Yeah -- now I'm the only one who's left to feel stupid  I changed it though, for the sake of future readers, and all mankind ;)

I'm working on an update - this is an important one, so I want to make it really good.

And yes, Kalabel will be making an appearance in Lana's dream.

Part 47:

Lana entered Isobel’s memories exactly where she’d left off. Kal-El was standing by the lake with Marguerite cradled in his arms, who was crying from being scooped up so quickly.

Isobel’s mouth was dry, and her heart pounded so hard it felt to be leaping from her chest. She at last found the strength to stand and go to them. Kal-El however, didn’t dare move. This wasn’t the first time someone had seen him use his powers. His gut told him to set Marguerite down, and super-speed away, never to make an appearance again—but his heart told him otherwise.

“I know that must’ve frightened you,” Kal-El said. “I’m very sorry.”

Isobel stepped up, taking a still screaming toddler from his arms and patting Marguerite on the back—soothing her the best she could while eyeing Kal-El in confusion. As soon as her daughter calmed, she said, “There’s certainly no reason to apologize—you just saved my child’s life," she said, attempting a smile, but her face was too tight from the shock of it all. "However, an explanation would be nice.”

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea,” Kal-El said, trying to avoid her gaze. “My, umm, gifts haven’t been too well received around here.”

Isobel couldn’t help but smile now, her previously rigid skin melting into softness. “Yes, I’d definitely say that anyone out of the ordinary is better off alone in the countryside,” she said. “So you’ve come to the right place.”

“You speak as though you’re hiding out here for that very reason,” Kal-El said, realizing he was being far too nosy, but she didn’t seem to mind.

“Indeed I am,” she answered, kneeling to the thick grass and keeping Marguerite in her lap.

Kal-El followed her lead, sitting across from Isobel so he could continue marveling at her face. “What happened?”

She saw his sincere concern, and it warmed her even further. No one had cared in so long, that it didn’t make a difference that she’d only known the man for only a couple of hours—she was going to tell him. “My mother and sisters are all witches,” she said matter-of-factly. “I’d tried to hide my heritage by marrying a nice, well-respected Parisian aristocrat, but it wasn’t long after my husband died that his protective ploys failed and the societal predators came calling.”

“Societal predators?” he asked. He’d had little experience with humans, but didn’t imagine them to eat their own.

“Witch hunters,” Isobel answered, running her fingers through Marguerite’s soft wispy hair. She was starting to drift off for an afternoon nap. “Those who feel it their life-calling to rid the world of anyone different than themselves.”

“Are you . . . a witch?” he asked. Since he’d heard about such people shortly after arriving on earth, he couldn’t figure out the reason for all the overreacting. Many people on Krypton had unique talents. But there, it was not only accepted, but celebrated. “It’s all right if you are—you’ve already seen that I have abilities others aren’t exactly fond of.”

“Yes, I have,” she said. “And no I’m not—a witch, that is.” She paused and waited for his reaction. When he didn’t seem overly relived, she decided to be completely honest with him. “At least I don’t think I am—my family believes I’m a bit of a dud, I guess—that I didn’t inherit the dark abilities they have. But the truth is, I have no interest in it whatsoever, so even if I have the core of witchcraft—I lack the passion to practice it.”

Kal-El nodded. “Passion seems to be quite important to . . . well, your people—of France,” he said, catching himself right before he said ‘humans’.

Isobel tipped her head, feeling a strange sense of jealousy. “Apparently you’ve met a few of our ladies.”

“Actually, a few too many,” Kal-el answered, with a charming smile that sent shocks through Isobel. “But none so beautiful and kind as yourself.”

Isobel was not the only one who was surprised by his sudden confession. They both turned away with reddened faces and began plucking blades of grass like it was the appropriate reaction for such awkward silence.

Then all at once, they both spoke . . . then stopped, motioning for the other to continue. “I apologize for being so forward, it’s just—” Kal-El started again, but he only finished by exhaling a deep breath.

“It’s been a very long time since someone told me I was beautiful—not since my husband and I were courting, five years ago,” she said, feeling a familiar emptiness within her. “But such sentiments changed after we married.” Isobel looked away again, having not admitted that to anyone and wondering what force had possessed her to do it now.

“How’s that possible?” he asked in awe, knowing he hadn’t been a mere moment in her presence without wanting to tell her . . . and even to kiss her, though he’d never felt that urge before. “It’s in my nature to be honest, but even if it weren’t, I could’ve never resisted my desire to tell you that you’re the most breathtaking woman I’ve ever seen . . . but it’s more than that. Witch or not, I feel very much as though I’m under your spell.”

Isobel shook her head slowly, a knot of emotion creeping through her that she tried to swallow down. “How could you feel such things? You’ve known me for mere hours.”

“Yes, and it took a far shorter time than that for me to feel so,” said Kal-El, wanting to reach out to her but not having the nerve.

Lana didn’t wake until Clark was already carrying her through the cool night breeze, toward a large wooden door. “Ahh, you woke me right during the good part,” she whispered with a genuine smile of bliss—the same emotion she’d been feeling right along with Isobel.

Clark stroked her hair. “Then go back to sleep—I’m just putting you into bed.”

She closed her eyes again, nestling up to Clark. Jimmy showed them through darkened rooms that Clark couldn’t resist using his x-ray vision to check out—and they were amazing. He couldn’t wait to explore in the morning. They eventually reached a large room with a king-sized bed in it, covered in a soft feathered duvet. He pulled back the covers and carefully placed Lana under them, kissing her cheek.

“Your room’s just across the hall—but I’m not saying you have to stay there,” Jimmy said, closing the door as he left.

Clark sat on the edge of the bed, not wanting to wake Lana if she’d drifted off again. There was a soft streak of moonlight coming through the window and dowsing her with a blanket of blue light. He stood after a few minutes of fighting the temptation to lie next to her.

Lana rolled over and grabbed his hand just as he was walking off. “Please don’t leave,” she said.

Quote from ajfinn:

You mean, you didn't notice that I missed yesterday?

No, I didn't, because I had to read the previous one very quickly the night before, & had to turn off my PC. So I didn't have time to respond. Yesterday morning, I got to re-read & savor the one from the night before & finally reply. So it felt like yesterday's update to me.:)

Thanks for trying to update daily, ajfinn. I know it's hard to do. I know I don't update daily - just whenever the next one is ready.
But I'm always watching for your updates. :)

Ha ha, I didn't mean you had to explain yourself, sorry ;) I was just joking that if I didn't update yesterday, and it wasn't noticed, then maybe I'd take a few more days off here and there.

Part 48:

Clark kept hold of Lana’s hand and sat back down on the edge of the bed. “I thought you said you were anxious to get back to your dream,” he said.

