I did it on SPIDER-MAN and it improved the film that much more since Peter David had gone out of his way to add more story to the film.

That's pretty interesting. I've never thought of doing something like that, but I can see your point.

I think I'll just remain unspoiled for Serenity though.:D

I don't think I could really ruin it either way.

I had the LAND OF THE DEAD script 4 months before the movie came out and still enjoyed every second of the film.

I try to do with most of the films that I go to see, but most of the time it doesn't happen. I was pretty close on CONSTANTINE but got a sneak peek and that completely blew my plan away.

I have respect for SERENITY but like to see different writers intrepretations on the material and how they handle them.

THE FINAL POSTER

This the complete version of it. They changed some of the coloring around River's face.

Of course, Mal is dominating looking over River's back.

I love how the "Fugitive" stands out in the print. Just gives you even more sense of the characters.

Summers
07-28-2005, 05:17 PM
Yea, I noticed that because its so close to Mal, and River has the word "rebel". It does give a sense of the crew :D.

LexLuthorMetropolis
07-28-2005, 05:20 PM
All the words just seem to allude to the bigger picture of the story.

People are more than likely going to asking what Serenity is, but that's what the film is for.

Exactly. I didnt even know what a Firefly was, but I'm sure Joss will say it again.

That's why I put on the first post next to Serenity pic...the Firefly class ship called Serenity :D.

Where's missing?

I see the word "Alliance".

On the same note as usual. LOL.

You have to wonder if the planet and the moon in the background doesn't have some further implication. Usually they do when there placed in a promotional image, but we'll know when we see it in the film.

Summers

Well, from the new trailer it looks like they crashed land there. Serenity basically is hurt real bad. So I'm assuming that's the planet they landed on.

Yeah, it seems like the galaxy behind her is two eyes looking at her. I'm thinking the assassain from the last episode of FIREFLY who has come back, but it's kind of vague and hard to make out.

In my opinion i think Serenity is gonna be a big hit with firefly and non-firefly fans, i can't wait for Septmeber it's gonna be the best month in...well......months (Serenity, Smallville, Supernatural and much more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

I heard on IGN ages ago that if this film does well that they are gonna make it a trilogy......and as much as i would like a 2nd series of Firefly, I would love 2 more Serenity films just as much.

Ok I'm offski's

Serenity #1 sells out for Dark Horse

From Newsarama.com - 2005-07-28th

SERENITY #1 GOES BACK TO PRESS

Dark Horse announced Wednesday that Serenity #1, the first issue in the limited series based on Joss Whedon’s upcoming film, has sold out at the publisher and Diamond and will go back to press and new printings that will be available in two weeks.

Dark Horse said it intends to fill backorders on the first print run with this new printings, but will allow retailers who don’t want their backorders filled that way to cancel them. The second printing will also be available for new orders. Issue #1 featured three covers, by John Cassaday, Bryan Hitch and J.G. Jones, respectively, and each cover will be reprinted as part of the new, second print run and can be individually ordered.

Written by Whedon and Brett Matthews, and illustrated by Will Conrad & Laura Martin, according to Diamond, “Serenity #1 finds Mal Reynolds and company in a familiar situation: broke, and on the wrong side of a number of very large firearms. Readers should expect cinematic action and offbeat characters in the Whedon mold, dynamically illustrated.”

Firefly : Serenity Part 1 Earned a ’Solid’ 1.3 Rating On Sci-Fi

From Gateworld.net - 2005-07-28th

SG-1 ratings steady with ’Avalon, Part 2’

’Avalon, Part 2’

Stargate SG-1’s ratings held steady in Season Nine’s second week, with "Avalon, Part 2" earning a 2.1 average household rating. But viewership for lead-out series Stargate Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica fell from their season premieres, with SCI FI Friday’s anchor show suffering a significant drop.

Stargate SG-1 led off the night once again in the 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific time slot. The second installment of the 3-part premiere drew more than 2.6 million viewers with the 2.1 rating, holding on to viewership from the season premiere.

The Stargate Atlantis episode "The Intruder" earned a 2.0 rating at 9 p.m., down 10 percent from last week’s premiere.

At 10 p.m. Battlestar Galactica suffered a 23 percent drop-off from last week’s highly publicized and widely reviewed season premiere. The episode "Valley of Darkness" held its lead-in audience for a 2.0 household rating. It is the lowest rating to date for the series, which premiered in January.

The three series earned ratings of 1.2 (SG-1), 0.9 (Atlantis), and 0.7 (Galactica) for their late-night reruns.

SCI FI also began reruns of FOX’s cancelled series Firefly at 7 p.m. "Serenity, Part 1" earned a solid 1.3 rating outside of primetime.

New episodes of Stargate continue this Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific on The SCI FI Channel!

Joss Whedon - About "Firefly" & "Serenity" Movie - Serenitymovie.com Q & A

From Serenitymovie.com - 2005-07-27th

Joss answers more of YOUR questions

Posted by: on Jul 26, 2005 06:07pm EDT

Q. You are obviously a comic book fan. Who is your favorite comic book superhero and villain?

A. My favorite comic book hero, that’s gotta be Kitty Pryde of the X-Men and my favorite villain has always been Thanos, the death obsessed universe-ruling badass who killed Adam Warlock.

