he had for her, IMO that would make more sense with him & ron being more like brothers, so to me at least it would make more sense for harry and ginny to jsut be like brother & sister.

You haven't finished the book yet . HBP was hard for me to get into. The Riddle parts are only my favorite scenes except for the ones with Dumbledore/Harry.

Nope  One more chapter! I found it hard to get into too, I was trying to beat my brother to finishing it and as soon as I knew he'd beaten me I didn't pick the book up for two weeks! I don't really have any favourite scenes in it lol.

you've probably already discussed this (I'm a little late to the thread), but the death eaters hats were hilarious. They're meant to be scary but I was trying to resist laughing out loud!
I thought the Death Eater outfit was very Ku-Klux-Klan. Which, I suppose is the intention with them trying to do to muggles/half-bloods what the Klan try to do to our coloured friends.

The Riddle pensive scenes, and Dumbledore/Harry is what I can't wait to see and the only to me that was worthwhile about the book.
It will be neat to see the handsome Riddle turn into the ugly Voldemort.

eh, I suppose. But you were way open mind about it :D.
I talking about Narnia and HP with a friend of mine the other day, and we basically concluded that. These books are sometimes writtened in younger reading level. HP is definitely higher reading level wise than Narnia. Narnia is more young adult, but it's the themes these two series have that make it very adult, realistic metaphorically, and dark.

I really enjoyed the movie, although I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say that it was the best. First, I have a very definate position about turning a book into a movie. I believe strongly that a screenplay should stay true to the book, but it needs to find its own focus. More importantly a director needs to create a vision for the movie. I HATE when movies are the exact replica of a book with no creative idea or difference. As a result, I am not the biggest fan of the first two movies... I found them flat and without any vision, other than the one found in the book.
I praise this movie for definately having it's own unique vision... however, I question it's fluidity in the Harry Potter world, especially in the line of movies that have come before it. I think the director did wonderfully at creating a beautifully dark & haunting landscape, creating a far more terrifying cinematic flow, and creating a more realistic version of special effect magic.
Many of the times I liked the way they parred down the story, although I must be honest, there are such huge gaps between each of the movies, and each of the books, that I do forget a lot of what happened.
I think where the film messed up was that it was inconsitent or completely ignorant of characterization for most of its characters. The movie did everything in its power to make the audience feel Harry's isolation... but almost to the point of sacrificing all characterization of the other major characters. There was little to no characterization or interaction with Snape, Draco, or Hagrid. Dumbledore was terribly inconsistent in his treatment of Harry and in his role as the stable wise character, which may have worked if he was redeemed at the end... but he really wasn't. Ron was turned into a snarky, snotty brat that just picked fights with all of his friends and never really made up with them. Actually, I didn't mind his interactions with Harry so much, but when did he become nasty & cruel to Hermione. I know that he was like that to an extent in the book, but they actually showed him getting jealous, whereas in the movie he just seemed to make the statements for no reason or very abruptly, and then there was no make-up scene. As for Hermione, I liked her many times, but I must agree with you that as a whole she was rather whiney in this film and not the usual bright and independent Hermione we all love. Once again, I liked her most with Harry, but as soon as you put her with Ron things were just bad. It's almost as if the director focused so badly on the scarry parts that he neglected any characterization or plot development, allowing the movie to turn into a soap opera.
However, Harry's portrayal was exceptionally good. I was glad to see him trying to be normal, not wanting the glory, but also trying to be strong & independent. And Daniel handled the self-deprication and "I can't do it" attitude without becoming whiney or obnoxious.
Additionally, I'm one of the few people that loved the Voldemort portrayal. I thought they did a wonderful job with him. He was terrifying, but at the same time he was so human, making him even more frightening. I also liked that they continued to play on the similarities between Harry & Riddle, even though it was very subverted.
Like Summers, I thought the ending was poorly done. It was completely anti-climatic. I don't understand the director's vision in ending the entire movie watching the other schools leave... who the hell cares???? They are not the foucs of the over arching story. They aren't even the focus of this movie/book. The movie should have ended with the trio or with Harry alone. And I sort of agree that the ending should have been dark... The current ending had no real mood to it. It wasn't really celebratory, nor was it mournful or dark... it just wasn't a good ending... especially after such a powerful scene of Harry returning with Cedric's dead body.
Based on everything I just said... you'd think I hated it... which isn't true. I really like the movie. But I just found a lot more flaws then I hoped for, especially when everyone billed this as the best HP movie of them all.
Summers
11-25-2005, 04:53 PM
I agree with you YQ on many things. The ending still don't like at all, and enjoyed Voldemort very well.
I agree it is not the best HP movie of them all. We all have personal perferences, but the characterization of Ron was just plain annoying. At times it was rushed. I was entertained, and I liked more than PoA. CoS is still my all time favorite film, but like I said all personal perference.