Lana smiled, the moonlight still making her glow. “I think that Kal-El and Isobel may have been more than casual barn-burning acquaintances.”

“What do you mean?” Clark asked.

Lana told him about her latest vision, and Clark found it both endearing and disturbing at the same time. “Not that I want you to start sleeping all day, but these dreams of yours are already helping me put some puzzle pieces together,” he said. “And don’t you find it interesting that three generations of our families somehow found one another.”

“Three?” she asked, not having a clue what he was talking about. “Isobel and Kal-El, you and me, and . . . ”

“Louise and Jor-El,” Clark said, just realizing that he hadn’t yet told her about the relic he’d found with his father’s memories—something he now realized acted as a thought projection disc.

Lana’s eyes became wide. “The drifter was your father?” she asked in awe. “I guess that’s why the sketch in the paper looked so much like you. I mean, I’d mentioned that possibility, but had put it entirely out of my mind.”

Clark brought her hand to his lips. “So why is it that three generations of our family members have somehow found one another?” he asked. “Gives the idea of us being meant to be together a whole new dimension, doesn’t it?”

Lana nodded, sitting up and snuggling under his arm. “I didn’t need two generations of ancestors to convince me of that,” she said, kissing his cheek. “But you’re right, I can’t help but wonder if there’s more to us being raised in the same small farm town than a little bit of luck.”

“Well, I don’t care how or why we met,” Clark said. “I’m just glad it happened.”

“Me too,” she said. “And hopefully Isobel’s memories will shed a bit more light on the mysteries that we have an uncanny knack of uncovering together.”

***

Clark stayed just a few minutes longer before heading across the hall to his room. And Lana drifted peacefully back to sleep, where she found Kal-El’s beautiful eyes staring back at her.

Isobel knew she should stand and excuse a man who dared be so bold with his words, she’d done so many times when she was younger. But with her added years, came added experience, and she knew a good, gentle man when she saw one—which wasn’t often. And she also knew a heart-stopping handsome man when she saw one—which happened even fewer times. Isobel started fanning herself with a hand. “Goodness, I better get Marguerite out of this hot sun,” she said, making a motion to stand.

Kal-El took the sleeping babe from her arms. “I’ll carry her, if you don’t mind,” he said.

Isobel smiled as they walked back toward the manor, thinking as she had many times, that it would be nice for Marguerite to have a father—but not the one she would have had. It was almost better that she was born after Isobel’s husband died—he was completely void of any affection for children, though he’d convinced Isobel of the opposite before they married.

Though Isobel could have taken Marguerite from Kal-El when they entered the kitchen, she instead motioned for him to follow her through the living area and back toward the bedrooms, where he carefully laid her down and covered her with a light blanket. Isobel gave him a look of intrigue, which he couldn’t help but notice.

When they stepped out of the room, making their way down the hall, Kal-El asked, “What were you thinking back there?”

Isobel stopped walking and faced him in the narrow hallway—their bodies less than a foot apart. “That’s none of your affair,” she said, trying to force a stern face, but failing miserably.

“It’s certainly my affair if the thought was about me,” he said, backed up against the wall and telling himself to stay there—as much as he wished to do otherwise—to be against her, which was entirely out of the question.

Now that was just plain arrogant, she thought. Irritating really, if he hadn’t looked so delightfully yummy when he said it. There felt to be a current of shocks between the small space that separated them. And all she wanted to do was fill it—with herself. “And, why, may I ask do you think my thoughts had anything to do with you?”

Kal-El gave a half-grin. “Because when you looked at me, your heart sped up.”

“My heart sped up? How would you know that?” Isobel asked with a smirk that made Kal-El give in to reckless abandon—something he never would've done on Krypton.

He put one hand on the wall just above Isobel’s shoulder, leaning closer. “I can hear really well when I try—and I was trying.”

Isobel didn’t know if he was serious or not, but she really didn’t care. It was the flirting that was sending her over the moon as chills shot through her. “And WHY were you trying to hear my heartbeat?”

“I’ll tell you, if you tell me what you were thinking,” he said, taking in a breath of her that made his legs of steel go completely weak.

“Agreed,” she said.

“I was listening to your heart because I wanted to know if you were scared of me, or if you were feeling something else entirely different than fear,” he said.

Isobel tipped her head, wishing she could think of an intelligent explanation for her racing pulse, but her mind seemed to have run out of rational thoughts the moment she saw him in her barn. “All right, I'll tell you . . . I was wondering if you had a family of your own—you just seemed to have put children to bed a few times before.” She flushed, wishing her voice hadn’t sounded so desperate for the answer she craved.

“Yes I do,” he said, smiling at Isobel’s crestfallen face. “A father and mother, and several more very controlling family members who feel nothing is more important than duty and obedience.”

Isobel nodded, noting a faint tinge of resentment in his voice. She moved a trembling hand to his face, where her fingers followed the curve of his cheekbone and jaw. “I’m sorry they’re so rough on you,” she said, trying to hide her relief that he didn’t have a wife and children of his own. “You’re, uhh, welcome to stay in my guesthouse rather than in the barn, if you’d like.”

“Thank you,” he said, breathless from her touch. “But I like your hayloft—there’s something comforting about it.”

“Very well,” she said, tipping her face up so he’d take her hint. “The hayloft is all yours—the sunsets are gorgeous from up there.”

“Gorgeous compared to what?” Kal-El asked, wanting more than anything to follow through with what she was offering him by coming closer—but still not daring after their short time together. “Because I’ve already seen the most alluring scene on this planet, and sunsets couldn’t hope to compare.”

Isobel pushed him back against the wall and was all over him before he even had a chance to take another breath. They kissed like they’d been doing so for years, though Kal-El had never even come close to such intimacy, and Isobel had never truly enjoyed a single kiss in her lifetime.

Lana was awakened in the morning by a terrifying noise, a familiar one that would haunt her forever. She was sitting straight up in bed, her heart racing on account of two different stimuli, when Clark super-sped to her side, knowing the arrival of the helicopter would bring back horrible memories for her.

This story is getting more complicated with every update! three generations of kryptonians going to earth?? Wow!! Wonder what they have in store for us puny earthlings (although them coming here isn't that strange. I'd be addicted to a solar system as well if said solar system's yellow sun gave me such amazing powers! ;) )

Part 49:

“It’s okay, Lana,” Clark said, wrapping his arms around her. “It’s only a Daily Planet helicopter.” He’d already used his x-ray vision to check out who was in the chopper, and the guy—including the contents he brought along, looked far from threatening.

“Who is it?” she asked, trying to convince her pulse to slow down.

Clark shrugged. “I’m not sure, but he brought food—so I’m putting him in the friend column for now.”

