I'm just wondering if any of you out there have seen 'The Machinist' (aka El Maquinista) starring Hollywood's lastest Batman: Christian Bale. I rented this movie yesterday from a local video store and to say that I was shocked is a very mild understatement.

Christian has always been one of my favorite actors. His amazing performance at such a young age in 'Empire of the Sun' (directed by Spielburg and also starring John Malkovich) had me instantly hooked on this actor.

Now, I've heard of actors that have gone through severe physical changes to prepare for their roles. I think of Toby Maguire in 'Seabiscuit', Matt Damon in 'Courage Under Fire', Adrien Brody in 'The Pianist' and Tom Hanks in 'Castaway'. But I was completely awed/frightened/dumbstruck when I learned that an already svelt Bale reduced his weight by 63 lbs--leaving him an emaciated 110-120 lbs. Personally, I can't imagine someone who is 6'1 being that thin and alive.

Once you get past the visual of his stick figure physique, you are left with an incredible, wonderfully written and directed film.

Have any of you seen this movie? What did you think about it as well as Christian's drastic transformation?
