I'm sure I wasn't the only to see those few stars that were brighter than the rest in the very last shot outside of the Talon. Was it a sign of Brainiac or what??

I think it was Orion but I don't know what it means

The myth says Orion was a great hunter. He was in love with this girl Merope, but she didn't want anything to do with him though... one day, Orion stepped on a Scorpion and that killed him. The Gods felt bad for the guy, so they put him in the constellations with his two dogs, and all the animals he hunted. However, the Scorpion was put at the other end of the sky, so Orion wouldn't get hurt again.

The song "Orion" by Metallica is one of the best instrumental songs ever written. It was played at Cliff Burton's funeral.

The greek version I know says that Orion was the greatest hunter on earth by she got into trouble with Artemisa goddess of hunting and the moon (and an open lesbian) she killed him sending a scorpion but later she regretted the kill and placed him among the stars and she did put he scorpion in the other end.
I wonder how many version of this myth there is?
Also in Egypt this was the constelation of the God Osiris and in the Nazca culture is the great spider we can watch from the air in desert.

I thought it was Orion. Looked like his belt for sure.

it was Orion. You can always find it by the three stars that make up his belt.

Ever since Lucy I've paid closer attention to the stars and constellations shown on SV.

It was Orion, only I don't know if that part of the sky has any meaning in the comics. Does anyone know if Krypton was in that area or something? Or if Brainac came from the Orion nebula?

Good questions FotW, now we just need answers from a more dedicated fan than me...

No, Krypton wasn't anywhere near Orion or his belt, it was literally on the opposite side of the galaxy from Earth. Orion is (if I'm not mistaken) in the same spiral arm of the galaxy that we are.

The significance of Orion's Belt, and the three stars that were brighter than the others, is that that's basically what the skies in look like, pretty much, through the late summer and mid-fall. Orion's Belt is VERY prominent in the night sky. At least, that's what they look like out in the small towns of the midwest, where I am... can you even see them at all in the big, lit-up cities? I haven't been to a huge city for quite a while, and don't think I ever bothered to look up when was in 'em before... lol

Seriously, yeah, I know that the sky images, like the two stars colliding, etc., have had some significance before... I really just think this one was to show the peaceful night sky, ya know, Clark and Lana at peace with each other, Smallville generally safe and quiet, etc.

The constellation at the end of "Mortal" DID look like ORION.
With a special emphasis on the three stars that make up his belt.

Random Orion thoughts:
The symbol of the Brainiac character from Superman the animated Series are three circles (maybe Brainiac is also a pawn Shop operator?).
"Tommy Lee" had a Scorpion tattoo.
"Orion" was a character from Jack Kirby's DC Series "The New Gods".
The really cool stuff I'd like to suggest is a little Spoilerish so I've set the text in a hard to read color. Highlight to see it:

SPOILERS BELOW!
There are some lines in the Ezra Small Hidden Prophesy #6 about:
Where all the lines converge,
many have sought the source of life.
The beginning is the end is the beginning.

This seems related to the "Linear Men", timecops who have their headquarters at "Vanishing Point" (where all the lines converge).
"Vanishing Point" is located in the heart of "The Source" which is associated with the whole "New Gods" mythology.

"The beginning is the end is the beginning" is part of the triplet about "Vanishing point" and "The Source".
It may relate to Clark's line in "Mortal" about the second meteor shower:
"Maybe it’s different this time. Maybe it’s not the end of something… But the beginning. A second chance."
(This line ALSO appeared in the Hidden Prophesy 6.)

But the beginning/end/begining line may also refer back to the timeless nature of "Vanishing Point" and the "source of life" line may refer "forward" to Clark's resurection in "Hidden". Put the two together and the mechanism used to "Revive" Clark may be "Time" based.

Alternately, it may be justified to combinethe significance of the THREE bright stars in that image of the constellation and the THREE way "Begin/End/Begin" line from the hidden prophesy and Clarks "new beginning" statement in "Mortal" about the meteor shower with another odd "Triple" item:
An article posted on the "Wall of Weird" had headlines about a threat from a "Triple Asteriod" (The same spelling was used in a headline on another article about another "Asteriod" threat)

Perhaps there will be yet ANOTHER Meteor Shower
:D

Thanks for the information and sharing those interesting ideas, too. It's fun to look for stuff in scenes, even when the stars might just be stars.
I know that 3 has many symbolic meanings. It also could be that Orion is a larger than life character in the sky and Clark is supposed to be someday.

Online Symbolism Dictionary fun! (http://www.umich.edu/~umfandsf/symbolismproject/symbolism.html/T/three.html)

Orion and the star Sirius were central to the Egyptian mythology of the pharoah's rebirth after death. It is believed by some that the pyramids on the Giza plateau were constructed in such a way as to create a physical heaven on Earth. The placement of the three largest pyramids corresponds to their location in Orion's belt and the proximity of the pyramids to the river Nile is analogous of the proximity of Orion to the Milky Way.

I am not sure if that was the intention of the writers or if, as was said before, it was simply a nice way to end the episode with a view of night sky many people are familiar with.

Perhaps a foreshadowing to next weeks episode?

I just looked up Orion's Belt on Wikipedia. The history section talks about Orion's Belt having been referred to in ancient cultures as the god of death or the angel of death. Foreshadow?

<alien voice from "Men in Black"> The galaxy... *gasp*... is on... *wheeze*... Orion's... *gasp*... b--.... b---... belt...

This all just makes me think of the ESPs and how many references to mythology there are... Oh my brain hurts...

I'm betting there is a purpose for Orion the hunter being there. Braniac? Or another hunter? Lex?

I thought it might be Virgo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgo) but that seems a bit too obvious.

I had a different idea of why they used that particular constellation pointing in the way it was, but won't repeat it. ;)
