I can't wait to see what Joss comes up with for the movie! I heard it was supposed to involve the Reavers in some way! The DVD of the series comes out next week and can't wait to get it!
There is supposed to be a "cameo" of Serenity in the Battlestar Galactica mini-series... a quick flyover about 15 or 20 minutes in!

Firefly was absolutely brilliant and I still can't believe that it was cancelled. Grrr. It did have a horrible time slot though, Friday at 8:00 if I remember right. I can't wait for the movie to come out, I hope it makes globs of money. My favorite characters were River and Simon because they were both so interesting and there was a weird mystery behind them.

Vortigun
04-07-2005, 12:52 PM
Bah... it was cancelled mainly because of the stupidity of the network.

The two-hour pilot episode, fully introducing all nine charactors and their situations was cancelled because they network didn't like it. Joss had to write a new pilot AND second episode (as it had to be aired first and continue from the actual pilot) over just one weekend.

It was also put on the Fox channel, when it would have done much better on the Sci-Fi channel. Dispite brilliant reviews from respected critics the audience just didn't respond to it because it was on the wrong channel and they couldn't connect with the pilot that actually aired.

Irony at its finest.

Fav Character - Mal.

Fav Episode - The Pilot and Jaynesville.

Fav. Recurring Character - Mal's wife.

Is Mal the pilot?

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-21-2005, 03:20 PM
Mal is the main character. Captain Mal Reynolds, owner of the Firefly class ship - the details I'm vaguely remembering.

But he's only one of the main characters with the cast of 8, it's a very scattered yet well put together show.

TMLS' BROTHER
06-21-2005, 03:33 PM
Thanks my favorites have to be:
1st - the mechanic girl
2nd - the pilot
3rd - Mal

What's Jaynesville about?

roman1967
06-22-2005, 01:45 AM
I just got introduced to Firefly, and love it (borrowed a friend's DVDs). Too bad Fox cancelled it after less than a season. It deserved more.

My favorite character would have to be Kaylee (Mechanic Girl)

Jaynesville was hilarious. After a job gone bad a few years back (Jayne had to ditch the money taken), he returns to the planet to find he is a folk-hero (think "Robin Hood").

Probably my favorite episode would be "Objects in Space". River is pretty damn cool in that episode.

And I can't wait for Serenity.

I bought the boxset, and I'm just watching it now. Thus far I watched the first three episodes, so dont give me spoilers. I love it. I love how Joss Whedon puts this sense of friendship in all of his shows, and all of his characters are so different. Such as:
Wash-is the funny man
Jayne-another funny man but in a tough way
and so forth

I love the clothes they put on Mal, Simon, and Inard(sp?). They look very good on all of them. I love Mal's coat :).

River is interesting. I really got into her character in "Bushwacked" especially when she was just staring at the stars in amazement like a child while Simon is all scared lol.

Kaylee I love too because she is sweet. She sees the goodness in people. Joss totally had me when I thought Kaylee died in "Serenity". I mean at first I thought she wasnt dead because Joss loves to play the audience, but then I thought of all the surprise deaths he pulled on Buffy and Angel. That was excellent.

The Rivters(sp?) I'm already scared of. Sometimes what you dont see is scary enough.

Its so cute when the crew was playing basketball.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-24-2005, 01:30 PM
Since you asked - Inara and Reavers.

Not really a spoiler, but the movie is going to deal with River's secrets.

I'm glad you didnt. I only went into spoilers once in the whole entire Jossverse.

One episode looks neat of Mal getting his crew in a series of flashbacks.

Kaylee was funny in the teaser "Now I cant get down" lol.

The Flashback episode is great in its own right. One of my favorites. Goes into so much detail on each of the characters and gives us a real-up close look at Mal.

06-25-2005, 09:38 PM
Well, I saw "Shindig"(sp?), so cute. So Jane Espenson writing. I cant believe how sweet Kaylee was with her pink dress. All those men around her at he ball reminded me of Gone With The Wind, but Kaylee isnt shallow like Scarlet lol.