Q. Buffy, Angel and Firefly (and thus I’m assuming Serenity also) all seem to contain protagonists who operate using their own senses of morality. At times, these morals clash with the laws and law enforcement agencies of the societies in which they operate. Is the occasional dichotomy of the legal and the ethical something you attempt to intentionally address in your work?

A. All of my shows deal with politics and morality and if that means doing what the authorities say then we’re in a world of trouble. I like the idea of comic book type heroes who operate by their own set of rules and standards and values and ethics. At the same time, I know we live in a world where that’s not the case and that conflict is fascinating. There’s never been a time in my lifetime where we need to question authority more than we do now, so I feel it’s always going to be relevant in my work.

Q. Hi Joss! What books are you reading right now (despite your busy schedule) and who are your favorite current authors?

A. Right now because of my busy schedule I am not in fact reading any books. However I have already reserved my advance copy of the next Harry Potter and if you ask me who my favorite current author was, I would probably have to say J.K.

Q. There is clearly a lot of American Civil War imagery in Firefly’s back story. Do you think a detailed understanding of that period and its aftermath adds a deeper understanding of the Serenity ’verse and the crew’s troubles? Do any of the subplots draw inspiration from historic events?

A. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have some grounding in basic American history when you’re watching this show but the fact of the matter is that wars and revolutions and the way people deal with them and the way people are oppressed afterwards and the way people work around the system or try to keep fighting or whatever it is, these are common to all nations and all eras which makes writing the show extremely easy because nothing in history isn’t relevant.

Q. Does Serenity the movie have the same ship set as Firefly?

A. The ship is designed after the one from Firefly. We did have to tear those sets down and also when we built Serenity for the movie we had to make her thicker and more durable because the movie screen will show a lot more than a TV will so we couldn’t take as many short cuts. But it is the same design as much as I humanly possibly could make it the same because I love that ship so much.

Q. What’s your scariest moment during the filming of either the series or the movie?

A. My scariest moment during filming is always the day when I walk in and realize I have no idea how to shoot a scene. This is not something that I tell anybody around me, I just walk around until I figure it out, but it’s scary.

Q. In developing Firefly, did you create the future you want, or the one you fear?

A. All good fantasy contains all of your darkest fears and your wildest desires. Inevitably I created a future that contains both my fears and my hopes; there’s unity among many of the planets that represents an accordance and harmony between countries that right now don’t get along very well, that’s kind of beautiful. And let’s face it, prostitution is legal. But there’s also a lot of war and contention and many of the things we still cling to, and ships that every now and then just run out of gas.

I so neglected doing my updates :(. Sorry, everyone.

I love how he comments on the history.

Well, Mal takes a while to warm up to. It did for me because he purposely closes himself off. Having to lose the war against the Alliance he just lost his faith in everything. Just like in the end of this episode he opens up more. I cant explain it without saying spoilers .

Yeah, just couldn't help but comment on it again.

It had all three formats - Windows Media, Quicktime, and Real Player. I've got copies of the Quicktime and Windows format if you need it.

Summers
07-29-2005, 09:17 PM
It does. It shows more of the premise, and Serenity taking a tumble lol. I knew Joss would have either Mal or Simon do the exposition on the backstory of River. I like the theme of "the secret" in the trailer.

LexLuthorMetropolis
07-29-2005, 09:22 PM
Hopefully, we get a sense of the coming events from the ending of the movie. I know it's too early, but I'm already trying to predict Joss, again. Just like in the Buffy and Angel days.

Summers
07-29-2005, 09:32 PM
I know lol. He always has little foreshadowing with either an object or a line. I'm know already I'm seeing twice, and then buy the novel .

I wonder if we will see Inara's kit again. He said that means something, but never got around to getting it.....hmmmmm. Like everyone else I thought it was a suicide kit, but he makes it sound like its not.

LexLuthorMetropolis
07-29-2005, 09:33 PM
More than likely if he referenced it. Besides, he has a tendency to finish off every arc he can. By bringing it to the screen, he'll just be able to show us that much more.

Summers
07-29-2005, 09:41 PM
I dont know he has about little over two hours to do it. For Joss that is a lot, however; not all of the arcs or itty bitty things can be looked at closely like he could in his series format. If he wanted to he could simply focus his camera on it to remind Firefly fans. He's good using scenes to his every advantage.

I'm hoping we learn more about the Shepard because there are things he aint telling.

LexLuthorMetropolis
07-29-2005, 09:45 PM
It's obivous we're going to be focusing on River, but River has a HUGE impact on everyone. We still the Mal and Inara relationship to put at least in focus (seems to be there in the trailer), Simon and Kaylee's ever growing relationship and like you said Shepard's background...Joss could slide that in at anytime.

As for Jayne, I'm just looking forward to seeing him act like "Bad guys!"

