I'll be gone for approximately two months. My sister (whom I currently live with) is moving, and she is taking her computer with her. It's actually quite lright :P By no means have I ever felt "alienated" (love the reference :P) I always have this fic at the top of my to do list, it's so much fi=un for me to write it and the friends I have made along the way are priceless, But as most of my fellow writers know, Sometimes life just gets crazy and try as you may story works slows to a crawl! :( So by all means pester away! I think the readers need a good way to vent! :)

Clark streched languidly hearing a rush as his lips pursed together in an inner yawn. He scrubbed a hand over his face, grimacing at the stubble that greeted his palm, 'I'm almost out of razors.' He made a mental note to put in another order at the metroplolis steel company, It was a little known fact that Superman himself, much to the enjoyment of the workers, came every few months to pick up his custom made razor blades. He smiled in wonderment as he realized that for the first night in almost 7 years he slept without a single nightmare, 'I told you we can start to heal now.' Clark just smiled in response to the voice in his head and set about a leisurely morning.

"Welcome back Ms. Small!" Taking in her obvious disarray, the maitre d'hôtel added, with a genuine look of concern, "Would you care to have breakfast delivered to your rooms?" Barely hearing him Mrs. Small shook her head in the negative, "No.. no thank you... I'm not hungry... actually I would prefer no one knows I'm here... Although I would appreciate a wake up call at 4pm." The elderly gentleman nodded with a slight bow of his head, "Straight away Mrs. Small," He turned to begin making her arrangements for privacy. Almost as an after thought, as she turned towards the elevators, he added, "Mrs. Small?... Rest well." She smiled, thankful for his kind wishes, "Thank you Mr. Tibbs." As the elevators buzzed up towards her apartments, she made a mental note to put in a good word about his kindness to Lex. Elizabeth's smiled faded as the elevator doors slid open, and her bad luck kicked in. "Mrs. Small!!! There you are! We have been worried sick! When you didn't get back last night, well.." Elizabeth brushed past her over dedicated assistant, "You what frank? Were you going to send out a search and rescue team? Come on I am fine, I don't need constant pampering!" Elizabeth dug in her purse, grasping her room key, she fumbled it into the door. "I just.. sorry, We just have this last party to attend before we head home... I was worried you wouldn't make it in time that's all... Luthor won't stop breathing down my neck about you! His assistants have been "checking in" all around the clock!" Annoyance leaked out of her manners as she desperatly fought off the urge to fire the man. "Frrank... you handle it! This is what I pay you for! I am starting to wonder why you have this job!" Frank dodged her exasperated arm as it flung out in a desperate attack on the door, "Because I am the best in the business, and you love me, (he offered her a self appreciating grin) ahh here allow me. (he reached pensivley for the plastic card and swiped the magnetic stip through the metal bars attatched to her door. A little green light flash before he swung the door open for her) Those things can be tricky..." He fidgeted with his manilla folder for a moment before she laid a hand on his tense shoulder. "Frank I'm sorry... I've just had a long night, and I am very tired." His little face broke open in a beaming smile showing off the wide gap in between his two front teeth, "Of course! Mrs Small.. " She rolled her eyes at the finicky little man, "Elizabeth! How many times!! You can call me Elizabeth!" Frank bobbed his head, "Of course Mrs. Small, Thank you."

Elizabeth sighed in defeat as she glided into the large living room. She tossed her overcoat onto the nearest couch and headed for the mini bar. Frank followed her in, frowning at the mud smudged on her white blouse, "So I have only one thing, then I promise not to let myself or anyone else bother you until you call for us..." He waited for her to finish a small swallow of water. "Fine," she agreed, 'What choice do I ever have anyways!' Frank half opened the file that he had clutched to his chest, then changed coarse and adjusted his square framed glasses, "We have a problem with a few of the dresses for tonight." Lana frowned at her water bottle, 'She had gone through great pains to design an outfit for each of the "honored guests." She raised an eyebrow signaling Frank to continue fast. "Actually it's just one... It appears that the govenor's wife spent the entire week sabotaging her husbands plans, I hear she caught him at the golf coarse when he said he was out of town on business. Anyways the dress is too tight around her chest.

Elizabeth's eyes bulged, "What! Why didn't someone notice this before! Didn't she try it on last week?!" Frank ran a hand over his thinning orange hair, "She didn't go to her fitting last week, I hear she threw a fit just to spite her husband and refused to do anything for the entire week!" Elizabeth sat down at the large desk and began rummaging through papers, "No no no, I don't have any more of that fabric! Ok think La, think!" Picking up the phone to begin the tediuos task of fixing this problem, she signed away any prospect of a nap before tonights festivities.