I was wondering what u HP fans who have read the book think of this review I came across of GOF;
'Here’s the wickedly ironic dark secret of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: It actually works better as a movie if you HAVEN’T read the book on which it’s based. As a film it’s grand entertainment, with one wild set piece after another trying to top the last. Readers have long wondered how the enormous tome, with its hordes of subplots struggling for space, would fit into a single movie, and the answer is surprisingly simple: Cut EVERYTHING that doesn’t tie into the central plot.
It boils down to three things: Harry Potter. Mysterious new teacher. Three tasks of the Triwizard Tournament. Everything else? GONE. No more Hermione founding an elf-rights movement, no more Dobby, no Dursleys and precious little of teen-agers making goo-goo eyes at each other. And the cuts are more skillfully executed, unlike the previous film, Prisoner of Azkaban, in which there are major pieces of absolutely essential information cut from the narrative, any of which could have easily been handled in three lines of dialogue.'

Hmm..to me his vision was more Curon's vision from PoA, but he actually added things that were from the book. I didn't find Newell's GoF any different visually compared to Curon. The only true difference I saw that it was actually Newell directing is the adding of actual school life inside the dialogue. That was well done, and there was other scenes I love he directed.
The more I watch it the more I see how badly rushed it was. Dumbledore was, in fact, off in the movie. Dumbledore wouldn't act that way until the book 5/6. He did not act this way at all in book 4. The characterization was off on him terribly.
For me Chris is still my HP director, and Newell is my second favorite. Curon could just say boldface last.
For movies:
1) CoS
2) GoF (it was just too badly rushed in many parts)
3) SS
4) PoA (visually it was breathtaking)

I like the wardrobe in PoA. It made it more realistic, and personally that's how I thought they dressed up when they were going to Hogsmeade lol. Newell used similar wardrobe for GoF. It just seems only natural to me.
Visually Newell used PoA's visually. Curon just stinked at the exposition thanks to him not reading the book. People need those exposition scenes. Books like these it's just standard.

I just watched it for the third time in my third different theatre last night and it's still enjoyable.

I saw it a 2nd time last night and focused on the film making this time. I picked up on the symbolism and stuff too. It was pretty cool. And the scene when harry returns from the graveyard with Cedric's body was even better this time. My eyes glistened! I've only had my eyes glisten during Life is Beautiful! That about sealed my conclusion that this is one of the best movies ever.

IMO it's the best HP movie. Of course it misses many things from the book, but it was very well done anyway.
I almost cried in the scene when Harry returns with Cedric's body :(

I cried at that scene actually. To have the crowd cheer, and for them not to know Cedric was dead was tough. To see Harry very protective of his friend was tough to watch to see so much pain.
Now I have to comment just because a movie makes a person cry doesn't automatically mean it is the best movie of the year. That is all matter of perception of the audience viewer. What makes a movie, book, film great is the majority consenus of the viewers.

sry, i don't agree with that at all. the majority consensus could easily be wrong. Take the movie, Chicago. They loved it. I hated it. It's all personal opinion. And it takes a lot of good acting to get me to cry, so i knew it was good by that measure.

Frankly, I'm not. A majority concensus is just that. It's the majority opinion of that movie. What you have about Chicago is labeled a "minority" view that is all. The general audience loved Spiderman, but the comic book fanbase has been labeling that movie as a terrible comic book flick. Right or wrong is never the issue. It's all the matter of labeling a film by the majority concensus not matter of what is right or wrong. Opinions are never factual in the first place. They are mere statements of opinions.
It was good by your standard. Doesn't make it true for everyone else ;). It is one of the reasons why Oscars and Emmys are so debated because it deals with opinions vs. majority concensus.