Summers
07-29-2005, 09:59 PM
Like I said there is a lot of arcs that were unresolved. He could finish some off, and lead-in the others in the last act of the movie like he usually does.

slayer
08-01-2005, 09:54 AM
It keeps it for as long as you want, but it can only keep up to 100 hours of recorded stuff

after the 100 hours are used up you have to delete stuff if you want to record anything else

08-01-2005, 10:13 AM
Yes, and no Dawnie...some drives are smaller...but the sweet spot is a 120 GB Hard drive..you can piggy back your other drive and save the saved programs you have, but if you try to transfer from one to another then you lose the info...

Mel, the higher the quality you try to record the less time you have on the TiVo...like mine is just 40, but if I record on the highest you end up only getting like 16 or something like that.

Serenity: An Interview with Gina Torres -Part 1-

For those who may not know that "Serenity" is based on the cancelled TV series, Firefly, what role do you play?

Gina Torres: I play Zoe Washburn, who is the captain's right hand on the Serenity firefly craft, a spaceship. I also happened to be married to the pilot, played by Alan Tudyk (I Robot).

How different will your character be from what was seen on TV?

Gina: She's the same chick. (Laughs).

Did Josh (Whedon, the director) make Zoe tougher in any way or was there any change to her personality?

Gina: No. It's a continuation of where we left off. It's a continuation of the stories. So basically all of the characters are in tact. All of the characters that you came to know and love are all present and are who they are. Circumstances determine certain reactions that we have. Circumstances that are particular to the storyline and so, stakes are very high and therefore we have to react in an appropriate manner.

It's very rare that a cancelled show makes it to the big screen, especially a show that only lasted 11 episodes. Were you surprised when you heard that Josh was making a film out of the show?

Gina: Absolutely. I wasn't surprised that Joss could pull it off. He could pretty do anything that he puts his mind into; but it was an extraordinary thing for me and everyone involved to have a studio do the first film.

Joss has a flare for creating very strong female characters such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. What do you think you have added to Zoe? Is there a little bit of her in you?

Gina: Yeah. There's a little bit of me in everybody that I play. Zoe was quite drawn in a way that was both very specific and left a lot for me to fill in. I certainly think that we share a sarcastic wit. That was cool.

Having done two of the "Matrix" films as well as your role in this film, would you say that you have a passion for the sci-fi genre?

Gina: No. It's just worked out that way. (Laughs). I like good movies. Not to say that there aren't wonderful sci-fi films out there, but it's not where I go first. It's not where I go first in the rental aisle I should say.

One of the things that's an interesting of the show/film is the western aspect of it. What do you make of it?

Gina: I thought it was great. I thought it was so smart. It's a really wonderful departure from a sci-fi world that we have come to be comfortable with and familiar with; typically speaking, the Star Trek world, the Stargate world, where there's sort of a cleanliness and neatness about it regardless of whatever trouble they may get into at some particular point. The future has both. The future has both gritty and savage and clean and "techno-hip". I think it's a very realistic point of view.

There seems to be a fascination with Hollywood to either put a female in a distressing view or in leadership position such as Ripley from "Aliens".

Gina: Yes, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot in the middle. Here's the thing. Once given an opportunity, we absolutely show and in many cases surpass many people's expectations of what a woman in charge can do. As long as it's cast well, and as long as the right woman is in the role and we feel we can follow that woman anywhere, then there's no problem. Sanaa had an authority. Sigourney (Weaver) had an authority. Linda Hamilton (from The Terminator) had an authority that was indisputable, and I'm told that I have some of that as well. I'm very excited about seeing Geena Davis in her next show, "Commander-in-Chief". I think it's exciting. I think it's wonderful. We are capable of a great many things and to portray or see that on the big screen, it's not a lie or a fantasy. It's just showing another aspect of what is very real.

In the film, there doesn't seem to be a lot of interaction between you and Alan Tudyk's character. Do you think fans will be upset by this?

Gina: I think there was so to accomplish in terms of pleasing people who are already coming to the table with a love for the show and introducing other people and also getting the story rolling that the focus had to be on the story and getting that story told; and sometimes things fall away. I think we tell a great story. I think we do a good job of bringing people into our world. Hopefully we will leave them wanting more and wanting to explore by buying the DVD and seeing where these people have been and getting more into their past.

Serenity "Behind the Script" Now Playing at Theater

From Serenitymovie.com - 2005-08-2nd

Post subject: Serenity "Behind the Script" Now Playing at Theate

Ok...I’m walking into the theater in Seattle Pacific Place on Saturday afternoon and as I turn the corner I hear something about "Firefly" and "cancelled TV show" coming from the theater. After sqeeing loudly and running in, leaving my husband confusedly following with the popcorn, I managed to catch the last few minutes of a "Behind the Script" feature on Firefly and Serenity.

They were showing some clips from the trailer, quotes from the cast and crew of the movie about how it got made after being cancelled as a TV show, the story of the prescreenings for fans and the awesome response, some clips of people waiting in line for and watching the prescreens, individual fans after the prescreens giving quotes about how awesome the movie was, etc, etc

Did anyone else see this?!? Where else is it showing?

Ailuri

I seen examples of these things right before the trailers air. I hope they show it when I see the movie Sky High this weekend.