They walked hand in hand down the hallway, almost forgetting about the helicopter as they gawked at their new hideaway. “Talk about posh,” Lana said. “Is there any way we can just stay here forever?”

Clark scooped up Lana and tossed her onto an extra wide sectional couch, which was as comfy as a giant marshmallow. “Forever sounds good—real good,” he said, bouncing next to her and resting his head on her lap as he looked up at her. “You dreamt about Kal-El and Isobel again, didn’t you?”

“How’d you guess?” she asked, running her fingers through his messy morning hair, which she couldn’t help but love just as much as his normal style—maybe even more.

“I don’t know—you get this funny look in your eyes, like you’re looking at me—but not really at ME,” he said. “You know, like you see me as Kal-El for a few minutes.”

He was surprised when Lana actually nodded her head, admitting it. “I guess I do—especially after a vision like the last one, where I wouldn’t mind if the two of us actually WERE Kal-El and Isobel,” Lana said.

“For some reason, I never imagined you saying that,” Clark said with a smile.

“And I never imagined I’d see what I just saw,” she said, going on to explain all the delicious details. She ended with, “Seriously, it was hot!”

Clark arched his brow. “Is he as good of a kisser as I am?” he asked.

Lana wasn’t sure how to answer that question, so she explained as best she could. “It’s not like I’m in Isobel’s body when I experience her memories—I just feel her emotions, and know her thoughts,” she said. “And even though it was a little strange at first to see him with Isobel—because he looks just like you, I had to remind myself that Isobel and I look quite a bit a like as well. So with that in mind, I just started to enjoy the show.”

“Well, that dude and I definitely don’t have the same personality,” Clark said. “It took me years to gather the courage to kiss you. And he managed it in a couple of hours.”

“Yeah, but like I said, she didn’t really give him a choice,” Lana said.

Clark couldn’t help but think what he did. “Then I give you my permission to throw me up against any wall you choose—at any time.”

“My, my, you two are quite the passionate ones, aren’t you?” asked a man’s hearty voice from the opposite side of the couch.

Lana turned, and Clark sat up, both with beet red faces.

The man bellowed with robust laughter. “Little early in the day for such talk,” he said, stepping closer and looking down on them. “Did Jimmy forget to mention that we have more than a dozen bedrooms in this place? We usually use the couch for entertaining guests—but not the type of entertainment you two were suggesting.”

Both Clark and Lana’s mouths were completely hung open from the man’s barefaced comments. Who dared say those things to someone he didn’t even know?

The man was thinking the very same thing—he should introduce himself. Sticking out his long lanky arm, he said. “The name’s Barry Olsen, I’m Jimmy’s dad.”

Clark stood at once to shake his hand, completely mortified for not showing him more respect. “Clark Kent, sir,” he said. “And you’re more than just ‘Jimmy’s dad.’ I had an entire business unit in school about your empire.”

Mr. Olsen had the personality of a silly school girl, who just couldn’t stop giggling at every single comment that was made—no matter the content. “What? Your teacher ran out of trash to dish out about Luthor Corp? You know, we have a saying in my board room about our favorite little fertilizer giant—‘If it stinks and it’s full of crap, it must be a Luthor!’” He doubled over from his own joke, but Clark and Lana—as much as they found it amusing, as well as true—could only smile in uncomfortable amazement.

“That’s enough, Dad,” Jimmy said, entering the room with splotchy red cheeks. “Sorry, guys, I should’ve warned you about him.” Jimmy put his arm around his still laughing father, grinning as though he was kidding, but Clark and Lana weren’t so sure.

“Oh, we’ve had a nice little chat,” Lana said, standing to join them now that her legs were a little more stable from the shock of the scene. “Didn’t we?”

“Yes indeed, yes indeed,” said Mr. Olsen, grabbling Lana’s hand and shaking it so vigorously that her whole body bounced around. This guy wasn’t just a barrel of monkeys—he was an entire zoo. Hyenas included.

Mr. Olsen turned his attention back to Jimmy. “Where’s that super-star reporter of yours?” he asked. “I’m dying to meet her at last!”

“She’s overseeing the unloading of the helicopter—” Jimmy started to explain.

Mr. Olsen’s smile disappeared—making him look like an entirely different person. “Shame on you, son. If she’s carrying a single box of Twinkies—”

“No worries, Pop,” Jimmy said, waving for everyone to follow him. “Your ‘super-star’ reporter’s typing fingers will be perfectly intact for her next big scoop!”

When they entered the massive kitchen, Chloe was directing two men—still wearing helicopter headsets, where to put food-stuffed boxes. “Oh, hey,” she said, turning around with her darling Sullivan smile, and nervously fixing her hair, then smoothing the wrinkled shirt she’d slept in.

Mr. Olsen made a beeline to her. “What a pleasure!” he said, his grin so wide his thin cheeks disappeared all together. Chloe held out her hand but Mr. Olsen ignored it—giving her a gigantic bear hug. “Welcome to the family!”

Jimmy’s hand flew to his face and he turned away, shaking his head and mumbling something.

“The Daily Planet family, that is,” Mr. Olsen said. “Though I wouldn’t mind if—” he’d just noticed Jimmy’s reaction, and cleared his throat. “Well, anyway, when Jimmy told me you three needed a safe haven, I was more than happy to provide one. That’s why we built this place, after all! Wouldn’t be any fun if we didn’t use it for something dangerously covert, now would it?”

Everyone shook their heads—including Mr. Olsen. Clark eyed Chloe suspiciously though—what exactly had she told the Olsen men about their purpose for being there?

Since Chloe could read Clark like a front page news story, she said, “Thanks, Mr. Olsen. I’m sure Jimmy told you how we’re all in a bit of trouble because we reported the stolen goods from China that Lex had in his safe.”

“That dirty, no good . . . ” Mr. Olsen’s smile had disappeared again, and his face reddened as he spouted insults about Lex and his just as rotten father, Lionel. “They’re half-demon—mark my word—the Inquisitor will do an article on them one day!”

Everyone laughed, then kind of looked around at each other like they, again, weren’t sure how serious to take the comment. “I’ve told my father that you aren’t in need of the typical type of protection,” Jimmy said. “And he’s offered to help in any way he can—man power, funding—whatever you ask for.”

Clark and Lana’s eyes widened as they smiled, neither having any words besides a genuine, “Thank you!” And Chloe was grinning as though she’d just won the Pulitzer Prize.

Part 50: (Whew! Thanks for everyone’s continued interest in this story!)

Mr. Olsen gave a loud clap of his hands, then rubbed them back and forth like he wanted to get down to business. “First things first—I need to find myself an apron,” he said, walking behind the enormous granite countertop, and starting to pull out drawers. “Who wants waffles?”

