Wow, I was shocked at that statement. Luthor is definitely turning towards the darkside with a low blow like that. Ouch!

Yeah when I heard that I was like "OUCH!" too. It was like getting slapped in the face. I'm just glad Chloe took in stride.

"Clark is happy with Lana, thats all a REAL friend should care about."
Chloe won that verbal spat... hands down. (but agreed, low blow)

Check her out in the opening credits, that look she is giving the camera... good (insert deity or word of your choice here) !!!!
I think a lady in a hat gave one of those type of looks to Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers :p

Chloe did better than slap him... she beat him at his own game... verbal sparring.

It was a very cold thing to say. I think he was trying to play on her feelings in much the same way Lionel did in previous seasons. You can definately feel the darkness flowing around him in the last 2 Chlex scenes.

Lex's remark reminded me of the scene in Transference where Lionel is in Clark's body and he taunts Chloe. Very low blow, very cold.

Lex really doesn't know how to persuade people. That was harsh. But he doesnt like Chloe anyway. He didn't invite her to his wedding, she has nothing to exploit, Clarks powers or LAna's attractiveness. (Not bashing Chloe, but Lex secretly wants Lana).
I finally found myself rooting for Chloe in this one. She said what somebody should've said a long time ago to LEX : "MIND YOUR DAMN BUSINESS".

that line was definitely one of the coldest in the series. i shivered.

I totaly agree, but at the same time, that a GOOD line. Yes, Lex is turning evil, but that was so unexpected. A line that low, but still good.

I was taken back when he said that. It was like 'Whooooa, what an unbelievably mean thing to say.'
Go Chloe though! She desperately needs a SO on this show.
I am soo glad she told him back, and it was high time someone on that show did! Maybe he will finaly learn and stop messing with Chloe now that he saw he has accomplished nothing doing that so far!

See, i didn't see the third wheel as that insulting as it was him letting out his feelings for Lana as well. He wanted Chloe to sympathize with him is how I got that line, he identifies both of them as the third wheel and thus chloe's line about a "real friend" as if telling Lex to stop being jealous.

Wow. Evil Lex has definetely arrived. He knew how to hurt Chloe and he went straight for it. I am so proud of how Chloe handled Lex. Her comments have shown she has really matured into the type of girl Clark really needs in his life. Too bad the BDA can't see who really is the girl of his dreams. Chloe looked fabulous and stood up to Lex without missing a beat. Ahhh...proving that there are two types of girls, The kind you grow out of and the ones you grow into. Wake up Clark!

It was a cold, harsh comment mean to wound Chloe. But, at least it showed how intuitive Lex is that he knows how to wound her. Lex is suppose to be smart and intuitive and ruthless. I loved that tense scene and the way Chloe refused to let him get to her. She is so tough.
Love the Chlex!

Man that line about the 3 wheel was cold likes lets play with her weakness. she will tell me what I want. Like father like son.
Also that line by Lex " ah the happy couple sneaking off while theres work to be done"
evil lex is getting eviler
The line was so cold and the way Lex said it made it even colder. All hail to evil Lex.

i agree. when lex said that my mouth fell open and all i could say was what a low blow.
but i am glad chloe stood her ground. at least on the surface she didn't let it get to her. but i am wondering how she will handle the clana. but her comeback to lex later that scene: "stop asking questions or i will start asking my own" just makes me think that chloe, as well as lana, will have a part in the ever-growing rift between clark and lex. lex will get back at chloe because he has to get his way and have the last word.
I didn't think the third wheel comment was really cruel (not arch-villian cruel anyways), but it was quite catty ( me-ow Lex!). But, we know how the the truth hurts. I do think Lex is trying to turn Chloe against Clark by making her angry, because he knows she knows The Secret. It is just like Lionel did when he manipulated her with a job offer when Clark and Lana were together before and she was heartbroken.

You know I must say i do agree that Lex is taking his expected turn for the worse but this comment about the "third wheel" cuold have gone either way. I would like to think that he realizes that he is losing his relationship with Clark, they have been touch and go since last season. He now knows that Lana wants nothing to do with him, so even though the comment was incredibly cold and mean, it could have been his twisted way of trying to get Chloe on his side. Like 'oh look clark and lana ignore me too, I know how it feels, we should be friends'
He wants to know what happened in eppy 1 and he knows Chloe knows more than she will let on, so perhaps by playing into a weakness he was only trying to relate to her so that she would then begin to confide in him.

Everything the Luthors do is in the interest of manipulation towards a goal.
1. Lex never liked inquisitive people like Chloe
2. It could be said Lex disapproves of incompetence, that Chloe should just give up on trying to be more than friends with Clark
3. Lex never asks a question without knowing the answer . He knows Chloe knows the answer to what he suspects about Clark.
4. Lex sees the vulnerablilty in Chloe with Lana and Clark together and seeks to exploit it and turn her against them for his own good.
Personally, I found the "third wheel" comment deliciously devious...

I also liked Chloes comeback quote. She has balls alright

I liked the comment - it was meant to hurt and it did.
I liked Chloe's response. She fell into that trap once, letting her jealousy and pain make her do something wrong in partnership with a Luthor. She didn't this time. Character growth - it's a wonderful thing.
I also noticed in Chloe's "that's all that should matter" that she didn't say that it was all that did matter. She is a true friend, but it still hurts a lot that Clark loves Lana and not her, I think.

KAL's girl, you are on to something, he could have meant himself too. But he didn't it was a definite attck on Chloe because she was avoiding him. By him calling her a "THIRD WHEEL" it was like to pot calling the kettle black. He could have meant himself too but he didn't.
this whole Lex obsession thing isnt about just the car accident in episode one, and its been more than that ever since Clark found the caves . Its about Lex's obsession of "KNOWLEGE is POWER" and hes willing to step on or sacrifice anyone to get it.