The geek shall inherit the Earth (joss whedon & firefly mention)

An upcoming space Western called "Serenity" is based on the 2002 TV series "Firefly." Although Firefly was produced by hitmaker Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), it lasted only a few weeks on the Sci Fi Channel. Yet, it became a surprise hit on DVD, and the fan base spread through some officially endorsed Web sites.

In response to fan pressure, a movie version was greenlighted, and when preview footage was ready to be screened, Whedon used his own blog to announce a series of regional screenings. They sold out almost instantly. For a screening in June at the Creve Coeur theater, hundred of fans came from all over the Midwest, many of them dressed in "Browncoat" attire. Everyone sang the theme song in unison before Whedon appeared onscreen to introduce the unfinished movie. "We’ve done the impossible," Whedon said. "It is, in an unprecedented sense, your movie. So, it if sucks, it’s your fault."

Firefly - "Serenity" Movie - Nathan Fillion posts on Serenitymovie.com Boards

From Serenitymovie.com - 2005-08-5th

Post subject: Update from the Captain

There is a fire that burns within the hearts of Browncoats. Cross them at your own peril. This is one thing I’ve learned in the past three weeks. I posted a call to Browncoats to boycott a jerk. The results have been hilarious, I think we can all agree. However, my brother gave me a call, and has concerns about how far it’s gone, and I think he may be right. Let’s look at the pros and cons.

Pros- Comic book guy exposed. Lost some business as a result. Cons- Employees at his store are getting flak they don’t deserve. As a matter of fact, there were a number of employees who were kind and helpful. My pal Mark says he gets great service from the very same guy. Pros- The comic is incredibly popular! All these folks trying to get ahold of it is amazing and bodes well for the movie. Cons- There are two similar stores in Edmonton, Warp 2 and 3, that are not affilliated with Warp 1 for the same reasons I don’t I like ’em. They, too, are losing business. Pros- Happy Harbor is getting extra business. Browncoats are ordering their comics from Canada, just to support them. (Which is the most incredible thing I’ve ever heard of.) Cons- I’m starting to feel like a dick. I just wanted to boycott the fella, and now he’s being tortured. Pros- Funny stories of other comic store owners getting into business because they didn’t like that same fella. Trevor from Saturn Comics got banned from Warp 1 at age 14. As I understand it, his offence was asking where the Hulk comics were. Now, with his own store, he banned Darryl.

I think a delicious bowl of hot, steamy justice has been served. What more can one ask than a man’s eyes be opened to his effect on the world around him? I always try to think, though, what would it take for a man to change? Will being attacked make him a kinder man, or simply entrench him deeper? It is my hope, Darryl, that you will henceforth be kinder to the people that come to buy at your store. Make them at home. Make them a welcome guest. Charge what you will, but be honest to folks if they can get the same thing cheaper elsewhere. Then you will be respected. PS- You are not a crap catcher, I said that because I was angry. To you, Browncoats, I give props of the highest order. The support has been more incredible than one could hope for. It is now time we celebrate victory. This battle has left them bloodied and weary. Turn your battle worn selves back around, and go home to your loved ones with your heads held high. I salute you. To the employees of Warp 1, my apologies for any suffering you have endured as a result of my dissatisfaction with your employer. Perhaps you have suffered worst of all. I salute you. To Saturn Comics, who gave my niece a free comic, I salute you. To Wizard Comics, for polite, fun, and friendly service in Millwoods, I salute you. To Warps 2 and 3, my frank and sincere apologies for any collateral damage you may have suffered, AND I salute you. Happy Harbor, you get a nod, wink, and a salute. Salutes to my peeps, and to our fallen comrades (Remember Lux? He would have thought this was hilarious). I think all you Browncoats are amazing. Your wit, and your willingness for action. Job well done. This was no Serenity Valley. This one was a win. Let us be gracious winners, and leave with honor. Ears and noses shall be the trophies of the day. I will be sending flowers to Warp 1 as a sign of peace. Lilies, I think. Now my brother can stress less. Gorammit, this was funny, though, eh?

Now I feel as though we should find a proper cause to harness all this incredible Browncoat support. I don’t know what it is just yet, but it will definitly be more noble than a comicbook, and still funny.

Big academic blogger gives "Serenity" Movie a huge recommendation

From Danieldrezner.com - 2005-08-5th
August’s Books of the Month

...

The general interest book is -- [um, like, it’s August. Could you please suggest something that’s less.... non-fictiony?--ed.] I’ll do that suggestion one better -- I’m not going to recommend a book. Instead, I’m strongly recommending that you go out and purchase Firefly -- the Complete Series -- a DVD of Joss Whedon’s sci fi series from 2002. I confess that I missed the show when it first came out, but thanks to Tyler Cowen’s suggestion I checked it out and am now completely hooked. There are many, many, many paeans to Firefly in the blogosphere if you’re interested in them. Anyone who likes Battlestar Galactica needs to watch this show in order to understand the debt, both in terms of themes and visual style, that Galactica owes to Firefly (this is not meant to diss Galactica, which is a fine show, but rather point to it’s influences). At its core, Firefly is Whedon doing what Whedon does best -- making his watchers forget the multiple layers of irony they are used to in popular culture and care very deeply about what happens to the little world he has created. Be sure to check out Whedon’s commentary tracks for some of the episodes as well.