Clark stared in bewildered unbelief at the name on the article that was spread across page A3 of his Daily Planet weekend edition paper. 'Did Perry hire her... Oh man this is going to get interesting." A rap on his door tore his attention away from the news, he walked briskly to his door and swung it open. "Good afternoon Mr. Kent." Clark smiled in response to the young man's zippy grin, "Hello there Trog, got a delivery for me?" Clark stiffled an amused smile as he was tossed a garment bag. Already heading towards the elevator the teenager spoke while walking or rather hopping backwards, "Yep, I was on my way to karate practice when I got a call that you had an urgent delivery, so there you go, and here I go," He gave a happy salute as Clark balled up a handsome tip and tossed it through the closing elevator door, "Thanks Mr. Kent, see ya!"

Clark hung up his Tux and contemplated how to spend the remaining 6 hours before the govenor's Ball. The paper caught his attention again, and triggered the glimpse of the Pyrotechnic thug. Quickly getting into his Superman uniform, he flew out his window and sped across town . His boots crunched on the charred remnats of the abandoned orphanage as he searched for any clue to who was really at fault for this atrocious act. His X-Ray vision scanned over the black remains of a desk, he searched the surrounding area, and grunted in small satisfaction when his eyes fell on a toppled set of steel file cabinets.

Making short order of the work, he supersped through the content of the cabinet. Most of the papers were charred beyond reasonable readability. But one thing after another struck him as odd as he read tidbits if each paper, 'For a home with over 2o children, none of them being babies...' He read over a list of purchases ranging over a months span, '$2,015.83 for Diapers... 8,819.32 for formula... not to mention how are they getting this much money!' He glanced in the corner and saw a partial address: 2368 Dock Road... 62960-202. 'That is down at the docks, what business does an orphanage have there? Certainly not baby supplies." Clark lept into the air and headed for the waterfront, he made his way to the dock slip numbered 2368 and found it deserted. With intentions of coming back another day he headed home to get showered and dressed.

Clark arrived earlier then intended and settled for wandering amidst the scurying servants putting last touches on the vast array of food and decoration. He hopped out of the way of a small dark haired woman with arms full of exotic flowers. He chuckled in amusement at her obvious disregard to anyone sporting a Tux, this was her Domain and heaven help anyone who dare say otherwise. Clark let his gaze swing around the capacious room, his heels clicked on the dazzling black marble as he approached the west staircase. His eyes took in the curvacious architecture, he shook his head at Lex's ability to always provide himself with a perfect place for a dramatic enterance. A large white marble platform nestled glamorously between a double staircase, sconces lit the burgundy walls. Directly out from the center of the platform, swinging perfectly centered to the spacious ballroom hung a massive Crystal chandelier. 'That thing could alone could sell for enough to replace three of these annual fundraisers!'

Clark turned as guests began to trickle in through the Massive gold gilded doors. Spotting a familiar face he gave a wave as jimmy headed straight for him. Jimmy swung his ever present camera over his shoulder and clasped a hand on Clark's shoulder, "Hey buddy! You look like a million bucks! Hope you put that thing on your expense account." Clark glanced down at his Tux, and laughed a bit, "Ya it does look a bit over the top doesn't it." Jimmy swung around and leaned against the stairs handrails, "You must have had a nice little vacation." Clark looked out over the quickly filling room, "Why do you say that?" Jimmy paused their chat for a moment to pull aside One of Kansas' senator's, "Senator Murray, Jimmy from the Daily Planet, a picture of you and the wife please?" He replaced his camera on his shoulder and continued as if he had not just left for a few moments, "Iono, you just ... seem a bit less... Clark Kent... you know, Mr.intense, Mr. I'm so buried in problems that I forget to live a little." Clark shrugged slightly, "Ya well I guess I should take mini vacations more often then." He smiled briefly when he heard the loud squall of the govenor's wife approaching from outside, "Shall we get to work?" Jimmy hefted his camera in his hands and followed after Clark.

Clark made eye contact with his target and offfered a reserved smile as he approached. Clark inclined his head over the outreached hand of the short and squat woman before him, "Mrs. Tadd, always a pleasure. She looked him over with hungry eyes before reluctanly releasing his hand, "Pleasure is all mine Mr. Kent." Clark ignored her sultry inuendo and extended a hand to her husband, "Mr.." A blonde blurr beat him too it, and Clark found himself staring with disbelief at his once-upon-a-time best friend. "Mr. Tadd, Chloe Sullivan from the Daily Planet, may I impose on a few moments of your time?" She shot Clark a gloat of a smile and recorder in hand began her delving interveiw. After a few moments she snapped at Jimmy, "Are you going to take some pictures or should I have brought my own disposable camera?" Clark stared wide eyed, 'Looks like Perry hired her to replace Lois after all, So much for it being a one time story." Left with nothing to do Clark wanderedover to the buffet tables and helped himself to a a few pomagranate seeds.