There was a chorus of approval, then Jimmy joined his dad, searching through cupboards. “Maybe we should make sure we have a waffle iron first,” Jimmy said. “It’s been a while since we’ve been here.”

“Of course we have a waffle iron,” Mr. Olsen said, sounding as though Jimmy had completely lost his mind. “Dear heavens, boy, have I not taught you anything?”

“Oh, yes—how’d I forget—waffles are an essential food group all of their own,” Jimmy said with a smile, at last finding the waffle iron and holding it up like it was a rare gem—to be worshiped and adored.

“Splendid!” Mr. Olsen cried, tying a white lacy apron around himself. The onlookers had to turn away so he wouldn’t see their obvious amusement. “Chloe, dear—I’ll put you in charge of the iron.” She stepped over, and by the time he was finished explaining the importance of the right shade of brown, and the correct amount of steam—she was terrified of messing up.

Mr. Olsen went down the line of helpers, giving them each ‘critical’ assignments for breakfast. Talk about micromanaging, Clark thought with a grin. But this guy was legendary for whipping up much more than a mean slab of waffles. Clark thought he’d just watch and learn from the master—that was until he was given the task of setting the table.

“Uhh, wouldn’t one of the girls be better at that?” he asked, while being shown how to properly fold the napkins into fans and put them in wine glasses.

Mr. Olsen shook his head, appearing to be in pain. “Kent, Kent—really, how do you expect to ever understand women unless you get in touch with your feminine side?” he asked with all the seriousness of a psychologist. He then handed Clark the remaining pile of napkins, gave him a sturdy pat on the back, then went back behind the counter.

Lana moved her chopping board, knife, fruit, and platter closer to Clark so they could talk as they did their respective jobs. Mr. Olsen kept Chloe and Jimmy’s half-attention as he lectured them on the intricate art of mixing batter.

As Lana peeled and chopped, Clark set out the plates and silverware—procrastinating the most delicate part until the end. He threw down a napkin after his forth attempt at ‘fanning it just right.’ “Stupid thing,” he whispered, looking to Lana in exasperation. “I can lift a dump truck, fly half-way around the world, and start a bonfire with my eyes—but NAPKINS completely stump me!”

Stepping over to the table, Lana pretended to take pity on him. “Okay, sweetheart, just take a deep breath,” she said calmly, putting the napkin back in his hands. “As Mr. Olsen said, it’s very important to get in touch with your feminine side.”

Clark gave her one of his crooked smirks. “Lana, if I HAD a feminine side, I’d do everything possible to HIDE it.”

Lana snuck a peek over her shoulder to make sure Mr. Olsen wasn’t watching, then secretly started folding the napkins. “Can you handle carrying them over to each glass and putting them in there without making a mess of them?” she whispered.

He was more than happy to do his best. “Nothing like some good old-fashioned napkin smuggling.”

“Yes, that’s me,” Lana said. “Queen of the table-setting black market.”

“I always knew there was more to you than meets the eye,” Clark said, coming back for another napkin and pretending to fold it with a pleasant smile when Mr. Olsen glanced over. “Hey, I think I’m a natural at this,” Clark called to him with a proud nod.

Lana rolled her eyes, trying not to lose it. “Now, maybe you should tutor ME on lifting dump trucks.”

“It’s all in the legs,” he said, coming behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist. “Just be careful not to strain your back.”

She tipped her head and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “It’s much the same with fanning napkins,” she said. “Except that it looked like you were straining much more than your back—poor guy.”

When they were all finally sitting around the table, taking in the fresh warm scent of waffles and melted butter, Clark’s face fell when he saw everyone grab for their napkins and toss them on their laps. “Okay, no one even stopped to appreciate the fine job I did at fanning those napkins—so what’s the point?”

Mr. Olsen didn’t hesitate. “The point, my boy, is in the presentation,” he said. “Do you think a chef says to himself, ‘Oh, what’s the use in making the meal look nice? It’s all going to be chewed up anyway?’ Not on your life! And besides, I wanted to see how long it took you to humble yourself enough to ask your girlfriend for help.” He gave a knowing smile, as though he was the cleverest man on the whole freakin’ planet.

Clark and Lana looked at one another with guilty grins. “Umm, well . . . actually, Lana kind of takes care of all the feminine issues in our relationship,” Clark said. “About as close as I get to stuff like that is moving furniture.”

“Are you telling me that you’re all muscles and no heart?” asked Mr. Olsen, using his usual amount of tact.

Lana shook her head. “No, no, you’ve got him all wrong,” she said. “He really is a very sensitive guy. I wouldn’t want him to be any different than he is.”

Clark beamed, squeezing Lana’s hand.

“Has he ever written you a poem?” Mr. Olsen asked straight faced, as he worked on a mouthful of waffles.

Clark started choking. “Uhh—”

Chloe was having the time of her life watching Clark get drilled like this. Like she’d told him before, he had to get over his naïve little farm boy routine and kick it up a notch in the romance department.

“I didn’t think so,” said Mr. Olsen, with an obvious tone of discontent. “Well, here’s your chance then—tell your Juliet just how you feel. Give us a line or two.”

“Of poetry?” Clark asked, gulping. “Here? In front of everyone?”

“You have to learn to think on your toes if you’re going to really please the ladies, Kent,” Mr. Olsen said. “Now, let’s hear it.”

Lana whispered, “You don’t have to—” but Clark didn’t even notice, he wanted to get it over with.

And so, out came the most horrible attempt at poetry known to mankind—human or otherwise. “Lana, Lana, why oh why . . . did you kiss another boy, and make me cry?”

Mingled among the hysterical laughter, Clark heard, “Nice one, Clark,” coming from Lana as she slapped his leg with the back of her hand. “Maybe you could tell them something REALLY embarrassing about me now.”

I don't intend for this to become a regular thing, but I recall someone mentioning somewhere (don't ask where) that I owed her a poem, and since Cardinal mentioned Robert Frost I dredged up a poem that instantly popped into my mind as I read the name. I can (and will) do better (with something of my own for a change :p), but this one's just to soothe the savage Amy until then :p ;)

Stopping by words on a restless evening.

Whose words these are I think I know.
Her books are published elsewhere , though;
She just might see me stopping here
To watch her words relieve my woe.

My little brain must think it's queer
To stop and take it in so clear
Between these words and other sake
The brightest thoughts still drawing near.

It gives my senses a good shake
To ask if there's some mistake.
My only other thought's of sleep
Of easy rest and downy flake.

The words are lovely, bright, and deep,
And I have promises to keep,
So miles to read before I sleep,
So miles to read before I sleep

Part 51: (Yep - a real live update :) )

“Just as I suspected, Kent, you have an awful lot to learn about women!” said Mr. Olsen, slapping his leg as he hooted with laughter and turning the color of a blistering sunburn.