[So why now, why not save this until the fall?--ed.] Because Whedon has also accomplished something extrardinary -- he managed to convince a major movie studio to commit a fair amount of money and let him make a movie, called Serenity, based on the show. Whedon even contributed a final entry on the making-of-the-movie blog.

You can watch the Serenity trailer here. I suspect it will be an entertaining film regardless of whether you have seen Firefly -- Whedon also wrote the screenplays for Speed and Toy Story -- but I bet it will be an even better viewing experience if you have seen all 14 episodes of the show (the Sci Fi channel is also airing them).

[How in the hell did Whedon convince a studio to convert a failed TV show into a movie?--ed.] The best answer I’ve seen is in this Weekly Standard article by M.E. Russell. Besides the most succinct description of the show I’ve seen yet, ("Think of it as Star Wars, if Han Solo were the main character, and he still shot Greedo first."), Russell explains why Universal thinks this is worth doing:

Budgeted at a mere $40 million, Serenity will almost certainly break even once box office, home-video, and other aftermarket revenues are counted--which means Universal can afford to use the film to beta-test a new way of selling movies.

Rough-draft versions of films--with temporary music, editing and "placeholder" special effects that look like Nintendo 64 screenshots--usually have a carefully controlled release only to tightly-monitored focus-group screenings. They’re never shown repeatedly to their core audiences (paying core audiences, mind you) four months in advance of their official release dates. Nor do actors and producers attend these screenings with barnstorming vigor: But in Serenity’s case, all the major cast members have made surprise appearances during the screenings--signing autographs and holding lengthy Q&A sessions afterwards.

At the May 26 showing in Portland, some significant studio brass were on hand. Universal Pictures marketing bigwig Julie Brantley and Serenity executive producer Chris Buchanan introduced the film and watched it from café chairs on the side of the auditorium....

And even if the producers are worried, it’s a calculated gamble. The June 23 wave of previews has been expanded to 35 cities--including a couple in Canada--but the movie has still only been seen by a small percentage of hard-core fans. So the screenings create the illusion of scarcity and keep the fan message boards alive by relieving pre-release suspense in little kettle-steam puffs. It creates all-new sub-hierarchies of fans with "I saw it before you did" bragging rights. It inspires free advertising in the form of entertainment-press stories (including, well, this one) about the "Browncoat phenomenon." And, best of all for Team Whedon, revenue from these screenings will very likely be applied to Serenity’s opening-weekend gross.

The marketing plan rises to evil-genius levels when you realize all the ways the move from April to September pried open six months’ worth of free-publicity for the entire Firefly/Serenity franchise. Since the fan screenings began, Firefly DVD sales have shot up the genre charts at Barnes & Noble and Amazon. In July, a Dark Horse Serenity comic book, written by Whedon, will hit shelves, and the Sci-Fi Channel will soon start broadcasting the 14 Firefly episodes--all of them, in order.

None of which cost Universal a dime.

Firefly - "Serenity" Movie - Joss Whedon’s Australian Screening Introduction

From Serenitymovie.com.au
Hi. This is Joss Whedon. If you’re sitting here, you’re about to watch my first ever movie, Serenity... unless you’re facing the other way, in which case i’m not sure why you’re here but you might need to talk to somebody, maybe a professional. But if you’re one of the people actually facing the screen, then let me just say welcome. I created a world -- well, I had a lot of help, but this is MY letter so i’m taking the credit -- and you’re about to enter it. I hope you like living there as much as I have. Serenity is a very personal work with political resonance and a heartfelt message about the human condition and stuff blowing up. ’Cause let’s face it, nobody cares about that ’human condition’ stuff... in fact if you notice it, try to keep it to yourself. Just tell people about the stuff blowing up, so they’ll see the movie too. Thanks!

The fact is, i’m very proud of this movie and everyone in it. I’m excited to show you what we’ve done. And the best way I can do that is to shut up already. Enjoy.

Joss Whedon.

I love that he always keeps connection to his audience threw the means of letters, or the message boards.

Summer Glau & Adam Baldwin - "Serenity" Movie - Scifipulse.net Interview

From Scifipulse.net - By Ian M. Cullen - 2005-08-8th
It has been 2 years since we last saw the crew of Serenity when the final episode of Joss Whedon’s Firefly was shown on Fox. However come September 30 Firefly will get a new lease of life in the movie Serenity and in the recent edition of Dreamwatch Magazine Summer Glau who portrays the mysterious and somewhat disturbed River and Adam Baldwin who portrays the mercenary Jayne Cobb gave a little insight about their parts in the movie.

As many fans will know by now River was the victim of some pretty brutal experiments at the hands of the Federation, however in spite of this River slowly began to come out of herself even saving the ship in the final episode of the TV show, the movie sees more changes for River and for much of it Summer Glau’s acting is going to be tested to the limit due to the role being more physical for the movie due to the fact that the actress spent much of her pre production time learning martial arts.

