Was Clark playing with the Kryptonians into thinking that he was just about to be pulled into the Phantom Zone [by slowly losing his grip, til at last holding on by just a fingernail for the most part] so they would look away/be distracted so that he could turn the tables in his favor [and regain a better grip on the the steel cable in the process] or did something happen (that I missed) that allowed him to gain strength and/or resist the pull of the Zone?
Just something that's been puzzling me about that sequence.

I think that they just took for granted that he was gonna get sucked in so they turned away, and he mustered up some extra strength to pull himself out. Kind of dumb. I guess there wasn't much they could do though, since if they tried to go up to him to kick him in then they would have been sucked in too. They could have sat there and watched him get sucked in, but then how could he have unleashed the sneak attack!!

Obviously Clark couldn't have been put in the PZ or that automatically kills Smallville, but why didn't they throw stuff at him to dislodge him from his grip and into the Zone? Especially when he was just holding on by the very edge of one finger.
And also, sort of OT, but why was it potrayed as both Aethyr and Nam'ek's heat vision blasts acted as exploding projectiles instead of just intense heat waves that either super-heated/melted/disintegrated anything in its path, like Clark's version? I could see where their heat blasts blowing up helicopters/cop cars would be like Clark's ability to a degree, but the ones that left mini-craters in that field while "shooting" at individual cops? Definitely not like Clark's version of heat vision.

Well, Clark can also very the degree of his heat vision, but he never needed to use it to blow stuff up, which is why we've never seen it. besides, he usually tries to be discreet with his powers, whereas blowing stuff up with heat vision is anything but discreet

Ahhh. I am not the best versed when it comes to all the comic book info and legend, so I didn't realize that Clark's heat vision capabilities included varying the degree of it.

Besides Clark's ability to alert the degree of his heat vision, Clark is also still a teenager while the other 2 kryptonians are clearly older/more matured.

Look at Clark's heat vision when he fried the camera in Obsession and when he melted the road in Magnetic. Look to see how different he focuses them.
Nam-Ek and Aethyr should have sent heat vision blasts at Clark while he was barely hanging on.