Lana suddenly felt more embarrassed for Clark than she did herself. She was leaning in to comfort him, when he also did the same—they bumped heads and started laughing along with everyone else. “I’m so sorry, Lana,” Clark whispered. “I swear I wasn’t thinking about anything real, I was just trying to rhyme words. I’m an idiot—I know.”

“Only when it comes to poetry,” she said, kissing his forehead as though their sudden encounter had wounded him. She then turned to Mr. Olsen. “Clark may not come across as the most sensitive of guys, but in Smallville, he’s saved both mine and Chloe’s lives countless times—along with about half the town. I don’t think the world will ever know another man as caring and selfless as Clark Kent.”

Mr. Olsen stopped laughing, his cheery expression falling like a landslide. “You’re very much in love with him, aren’t you, Miss Lang?”

Lana nodded, looking up at Clark. “Yes, very much.”

“Then, my apologies, Kent,” he said. “No poetry is needed—this girl of yours is already captured—hook, line and sinker.” He said it as though he was putting a seal of corporate approval on their relationship.

Clark smiled. “Thank heavens,” he said. “I’d probably lose her for good if I made another attempt at it.”

“I’m afraid you may lose ALL of us,” Chloe said, for the first time getting chills as she watched the two of them together. What was happening to her? The past few days, she’d come to accept the inevitable, but now she was just plain bursting for them to be together. “But as Lana said, you’ve always been there when I needed you most, so we’ll forgive your sad attempt at spouting Shakespeare.”

Since Mr. Olsen stopped speaking, Lana’s attention had remained on him—watching something peculiar. If she wasn’t mistaken, his chin was starting to quiver, and his eyes fill with tears.

And then Mr. Olsen confirmed it. “Oh, my . . . how much you two remind me of when Jimmy’s mother and I first fell in love,” he said, wiping a crocodile tear from his cheek. “We couldn’t stop looking at one another.”

Clark and Lana only nodded at the solemn moment. Chloe gave Jimmy a strange look, and he buried his face in his hands.

Mr. Olsen continued. “For every man, there is a woman who gives him the desire to reach for the stars—be the man he couldn’t have been without her,” he said, sniffing and wiping. “Without my wife . . . my dear Patty . . . the reason I draw breath . . . ” It was obvious that he was on the verge of sobbing, and both Clark and Lana were completely tearing up, trying hard to hold it in. “Oh, how I MISS her . . . ”

Jimmy bumped Clark, gaining Lana’s attention as well. “Uhh, guys. My mom’s been in Aruba for the last week with her sisters,” he said. “Dad just has a really difficult time when she’s not around.”

Clark and Lana both felt like going from the depths of sorrow to hysterical laughter in a matter of moments, but that would’ve been terribly rude—Mr. Olsen was still weeping. Instead they just looked at one another with wide eyes, and gripped hands.

Mr. Olsen excused himself, saying he had to make a ‘desperate phone call to his sweetheart’.

“I gotta get me some of that,” Chloe whispered with a gentle smile, then glanced away when Jimmy’s eyes darted to her.

“Yeah, it used to make me sick to watch them when I was a kid,” Jimmy said. “But now that I know how rare it is to find a relationship like they have, it’s kinda cool. I mean—definitely embarrassing sometimes—like now, for instance, but still something I want for myself.”

Clark would’ve announced that his parents were similar to Jimmy’s but didn’t want to put Chloe or Lana on the spot to talk about their own parents. Clark had already shoved his foot in his mouth with the poetry, he didn’t want to start gagging on it.

After further chit-chat, everyone cleared the table and started doing dishes together. Mr. Olsen finally re-entered as a completely composed, new man. “All right—back to business!” he said, waving a notepad in his hand. “I’ve got a lunch appointment in two hours, so we need to focus on what you kids need to get that scummy Luthor off your backs.”

“Not here, Dad,” Jimmy said. “Let’s head back to the Grand Hang-out.”

“Ah, yes, of course,” Mr. Olsen said, spinning on his heel, and waving for everyone to follow him out of the kitchen.

“The Grand Hang-out?” Clark said under his breath, with a sideways glance to Lana.

Jimmy heard him and looked back. “It’s where my Dad found you two this morning,” he said with a smile. “What else would you call a room like that?”

Clark shrugged, knowing Mr. Olsen well enough by now to realize everything was ‘grand’ to him. As well as very original, in every sense. “The name fits perfectly.”

Not having the helicopter and Lana’s sexy morning hair on his mind this time, Clark saw that the room really was a ‘hang-out’ on the grandest scale. The large room was stuffed with plush sectionals, a theater screen, dart boards, a pool table, table tennis . . . the entertainment was endless. Yeah, this was definitely a cool place to hide out from Lex. He couldn’t help but put his arm around Chloe and give her a squeeze. “Good find, Chlo . . . the guy, I mean,” he said, when Jimmy was out of ear-shot.

She winked at him. “Yeah, I know.”

When they’d all settled down among the facing couches, Mr. Olsen took up his notepad and pen and began to write. “First, I need the correct spelling of your full names—that’s critical.”

“Why?” Jimmy asked.

His dad gave him a look that said ‘I’m the expert here, son’. “Because you’ll all be on flights to LA this afternoon, and I need to make the reservations—with your credit cards, mind you. I’ll reimburse the cost right now.” He reached into his pocket and started pulling out bills from his wallet.

Everyone stiffened and looked around. That was not in their plan. They didn’t want to run from Lex, just fix the situation.

“You won’t REALLY be off to LA, you dunderheads,” Mr. Olsen said, waving away the silly notion. “But if Lex is looking for you, he’ll tap into the flights out of Metropolis—and there you’ll be—on your way to sunny California!”

Everyone was giving impressed nods—except for Chloe, who was too shrewd to agree so quickly. “But we can’t just make the reservations,” she said. “We’ll have to get ON the plane if it’s to be believable.”

“Ehhhhh,” Mr. Olsen said. “Not technically—but we’ll make it look like you did. You’ll be checked in and everything. We’ll even tag some bags for you and send them through security—to be picked up by some acquaintances of mine.” When Chloe’s smirk didn’t let up, Mr. Olsen leaned on his knees and took a deep breath. “Chloe, dear, I hope this doesn’t burst your opinion of me—but I haven’t gotten where I am by staying in a tidy little box. I have friends who . . . let’s just say, have connections—the president of a particular airline, for example—who will ensure you’re checked onto that flight, whether you make a physical appearance or not.” He then beamed a clever smile, so pleased with himself that he was bouncing in his over-stuffed seat.

“Sweet,” was all Chloe muttered, giving the delayed nod everyone else was repeating from before.

