View Full Version : What episodes have grown on you?

Are there any episodes that you started out disliking originally, but now that you like a lot more than when you originally saw them?

A few for me would have to be :

- Metamorphosis : At first, I really disliked this episode. But now after I have seen it a few more times, it has really grown on me. Bug Boy was a cool FOTW, loved the floating dream, JK's quote about Clark defying the laws of gravity, the scene where Clark opens the chest with the Kryptonite in it, etc.. It also had pretty good continuity with the Pilot as well.

- Cool : Another season one episode that I really disliked. But the more that I watch it, the more that it grows on me. It is still not my favorite episode or anything, but definately one that I can tolerate more now. Love Chloe's reference to Clark being from an ice planet, and the episode has some great interaction between Clark and Chloe in it.

- Dichotic : At first, I did not like this episode at all. I really can't stand Johnthan Taylor Thomas, and I did not care for the ability that he possessed. But the more that I watch the episode, the more I get into it. The S symbol Clark makes and how it is held up is one of my favorite scenes now. Seeing both Chloe and Lana get played is also entertaining... LOL

- Extinction : I really did not care for this episode all that much when I first saw it. The only scene that really worked for me, was Clark getting shot, because of how well acted it was. But now I actually enjoy the episode a lot, after watching it a few more times on DVD.

I have to agree with you on Metamorphosis. I thought it was ok at first, but then I started to like it more. And like you said, it was really connected with the Pilot. Even though it was a completely different story, you could really see the link to the previous episode. It's a shame they couldn't do that in future episodes. :\

Just from the top of my head, I have to go with Devoted. At first, I thought it was completely dumb and I was so lost (I watched the repeat last December, but I started watching Season 4 at Spell, so I was very confused.) After seeing it again last June, though, it made a lot more sense, and it was one of the funniest episodes ever, right next to Spirit.

vyperman7

I loved Devoted.

I thought it was extremely entertaining.

Spirit was OK for what it was. Lois in the dress(MY GOD), and "The crown is mine bit*h" are what made the episode for me.

Dawn was one of the better FOTWs imo. Well, not "her" exactly, but it was hilarious whenever she possesed someone, especially Martha and Clark.

vyperman7
08-20-2005, 12:13 AM
Martha dancing... LOL

That was great.

Also, this was one of the few episodes where Kristin actually impressed me with her acting. She legitimately looked like the Dawn character. The last time she actually impressed me, was in Truth when she was forced to tell the truth to Chloe.

Any mythos related episodes. The Perry White episode. Run. I could go on.

vyperman7
08-20-2005, 12:24 AM
Yeah, but these are supposed to be episodes that you disliked at first, and then started to like more and more. So are you telling me episodes like Perry and Run were episodes that you didn't like at first?

LexLuthorMetropolis

My mistake. Thanks for catching me there, vyperman7.

Nicodemus was one, but Lana has drawn me back to that episode over and over. :D

vyperman7
08-20-2005, 01:36 AM
Nicodemus is such a popular episode mainly because of getting to see the ass of KK's body double.. LOL

The part that cracks me up is the beginning when you see Bo Duke driving in the truck, and the theme from Dukes is playing on the radio. Gets me everytime.

Pretty much every episode has grown on me unless I liked it the first time I saw it, because I enjoy watching all of them. But I guess Craving, Nocturne, Redux, Magnetic, and Facade are some of them that have grown on me.

vyperman7
08-20-2005, 06:49 PM
Craving and Redux could never grow on me. They are stil just terrible in my opinion, as well as Magnetic. I actually liked Facade the first time around because of the Clois moments.

Craving and Redux each have a scene or two that I enjoy though. I love the scene where Clark kicks the door in for Craving. I have used that scene in my music vids more than a few times, and the scene I love from Redux, is where you see Clark superspeed under water. I also love the line where he says that he will be in college studying journalism in five years, because he likes to find the truth in things.

mario masta
08-20-2005, 11:06 PM
Yeah, in Redux, I liked the Clark/Lex/Prinicipal Reynolds parts of the episode, but the rest was terrible. :\

vyperman7
08-20-2005, 11:25 PM
Speaking of Principal Reynolds whatever happened to him anyways? He was only shown once in that episode.