The swordfight was neat because it really went into how fighting is an art.

Safe was also neat was well. To see Simon and River as little kids....awww. One of the things I love is how the Jossverse does flashbacks.

I love all the writers from Joss Whedon to Rebecca Rand Krishner. They are really nice people who really love and care for the characters.

What I love about Firefly is that they use a lingo just like the Buffyverse. Where instead of cussing they said this foreign Asian language which is neat. You can tell they are saying something.

Yea, Drew(the newbie Drew) came on aboard and wrote "Slumber" and "Truth" which kinda paralleled "Nightmares" and "Earshot"...sort of.

IMO AlMiles are great writers. They really are, and Millar did an excellent job of directing "Memoria". They just need to be better bosses IMO.

I loved "Killed By Death". It kinda scared me since the demon only went after children. We got to saw little Buffy, and her fear of hospitals. It was interesting to see Buffy vulerable physically which is rare. Just too cute Trio moments.

I dunno, after "Passion," it seemed wayyy too anticlimatic. The latter of season two, I only liked episodes, it seemed, with Spike and Dru.

The demon was exteremly creepy! Another thing, I thought it was killed way too easily. But my favorite part was the development of Cordelia/Xander. Showed that she's actually a real person, not just some Barbie doll.

Santa Monica is down by the beaches while WB studios is up in Burbank (begining of the valley). Also... Fox produced the show and their studios are in the city... not in Burbank with Universal, Warner Brothers, and CBS.

Yea, I remember now. I had information overload lol.

Well, I finished Disc 2.

"Our Mrs.Reynolds" was funny. I thought those two girls were going to kiss, but then saying "your good". Inard covering it up she kissed Mal . Plus now we know a little about Mal's past.

"Jaynestown" was funny as well. The song had me lol . Kaylee and Simon finally got their feeling out in the open. I thought it was so sweet of Simon saying he is being proper as a sign of respect to Kaylee...aww. They also referenced Earth's Egyptian history  :D. It was one of the first things I thought of about that planet, and Firefly crew looking at Jayne's statue .

Book's hair looked like Don King . What was very interesting was Book and River's talk of the Bible.

Yes, it's right... Serenity gets PG-13!

"Serenity" Gets PG-13: As noted by someone on the official 'Versal board's chat room', the official Serenity website now lists the movie as having been rated PG-13 by the MPAA.

I could told you that by the trailer alone. Joss doesn't do R and besides that he's picking up a TV show, very rarely do TV shows to Film gain an R though the X-Files: Fight the Future came very close for profanity at one point, but the dialogue was cut down and stripped before the movie was shot.

I like how they set-up Angel and BtVS dvds more. On the SV dvds I want to skip the main credits, but they have very few chapters in one episode. I think there is only five chapters per episode on the SV ones.

But having cases for the discs make sense since it was so short.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-28-2005, 03:32 PM
Defintely makes it easier and more satisfatying. I'd prefer that all the box sets be like Firefly in design. I get tired of opening up my box sets and bending and folding, bending and folding until I get to the disc that I actually want. I have two of S5 Angel's discs sitting out and waiting so I don't have to dig.

Summers
06-28-2005, 03:48 PM

There is a big difference in how they design them.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-28-2005, 03:52 PM
All of them are made by different companies. Firefly was designed specifically by one of Fox's DVD offices (same goes for Buffy and Angel) and SV had one of WB's DVD offices designing it. In the end, it always comes down to the distributors of the stuff.

The test screenings are doing really well. They might let it come out earlier. Plus Sci-Fi has good fanbase, and a Jossverse fanbase as well. Well, see.

Personally, I also want an instrutmental Buffy soundtrack like Angel's is. I love how they dont always use songs, but the score is important(plus not-so popular bands give the show a feel as well).