After they’d handed over their driver’s licenses for Jimmy to run off and copy, in what Clark thought must’ve been the ‘Grand Copier Room,’ Mr. Olsen asked them to fully explain their situation with Lex Luthor.

Clark gestured to Chloe so he wouldn’t mess up anything she’d already invented. She turned a deep shade of pink, returning Clark’s expectant glare, then started. “Okay, well . . . here’s the truth.”

Super update, as usual, ajfinn - though that seemed like the longest wait for an update from you. I must have checked over 10 times hoping for an update.... I guess you have me spoiled. ;)
After reading this:

Unless I am abducted by a spaceship, the next update will be posted sometime today.

If the spaceship is from Krypton, however, and contains clones of Clark Kent, I will be happily detained indefinitely. I'm sure you'll all understand.

...I was beginning to think you were abducted by a spaceship from Krypton, full of Clark clones! - Ha - Ha!

You guys had me paranoid there for a minute. I started second guessing myself, wondering if I'd missed a day I didn't know about. Well, here's your proof - I'm still your "daily" fan fic poster :D

Update 50 Time stamp: Yesterday 12:19 AM
Update 51 Time stamp: Today 03:34 PM

Okay, so yesterday's was just after midnight, but that still means I cared enough to post the day before, no matter how sleep deprived I was, right? But yes, I've struggled the past week or two to get the writing in, and many of you know why. My friend is doing better now though, and so I'll be home more.

Oh, and good greif, I'm used to writing novels where I can edit things that don't end up working out. With this, if I post it, it's set in stone, so yeah . . . I'm having to think through the scenes really carefully so I don't add something I'll regret.

Man, you guys are tough on me! :\

Still love ya though. And how could I ever feel anything but love from a Clana group, huh?

Part 52:

Truth was a complicated thing, Lana thought—having been the victim of endless lies the past few years, from the man who she knew loved her with all the depth of his soul. And she’d had to tell a fair share of lies herself lately. All for the same purpose—to protect those whose lives would be forever altered by the truth.

She had all the confidence in the world, though, that Chloe could spin little white lies into gold. Or would she even have to lie at all?

“You see, Mr. Olsen,” Chloe began. “Lex has a few problems, on different levels, really. We’ve all tried to help him, but there’s only so much a person can do before it puts their own life at risk—and unfortunately, that's exactly what we've done.”

“So, is it true that the untouchable Lex Luthor has really lost his mind?” asked Mr. Olsen. “I mean, the rumors have been circulating ever since he was rescued from that island.”

Chloe nodded with a glum face, feeling genuine pity for Lex. “We all thought he’d recovered, but there was an accident a few months ago at Luthor Corp, and he’s never been the same,” she said. “Somehow it had a Jekyll and Hyde affect on him, only Jekyll no longer seems to be making appearances.”

“Ahhh, so that’s what happened,” Mr. Olsen said, deep in thought. “So all we have left is the evil Mr. Hyde—thirsty for the blood of both friend and foe.”

“Exactly,” Clark said, wishing he didn’t fit into BOTH those categories. “So, we’re hoping to reverse the damage—which is going to take some serious technical know-how to recreate the accident.”

“Done,” Mr. Olsen said. “I’ll hire any expert you need—at any price.”

Jimmy cleared his throat. “Uhh . . . what kind of incident are we talking about recreating?” he asked. “As long as I have the notes from the first time around, I should be able to figure it out—and hopefully see how to reverse it.”

Clark was skeptical, but Chloe raised her brows. “You know, the fewer people we get involved with this, the better,” she said, then looked back to Clark whose doubt she fully anticipated. “Jimmy’s good at more than just computers. He’s a genius at ANYTHING scientific, trust me on this.”

Clark nodded. “It’s worth a try,” he said. “But how do we get the notes?”

Mr. Olsen started sniggering. “Oh, if they still exist, we’ll find them,” he said with a final snort.

“Connections,” Jimmy whispered, giving them a nod, as though the single word spoke paragraphs of information, which it did.

“And there’s one more thing,” Clark said. “We’ll have to get into the Luthor mansion. We need to do some serious alterations of the security footage.”

Chloe put her hand on Jimmy’s knee, then removed it quickly. “We’re, uhh,” she started, trying to recover from her unplanned move on him—in front of three other people. “We’ll need to stage a break-in to replace the footage that shows it was actually Clark and myself in Lex’s study—busting into his vault to confirm he had the Chinese artifacts.”

“You three aren’t the typical small town kids, are you?” Mr. Olsen asked, quite impressed.

“Unfortunately, no,” Lana answered. “We’ve had our fair share of adventure—enough to last a lifetime.”

Clark reached over and held her hand. “And that’s something I really hope will change in the future,” he said, knowing the odds of that were grim. “It would be nice to settle down . . . umm . . . I mean . . . for life to settle down.” By the time he caught the marriage implication, Lana’s eyes had widened, and Chloe was giving him a smirk that made him want to run for cover.

But their reactions were nothing compared to Mr. Olsen’s, of course. “Wait a minute there, Kent! There’s no need to hide your intentions,” he said, happy as a popsicle toting toddler. “You certainly weren’t shy about your intentions this morning—something about a wall, if I remember . . . ” he trailed off, laughing, then continued. “See, that’s the problem with most men—we’re more than comfortable when it comes to the physical side of our relationships, but it’s what’s in our heart that we have trouble communicating. Just say it, boy—tell Ms. Lang that you want to—”

“Dad! Seriously, stop!” Jimmy snapped. “Whatever Clark wants to tell Lana is HIS business. It’s private! It’s—”

“It’s all right,” Clark said, trying to stop the conversation before it got out of hand. He didn’t dare look at Lana, sure her face was feeling as warm as his own. “I think it’s well established that I’m missing an emotional chip somewhere, but I’m working on it. I’ll get there.”

Get where? Lana thought, looking out the window towards a lake. She also didn’t dare make eye contact with anyone, especially not Clark. Get where? She repeated to herself. Was he saying that he’d eventually get around to talking to her about marriage? Or had she completely misinterpreted that whole conversation—if it could be called that—to mean what she wanted it to mean? She hated second guessing things, and she hadn’t had to do that with Clark the past few days.

After a few final arrangements to use their credit cards for their fake trip to LA—including a three day pass to Disneyland, the air cleared, and Mr. Olsen was back to his wide grins.

“All right then, I must be off. Jimmy has access to an account with limitless funds for this little escapade of yours, so have a bit of fun while you’re at it,” Mr. Olsen said, standing and stretching his long limbs. “Along with the food, I’ve brought some gadgets that will help you communicate with me, as well as one another, whenever you need to. They’re connected through the most advanced satellites, so they’ll work anywhere in the world. I suspect Luthor has your cell phones tapped into by now, so don’t use them.”

