View Full Version : Greatest Band Ever?

Who is/was the greatest band ever?.Id have to rank them;
1)Beatles
2)Pink Floyd
3)Doors
4)Rolling Sones
'Sgt Peppers' is truly 1 of the all time classics-along with 'Dark Side of the Moon' and the 1st album by the Doors-'The Doors'.
But I think the entire body of work by the Beatles puts them above the rest.So many great songs-'Yesterday'-'Fixin a hole'-'Long and Winding Road'-'Yellow Submarine'-'Let It Be'-'Revolution'
-and many many more.
I realize this is all subjective, but if someone says 'Coldplay'.....lol!
Essentially, this is a matter of preference. With that said, here's a condensed list of my favorites.
(In no particular order)
Queen
Pearl Jam
Stone Temple Pilots
Def Leppard
Rolling Stones
Queen would be near the top of my list primarily because I consider "Bohemian Rhapsody" one of the greatest songs ever.

Queen was great!Id put them in my top 10.
I liked Def Leppard too.
Never really heard any Stone Temple Pilot songs.
Pearl Jam to me is like U2-Im not putting them down-but I never got into it.

I have nothing against Coldplay-I heard them 1 time on some award show-so I really know nothing about them.I had just read they were voted the best band in the world-and IMO they arent in the same league as say the Beatles or the Doors. To me they sounded like another bland pop group. So I was pretty much joking-saying that 'oh-dont compare them to the legendary bands'lol. But as I stated -its all subjective-to each his own after all!If u enjoy them-thats what counts-but its fun to argue.
As for the other groups mentioned above;
The Beach Boys are great-theyd be in my top 10 also.
Green Day id put in with U2 and Pearl Jam-dont see what the big deal is myself.

But I still believe that. Not that I'm saying that their music is bad, but their's definetly groups that exeed the simplicity of Nirvana's music. And again I'm not saying that because music is simple it's bad. (cause if that were true there's no way in hell I would like the Beatles) All I'm saying is that their's definetly better groups with way more complex and sophisticated music than Nirvana.

ITs implicity is what makes it good. I am no big fan of Nirvana myself, but I like a lot of their stuff. I do believe that if it wasnt for them, Pearl Jam, and the whole Grunge movement, we wouldnt have ever had pop-punk and without pop-punk there would never be emo or any of the bands that you hear on the radio. Modern rock wouldnt exist as such. We'd all either be listening to Britney Spears, Snoop Dogg, or KoRn.

I couldn't agree more. From a historical standpoint they did indeed change the scape of music, but as a band, I can't stand Nirvana. However, from the bad comes the good, namely Dave Grohl, thus also giving us the Foo Fighters which rock like no other.
And just to give further ammunition to those who disagree with my musical tastes, I can't stand the Rolling Stones. I will freely admit that they've got three or four great songs, but that gives them one solid hit every ten years. Personally, I think that the Stones are a joke played by the record industry to see just how far they can go. This joke has succeeded so well that the Stones are still touring, and selling tickets at sickeningly high prices to hear Mick Jagger sound like an old crapped out version of his old self, while he continues his ridiculous 'dancing'. How can that not be a joke?

I cant believe that Led Zeppelin isnt getting too much love on this board. I mean they have arguably the most popular (and overplayed) song of all time in "stairway to heaven", Robert Plant's vocal's can inspire many, and all zeppelin songs can stir up some sorty of emotion, from the heavy riffs in "kashmir" to the feeling of a lost love in "Going to California"...while there are many good bands that came out of this time period, Led Zeppelin has to be the best all around band. After this long rant, my top 5 would have to be
1) Led Zeppelin
2) Pink Floyd
3) Nirvana
4) 3 Doors Down
5) Chevelle
All of these bands made my list becuase i feel that they have came out with a new sound that has not been heard prior to there time. While Chevelle may sound like tool, i feel that they take the entire hard/soft transition to a place it has never been before, while 3 doors down can go from almost a ballet (Let me go) to a good old fashion southern rock high energy song(Live for Today)

3)Chevelle-Awesome vocals and guitar, and theyr from Chicago! Check Out- Clincher, The Red, Send the Pain Below, Closure(awesome guitar), and Forfeit.