What I don't understand, is why the episode was never shown during season one. It was originally intended to be a season one episode. That would have moved the episode count to an even 22, and made season two even out at 22 episodes as well.

It never made sense to me why they moved it to season two.

mario masta
08-20-2005, 11:30 PM
Well, I remember Jonathan mentioning Reynolds in Rosetta (I'm pretty sure it was that one.) Other than that, we haven't seen him since Redux. Also, was the guy in Commencement handing out the diplomas supposed to be Reynolds?

As for Redux being held-up to Season 2, your guess is as good as mine. I mean, it wouldn't have been that out of place if it were in Season 1, since it shows Smallville High getting a new principal.

There also wasn't anything in the episode that showed Pete knowing the secret yet either.

Talisman. I know alot of people like that episode but when I first watched it I didn't care much for it. I don't even know why I didn't like it. But then I rewatched it and I found myself really enjoying it.

Good topic! :)

Obscura. I really didn't like it when I first saw it. I dunno why. But then I started to appreciate it when it was on reruns on ABC Family.

Resurrection. I really hated this one when it aired but then my sister was watching it so I tuned in and it really wasn't as bad as I remembered it.

Scare. First time around I was bored to tears. After watching it on reruns, I really liked it, maybe because it was a ton of foreshadowing of what was to come in the season. Maybe I was just disappointed with the "Clark is shocked with what he does with his blood." But other than that, it was alright.

Forever. I went into this epectations low and didn't let myself enjoy it. Other than the fact that it shouldn't have been a FOTW in the first place, I loved the creepy element. Sure, there were a ton of plotholes, but this was one of the only FOTWs that I felt was a genuine threat since he was so desperate. Good character development between Jonathan and Clark, and I loved the Teague/Luthor scenes.

I actually really liked Forever, which suprised me. I thought that it would suck from reading the episode description. Much better than people give it credit for.

I LOVE Talisman!!

Definately on my top ten list. It is probably my favorite mythos episode after Rosetta. The coversation at the end between Lex and Clark about Naman and Zigeeth is great, and the rest of the episode is cool with Jeremiah having powers. This episode really focused on the Clark/Lex relationship.

Also, it has one of the best quotes of the whole show

"You can be the world's greatest hero, or its most mild mannered citizen, but the only person that can write your story... is you."

Forever - I felt kind of bored. It just seemed like, "Err... okay, when's it over?" At first, I was thinking, "Hmm, this is worse than Ageless." But I re-watched it again and found myself really LOVING the Luthor/Teague moments, Clark and Lois breaking into the school and Chloe trying to play it cool while in Brendan(was that his name)'s remodeled version of part of Smallville High. I think it was just because I was really, really tired when watching "Forever" the first time, but now I watch the Jason/Lex chase over and over again. It's actually a pretty good episode.

Oh, and I forgot to say, I liked the FOTW. Cool waxing/freezing type power. Neat-o!

I'd have to say Spell has grown on me.

I hated it at first, and still don't think it's that great, but if you can get past the obsurd notion of Lana becoming a 16th century witch, it's actually got some pretty funny scenes.

Forever was actually a good episode to me. Some of the points of the story are a tad ridiculous, but overall I enjoyed it more than others did.

Most of the episodes I hated the first time around I still hate. However, I liked watching "Spell" the second time around while the first time I thought it was incredible cheesy.

You know I didn't like "Spell" but after reading this I will have to try to watch that again to see if now it doesn't seem as bad. I have to admit most of the ones I didn't care for I still don't care for as well. But I have to admit "Spirit" even though still not a great episode, I found more entertaining the second time around and it did have to do with Annette O'Toole's acting the most. I just love when Dawn enters Martha and that whole acting like a teenager scene was great. I'll even admit KK also did a great job acting like it was Dawn in her.

I would say "Rogue." The first time I saw it, I didn't like it. I thought it was just an angry corrupt cop, and it didn't really fit with Smallville. But when I saw it again, I actually loved it. It is one of the best shows for father-son interaction between JK and CK, and it is one of the best for showing exactly why the Kent's had to shield Clark from the world as he grew up. An excellent episode to reveal the formation of Superman, in my opinion.

vyperman7

Rogue is one of my all time favorites. I loved it from the start!!

