In my opinion, it seems that the WB is promoting Smallville more this year than last year in that the ratings weren't that great last year, this is the big college start for Smallville, and it is paired with Everwood. I mean in the past Smallville has been stuck with not the best of shows, so maybe this year the ratings will be a little better with a bit more promotion and I am sure that the addition of James Marsters can only help so what do you guys think? Much 'needed' promotion this year then last - will it work? VOICE YOUR 'PION!!

Yeah, I think that they are advertising it a lot more. I even heard an ad for it on the radio! xD; Which was interesting. Omg. Angel actor coming to Smallville... This makes up a tiny bit for WB canceling Angel.. >> <<;

I think so, at least more than last year.

I've watched all three episodes of Supernatural, and there have been at least two commercials for Smallville each episode, and one of those annoying little ads in the corner during the episode. Earlier today, they had an ad on AIM, which they've had before too.

I'm glad. Hopefully we see a ratings increase this year for Smallville, just to give us a little breathing room where we don't have to worry about it getting cancelled.:D

I dunno, maybe . . . they are advertising this season as one that, if you've watched the show at all, or want to, this is the season to do it.

I think this will be a season that most people could watch w/out having watched the past season, because this is the one that leads into the canon that everyone knows . . .

it should be an awesome season

they didn't need to advertise to get me to watch

The WB has positioned Smallville VERY carefully and well this season. Smallville is up against:

CBS - "Survivor: Guatamala" (strong but vulnerable to losing audience because the potential "Smallville" audience isn't that interested in "reality" anyway.)

NBC - "Joey" and "Will & Grace" (Long established audiences but both VERY vulnerable because, well, they both really stank last season.)

ABC - "Alias" (strong, mysterious but vulnerable with Jennifer Garner's pregnancy skewing the plots, and it tends to have LONG story arcs, which bore some viewers.)

FOX - "The O.C." (Strong, lotsa beautiful young people and sex - (the REAL reason for Clana and Lexana). Vulnerable because not everyone is interested in relationship plots.)

UPN - "Everybody Hates Chris" (Strong comedy, the best reviewed show UPN has ever produced outside of "Veronica Mars" And "Love, Inc."? Don't know it - Don't care. Vulnerable because the writing on "Chris" is likely to be a tad worse after the pilot and people WILL switch at the half hour)

The WB has poured a TON of money into special effects and stunt casting. "Smallville" is now appearing in reruns on ABC Family Channel AND UPN (as well as new episodes on the WB). "Smallville" is begining to rival the omnipresence of "Law & Order". That demonstrates some impressive deal-making.

The pressure is on to solidify the core audience (comic-book readers, SFX buffs), reach out to the obvious extended audience early this season (Buffy-oids, Dukes, Star Warriors, sex-fiends) build buzz through the entire season (general stunt casting) and HOLD ON to everyone who tunes in (better continuity)

But still, the only way to get BRAND-NEW people to tune in is to advertise like mad! Which they are doing. Smallville could really kick-butt this season if the writers don't make any mistakes and ANY of the competing shows make just one mistake each. The direct competition is obvious and sort of exciting in and of itself. If "Smallville" gets better than expected ratings, the media could become interested in the competition, generating yet another level of buzz.

Thursday at 8pm is a much bigger audience then Wed at 8pm , so the WB is making Smallville there Flagship show.

I'm really curious to see how it fared against these shows. By the way does anyone even watch the OC anymore?

I think they realized its really the only show anybody cares about on their network anymore. I mean I'm shocked Charmed is still on, I have never watched that show but cmon' I have never heard any good things about it.

It seems as if they are marketing it heavily and it probably due to the new time change. I was bummed because I thought the show was still on Wednesday which means I couldn't have watched it but then when I saw the first of fifty promos (Exaggeration), I was so happy!!!!

I say the same thing about Charmed when a new season begins. I watched the first year and some of the second, but man the show got week and lame. It needs to be killed . . .