“It was pretty intense,” revealed Glau, whose career as a performer started as a ballet dancer before she made the leap to acting. “I can watch how [stunt co-ordinators Chad Stahelski and Hiro Koda] wanted me to move and I can make the shapes, but it took me a few months to get that snap reaction. In dance, everything is very fluid, but you hold your positions longer, whereas in martial arts, it has to go out and come back super - fast. I pulled every muscle in my body. I cried every day and then one day, I just got really fast. It’s been amazing. They said, ‘We want you to do all of it yourself. We aren’t going to have to do cutaways; we’re going to actually show you doing this.”

In regards to returning to the role after a 2 year break the actress said, “It took me awhile to get used to playing River again,” she admits, “although it had always been my greatest dream to be in the film. After the series got cancelled it never left my mind and I never stopped wishing for it to happen. I felt really close to the character, to everyone [in the cast] and to Joss especially.”

Also returning for the ride is Firefly’s anti hero Jayne Cobb as portrayed by Adam Baldwin who was just as pleased to hear the news when told about the Serenity movie as any of his co - stars. The actor shares a touching story about how he and his son reacted when hearing the news that Serenity was a go.

“I was playing baseball with my son and he had as much emotionally invested in this show as we all did. He threw the ball over my head and jumped up and down and whooped and ran into my arms. We hugged and laughed and then we just cried tears of joy for getting it back. This character Jayne for me has been what I consider the role of a lifetime. Joss Whedon is one of my true heroes, because he could have let this show die, and he didn’t. For that, I owe him forever.”

As to any changes for Jayne in the new series the actor revealed a little bit of information, but for most part the character is still the same. “I’m still [Mal’s] pitbull,” Baldwin reveals. “He has to smack me occasionally here and there, but like I say, Jayne’s the guy that calls it like it is. I like to think of him as the voice of reason.” Baldwin then employs his gravelling Jayne voice: “’I’m the hero - hey, I don’t care what you think!’ I try to keep him a little smarter, a little less trustworthy.”

Serenity
The saga of "a nobody crew aboard a crappy little spaceship" is how Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon summarizes his feature-film directing debut - though the full story behind Serenity is about a thousand words more complicated. The $45 million sci-fi Western, a revival of Whedon’s ’02 TV series Firefly starring the show’s original cast, focuses on that crappy ship’s most troubled nobody, River (Summer Glau), a damaged teen prone to psychic flashes and flurries of violence thanks to mysterious government experimentation. The relatively unknown Glau - who underwent three months of martial-arts training to get ready for the role - wept when Whedon told her River would live again...then had a scary thought. ’’I said, ’If you have to recast me with Winona Ryder, or some kind of ’’star,’’ tell me. I’m ready for it,’’’ says Glau. ’’But no, he wanted me, thank God.

Serenity sequels

Gina Torres has officially dotted her I’s and crossed her T’s to reprise her role as Zoe in a "Serenity" sequel - if the studio calls for it. "Not everyone will be coming back, some of their stars are rising far too high, but Whedon’s locking most of the cast down for sequel one and two", says a studio insider. According to our friend with his glass against the door, "Whedon’s got his story mapped out already for the next one - it’s a tale that’ll continue for three films".

That's our Joss always thinking ahead. It also shows they are aiming for the big screen instead of small screen on Fireflyuniverse.

Hey yall, this weeks Entertainment Weekly has a good article on Serenity:

There are several thousand reasons why the film Serenity is coming to a theater near you on Sept. 30, and on this balmy Sand Diego evening in July, a couple hundred of them have just broken out into song. Some sport T-shirts that read Joss Whedon is My Master Now. (pop idolatry like this can happen when you make cult magnets like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel for a living.) But most are Browncoats, a division within the Whedon Nation devoted to Firefly, the producer's short-lived 202 TV series about a rinky-dink spaceship and its thick-as-thieves crew. Tonight, these true believers have gathered in this multiplex for a sneak peek at the miracle they have helped make possible: the reincarnation of Firefly as Serenity, a $45 million film written and directed by Whedon and starring the show's original cast. So when they rip into Firefly's guitar-and fiddle theme song ("Take my love, take my land..."), they do so with glee. And when the Master himself materializes from behind the curtain, they greet him like a golden god. Whedon soakes it in with a shy smile. Then, a trademark zinger: "A little enthusiasm might have been nice." He's joking, obivously. But if Browncaots everywhere would like to take him seriously, Universal sure wouldn't mind-much of its marketing strategy hinges on it. Since April, the studio has sneak-previewed the film a whopping 66 times for Firefly loyalists as part of a plan to mobilize Whedon's well-organized, Internet-chatty fans. (**I feel like such a used computer geek/RP**) Universal could use the extra muscle: There's a lot of heavy lifting involved, trying to explain a sci-fi Western in which cowboys giddyap on space freighters, fire Winchesters, and curse so damned:p much. In Chinese. (in case you were wondering why Fox canceled the series after 11 low rated episodes, now you know.) (**No, I don't. How Rude.**/RP)

For Whedon, the support from fans has sustained him through Firefly's arduous slog from TV flop to potential franchise. "It means more to me, in fact, than I care to admit, "says Whedon, 41, and Oscar-nominated screenwriter (Toy Story) making his feature directing debut. But in many ways, his fractured heart is there for all to see in his movie. "Nobody has felt more like Mal Reynolds than me," says Whedon, refering to [Serenity's Han Solo-esque haunted hero, battle-scared ex-soldier (Nathon Fillion) who must fight like hell in order to save the life of a strange, damaged child. "A lot of emotional issues have come up while making this film. And one of them," he says with a laugh, "is that I don't deal with loss very well.