It is funny how everyone has their own tastes especially in music...I know The Doors are the classic all around band but to me they always sounded like carnival music so except for People are Strange I never got into them..It is hard to narrow down since I do love all styles of music and I loved AC/DC's Back In Black and Highway to Hell but then never liked them there after so they will always be in a musical timeframe like lots of great bands but when I think all time great I also think consistency counts..a band that has withstood all through the times they were together at least...
Queen
Aerosmith
Led Zeppelin
Guns n Roses
Inxs
U2
Green Day
The Cure
and for me even though I'm not a big fan except for all their older stuff..The Rolling Stones still by far has to be on this list..I mean come on they are still touring..my god that alone should put them on a list.
okay so he isn't a band but I don't care..I think he is one of the best musicians ever...
Johnny Cash- yes Johnny Cash I'm adding him because even when people hated country they loved Johnny..and who else could take a song like Hurt by Nine Inch Nails and make it one of the best songs of all time when sung by him. He went through so many generations and even until the end he sang with emotion.

Okay I will say Break on Through isn't so carnival like...and I know you don't hear The Doors per se at a carnival..but if for me Love me two times, Light my Fire..if you remove the singing the music always creates the image of carnival horses going up and down on a merry go round and I can't get that imagine out of my head when I listen to them..Yes and now you all think what a strange person...;) I know they will always be classic though for many people so that is just my opinion...and yes I should have left out Johnny but when I think of music he always pops up in my head..

I actually happen to like some most of the early work of all my musicians. The reason being that at that point, their music is super original. Two or five years after their first album, their music is always influenced by othe artists.
But like the Doors and Queen, they keep their style of music constant throughout the years which I absolitely love.

I actually happen to like some most of the early work of all my musicians. The reason being that at that point, their music is super original. Two or five years after their first album, their music is always influenced by othe artists.
This is an interesting statement and I believe it is true of most bands. However, I can think of 2 major exceptions. With my all time favorite group The Beatles, the opposite is actually true. At the very beginning they started out playing music that was pretty much in line with what else was out there and as they continued their music became more and more innovative and original. This is also pretty much true with Led Zeppelin. They continued to make very original music that to this day sounds completely different than anyone else.
My all time favorites are:
1. The Beatles
2. Steely Dan
3. Aerosmith (earlier stuff)
4. Pink Floyd
5. Emerson, Lake & Palmer
6. Little Feat

PATMAN,
I was wondering when someone would put Bruce Springsteen on the list.
Personally, I can't stand him, turn the radio to a different station the second I hear his voice but I know an awful lot of people who would agree with you.
That's what makes music great--there's something for everyone.

Well, lots of people love the Stones, but I think they've pretty much sounded the same forever. They are so overplayed on Classic Radio stations that I now also switch them when ever they come on.

The hardest choice for me to make, would have to be choosing my favorite band. I have listened to so much awesome music over my lifetime, I wouldn't dare choose. A few of my favorites include: Green Day, Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, U2, Metallica, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Stereophonics, Keane, 3 Doors Down, Lifehouse, Nickelback, Stone Temple Pilots, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, and Queen (Mercury was a Rock God)... See? There are more, but my fingers are getting tired. Just kidding. I've just lost my memory because most of that music listening was accompanied by not-so-healthy habits (for enhancement purposes only). Rock on.

I've been completely obsessed with Mew lately. I just bought their 2003 Frengers album. It was released for the first time in the U.S. January 23. :) I like their sound so much, it's so different from everything else in my music collection.

I think some reconsideration is necessary here. The thread is Greatest Band Ever--not the band I love right now.
I'm not trying to criticize anyone's taste in current music but let's face it. Many of the bands that are being mentioned recently haven't even begun to face the test of time. They might have a few great/good albums and then fade away. Who knows, maybe 10-20 years down the road they might actually qualify for "The Greatest Band Ever."
The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin--these are the kind of bands that qualify.

I think the obsession with "old is good, new is bad" severely limits these kind of lists. Pick bands that you feel are the greatest of all time, regardless of how long they've been around.

No offense meant. Nickelback reminds me so much of Creed and any other Grunge / Alt Rock clone. I see them as rock designed for radio airplay and record sales. If you like them, that's fine. They never did anything for me.

Impossible to answer. Music is possibly the most subjective medium in the world and people like different music for different reasons. Some people will like pop bands, some will like rock bands. No-one's right and no-one's wrong.
Plus everyone knows it's The Who.

The grandaddy of rock n roll, Robert Johnson. He was the first true "rock star" and the mythology surrounding his life and death have inspired many great musicians. Without him, influential acts like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Bob Dylan may not exist, or at least, not in the form we know them today.

Queen. How many soundtracks have featured these guys? Highlander, Wayne's World, Shaun Of The Dead, D2: The Mighty Ducks. I'm sure there's more I've haven't seen yet. Even Doctor Who eps kind of riff on them. David's first ep had bloopers with the aliens sitting around ala Bohemian Rhapsody.
