Since the next generation of consoles are coming out soon, I figured a general video game news thread wopuld be a good idea. :X
Famitsu Publisher Talks PS3 Game Pricing
August 30th, 2005 Posted in Playstation 3, PS3
At the CESA Developers Confrence Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Enterbrain (publisher of Famitsu) talked about the price range of upcoming PS3 software. Much like Xbox and Xbox 360, he sees a significant price increase between PS2 and PS3. Hamamura-san forsees the cheapest PS3 software being at least $70 USD (EUR 57 / YEN 7,800) while the most expensive would be around $79 USD (EUR 65 / YEN 8,800). That will leave Canadian gamers paying $83-$94.
Perhaps Kutaragi was right and we should all just suck it up and get second jobs.

The new Zelda game has recently been delayed to the spring instead of coming out this fall. :(
Oh well, at least the game will be even better.

Yes, IGN posted that a little while back. But the game will have more in it, which is good.

I'm tired of spending around $300 every four years for a new console, not to mention the software. Now with new hardware coming out (and being more than $300) I won't be in line for Xbox 360 or any other game console for that matter. It's just too darn expensive and most the games released are not worth their price tag.

sstray72
09-04-2005, 04:52 PM
I don't think Nintendo is close to dead. They have the best 1st party titles in the world, and this new system should be able to garner some good 3rd party support since it has online now. All three systems will have their own benefits, and I will gradually buy them all.

matter of opinion stray. Online will play a big factor. I used to be a nintendo diehard i loved it but ever since the n64 things have got crap.

Besides the fact that the Revolution will only stress games, I'm thinking that Nintendo has learned it's lesson on it's game-mistakes in the past. They learned that cheaper media and online play are keys to garnering business and 3rd party support. I think that they will be on the ball. Their new controller wil be the only thing that may be a hinderance, because they stress innovation, so it may be funky again. But I can understand them not releasing anything about it so Sony wont vulture their ideas and get the credit for it AGAIN.

And Sony is making a mistake with their prices. ¥50,000 for the console alone? Jesus Christ. Do they think we're made of money?

Alright, if my estimations are correct, 50,000 yen are about $450!!!!

I'm hoping that they are going to do what Microsoft did when the released the X-box, sell it for $300 at a loss and hope to recoup the earnings in software profits... I can't afford $450 let alone $300.

Actually, it's about $465.
I doubt it. After all, they just recently started turning a profit off of the PS2. Sony's screwed. It failed in Japan, and I fear that it's doomed in the states.

Hey, I was close! In fact, it would probably go for $450 because Americans like nice round multiples of 50 for our products... :p
Looks like I'll have to wait for a PS3. I wish that the game producers would worry more about games, everyone already has a computer, a dvd player, an mp3 player, how about making a system that PLAYS GAMES!! That's why I'll always be a Nintendo fanboy.

Probably $500, as the U.S. typically costs more than Japan.
Word. I'm going to quote my friend Alfonso:
Sony are turning their consoles, and forcing other consoles (I doubt the XBox would have played DVDs should the PS2 have not.) to do the same. (Except Nintendo.) Consoles have stopped being GAME consoles and more Entertainment Systems, where it can play DVDs, CDs, tap dance and the like. Because of this the price is bound to be higher. (And because Nintendo don't have them in their systems, the price remains low. This is also thanks to the fact that they make the GCs pretty damned cheap.)
Just how high is already being felt. The PSP can do all the magic tricks the PS2 can, and more, and look how much more it costs to the DS. (And once again, I bring attention to battery life.) And now we find out how much more the games for the PS3 are going to cost.
As I said before, I have several DVD players. So do a lot of people, which includes their current Sony console. The PS3's only purpose will be for games since all its other features will be redundant to a LOT of people. And with those games selling at $70-$80? Doesn't look good in my opinion.
At this point, the consoles I buy will be for the GAMES, which is what people should be considering. The price of those games will also come into consideration.
sstray72
09-04-2005, 06:11 PM
$500... You're depressing me.
I bet you that the Revolution will be $200-$250. That's a great quote from your friend. These new systems will have so many unnecessary bells and whistles that will make the price unbuyable for the average consumer. Nintendo may gain a lot of marketshare due to their friendly prices.

I'm depressing myself. :/
No ****. I already have a DVD player, and a CD player. I don't need another, especially when it will cost me $150 extra. I'm guessing the Revolution will be $250-$300. And that's a helluva lot cheaper than the PS3. Here's another quote from the wise Alfonso:
The simple fact is, the Casual Gamer, (Who they seem to love aiming the consoles and games at.) which Sony actually created themselves, will simply not be willing to pay those sort of prices. They've forced themselves into a corner on this one.
Not to mention, what exactly is the PS3 going to be good for? DVD Player? I have two already, and will have three once I get a PS2, and four once I get a Laptop. Same applies for CD. At some point, it'll come down to games. The cheapest games will win, simply because Casual Gamers, Parents and those who don't have that sort of money. Like students such as myself.