Of Course, hardship and heartbreak were always supposed to be part and parcel of Serenity's world. Whedon dreamed up Firefly six years ago after reading Michael Shaara's Civil War novel, The Killer Angels. He pictured a gritty drama about the rigors of frontier life-"but on a spaceship, because I'm me," says Whedon, who saw Firefly as a scruffy Star Trek minus the noble causes and aliens. He fell hard for his new creation. TV veiwers did not. (**Hey! Watch it.**/RP) For all of Firefly's rich ingredients-including a prostitute with class (Morena Baccarin) and a sad, spacey teen (Summer Glau) tweaked by evil scientists to be a killing machine-the show was too eclectic for a mass audience. (**Taking deep breaths.**/RP) A Friday night time slot didn't help, nor did Fox's decree that Whedon lighten up his bleak concept with more Buffyesque quips and kicks. He agreed, though his gut told him that compromise wouldn't make Firefly any more commercial. "I chose to ignore it," says Whedon, "because I was in love with the show. It was like crack." The actors were similarly quixotic. "I had it in my heart we were doing something good, and because we were in the right we would prevail," says Fillion. "And I was crushed."

Whedon was too, but he refused to accept it. He didn't beleive he had to. After all, this was the guy who rescued Buffy, which was first a failed movie (based on his script) before it became a seminal TV show. After Firefly was snuffed in December 2002, Whedon spent nine months trying to reignite it. But cancellation had given the project a stink. Even UPN and Sci Fi Channel turned him down. "I asked all the homeliest girls at the prom if they would dance, and they said no, he says. "Then, the beauty queen showed up."

"I was a Whedon stalker," laughes Mary Parent, Universal's now-outgoing vice chairman of production, who dug Whedon's vision and no-surrender passion. She also recognized a potentially marketable Cinderalla story. A modestly budgeted film, Parent believed, was a gamble worth taking, and in September 2003, Universal optioned the rights from Fox. "I thought this band of underdogs could make for a cool movie," she says. "But I did want to see the script first."

So Whedon wrote. And wrote. And wrote, And wound up with a unfilmable, only-for-the-fans-190 page epic--"basically the second season of Firefly, he says. (**I'm a fan, where can I get that script?:D**/RP) He boiled the script down to a crackerjack chase flick charged with political subtext: Mal & Co. on the run from a government agent desperate to recover that lethal and loony tee, River. In Feb 2004, after the script was done (and Firefly emerged as a DVD smash), Universal cleared Serenity for launch. Browncoats cheered. The cast rejoiced. And Whedon...was pissed. (***wtf??**/RP) The battle to save Firefly finally won, Whedon found himself "burping up a a huge amount of an undigested rage." Serenity, he realized, was not Firefly; a two hour film just could not encompass all the stories he wanted to tell, and could have told on TV.:( "When the fight was over," he says, "I finally felt all the pain I never let myself feel."

But after that, everyone lived happily ever after; right? Not yet. In early 2005, the studio decided to move Serenity from April to September to sheild its little fish from the bigger ones-namely Star Wars. Whedon was disappointed for his fans, and the shift would be seen as a sign his film wasn't very good. Fortunately, Universal had an idea for assuaging his insecurites that dovetailed nicely with its intention to utilize Browncoats as buzz generators. On April 22, Serenity's original release date, the first wave of screenings was held, publicized solely through Firefly fansites. The next day, reviewers hit the Web-and fortunately, they weren't bad.

Stumping for Serenity could bring fans the glorious spoil of even more Serenity. Universal execs say the film would need to gross north of $80 million globally to garner sequal consideration-not an impossible dream, given that Whedon also boasts a strong following abroad. ("Trilogy!" cries Fillion.) Whedon is game, though he'd have to find time to juggle franchises: He's prepping a Wonder Woman movie for Warner Bros. "This doesn't feel like the end to me" he says. "But then, nothing with me ever ends."

Serenity hasn't healed all Whedon's Firefly wounds, but he does feel a sense of relief...and gratitude. "I know I'm a lucky man," he says. "But there's gotta be an easier way to make a movie.:D

I hope that I didn't make too many type-o's.

Summers

And of course, Book is nowhere to found in that middle group shot, which leaves me puzzled and has space for speculation lol.

Its cause the reavers got him.....

I don't know I made that up-couldn't think of anything better.

I've got a couple of ideas, but I really don't want to bring them into play since we already know there is sequel in the works. :)

RedPhoenix23 love the new avi.

