A/N: Okay, I'm not as experienced as all of the other awesome Clana writers that I've been reading on kryptonsite, but I kind of got the idea for a story and posted it on fanfiction.net, then decided to post it on here too. I hope everybody likes it.:)
Superman flew through the night skies above Metropolis, his eyes on the glittering city that stretched out below him. It had been a busy night so far; it was only 9:00 and he had already stopped two convenience store holdups and a mugging. Clark relished the activity though; he wasn’t at all eager to go back to his quiet lonely apartment. It had been three weeks since his divorce to Lois, and although Clark did not miss the woman’s harsh behavior and insults, he did miss having someone around to keep his mind from his lonely thoughts. It had been a mistake though to get married to Lois when memories of another love still haunted his dreams. Clark shook his head as he flew, not wanting to wallow in regrets and might-have-beens. Clark had resigned himself to living alone now, to keep his only close human contact revolved around saving people and writing articles devoted to righting the wrongs of the city. Both activities kept his thoughts from Smallville, and the people he had left behind when he moved to Metropolis.
Clark was flying low over Metropolis Park when the shrill sound of a woman’s scream cut through the night air. He changed his direction to where the sound of the scream had issued from, near the gateway which led into the park. A gang of street thugs were surrounding a young woman. As Clark landed, one of the men struck the woman brutally in the face. She cried out, crashing painfully into the gate behind her. Clark felt righteous anger rise as he saw the young woman fall to the ground, obviously badly hurt. He grabbed one of the thugs and threw him against the gate. The thug fell to the ground, unconscious. The two other thugs beat a hasty retreat, but Clark used his superspeed to catch them by them by their jackets. He swung them easily over his shoulder, and then swept up the unconscious thug that had fallen near the gate. He flew the thugs to the nearby police station, leaving them with the officer in charge that night. Then he flew back to the park to see if the woman was alright.
She was lying very still upon the ground, her long dark hair covering her face. She was dressed in old, faded clothing, which looked inadequate in keeping out the cold winter chill. Clark knelt down beside of the prone woman, and gently brushed her soft dark hair from her face to determine just how badly hurt she was. A gasp escaped Clark when he saw the face of the young woman. It was bruised by the blow she had received, and her lip was bleeding freely, but the face underneath the bruises and blood was one that he would know anywhere.
“Lana?” Clark whispered softly, a feeling of disbelief washing over him. Almost unconsciously he gently caressed her forehead, smoothing her hair from her face. Something caught in his chest as he stared down into Lana’s still face. He had no idea what she was doing in Metropolis, but this wasn’t the time to be asking these questions. Lana was unconscious and hurt, and needed to be taken to the hospital right away. His heart lurched with worry as he gathered her carefully into his arms. A whimper of pain escaped Lana’s lips when he held her to his chest, but her eyes did not open. Clasping her protectively, Clark flew up into the air, heading towards Metropolis General Hospital.