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-28-2005, 04:31 PM
That was Joss' decision from the get-go as along as the indpendent bands supported the sound and atmosphere of the show. Angel was almost all instrutmental, when it came down to unless you count karoke and Lorne doing his thing.

They do need to release a Buffy instrutmental.

I was off by one - Once More with a Feeling, Radio Sunnydale, Buffy (TV) and Buffy (Movie.)

Yea, I know the music department always said it was Joss's decision on the style of bands on BtVS. Having so much pop-songs on 90210, Dawson's Creek, and SV its a nice change of pace for me.

Your counting the movie? If its just tv show its three.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-28-2005, 05:16 PM
Take your time. I'll be sending you Episode Two Thursday along with everyone else.

Bringing everything back on topic, I had to get Firefly as soon as it came out on DVD back in December. I was still working at Home Depot at the time and as soon as I had a window to go over to Borders I took the chance and bought it. I love this show as much as Buffy and Angel.

greenshady
06-28-2005, 05:18 PM
I actually think Firefly had more potential than I ever thought Buffy would in it's first season. Angel was already kind of set, with 3 season of Buffy backing it. Firefly could've had as good a run as Buffy, and hopefully we'll get something more than just 1 movie out of it.

My sister even loves Firefly just as much, and she's all about the relationships on television. But, we never got that far with Firefly, really.

Oh, and the Serenity trailer looks great!

TMLS' BROTHER

I thikn Firefly should have got a second season instaed of a movie but at least we got a movie :D

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-28-2005, 05:42 PM
FOX cancelled it because it was pulling in the numbers that they wanted. The movie came out of the idea of not being able to complete the season in particular and it will be wrapping those loose threads. 14 episodes is by no means a complete season for anything on FOX.

I think the movie is actually a step up in some aspects. We get to see higher budget effects and more worlds than we would be able to see on a budgeted TV show.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 01:30 PM
There have been rumors of Joss picking up the series with one character or a couple of characters from the movie for a while, but I think it'll fall on the wayside for a while with Wonder Woman on the schedule.

Not that it's not a possibility.

Summers

The difference in that parallel is Joss and his writers finally felt comfortable, and knew what to do. I mean Joss calls BtVS his graduate school for his crew and cast. Which it was. They knew more what to do in Firefly as compared to the first season BtVS.

IMO Its not a fair parallel.

I did finish Disc 3, and I was almost done with "Heart of Gold" until my batteries on my dvd portable went out. Hence recharging.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 01:36 PM
That truly sucks, but thank heavens for recharging capability.

It may not be fair, but it runs right there with the others. If it had been running as long as the other series I could see a fair comparsion coming.

Summers
06-29-2005, 01:41 PM
Still if you think about recharging is less than buying new batteries :D.

I agree to an extent, however; Firefly to me isnt in the same gendre as BtVS and AtS. Its easy to compare to the two Buffyverse shows, but Firefly is differently thematically and sci-fi orientated.

When I watch I cant help, but compare it to Star Trek. With that comparison I like Firefly more because the characters dont seem too distant. On Star Trek there was a distant with the characters because of the protocal of characters. On Firefly they are more human to me.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 01:47 PM
It's still genre television as much as I hate to classify it. Intelligent, character-driven genre television, unlike some of the shows that the networks pick up.

That's just how I see them, even though I believe Joss stuff is defintely on a completely different level than most of TV. TRU CALLING isn't far behind it.

I like to think of BUFFY, ANGEL and FIREFLY as the genre WEST WING.

Summers
06-29-2005, 02:29 PM
In my strange noggin. I put fantasy separate from sci-fi. They are two different gendre in my mind. I dont how I came up with that conclusion lol.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 02:31 PM
The catch to being an English major is sadly, you end up classifying certain details but like I said Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Tru Calling in my mind are superior TV.

Tru is in there for the fact that it deals with life and death on a intelligent level and questions the motives of fate, while having strong character interaction between characters and cast just like Buffy.