Every head in the room was soon focused on the Balcony as Lex emerged with a beautiful brunette adorning his arm. The govenor and wife sidled up the stairs to join Mr. Luthor and the small group of "Honored Guests" as they emerged from the white doors leading onto the staircase landing. Lex offered a grandoise speech and Mr. Tadd offered a smaller one and then the room exploded into cheers. Music stared up and peope began chatting happily, each hoping for a chance to speak with the "Honored Guests."

(*1) But Clark neither saw nor heard any of this, his eyes were glued just to the left of Lex and his guest. [/i]'It's her, how... am I... [/i](He came into focus just enough to think of using his X-Ray vision) Her heart... she is here... alive...' His mind swam as his entire understanding of logic screamed at him, 'How could I have missed hat... wherOh no... oh Lana!" Clark watched with baited breath as her gaze swiveled over the room below, 'Look at me please! Look here I am!.....'

Elizabeth glanced over the crowd and grimaced hoping to quickly find a way to escape all of those ogling men. Her eyes passed over a particulary enamored young man with... 'Those eyes... his hair...' Her eyes ripped back through the crowd searching him out again...

Clark's heart dropped when her gaze swept over him, 'Just another face in the crowd.' Her failure to notice him left a brief moment where he fazed back into his surroundings, and he turned slowly to the sound of an annoyed voice. "Hello?! earth to Clark!" He attempted to focus in on the face but was feeling a little overwhelmed, "What?..." "I said I guess we are going to be partners in crime, I know we have had some rough times but we are going to have to find a way around them." Clark nodded distractledly. "So here's to better times," Chloe offered Clark a stiff hug, which he returned absent-mindedly, "Uh, ok Chl..." Clark turned towards another voice fast approaching from behind, "Yo C.K. are you feeling ok? You look like you've just seen a ghost!" Clark reached foor his friends arm, "Did you see her?" Jimmy wrinkled his face in slight confusion, "Who?!" Clark whispered in hushed tones and glanced up to the now empty balcony, The most beautiful woman in the world." Jimmy took him by the shoulders, "C.K. Oh man I'm so sorry. It must be hard to see her with Mr. Luthor... Come on I'll get you a drink." Clark tore himself away, "No! Not Lois! Lana!... Lana!!! She was right there! Didn't you see her?!" Jimmy shook his head in confusion, There isn't anyone with that name on the Guest list Clark..." Clark turned to ask Chloe, but she had already left in pursuit of her next interviewee. Jimmy tugged at clark's sleeve, "I really think you need a drink, come on man let me get you outta here..."

Elizabeth's eyes shot wide as she found him again... 'Hugging! Who is that!' Her eyes narrowed trying to figure out why that retro blonde hair looked so familiar, 'Chloe!!' Her mind spun and she found herself nearing the possiblity of throwing up, [/i]'Is she with him just to spite me... Because of Pete... It was an accident... we didn't even realize...! Would she go this far just for payback?...'[/i] "Mrs. Small! Do you mind!" She was jolted back into focus as the sinewy Mrs. Ving nudged her in the ribs, "What!" She snapped back harshly. Her cheeks colored when she saw every one waiting to descend the staircase, in a fluster she almost ran down the hundreds of steps. Aiming for the back door she hurled herself through the first wave of well-wishers. The farther she got, the slower her progress, until she was at a complete stand still surrounded by men of every age and stature asking her a million questions at once.

Clark stumbled backwards from Jimmy's worried face and began pushing his way through the crowd. "I did see her, I did, she must be here... somewhere,' He desperatly clung to the last shread of sanity that seeing her hearbeat had provided. He turned in a confused circle, feeling the push of the crowd pulse around him, he thought surely he was losing his mind.Smiling faces swirled in and out of his vision seemingly mocking him in his quest, 'Air I need air.' He fought his way through the maddening horde and gasped at the crisp air filling his lungs and soothing him. He heard the doors click shut behind him and was suddenly immersed in silence. (**)[/color][/b][/size]

(*2) He staggered through a maze of paths leading through walls of dense greenery, hearing a soft splash of a nearby fountain he pushed forward finally coming to rest against the cold stone of an oversized gaurdian angel with arms and massive granite wings extended, he reached into the basin at the foot of the fountain and splashed a few handfuls of water onto his overheated face and hair.

He started at the sound of soft gravel crunching it's way towards him, in an attempt to avoid prying eyes he dashed behind the nearest outcropping of greenery. Soft whispers of sobbing assaulted his ears and he became increasingly curious. When a soft wind picked up the scent it carried to his nostrils held him in a trance. He slowly emerged from his hide-away. His eyes came to rest on the back of a weeping woman. "La?..." She turned slowly a mix of apprehension and yearning etched across her delicate features.

