I know, i'm lame.
I only voted for South Pacific because I was in the musical in my freshman year at high school. It's the only musical I've seen.

Well, SP is an amazing show. I'm a junior and our school is doing little shop of horrors(ugh). I guess i shouldn't complain that much, i'm up for the lead. Good job on getting in a musical your freshman year! Northern Virginia high school theater is SO competitive.
Thanks. But it was that musical that made me realize that I have no acting talent! :(
I went on to audition for a play and a musical during my sophomore year and got some great parts, but in the end I realized acting isn't for me. I'd rather lounge around and watch other people act on TV!
Oh and hope you get the lead! Break a leg!

Can I say "none of the above"? I love the question but you haven't got any of my favs on the list.
My favs would include: Into the Woods, Once on this Island, Rent, Sunset Boulevard

Moulin Rouge isn't really a musical. No new songs, just a bunch of old ones.
yellowqueen22
11-03-2005, 03:36 PM
Actually... still would be classified as a musical... just like Mamma Mia, which is all old ABBA songs, or many musicals by Cole Porter & Irving Berlin, since they both recycled their songs over & over again.

Exactly. Moulin Rouge is classified as a musical.

I guess so. Are they lip synching in the movie? I don't like when actors lip synch.
Summers
11-03-2005, 04:27 PM
They are lip singing their actual voices is all. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGreggor sang in the studio. That's how musicals films are done now. It's a great story, and film.

So i got called bacl for the lead in little shop of horrors. And the cast list is up today. And i'm not on it. Not even chorus. I'm very confused.
There must be a mistake. If you got called back for the lead, you would have had to at least get chorus. Very strange. I'd talk to the director, if I were you. It's got be a mistake.

Well this year has been weird as far as our musical goes. We're doing little shop of horrors and i got called back for the plant, but today they posted the cast list and i wasn't even on it. He had this grand vision to have everyone in drama(200 kids!) be in the musical(even the ones who couldn't sing would lip sych) so at the beginning of the year he told us that we were all in it so i told all my relatives. But then he just kinda dropped that idea cause the other drama teacher(mean haggish lady) told him it was a bad idea. Don't know why that would make a difference being as he's the main, popular drama teacher who has lead people to national level acting. It doesn't bother me, except now i have to tell everyone that i'm not in the musical and that just crushes people you know.
yeah I know what you mean. That really sucks that your drama teacher dropped the idea just like that. In my old high school, the musicals were always the big ones with 150-200 people in them. They would have them in the spring. It was the fall play that was competitive so if you got a part in the fall play, then that meant you're really good. I feel bad, though that now you have to tell your relatives that you're not in it. I feel for you, man.

I've been acting for a long time now and all I have to say is this, doing dramas is so much harder than doing musicals.
You don't act AS well when your doing musicals as you do when your doing dramas.
And no I'm not basing this on BS, I'm basing this on my experience. I've been acting 10 years now. I'm only 19.
I've done so many plays and musicals I can't even remember some of them.
Directing a musical, now that's a different story.
I'm not sure about that. I have been in a number of drama plays and musicals myself and I think they are equally challenging in their own right. Drama plays call for different techniques than musicals. Based on my experience, I have had to apply different methods when acting in a play or musical. I used to act since elementary school all the way to high school. Now, I don't act anymore and have taken up a new hobby in writing. I think writing is fun and I have written a couple of plays before in high school and actually directed one. Directing is probably the hardest thing I have ever done.
Magus
11-05-2005, 09:56 PM
Writing is so hard. People will c a play and think the actors were great and that may be true, but great writing makes it all possible. I try writing every once in awhile but can't finish anything. I write researched essays on subjects for fun sometimes and people say they're well written, but i can't write anything too long.
Yeah, writing takes a lot of time and practice. I started in high school when I took a creative writing course and I just took off from there. I wrote some plays with other friends and for a theater class, we had to write, direct, and star in one. It was a great class and I had so much fun doing the work. I just contined writing from then on and decided to give up acting. I'm not planning on a career in writing, but it has been a great hobby of mine. Writing and directing are probably the most challenging things I have done in theater.

I voted for Phantom of the Opera. The only other one I've see is Guys and Dolls. I've heard music from The Producers, though, and it's brilliant. Very funny.
So is anyone going to see the theatrical version of Rent? I never saw the musical on Broadway, but I know the basic premise of it. The movie seems worth renting, but I don't know about going to the movie theater to see it. Is it worth it? What do you think?

I saw the set in may the day after they finished it in LA. It looks JUST like manhattan. Look out for names grafittied on the walls, that's their way of thanking set designers. My tour guide has his name graffitied on a wall. I also saw Ben Stiller in LA. Drama field trip.

1) I think anything in the theatre world is hard, whether it is writing, directing, tech, or acting. I've done many of the jobs including acting for over 8yrs, stage managing for over 5yrs and everything else randomly here and there. All of the job require hard work, dedication, and talent.
2) Rent is completely worth seeing... it has some really freaking amazing rock infused music and a wonderful plot & theme. Everything I've seen of the movie looks fab... and the majority of the cast in the movie is the orignal Broadway cast. I will definately make an effort to be seeing that one in the movie theatres. Of course musicals live on stage are always better.
3) TMLS you can vote for whatever you want. Although "Once More with Feeling" is not a full blown out musical, as it is missing many of the key features/elements of a musical, I say why the hell not... it's d**n good!!!!

Hey, I just noticed there isn't Les Miserables mentioned. I love that musical. Even better than Phantom of the Opera.
I saw Phantom of the opera and loved it. It was amazing. I also saw A Christmas Carol (the one with scrooge) at madison square garden. It was alright. I saw it a while ago when I was in middle school so it was about 8 years ago. I haven't seen it since. Another musical I saw was Bombay Dreams. It was pretty good although my parents forced me to see it. We saw it last Christmas so it is still pretty fresh in my head.

Sweeney Todd is the best musical ever written IMHO. Both in terms of plot and composition.
In that poll, I voted for Guys and Dolls, because it's one of my favorites too, and Frank Loesser was a brilliant, brilliant songwriter.
I usually don't like musicals but The phantom of the opera was entertaining.
Voted South Pacific as it's the only one I've seen of those ( well, not exactly seen more "been in at school ;) )
I'd have voted for Chicago myself...