Summers
06-29-2005, 02:42 PM
I do them in as superior tv, but in comparing its hard to an extent to me.

I mean I compare SV to BtVS in no flat. We done it many times venting on SV trying to understand the things they do without fanwanking it lol.

I just cant do it with Firefly and other Jossverse shows.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 02:48 PM
Jossverse is Jossverse.

Tru is indirectly inspired by the Jossverse since two of the writers were actively aboard as co-producers for the series.

That's how I see the connection for that series in particular.

When it comes down to SV, you only have one writer that came aboard and wrote one maybe two episodes of the show. Joss has set a certain standard for the WB shows and SV is following the footsteps. It's genre TV as well, but it's not superior to Buffy. I think it attempts to be but the romance aspects and continuity make SV stumble.

Summers
06-29-2005, 03:25 PM
Jossverse is Jossverse on how they style their characters, dialogue, action, and continuity. I mean all three of his shows share those basic elements that are a glue to stick to.

I can see that a lot in Firefly. Its like Joss-style.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 03:34 PM
The only Firefly is missing is all the references to society and culture - focused towards movie, tv, music, etc. but since it's so far in the future I don't think that detail really matters.

Summers
06-29-2005, 03:44 PM

Maybe pull a Futurama, but like our discussion long ago, I think people are their entertainment hence the bars and constant use of the hangouts. We have all the technology, but people are getting use to themselves against since the Galaxy is Post-Civil and very Reconstruction.

People are just rebuilding their lives and I very much doubt these people have ever heard of DVD or VHS in centuries, even though they have the technological capability of it.

Serenity's crew is too worried about getting by day to day instead of finding stuff like that.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 04:05 PM
There's plently going on in the show, just watching for the details about the Alliance and the Reavers only could tide one over until the film comes up.

Just from my one viewing alone --

The Federation extends to certain points but is not willing to extend its basis.

Reavers never seem to stop, they'll keep going and it's possible to cross them anywhere in the galaxy.

Minor stuff like that goes a long way in Firefly.

Summers
06-29-2005, 04:10 PM
Do we ever see the Reavers?

Might I say there is a lot more nudity in the third disc. I mean Mal was nude . I think he had a tattoo on his upper thigh.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 04:14 PM
I warned you.

Reavers are never visually seen, but I think we get a peek at one in the trailer, but I can't confirm nor deny that particular detail. Purely speculation.

Summers
06-29-2005, 04:22 PM
You did. I just didnt know how much of the nudity...hehe.

It would be neat to see a Reaver in the movie, or just hints of them.

There was Buffy alumi in that those episodes though. Knox/Holden the Vampire(I knew he was it), but didnt expect him to be nude too lol. The Biker Boss from "Bargaining" on Buffy was Mal's friend. Mrs. French from "Teacher's Pet" was in it too.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 04:23 PM
Yeah, you asked me about the sexuality of the show a while back since you wanted to let your sisters view it with you and I gave you a full list of the details down to the sexuality in the episodes - particulary the opening of Inara and her first visual job and there on.

Summers
06-29-2005, 04:27 PM
Interesting thing on the sexuality you really have to see it. I mean was ready for it on some of them, but others I wasnt. It was executed really well, and they made sense with the storylines. So it wasnt bad, but honestly I dont think my sisters would go or ready for Firefly.

They loved Titan A.E., but this could be different. I see them likeing Kaylee, Simon, and River. But I dont know yet.

To change topic.

I was actually waiting to see Jayne betray Simon and River.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 04:28 PM
I think when you come down to Jayne, he's a big softie with a shoulder canon. He'll play the bad guy but he won't betray anybody on Serenity. I mean this literally - just remember how he played himself out with the gun that we thought he was going to shoot Mal with and he ended up wanting to trade it and how guility he felt about Jaynestown.

Summers

I sort of assumed River's arc is the most finale lead-up.