“I turned mine off when we left Metropolis last night,” Chloe said, just then remembering the eerie message Lex left her.

“Of course you did,” Mr. Olsen said, stepping over to Chloe and giving her a full embrace. “You’re brilliant, you know. We’ve all got our eye on you—sure you’ll be the best reporter we’ve ever had.” He hit his head with his hand. “Oh gracious, did I forget to tell you?” Chloe was still too stunned by his compliments to answer. “You’ve been given our journalism scholarship to Met-U! It covers all expenses—books, housing, tuition,” he said, then gave her a little nudge. “Even a date or two in the McLaren with a handsome bachelor I happen to know.”

“Thank you so much, Mr. Olsen,” Chloe said, finally finding her voice. “I had no idea I’d get such a perk for working for you!”

He nodded, looking over to Jimmy with pride. “Yes, he’s a fine man indeed.”

Jimmy laughed, giving his dad a slap on the back. “She was talking about the scholarship, Pops!”

Mr. Olsen looked to be in shock as he glanced to Chloe. “Oh, beg your pardon, I’m sorry.”

“Actually, I was talking about both,” she said, chancing a glance to Jimmy, whose cheeks lit up.

“My, my, that gives a whole new meaning to ‘friends with benefits,’” Mr. Olsen hooted. “And we don’t have bad medical insurance, either.” He waved as he said his giddy farewells, fighting off the urge—as he glanced back to Clark and Lana—to state how beautiful their children would be.

Once he’d disappeared, Jimmy exhaled and wiped his forehead. “Man, I didn’t think I was going to survive that!”

Chloe put her hand on his arm. “He’s an amazing guy,” she said, smiling. “A little eccentric, but amazing.”

“A little?” Jimmy asked. Everyone laughed, but not too much because Jimmy was embarrassed enough as it was. He and Chloe offered to go finish up in the kitchen, which left Clark and Lana sitting alone on the couch.

“Wow, that guy is really somethin’” Clark said, trying to avoid what he knew was on Lana’s mind.

“Yeah.”

“He, uhh, has the gift of gab, to say the least,” Clark said, putting his arm around her so she’d loosen up a bit.

She melted into him, wishing that she had the courage Clark lacked at times. They could both be such chickens. “You dodged his bullets really well,” she said, trying to sound lighthearted. “But I guess you’ve had plenty of practice with bullets, haven’t you?” She knew what she said was stupid, but she didn’t know what else to say.

Clark kissed the top of her head. “I’ve been struck by dozens of slugs, but that’s nothing compared to hard hitters like Mr. Olsen.”

“And having friends like Chloe and myself is probably good practice as well,” Lana said, still unsure of her idle words.

There was silence as both released heavy breaths, then Clark took Lana’s face in his hands and kissed her. “I love you, Lana,” he said. “And I never again want you to think that anything I say or do contradicts that.”

Lana was taken aback that Clark’s eyes were suddenly glossy. “I won’t,” she said, worried. “What’s the matter, Clark?”

Clark paused, swallowing down the knot he’d been fighting. “I have something on my mind that I need answers to,” he said. “And it will probably take me most of the day to find them.”

“Can I come with you?” Lana asked, afraid to hear his answer.

“Sorry, it’s something I have to do on my own,” he said. “But I promise to tell you every detail tonight—even if the answers don’t turn out favorable for us.”

“For us?” Lana asked. “Clark, I thought we were past those questions.”

“Almost,” he said, bringing Lana to his chest and wishing he didn’t have to keep so much from her.

Yep, here we all are at 2 a.m. All the authors working on our fics, right? Well, I wrote my next few updates out by hand, since there was no PC available to me, so now I'll have to wait til tomorrow or Wednesday to type & post them. Anyway, Ha-Ha, ajfinn - What an "update". I'm sure you're working on something much, much better for us, right? Talk to y'all tomorrow.

"I didn't expect you to." You know it hurts my feelings when you say things like that:( :\ Working on my story? Maybe:D , but i need the inspiration to do it. Afinn isn't inspiring me. She keeps confusing me with these people named clark and Lana. Club house? So, that's what that sign is there for. *Looks at the sign stating THE CLANA CLUBHOUSE.*

Oh my freakin' heck! We ARE all fanfic writers (those of us who are making my thread into a 'clubhouse' at 2am!) What a sad life we all live.

Anyway, no more chatting.

Just so no one feels "left out" I just started a thread called "CLANA Fix Clubhouse" so we can all chat about fanfics outside of the actual story threads.

I don't know how to post a flippin' link, so go to:

then Fanfiction Discussions
then click on the link I started. :D

Part 53:

Lana was hesitant to let go of Clark, gripping onto the back of his shirt as he continued to embrace her. “Clark, whatever answers you find, I can handle it, okay?” she said. “Just don’t shut me out.”

“I won’t,” he said, kissing the soft skin of her neck. “From now on, anything that I know, you’ll know. I swear it.”

She nodded, fighting back the burning of her eyes. Why was she so freaked out all of a sudden? It was like this inner alarm went off inside her when Clark was worried about something he was afraid to share. “Can you tell me where you’re going?”

“Of course,” he said, explaining where he was off to, but not disclosing his purpose—not until he had the answers, he said. “I’ll take one of those cell phones with satellite reception that Mr. Olsen brought—so you’ll be able to reach me whenever you want.”

Lana gave a gentle smile, pulling back at last so he could see it. “Does the phone project tangible images so I can reach out and TOUCH you whenever I want as well?” she asked, trying to sound flirtatious.

He kissed her, several times. “No, but I want that kind of desire to build up for when I get back.”

“Then you better not plan on dinner right when you return,” she said. “Because food will be the last thing on my mind.”

“Good,” he said. “A man can’t live on bread alone.”

***

“Professor Willowbrook will see you now,” said the secretary outside of the professor’s university office.

Clark stood from a waiting room chair, unable to shake the tension from his muscles. He stepped into Joseph Willowbrook’s office and smiled instantly when he saw the great Native American leader in front of him—the man who’d provided so many interesting answers for him in the past. “Hi, Professor.”

“Naman, it’s so good to see you,” he said. “I’ve been hoping you’d stop by.”

“You have?” Clark asked, mulling over the possible reasons for that.

Joseph nodded, his face serious. “You’re a grown man now, with a destiny to fulfill,” he said. “And I’ve been anxious to see if you’ve yet decided to accept it.”

Clark exhaled a deep, meaningful, breath. “I have.”

Joseph took a hold of Clark’s shoulders. “Then you will not only be a warrior for our people, but for the whole world,” he said. “Now how can I assist you in your important work?” He gestured for Clark to sit on a small couch with him.

