View Full Version : K-Site's 'Reading' Rainbow
While I generally read a lot, I don't take enjoyment in reading novels. It's a bit too passive of an experience. However, I was an avid reader as a teen, which probably explains why I don't take delight in it now. That tidbit is also the reason why I went from English to Journalism major, as I much more enjoy the creation rather than the observation. Although there are some bits of literature I do still enjoy, like those by Fyodor Dostoevsky, William Faulkner, Friedrich Nietzsche, Leo Tolstoy, and my beloved, William Shakespeare.

I like to read about biology and psychology stuff. My favorites involve genetics in biology and I like to read about different theories in psychology. I enjoy reading about Freud. He's one messed up guy, but he's pretty entertaining. I also like to read comic books. Superman and some Batman mostly with a hint of Spiderman!

I read all the time. I have read since I was in like 5th grade. I was always a trouble maker in school, so what I started doing was reading. It kept me leveled and raised my grades.
Im now on the road to being an English teacher. :D

I barely read anything for a span of a few years until the last few months, in which time I've read the Harry Potter books, Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code and another book that I can't remember.
I just finished The Da Vinci Code today and I'll probably look to read either a Shakespeare play or a biography of a historical figure.

I read a lot, I go through fases where I read like crazy then don't read a thing for months. I'm into fastany, I read all 3 Lord of the Rings books in grade 8 and 9 before the moives came out, which suprises most people; I don't know why. Some of my favorite writter (off the top of my head) are Terry Brooks, Daivd Eddings, JRR Tolkien, and Terry Pratchett. I aslo read any SV books and batman comics like Batman:The dark knight strikes again
I useally read the same book more then once, my short term memory is not good so it take a while to push things into my long term memeory so I usally read things over and over till I get it. Plus I've got learning problems and I'm always afraid I'll mess something important or wouldn't understand things right. Like I'd read one chapter twice before going on to the next chapter. I'll read it more then 2 times if something big happened so I'll conpetely understand everything for the next chapter. It can get annoying to some people but I've been doing it ever seen I can remember and it seems natural to me.
So short answer, yes I read a lot.:)

Wow...i'm the first to say Other!
Well, I used to read everything, but I read abnormally fast! So I go through books to quickly. I LOVE reading a good book, but I'm awfully picky. So most of the time I hate reading, esp. when forced to read. Though any chance I have I'm reading fanfiction, but most of the people I know, don't consider that reading! So....I am 'Other'!

I like to read. I like the Harry Potter books, and my favorite novel is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
I made my self read it a while ago, it was hard because usually I'm stuck reading text books and have no time to read anything else, but I made time for this book. It was nice to be able to read something for fun...Oh yeah, I also read posts on this message board...hmmm, maybe that's why I don't have time to read much else. LoL

I used to be an avid reader. It has been quite awhile since I picked up a book though.
My favorite author is Robert McCammon. His characterization skills are the best I have seen, and the plots of his books are outstanding. The best book I have ever read was written by McCammon. It is called Swan Song and focuses on the aftermath of WWIII. It is kind of similar to The Stand by Stephen King, but it is so much better. It is almost 1000 pages long, and I always end up begging for more after I have finished it.
I also love Dean Koontz and Stephen King as well.

While I can't stand Dean Koontz (with the one exception of the novel Lightning... actually take that back... I can stand some others as well... but Lightning is the only one I remember really liking)... I love both Robert McCammon & Stephen King. Although most people haven't heard of McCammon. In that genre, I would rate Dan Simmons pretty high as well.
I'm an avid reader, who often gets off track due to academic pursuit. Pursuing a specialist in English Literature in University had me reading over 50 books a semester... burning me out completely. Now, being in law school, I find that the only reading I can muster is Law School reading, and an occassional pool side book.