The fact that the PS2 and X-box had integrated DVD players was cool back in 2001 because DVD players still costed around $150-200, but now I can go to the local drug store and buy one for 30 bucks. I don't need a home entertainment center in my console, I need a video game machine. Ugh, I say. They have hyped the consoles to have things like hard drives, wireless controllers, built-in wi-fi, things that let you "design stuff and sell" (wtf?), and a bunch of other things that make me say who cares. Besides the built-in network card, all the other stuff is extra. I could care less if my controller was wireless. That's probably just something else that will mess up like all of Sony's hardware does.
Rafael122
09-05-2005, 08:16 AM
All the more reason to stay with the PS2. I'll probably buy the PS3 in 4-5 years when the price drops some $200.
I'm assuming they are going to continue making PS2 games right?
Ketchup
09-05-2005, 09:57 AM
GUys, if I recall correctly, when PS2 came out it was around $350. PS3 is supposed to be $300 when its released... thats not too expensive considering the PC equivalents of the hardware it has inside would add up to well over a thousand.
Rafael122
09-05-2005, 10:20 AM
Those who are willing to wait a year and a half to two years like I did are probably going to get it for $150 bucks, which isn't so bad. The fact that the new games will be in the 70-80 dollar range is all the more reason to wait.
Things were a lot different when the PS2 came out, b/c the PS, while okay clearly was getting beaten by the competition. That's not the case with the PS2.

I got my PS2 for $300, but they forced me to buy that rediculous fireworks game for 50 bucks... I was one of those fools waiting in line at the local circuit city. It was hilarious, I was 9th in line out of like 100 people, and they only recieved 13! It was even worse at the WalMart, I think fights broke out! But anyways, I remember the X-Box sold for $300 even though it costed like $400 to make, I'm still hoping that the new systems will sell like this because there's no way that the average consumer can buy a $500 game console.

Your the first to actually realise this. While most video game consumers believe that the consoles' profit come from the console itself are wrong. The PS3 may cost 450-500$ but it cetainly costs more to make. Company's like Microsoft and Sony are making their profit off the actual software.
This in a way explains how the gamecube was able to compete with the Xbox and the PS2 even though it had no online compatibility.
Those who say that the Nintendo Revolution will fall are mistaken. In my opinion, the Revolution is the only next gen system that's offering something new and unique. The ability to download old NES games is cool on every level.
However I will say that I'm most impressed with what the PS3 had to offer. Killzone 2 already looks incredible whether or not that footage was gameplay or just FMV.
As for the Xbox 360....you'd think that Bill Gates would have enough resources to give Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on ALL Xbox games. Apparently not.

The thing I always ask myself is, if Halo 3 does come out, what'll really be different from Halo 2?
Sure Halo 1 and Halo 2 had differences, dual wield, online gaming, but what could Halo 3 offer that's gonna drive people to buy an entire console for it.
sstray72
09-05-2005, 01:56 PM
Yeah, Darkside X most MSRPs for things like cell phones and video game consoles are much lower than the cost to make them. It's hilarious to me that people think that cell phones are really "free." I really can't image the business people at sony and microsoft believing that a majority of consumers, especially in this economy, to be willing and able to purchase their product for well over $300. I really think that these high prices will bring Nintendo back, their system will be affordable, innovative, and also old-school at the same time. I think a lot of people will go for that. The PS3's power is impressive but the price is absurd. The Xbox 360 has the best online play, but the graphics won't be as good as the PS3.

Nintendo kicks ass in Japan. Sony failed there, and XBox is behind Nintendo. I love the way the PS3 games look. They're damn sexy. But way too expensive. I'm definately getting a Revolution first, and might get a PS3 once the price drops. ¥50,000? No way.

I think the Xbox 360 is a joke and I laugh at all my friends who think the Xbox 360 will pawn the PS3. They feel like the Xbox 360 is gonna be the ultimate machine, but what they fail to realise is that the Xbox wont be anything new.
I say to them all the time,"Do you actually think Sony is going to have the same online play as it did for the PS2? Are you really that stupid?"
It's true!! People don't even know what new features the PS3 will have. Hell they even know what the xbox 360 will have!!!
Who's to say the PS3 won't have better online play than the Xbox 360?
And I definetly think that the revolution has potential. Hell I might buy Revolution, play it for 2 years, and by then, the PS3 will be more affordable and have more software.

No way. XBox360 is a rushed piece-o-crap in my opinion, and I think that Microsoft will pay for their greed. It's the weakest console that's coming out.
I want to see what kind of online play the Revolution will offer. I've been playing SSBM alot lately after I heard they're making a new game. Smash Brothers around the world? Hell yes!
I think it will be Revolution first, with its more accessible price, PS3 second, because it's sexy, and XBox360 dead last.

I only agree with this for RPGs. Games like Final Fantasy have stressed graphics over storyline and gameplay. There has never been an RPG made to better FF6 or Chrono Trigger in terms of gameplay and storyline! Now, there have been plenty of games that have comeout since '95 that are great, I'm sure that you'd rather play RE4 on a gamecube instead of a super NES...

I think that Final Fantasy 7 and final fantasy 9 are the best ones. I will agree though, most RPG's today are pretty bad. Ocassionally their are great RPG's with original storylines like Kingdom Hearts.
Chrono Trigger and FF6 are classics enough said. But you also have to understand that because of the lack of good graphics, game makers were forced to have a good storyline that could drive the story.
Although I probably would play RE4 over an NES game, I will say that their are snes games that are much better than PC Games. NEW ONES.

Riden? Ummm, Im talking about the 9 minute trailer that was only released like yesterday or day b4 if im not mistaken.
Theres NO Riden(sp?).
Its basically an old Snake in a near future battlefield. Starts off first person through the eyes of an enemy soldier even though you dont know it at the time. After about a minute, the soldier looks left, he looks right, then boom he's disarmed by Snake. You also see some metal gears and a bunch of soldiers marching while Snake hides around the corner.
Then when it looks like Snake's been spotted with only one round left, its actually a lil robot from Otacon with some ammo and a grenade launcher for Snake to use.
It ends with Snake jogging off I guess to battle.