Or maybe he had elsewhere to be at the time. As an example, Anthony Stewart Head, was in England during BtVS S6 photoshoots.

But honestly I think that shot is just a zoom in another picture. Book or Inara isnt in. I think they were by Jayne, but a lot pictures I seen of the cast they take people out of the shot. They are like outtakes.

I saw the Serenity trailer today at the begining of The Skeleton Key! It was awesome! That and the King Kong trailer were just about the parts of the whole movie.

Anyone got the Serenity Matchbooks? Class bit of merchandise, being given away at a Memorabilia show we went to on Saturday :D

LexLuthorMetropolis

Sadly no. Just the DVDs, most of the comics (various covers), but I have an ever growing list of SERENITY related stuff I need to get once it all starts coming out.

I'll defintely be looking for those off of Ebay before long.

Should have seen the price of the comics on Saturday, asking an extortionate amount of money for them...

Geez, I can only imagine.

I'm looking forward to the release of the models of the guns from SERENITY. I'm so badly wanting Mal's gun.

I was actually disappointed at the amount of Firefly/Serenity merchandise on sale there. When you consider there was a Serenity leaflet and the matches in the goody bag given to everyone, and someone walking around on a dinosaur wearing a Wash shirt (and had a Wash mask but never saw them wearing it) there was an amazing lack of anything else.

LexLuthorMetropolis

That's surprising but it's still early.

Things should be building up, besides there is a sequel already in the works as soon as Joss gets off of Wonder Woman. So expect it to really just to start building up over the next couple of years. I mean, we're still getting Buffy and Angel stuff 3-4 years after the shows have been taken off the air.

So, I went to 7-11 yesterday to fill my Fantasy American Football needs by buying a magazine before my draft at work. Once my sports nerd meter was filled I headed to the register. I happened to be looking at the other magainzes while walking up when I found Serenity #1 with Mal on the cover staring at me. Now I was a little short on cash, but I could just feel the spotlight and heavenly voices calling me to it. So I must give thanks 7-11 for carrying only one copy of it, and to my wife for not giving it to me for spending dropping so much cash before payday :p

Joss has made this film accessible for anyone coming aboard, so you should have no issue getting into it.

i'm not sure. i seem to remember hearing something of the sort. they probably showed an extended trailer of it or something.

LexLuthorMetropolis

Pretty much sums it up. Very seldom will they actually show the full film at Cons, if they do it's just clips or trailers.

I highly doubt that. San Diego Comic-Cons are for promotion, and not telling the whole product lol. They saw just mere clips of the movie. The last I heard they saw the same clips they are showing on Sci-Fi Channel, but I'm not too sure on that.

Post subject: Jossimablogification

Just dropping by to say ’hey’, maybe throw out a few behind-the-scenes tidbits to make you feel all special and tingly. Okay I can’t sleep. But I still might have a tidbit, we’ll see.

The marketing blitz is poised to begin. Hopefully it will be a blitz and not a tiny police action. Marketing is a very tricky business, as I’ve learned. Coming up with the tagline, "The Future is Worth Fighting For", was not a simple process. A couple of close contenders:

"The Future is worth Running Away From."

"The Future is All Visual and S---."

"One Captain. One Psychic. One Assasin. One Doctor. One Shepherd. Another Assasin, but different from the first. One Mechanic. One Companion, which is like a geisha or a courtesan, I guess sort of. One... um... did I do Mechanic? Which movie is this?"

"If you loved Katerina Witt in ’Carmen on Ice’, you’ll love this."

"Mal Takes His Shirt Off Already."

"Serenity. It’s like art, but in movie form."

"Get Ready For Rush Hour."

Now, clearly all good notions, but each lacking that one crucial element. I think we went the right way.

Gettin’ ready fro my trip to Edinburgh. Just one burning question: Is Sargent’s "Lady Agnew of Lochnaw" still hanging in the National Gallery? I’m excited about the film and all, but... if anyone in Scottishville can get me the 411 (that’s American slang for "four one one"), I’d be grateful. I loves me some Lady Agnew.

Oh, and come early September, I’ll be making another short jaunt -- and finally get to hang with my Aussie peeps! I’m hitting Sydney and Melbourne! Not for more than a day each, but it’s still my first time and I’m psyched! (See, I told you ther’d be some info if you hung around long enough.) I expect a proper Australian welcome, unless a proper Australian welcome involves paddling of any kind.

Well, back to attempt sleep. Keep fighting, and ignore Movieline and the Hollywood Stock Exchange. We make our destiny, peeps. you all know that better than anyone.

Yours (finally!) sleepily, The Man They Call Joss.

And, to be perhaps a little too honest even for you my dear peeps... I kind of did love ’Carmen on Ice’. Go figure.

Yeah... what Serenity table??????? Sure we looked at all the tables, unless it was in with the Manga ones we avoided... [bemused smiley]

"We stood out from the crowd at Memorabilia completely" - erm, not really lol!

"Everybody was interested in what we were promoting" - interested, yes. See it, no!

That is VERY annoying.
