Sam was Jeph Loeb's son who died June 16, 2005 from cancer.

What a nice gesture!
Both to Sam, who, even as a 16 year old had gained a lot of friends and respect from the comic industry and Smallville community. And to Jeph Loeb, who resigned from the Smallville writing staff last season to take care of his son and family.
Much of the Smallville concept was based on Jeph's "A Superman for All Seasons" book. An indication of how important Jeph's contribution has been is reflected in the name of the bridge which Lex was driving on when he hit Clark in the Pilot episode (Loeb Bridge) AND the River they plunged into (The Elbo(w) River).
That was so considerate of them to do that. God bless him and his family.