Oh no Jen... You did not just diss Koontz... :( I love his books. I have read almost all of them and I have loved almost all of them. Lightning is one of my favorites, so I am glad that you at least like that one.
I am happy to hear that you know who McCammon is, and that you enjoy his work. Whenever I bring him up, the first thing that people say is "Who is Robert McCammon?"
Dan Simmons is a good author as well. I have read some of his work, but not as much as I would like to.
Ever read anything by Greg Iles? Another one of my favorite authors. Michael Connelly is another author that I like. Blood Work was one of the best books I have read. I only wish the film with Clint Eastwood would have followed the book, because I did not like the film at all.
I hear you on being burned out with reading. There was a time when I would read like 3 books a week at least. But now it has been a year since the last time I picked one up.. LOL

I'm very slowly reading again... I just finished Memoirs of a Geisha... and I'm now reading The Blind Assassin.
My problem with Koontz is that eventually all his books seem to feel the same. As a result I've only really liked a few... and loved one. I loved Lightning... one of my favorite books when I was younger. I also liked Hideaway (I think that's what its called) and the new one Life Expectancy (about the clowns & the predictions).
I've never read anything by Iles or Connelly... do you recommend?

From Greg Iles, I highly recommend Mortal Fear.
From Connelly, I highly recommend Blood Work.
These are two of my all time favorite books.
I would give you a premise for each book, but whenever I try to summarize a plot of something, I always give too much away.
Also Jen,
If you are into the spy genre at all, I highly recommend David Morrell. Brotherhood of the Rose is an awesome book as well.

i read almost anything i can get my hands on! and i usually have anywhere from 3-6 books going at a time. i love SW books, and always try to have a book in my purse. esp. since my high school is rather crappy and i usually have lots of time to just sit, so i read. there is nothing i like more when the world gets stressful, than to just plop down on the couch and get lost in a book.
Best fiction: Star Wars REvenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover.

I average a book a week. I read while I do other things like eating breakfast or working out on the elliptical trainer.
I read all kinds of books but am not into Horror (other than Stephen King, my personal favorite), Sci. Fi., or Westerns.
I mostly read for enjoyment so I haven't liked too many of Oprah's choices--too heavy and I found myself wanting to yell at the main character to stop being stupid.
If anyone here is into a great historical/romantic fiction series, read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I'll warn you that they are large books so if you can't deal with 500+ pages for a book you should skip them. And no, they aren't those stupid bodice ripper type romances. These are more sagas than anything.

I used to love that book!!! I adore Gary Paulsen, I've read a lot of his books. But now I've moved on to bigger and better places :o .
I love Greg Iles!! He's awesome! Although I haven't read a lot of his work and have just recently become a fan, I really love The Footprints of God. It was a great book, better than the DaVinci Code IMHO :D .
Guilty to say I read Nora Roberts and Luanne Rice who do the whole "love story with a twist of mystery". I've never read Koontz, though I have a book of his (Dragon Tears >>any good?), but I do find that for some authors if you read a lot of their work, they pretty much are the same thing, just with different faces and names.

I always have a book on the go but it has to be a good one or I just put it on my shelf and never glance at it again, or give it back to the library. I have around 1000 favourite books and the list keeps growing with every book i read! :D

Yeah, I generally like to read; it depends on the subject I'm reading about. I'm a Humanities major, so I'm focusing a lot on literature and the arts, in addition to religion. (Of course it also doesn't hurt to take out my trusty Bible every now and then and read something through that; I like the stories--remind me of having superpowers :p )
I'm not even religious! :D

Ever since I joined the ksite book book club I've been on a reading frenzy. I just finished Incarceron by Catherine fisher its a good dystopian young adult read that got picked up as a movie with Taylor lautner as Finn ( I don't know how I feel about that lol). Im reading its sequel Sapphique now. I just got Divergent by Veronica Roth on the insistence of my friends who are raving about it. also dystopian YA, also picked up as movie. It seems to be the theme now adays.

Never even knew this Thread existed! :D. I love reading and when I get into a really good book, then its nearly impossible for me to put down the book! I'm finishing "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest" by Steig Larsson. Its brilliant! A type of Harry Potter/Very hard to put down type book! It's the last of the "Millennium" Trilogy :D. A fantastic read. Loving it!
