No not the horrible movie led by Tom Cruise!!! The actual and first War of the Worlds from the 30's. Orson Wells was the genius behind the national fright of War of the Worlds in his radio broadcasting. I was wondering if anybody had ever heard the broadcasting before, or at least know who Orson Wells is.

But have you heard his radio broadcasting in the 30's?
He was a brilliant film actor and film director.

Oh that's cool. That's too bad he died in the 80's. He could've made some pretty cool films today.

I have heard the broadcast, pretty funny to listen to. Don't know why anyone would think it's the real thing though, but I guess in those times people were scared easily.
By the way, the radio broadcast by Orson Welles wasn't the first War of the Worlds. It was based on a book by H.G. Wells written in 1898 in which the invasion took place in England in the 19th century.

Yes I have heard the actual broadcast. They replayed it on Halloween some years back-it was great.I could imagine it happening. There was also a movie made about it called 'The Night That Paniced America'.Orson Welles was a great actor-check out 'Citizen Kane' or 'The Third Man'.Both classics!

He modernized the concept of War of the Worlds. So all these movies and stuff that we hear about is based on Orson's version.

Citizen Kane was incredible. It's said to be the best film ever made. But now that's disputable since that was said back in the early 40's.
I first heard of Orson Wells when I was just a chump. I was trick or treating and then a woman invited me and and my family to a special "screening" of War of the Worlds. It was fun. We went into this house and literally sat in a couch and listened to it. I was so tene the first time I heard the broadcasting. Then it all just became a joke to me.
i saw the orginal war of the worlds. the new one is pretty good even with the plot errors and all i just wish they showed the atomic bomb or hydrogen bomb being dropped on the tripods would have been cool...

Actually, Kane is usually said to be the best _directed_ film ever made. And I once heard Charlton Heston say that OW was the most talented director he'd ever worked with.
As for OW's WOTW broadcast, I bought it on cd a couple years ago, along with a '30s broadcast of Frankenstein. I think the only reason a lot of people thought it was real was because it starts off sounding like a regular newscast. And you have to remember that in those days the radio was the only source of national news that came into your home at any time-- no tv.
But people today are just as gullible. A few years ago a talk show host in Atlanta did a show in which he claimed to be privy to secret government news channels that informed him that military-trained dolphins had taken over a US submarine in the Pacific and were apparently threatening the destruction of the West Coast if their demands weren't met. This led to an Atlanta news agency sending a reporter to California to cover a story they thought they were being scooped on. :rotfl:
Another guy tried the same shtick later and it worked out pretty well as far as callers went. Many seemed credulous until a guy called in saying he was a ham radio operator and had intercepted a message from Japan in which our good Japanese friends promised us any aid they could muster, including sending us Godzilla. :rotfl:

Orson Wells was definetly a great actor.
And the reason it was so believable was as you said, their broadcast started with the news, then they just broke in with,"Pardon the interruption but blah blah blah."
And what made it even more gullible was when the guy that sounded a lot like Roosevelt went on the radio and started pretty much BSing the entire country. He was like,"Aliens from Mars have invaded the Earth. There is no salvation for any of us. Goodbye." <<<<Something like that. And that's pretty much when everyone was like...."Damn we're screwed."

And then the next it's like ,"We hope you enjoyed our broadcast of War of the Worlds."