Great action and suspense
An awesome villan that was not a FOTW
Great special effects - Clark stopping the bus
Great dialogue
Great interaction between Clark and JK
Awesome ending with the speed blur on Lex's computer.

It is definately my favorite season one episode.

Other S1 Episodes I love are Leech, The Pilot, Hourglass, Tempest, and Hothead.

I'm not sure why I didn't like Rogue the first time I saw it. I think that maybe I didn't see the whole thing and didn't get what was going on or something. But anyway, I now think that it is one of the best episodes, and probably shows the strongest emotions and feeling on the part of the CK and the Kent's. In that episode, I really felt that I understood how difficult it was to be Clark's parents and how much they truly loved him. And Rogue has a great villian in Phelan.

I would say in general that most of the S1 episodes are better when you watch them again. The stories are mostly very tight and the writing is a very clever (maybe too much cheese and foreshadowing, but I like that!)

I am hoping that I feel the same way about S4 episodes, most of which I did not like the first time, but I'm doubtful!

Every season 4 episode that I have seen is much, much better on the second/third viewing as you notice things that you didn't see before. Example, Forever I remembered as being a bad FOTW episode but recently saw it again and remembered the Jason being shot, Lionel and Lex being tortured and Lex running with that stick!!! I can't wait for the DVD to really enjoy S4 the way it was intended! (Im a UK lad so October it is :()

Love the avatar, LionelLuthor. Has Lionel's head grown about two sizes though?

Anyway, I think you're right about S4. Last night I re-watched Onyx and liked it better the second time. I think S4 will be much better on the DVD's without all the darn commercial breaks too.

I am willing to give some of the season four episodes another chance.

The only episodes that I loved from season four were Run, Transference, Crusade, Jinx, Devoted, and Onyx. Pariah, Krypto, Blank, and Recruit were all decent. Commencement was decent as well, but as far as a finale goes, it was kind of a dissapointment.

I think Extinction has grown on me the most. When I first saw it i didnt think it was terrible or anything but after seeign it a few times i really enjoyed everything about it, not just the K-nite bullet scene. And i love the end with clark and lana. I dont even like lana that much but i really felt bad for her.

Extinction was an episode that I did not really care for the first time around and now it has gotten to be one of the season three episodes that I watch the most. It is weird how watching an episode on DVD can change your opinion. I just watched Commencement on DVD, and I liked it a whole hellava lot more than I did when I watched it on TV.

The DVDs are awesome.

Do you think anyone will like "Ageless" more on the DVDs? (I am one of the few who sort of liked it the first time!)

Actually, I thought that Spirit and Lucy were completely awful, and I highly doubt that the DVDs will help to change my mind.

I still love Hug from Season 1. The irony that Clark and Lex are best firends and will one day become enemies is great. The last lines still give me chills......"Clark our friendship will be of legend."

Ageless? Hell no! Well, the only things I liked about Ageless were when Evan "blew-up" at the end (I have to admit, the effects of him aging into an adult and then into an old man before popping were pretty cool,) and the conversation that Clark had with the Kent's about not being able to have kids.

As for Spirit, I loved that episode! :rotfl:

And for some reason, I actually enjoyed Lucy since the first time it aired (I guess it was because of the super jump...and Peyton List.) :D

I'm really interested to see what season 4 eps will become cult favorites. DVD's really help out with that. For example Visage has become my favorite ep in the series just by watching the season 2 dvd so much. So in time im sure some eps from season 4 will make ppl change their views.

I really hope you're right. Personally, I love Season 4. Although I can understand some of the complaints, I'm always surprised by the somewhat universal disdain of the season. I think Season 4 had several tremendous achievements (Crusade, Run, Transference, Onyx, Blank, Commencement) and several "bright spot" episodes (Unsafe, Spirit, Forever, Gone, Jinx, etc.). More than that, it had several great "moments" like the giant leap in Lucy or the True Romance shower scene reference in Gone or the slowly closing eyes in Forever.

I'm guessing Onyx and Blank will be at the top of the list of "cult favorites". Onyx has so many great lines and a tremendous performance from Rosenbaum. And Blank is so well done all around (acting, storyline, clever character interaction) that I think many will see its superb value.