LexLuthorMetropolis

Before my batteries ran out I saw Inara cry when she knew Mal and Mrs.French slept together :(.

In "War Stories" it was so sweet seeing Kaylee and River playing. They are like sisters. I was shocked to see Mal's first meeting with Kaylee was right after she had sex with the mechanic .

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 05:20 PM
It suits the situation - yeah, it was weird having a meeting like that, but Kaylee knew her stuff and Mal cares for his crew. If they screw up, he's tempted to action, but he'll support them when he has to.

Operative word "has". It still was weird. To be honest I didnt think Kaylee had sex.

LexLuthorMetropolis

Kaylee is still wild at heart, she's got a sense of innoncence about her, but I think she has the tendency to make rash decisions. At times, she has the temper of a child but I think River is more the child of the group. Kaylee is interested in the world, but doesn't fully have an understanding of it. She'll stumble and make mistakes as she goes and Mal is more or less trying to protect her, even though she is involved with them.

Summers

River is definitely the child. Kaylee seems more like the teenager.

When come down to it, everyone plays a role on Serenity, either as a family member or as a person in the action of the series or both.

River and Simon -- Brother and Sister.
Kaylee -- Teenager.
Book -- Grandfather type, despite the fact that he denies it.
Mal -- Single Man in a relationship.
Jayne -- No affilations except loves to be with the ladies.
Inara -- More or less in a relationship with Mal.
Zoe and Wash -- Husband and Wife.

It's pretty diverse when you get into the relationships as well. I didn't even count Simon and Kaylee, defintely a strong shipper there.

Yea, I know. Its one of the Joss-styles. Its the same for BtVS and AtS. Everyone has there place, but they still progression within it. I got it right way.

It's kind of funny thinking of it now, I see a little ALIEN RESURRECTION in FIREFLY just slightly in design, but to say the least I'm with Joss - I hate that movie.

Summers

The Serenity's design reminds me of it. I just blocked out the rest lol.

That movie was okay IMO. Listening to the commentary
great best commentary EVER.

It just wasn't either of their styles. It gave way to Buffy's rebirth though.

That and we have that great River coming from the cryo freeze and waking up suddenly that reminded me of the movie.

I really liked the Series Finale and the first ep. Serenity I would have liked to have seen Teh Reavers some more

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 06:47 PM
The Reavers are likely to appear in the movie, but I can confirm nor deny that. All I know is there is some weird looking creature in the trailer that I believe might be a Reaver.

You said that on the last page. What do you think of the commentaries on Firefly?

LexLuthorMetropolis

I've only listened to the Pilot commentary and love them like Buffy and Angel commentaries.

I think all the commentaries have something to distinct to say, they just may not be the episodes sometimes.

The Docs on Firefly are some of my favorites.

LexLuthorMetropolis

Like I said I recommend Joss take on the theme and the main documentary on the making of the show. Having the movie coming up makes it seem ironic, but it flows smoothly.

Joss hints at a movie in the pilot com. I noticed

LexLuthorMetropolis

To be honest, not to cross threads or anything, I think just about all of these shows could be turned into movies.

I'm already hoping for a sequel to Serenity and we haven't seen it.

Summers
06-29-2005, 07:14 PM
If you think about each season in the Jossverse they are movies. At least to me they feel that way. Some episodes feel like I'm watching a movie.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 07:16 PM
I think of them more as novels in volumes like they refer to Angel S3 DVDs.

Summers
06-29-2005, 07:19 PM
Novels do turn into movies lol.

That's actually how I described Buffy. That every season is volume in a big series. You cannot read one, than you wont know the whole story.

With Firefly I dont how you would label.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-29-2005, 07:23 PM

The difference in that parallel is Joss and his writers finally felt comfortable, and knew what to do. I mean Joss calls BtVS his graduate school for his crew and cast. Which it was. They knew more what to do in Firefly as compared to the first season BtVS.