She took in his appearance with a gaze so intense she was sure to be dedicating it to memory. Her hands longed to run through his dripping curls. And then he moved, so quickly that a fine spray of water cascaded over her as he pulled up just short of knocking her back against the fountain. Taking her soft face into his hand he spoke slowly, a tinge of disbelief peppering his words, "Lana, it's you... really you.. your alive.. how? I... Oh please forgive me! I... I thought you were dead.." He traced his fingers over every tear stained area of her cheeks. "Clark what are you talking about?" 'No, la don't talk... the more talk the less of this...' She closed her eyes against the feel of his carreses. Clark held a finger against her full lips, "Later, I'll tell you later... I just, Can I please hold you." In tenuos response Lana took a small step forward, closing the distance between them, Closing the barren gap of seven years.

Years of built up tears flowed over his chest as he wrapped his powerful arms around her. He inhaled her sweet scent letting it take him soaring through picturesque vision of pristine streams and sparkling mountaintops. Lana reluctanly pulled away from his warm embrace, "But Clark... I saw you, in there I mean..." she turned from him, steeling herself to hear his dire response, "Do you love her?" She hadn't noticed a ring, but that didn't mean... "What?! Love who?" Clark sidled around her bringing her chin up so he could look in her eyes, "There has only been you Lana, always you." She examined his soul through his avid gaze, "But Chloe.. I saw..." Clark's head popped backward in shock, "You saw an old friend atempting reconciliation after a year of dejected avoidance." (.......**)

Chapter 11


A peace washed over Lana as she fell back into his arms, “Clark, I've missed you so much.” Clark let a wide smile spread across his face, “Lana, let’s get outta here… maybe go somewhere where we can talk?.” She glanced in the direction of the boring party, “I would love to… but Clark you should know something… I’m leaving for Paris in the morning…” Clark’s eyes crunched together slightly, “But why? Is there someone else? (When she shook her head he sighed in relief before continuing) Lana, I can’t lose you again… Please…”

She ran gentle fingers under his eyes. The dark crevaces she found brought pain to her heart, “Because of me…” He pulled her hand away, feeling ashamed of his bedraggled appearance. “Because I am dead without you… because I lost you. Lana I need you, I need you so desperately I…” Lana hushed his mouth with her own. Her kiss felt so good it was nearing painful. His intitial shock wearing off, he returned her kiss, gently. Gone was the need for urgency, Feeling their hearts reconnect was all the assurance they needed, ‘She'still my girl.’ … ‘Still my Man.’

Clark pulled away feeling more than a little flushed, “This must be what it feels like to be intoxicated!” Lana giggled sheepishly, feeling a little light headed herself, and brought her hand up to pull a strand of hair from her cheek. Clark’s eyes followed every movement of her fingers as something that had been nagging him since the previous night clicked.

He glanced over to her neck and reached out slowly for the delicate gold strands that disappeared into the cleavage of her dress, “Lana your still wearing the necklace I gave you…” With his other hand he took her hand away from her flowing hair and held it tenderly in his, examining a plain band of white gold, “…and my ring…” He turned her hand over to reveal red, yellow and blue reflections dancing on her palm. She colored slightly, “I hope it’s ok… It’s never left my finger since you put it there… I keep the diamond on the inside because it comforts me... there have been times when I feel so lost without you… I wrap my hand around this and it feels like I have you by my side holding my hand… It made life without you bearable when I didn’t know where you were… didn’t know if you were ok… it aloud me to breath when life didn’t feel worth the effort… somehow it always seemed as if I had a part of you with me.”

(She smiled at the diamond resting on her palm) “It hasn’t been this bright since you left me… Every day... since the ... you know... well it would get duller by the day, I polished it for hours to no avail. Everyday the light growing smaller. After a while I came to think it somehow represented you, and as much as that tore my heart to think what could cause you to break in such a way... everyday, I found a small comfort that it must mean that you were still alive. So I looked for you, for six years I searched for you the world over, But nothing, until last week when I arrived here in Metropolis, I thought Surely, 'I am going crazy! It has taken me longer than I expected, but I am finally losing my mind!' I would turn a corner and catch a glimpse of your hair, I would get in a cab and become overwhelmed with your unmistakable fragrance, then last night… you appeared out of no where, and left me, just as clueless, moments later!

Clark gently held her gaze, "Well I am not dissapearing now." A soft smile swept over Lana's features, "No I suppose your not..." she paused for a moment in thought, ".. there is something I have dreamed of since you showed me.. well you know.. the flying..." Clark could barely suppress the grin he felt bubbling inside of his chest, "Can I take a guess?"