I would have to say anything with Lois. In the beginning I really disliked how she was played. In time I have come to enjoy her. I mean I am a real L&C fan so I know the history. ED does have some real "Lois moments" and so in time I have ended up liking her interpretation better.

"Memoria" is just one of the best in the entire series. Period.

For pure entertainment value, you can't go wrong with the hilarious Red-K Clark eps. (I'm just glad it's not overused any longer -- the K is now silver, black, etc., etc.!)

I like "Lineage" and "Onyx" (Bad Lex vs. Good Lex!) too , and it's always fun to watch those early eps. from Season 1 and 2 when it seemed believable that Clark and Lex could be friends, when even Pete didn't know The Secret, and times were simpler then.

vyperman7
12-26-2005, 02:12 PM
The reason that I like Lineage is that it gives us some more development on what happened in the meteor shower. That is what always makes the episode enjoyable for me. The sideplot is alright.

Y'know, I wasn't crazy about "Drone" because of what I felt was the profoundly stupid "killer bees" FOTW, but I've found that it holds up surprisingly well on repeated viewings, and it has a lot of really nice character and relationship moments too.

I was never too fond of "Spell" when it first aired, but after watching it on DVD, I have started to really like it. Kristin, Allison, and Erica did great performances and Tom's dancing was hilarious. I especially liked this episode after watching the commentary with the girls and the director. I must say that it is one of my "fun" favorite episodes of season 4, now.

Id say now that the ep's that have 'grown' on me would be Spell and Ageless. I thought Spell was so stupid to begin with but, especially after viewing the commentary on DVD, it is very very funny. And Ageless might seem like a pointless ep with an idiotic plot but it was still nice to see Lana and Clark together again after a season of witches and stones and evil.

Commencement is one that gets better for me. The first time I saw it I was dissapointed, and it was probably my least favorite finale. But as time goes on, I come to like it more and more. Now it is one of my favorites from S4. I think it is mainly because Arrival turned out so well. My main gripes in Commencement were no Chlark talk about Clark and him being different, and not getting to see the FOS. But Arrival definately did a great job on both ends.

Metamorphasis, Extinction, Truth, Whisper, Velocity.

Mostly the S3 eps. I didn't like S3 as much at first because it's dark and the storylines didn't jump out at me. After rewatching, I realized the writing and storylines are solid, and the whole season is very well done.

Metamorphosis is definately one that has grown on me overtime. The first time when I saw it on TV back in season one, I didn't think too much of it. But with repeated viewings on DVD it has actually become one of my favorite S1 eps. Extinction is also another one I liked a lot more when I saw it on DVD. I still don't care much for Whisper though. I was one of the few years back when Velocity aired on TV that actually stuck up for the episode. It wasn't an all time favorite episode of mine or anything. But I liked it a lot more than a lot of other people did.

Thirst is one I hated the first time I saw it, but it's growing on me. It's the first of Clark seeing Lana for who she is episodes. He walks in on her packing to go to Met U, without her ever mentioning it. And you just have to love Chloe's saves on Lana's behalf.

Nospam
08-31-2006, 05:06 AM
I didn't think much of Thirst when it first aired, in fact I fast forwarded through most of it on my PVR to the Chloe/Khan and action scenes. I was at a friends about a week later who happened to be watching it, when I realized that I missed almost all of Chloe's voiceover. While I still think the lesbian vampires are plain ridiculous, Allison Mack alone managed to pull the episode from the ashes with her quirky commentary. I think John Glover or Annette O'toole are the only other actors in the cast that could have pulled that off, and the scene at the end where Chloe gets her dream job, entry level as it is, is a nice wrap up and foreshadowing to Superman.

Initially, I did not like the season three episode, Crisis, as I felt the idea of a "future phone call" was silly. After watching it a few times it grew on me and I realized that it is an "ideal" episode in that there is no romantic angst between any of the characters, there is an interesting Lex and Lionel subplot that plays into the episode's central mystery and all the characters are in the episode doing what they do best: Lana gets chased and needs saving, Chloe and Clark do their Scooby thing, Clark saves Lana, Jonathan and Martha are the concerned parents and Lex and Lionel are involved in their usual power play. A solid episode.