IMO Its not a fair parallel.

I did finish Disc 3, and I was almost done with "Heart of Gold" until my batteries on my dvd portable went out. Hence recharging.
Sorry, about the delay, you guys/girls have made it another five pages! I understand that the writers were definitely more comfortable. But, with that given, Firefly still seemed to have more potential than Buffy did to start with. I was just using another Joss show to have another show to compare it with. I was trying to say that the show had plenty of life left in it. You know me, I can never just get it out directly.

Evening, Justin. It's been a busy day on here.

Yeah, that's what makes the movie so worth while. It basically rebuilds the series for new fans but respects the old and builds on the mythos of the show.

Evening to you too.
I've been waiting for Serenity for about 2 months now, ever since I first saw the trailer. That's what actually sparked something in me to go and buy the series on DVD. I'm already having Firefly-withdrawals. Heck, I'm just having Joss-withdrawals.
I guess I need to get some of the comics and novels, which I was supposed to have already done this summer.

LexLuthorMetropolis

The Serenity novel and screenplay should be coming out before the movie. So things will be looking up for our Firefly withdrawl shortly.

I found this:

Easter Egg: Go into the special fetures on Disk Four and go to the second page the icon should be on the gag reel press the up button on your remote the icon should dissapear press enter/play you should get a easter egg.

I've finished all the Extras now and the best commentary has to be the Joos/Natahan (sp?) from the pilot the series finally has to be the oddest its just Joss talking about himself. The gag reel  those mustashes (sp?).

See, I disagree because IMO Buffy and Firefly had the same potential. They were something new and different with a vast amount of mythology we didnt know about. Buffy had a lot of potential in its first season, and it lived up to it and surpassed it because of the various elements to the show.

I just really think potential wise they were equal because they are both something new, and they went/could go into different directions.

Thanks, TMLS

They are showing the movie's trailer on E! Coming Attractions. My sisters started to cheer when they saw the words "From the creator of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Angel'". Oh, we have Buffyverse pride :D.

Amazing CGI effects, and Serenity looks more detailed than anything.

One question I thought how in the heck did River learned martial arts?

That bounty hunter lived which was great. He scared the crap out of me.

TMLS' BROTHER
06-30-2005, 01:58 PM
You learn in one of the episodes that everything comes naturally to River so thats probably like how did she learn to shoot a gun okay

Summers
06-30-2005, 02:02 PM
I know I watched the episodes now. The gun came naturally because she said if she didnt see it would be easier. She used her telepathic skills to do that move.

But in the trailer River is kicking butt(which is cool) like a combo of Faith and Buffy together. I mean her skills were that of a high-esteemed artists. It was pure skill. Telepathic doesnt work that way. It assists you, but not in the skill.

TMLS' BROTHER
06-30-2005, 02:03 PM
I've seen the trailer maybe she picked up a few skills

Summers
06-30-2005, 02:06 PM
That wasnt few. It was Neo in The Matrix type moves. Highly skilled.

The only thing I can think of is that she read the arts of it, and picked some stuff up from the crew.

I barely saw a shot of Kaylee and Simon :(.

TMLS' BROTHER

Summers
06-30-2005, 02:11 PM

Yea, saw every single one.

I don't think Simons good enough for Kaylee I think she should be with Mal.

What did you think of the finale?

Summers
06-30-2005, 02:21 PM
Mal is more of a big brother to Kaylee to me. She's like her Xander sort to speak.

Mal and Inara is more seen as becoming a ship.

It was pretty good. I knew right away where River was in the ship, but it was funny to see the Bounty Hunter sqirm(sp?).

One part that really scared me was the Bounty's violation threat to Kaylee. That scared me because as a woman its one of those things you do not want happen to you :(.

TMLS' BROTHER
06-30-2005, 02:25 PM
squirm

I suppose. But shes a Pros. sorry companion. So I can't see her leaving here entire life just for him.