Lex really went for the jugular. Still, I like Chloe's response even more. There was no sulking. There was no pained expressions. She mainted her stone face. In all honesty, I doubt Chloe has completely given up on Clark, but she is as good of a friend to realize that Lana is what he wants and be happy for them.
Still, something nagged at me about that remark. I felt some sort of ironic reflection in, both, Lex's and Chloe's circumstances. I think it's the dark cloud of Lexana looming overhead.

Even though I thought this comment was a low blow, I can see how Chloe's "real friend" comment was also meant for Lex, but maybe not for being jelous, but for investigating Clark. I think she's come to realize that Lex is not a real friend with all his investigations into Clark.

I agree 100%. Lex is in love with Lana, and he was looking for sympathy. maybe he was thinking that he & Chloe could have their own little pity party?
In the season finale,he told Lana - you mean more to me than you realize - and she just walked away OUCH. Now, she won't even talk to him.
Clark is upset with him & tells him that Lana doesn't trust him. And it is implied that Clark will take Lana's side.
I didn't see it as mean - I saw it as him starting to get desperate.

Lex is in love with Lana? That's a stretch...
Lex is selfish... and lustful, as shown by episodes like Bound, Heat, etc. He sees how happy Clark is with Lana. He's never been that happy. He wants that happiness for himself. Thus, he wants Lana.
If he was truly in love with Lana, the stone would've been second request in the finale of last season.
That being said, his desire to have Lana as his own (everything's a possession to Lex, like Clark's friendship, which he tries to buy back multiple times instead of earn) is driving him a lot.

Everyone is turning on Lex, and that in its own way is turning Lex.
Clark beats the crap out of him, Lana wants little or nothing to do with him, PaBo knows he's the villain of the story, Lionel hasn't been a Dad's Dad, and Chloe knows it all (because she has the super powers and looks in this story, Mr. Kent), and Lex is jealous as hell over that.
A lonely Lex is an evil Lex.

i guess lex was getting back at chloe for her bald joke in "rush"
It´s really irelevant what his plans with that comment were! He has to know, that he won´t get any sympathy from Chloe or anybody else for that matter! Not now, and not ever again!
And Chloe is to smart to fall for that trick twice, she made the mistake once with Lionel, something Lew knows about so he had to know that his little plan to get her on his side wouldn´t work! Unless, he has the hots for her, which a whole different problem all together! And, let´s hope that´s not the case!

I think Lex is hurt that Chloe chose Clark over him - not in the romantic sense (though that might be, too), but in the friendship sense. She had to pick sides and she chose Clark, just like anybody else in Smallville, despite everything he did for them. He wanted to get back at her.

That was very low and unexpected of Lex. I love seeing the dark side coming out. :)
What friendship? At best, what he and Chloe had was a former partnership based on the fact that each of them would benefit from Lionel being in jail! Chloe never considered him a friend, at most he was a friend of her best friend thus, someone she chose to tolerate and when needed take advantage of his position, inlfuence, money and power to help her get the story! If Lex thought she considered him a friend, he was deluding himself! So if he had been realistic about his and Chloe´s relationship he would have had to realize that he shouldn´t be hurt by the fact that Chloe chose Clark, which, may I add, was to expect! Talk about betting on the wrong hourse!
Now, Lana is a different story! Him feeling hurt by the fact that Lana won´t even talk to him, I can understand! Anyone would!
But Chloe! What did he expect her to do? Chose him over Clark?

And you know, it's not just Evil Lex coming out; sure he's evil and obsessed, but it's the downright look-you-in-the-eye and lie, as when he closes the laptop where he was watching the Chlark video and acts as if nothing, and certainly not that, could have happened when he spoke to Clark with his "is everybody all right?" crocodile tears. He has all the integrity of a company boss I once worked for, and enough decency that he may as well go become a used car salesman!

I also thought that Lex's comment was as if he had kicked Chloe below the belt. But to her credit, Chloe didn't wallow in it thinking "ouch, you hit me with a low blow". She took it in stride and gave some smack right back at Lex. She wasn't going to be thrown off-stride by a cheap shot.
Chloe is just so cool!

someone may have already said this, but i think the line originated in part from the fact that he has feelings for Lana, has since mid-season 3, and now her and clark, the guy who he knows lied to him are (to quote lex) "the happy couple", and well Lex is a tad jealous.

Lex proved in one comment that he is not a friend to all 3 of them.

I don´t know if he ever was!
Friendship was just a tool for him to get Lana to likeeee him:p , to get Clark´s trust, thus making it easier for himself to investigate Clark, and as for Chloe, well it is easier to catch flies with honey than with vinegar! Chloe is good at researching stuff, and when he needed something done withouth having to pay a pro´, he would just nicely ask Chloe to do it!
But that´s not true friendship! I don´t think Lex knows what that is, not really! He may have tried really hard at one point to make these friendships work the right way, but without much succes as we can see!
Well, you could read that line with subtext, as I can't help but doing ( i.e Lex is feeling abandoned by Clark who won't give him a second chance). Also, when he stared with such longing at the "happy couple" as they walked away. Who or what was he longing for? :) Lex is always so ambiguous.

Well, yeah I suppose one could read it that way! But, Lex has gotten a lot of ´second´ chances from Clark already, so how many does he expect to get! He had to know that this time he had no right to expect anything from Clark or to feel abandoned, because that´s what he deserved! As for staring longingly at the ´happy couple´, well if he is lucky he won´t have to watch them for much longer! 13 episodes tops!

You know how a bicycle doesn't need a third wheel? A love affair between two people doesn't need a third. Chloe is left out, her affection for Clark is not returned.
However, there are unicycles and tricycles, which you're not going to see on Smallville. :p