Now for the episode that gets worse everytime I watch it, "Wreckoning" is it. The contrived time reversal, Clark's ridiculous premise for not telling Lana his secret, Clark's over-the-top admission to Chloe of his fawning love for Lana (puke), the silly Lex/Lana interaction, the rushed storyline and the fact that almost no time is spent on Lana's reaction to Clark's secret after five years, all adds up to one disastrous and unsatisfactory episode. And it only seems worse everytime I watch it.

BadToad

Whisper, definitely. I never really thought much of it, then I watched it the other day and it was a lot better then I remembered. Its a very solid Clark episode.

Drone, I wasn't sure about it the first time around but now I really like it.Clark running for class president was cute and fun.'I stand for truth, justice, and other stuff.' hehe. For some reason I'm glad they made it so that Clark didn't win.I liked Pete in this episode too. And I also liked the Chloe/Clark 'fight.' It gave a future glimpse into how strong their friendship would be.The Lex storyline was good too.

The reason I am still not overly crazy about Crisis is because of Lana's stupidity. She manages to get away from Adam like three times the second time around before he tries to shoot her. Repeatedly she knocks him to the ground and he loses control of the gun. Knowing that he was chasing after her, and hearing about her death, don't you think she would grab the gun and run away with it? She just runs away each time and leaves the gun there. The whole time I was watching Crisis, I kept thinking to myself "Just grab the damn gun". But she never does.

Repeatedly she knocks him to the ground and he loses control of the gun. But then Lana would not have to be saved by Clark! Yeah, I know what you're talking about though. Lana was running through -- what was it again, a warehouse? -- and knocked Adam down a couple of times and ignored the gun as it careened out of his hand. Still, I think it stands up as a great "filler" episode with all the cast involved in an intriguing mystery. I am sure we could nitpick every episode apart to some degree.

I loved Devoted.

I thought it was extremely entertaining.

Spirit was OK for what it was. Lois in the dress(MY GOD), and "The crown is mine bit*h" are what made the episode for me.

Dont forget Clark catching his mom in the kitchen singing and dancing to some Ashley simpson song, that was funny sh-t.

I'd have to say the Pilot :\
First time I watched it, I was bored out of my mind. Then when I got the DVDs and after watching it a couple of times, I started to like it. I'm not crazy about it, but now I think it's pretty decent and I actually enjoy watching it :)

I can't think of another one. Either I like them or I just don't care.

Transference and Shattered

I wasn't really hyped up about those episodes when they first aired. However, the DVD has allowed me to really enjoy those episodes now.

I could almost understand about Transference.

But Shattered?

I thought that episode was pretty much loved by everyone. It is still my all time favorite Smallville episode.

Yeah I get why they had Lana not take the gun. You have to have Clark play the hero. It is just frustrating from the viewer's perspective to see a character that knows her death is coming and how she will be killed, but does nothing to try and prevent it. Especially when there is repeated chances to do so.

I know Shattered is great. It's just that when season 3 aired, for me Smallville was a show I casually watched and didn't cared for as much.

The part that cracks me up is the beginning when you see Bo Duke driving in the truck, and the theme from Dukes is playing on the radio. Gets me everytime.

it is a body double? good for KK. way to keep your dignity.

Commencement- great special effects with the second meteor shower and also enjoyed the scenes with Jason and the Kents.

Exile and Phoenix- a great season premiere and follow-up episode with Clark/Kal-El and Jonathan taking upon himself to bring Clark home and the fight scene between father and son was worth watching.

Delete- I enjoy the Lana vs. Chloe scene.

Arrival, Mortal, Splinter and Solitude- whenever these episodes repeat, I try to watch them, eventhough I have seen them quite a few times, but they were among the best of season 5 and I cannot wait to get the season 5 DVD set.

for me I would say Requiem was one of them since I hated it the first time but liked it the second time around. Bizzarro was one I did not really care for the first time around but loved the second time. And there are a bunch of other episodes to which I might or might not name at a later date lol.

Maybe not second time but over time I learned to like better

Spell and Thirst - I hated both of these at first but over time I learned to enjoy each in their corny way

Those 2 are the ones that really stick out. At first I rated both in bottom 10 episodes and now neither would make my worst 25 list

It's really hard to rate Doomsday. I thought the first 40 minutes were good but the last 20 sucked

Commencement and Memoria. Also Infamous and Echo lately.