“It’s not so much about my destiny as Naman that’s worrying me today,” he said. “It’s more about my future as Clark Kent.”

The professor looked confused, but nodded for Clark to continue.

“The first night we met, you told me about the origins of your people,” Clark said. “Would you mind going over those details with me again?”

Joseph straightened up, knowing one day, these questions would come. “Our legends say that five hundred years ago, a man came from the stars to do the bidding of his ancestors, and make preparations for a future descendant of his to return when we needed him most,” he said, looking at Clark with a sincerity that made Clark shudder with pressure. “This man who came from the stars was distracted by his duty, so the legend says, by a young Native American woman of an Eastern tribe. The affair was forbidden by both her people, and his as well. They fled further west, residing in a cave for a length of years—which I now believe is the one we are both so familiar with—until the man was ordered to return to his home in the stars or suffer the consequences of hurting the ones he loved.”

That sounded all too familiar, and Clark shook his head at the cruel means Kryptonians used to coerce their own into obedience. “Besides the woman he was with, who else was there for him to love?” Clark asked, holding his breath.

“As I’ve told you before, it was out of this forbidden affair that the Kawatche people were born,” he said, fully expecting this to be Clark’s intention for asking. “It is told that they had two children, a son and a daughter—who both became skinwalkers.”

Clark closed his eyes, dropping his heavy head. “But was it because of the combination of their conflicting DNA, or because of the ‘special green stones’ Kyla told me were brought from the stars?” he asked, then looked up again with hope. “Because as I’ve already told you, the meteor rocks have had plenty of strange effects on people in Smallville.”

Professor Willowbrook stood slowly, then walked to a picture and took it off the wall, revealing a safe behind it. “After our discussion about meteor rocks, I took the liberty of having one compared against the only stone that remains from our ancestors—”

“You HAVE one of the stones?” Clark asked, standing in shock. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Joseph turned around, his chin lifted. “Because you were not ready, Naman. You have not been ready to hear anything I have told you until now,” he said.

“So why waste your efforts—casting pearls before swine?” Clark said, bowing his head with humility. “I understand your hesitation, but I’m finally ready, Professor.”

Joseph opened the vault door, and Clark stepped back from him, bracing for the effect of Kryptonite to take over as the professor’s hand came out of the vault. But nothing happened as Joseph opened his hand, revealing a long thin crystal—it was green, but so clear he could see right through it. “What is it?” Clark asked, breathless.

“I’m not sure,” Joseph answered. “But what my scientists confirmed in the comparison with the meteor rock is that though they share similar chemical properties, they are not the same.”

Clark reached out for the crystal, hesitating just before touching it to see if his normal reaction to Kryptonian minerals would happen—but still nothing.

“Take it, Naman,” Joseph said. “It belongs to you.”

Clark at last gripped it, feeling a strange tingling overcome him, that could’ve been mistaken for any chill of excitement, he decided. “So, you don’t believe the rocks—or it looks to me, the crystals—were what caused the skinwalker mutation in your people?”

Professor Willowbrook had told him in an earlier visit that Kyla’s animalistic tendencies of attacking those who threatened her people was not unique. Such inhumane behavior had happened among the skinwalkers since their inception.

“No, I never did believe the crystals caused the metamorphosis,” he said. “That was something Kyla’s parents chose to tell her when they explained her ability to transform—which few of our kind have now.”

Clark nodded. “I guess it’s easier to tell someone they were genetically altered by a rock, then to say they’re part alien.”

“Both are burdens,” he answered. And for the first time, Clark realized Joseph was part of his family tree—very distant, but still part Kryptonian. “But it was up to Kyla’s parents to choose which burden they would have her carry,” the professor continued.

“But she already knew that the Kawatche people were born from the result of the forbidden affair—”

“Yes, but she believed the man from the stars was human in all aspects, except for his unique birth place—as though there was an alternate Earth with humankind,” the professor said. “That, again, is what her parents chose to teach her—to protect her from—”

“A serious complex?” Clark asked, understanding exactly why Kyla’s parents withheld the truth. Sometimes he wished his own parents could’ve thought of a better excuse. “So, Kyla didn’t realize that I was a full-blown alien—because that’s definitely what I am—my DNA isn’t even close to human.”

Professor Willowbrook smiled, choosing not to answer the obvious—that Kyla might have felt differently about Clark if she’d known that. “I’m happy to see that you’ve fully embraced that part of you,” he said. “And I hope that one day the woman you are destined to be with, will do the same.”

“She already has,” Clark said.

He only hoped Lana would accept the consequences that came along with that. How was he ever going to find the courage to tell her what he had to?

He never wanted to repeat the tragedy of the skinwalkers.

What an awesome update, ajfinn! Now I just have to tell you that I already wrote my Alt. Clana Scenes parts 5 & 6 before I read your update - just haven't had the chance to type & post them - so any similarities to your story are purely accidental! (Clark seeks advice from Prof. Willlowbrook in my story too.) I guess the better friends we become, the more we think alike?;) And why didn't I guess him correctly? Anyway, it's not about the same topic & all, so still quite different, but I couldn't believe we were both bringing him in at the same time! Lovin' your updates, as always. Now that I've read it, I can go to sleep & try to get rid of this headache - so maybe I can type & post tomorrow. :):):):):)

Nope ;) The one in the Superman movie did what the black crystal of the 3 combined stones did in Smallville. BUT, this crystal does, in my mind, look like the one from the Superman movie, but it's smaller, and it has another mysterious power.

Part 54:

After searching for Lana among the dozens of rooms, Chloe finally found her out on the balcony, leaning against the rail. “Hey, what are you doing out here?”

Lana wiped her eyes before she turned. “Just thinking,” she answered. “Maybe a little too hard.”

“I can see that,” Chloe said, noticing the red tint of her eyes. She couldn’t imagine anything between Clark and Lana making her cry—they seemed to be more than happy together. “Can you tell me about it?”

Lana gave a big smile, catching Chloe off guard. “I’ll make you a deal—you tell me all about that cute guy you have in there, and then I’ll admit why I’m out here blubbering.”

Chloe tipped her head. “Are you kidding? You really expect me to do head-over-heels flips why you’re obviously not in the mood for it?”

“Chloe, seriously,” Lana said, looking her straight in the eyes. “Everything is perfectly fine with Clark and I—I’m just thinking a little too far into the future, and it’s freaking me out a bit.”

“You mean about marriage—because, holy cow, I couldn’t believe Mr. Olsen called Clark out like that—he’s probably wigging out right now . . . is that why he left?” Chloe said, without taking a breath. “Because, don’t worry, he’ll calm down and—”

Lana held up her hand. “No, Clark was fine with that—it’s not like we haven’t had some pretty serious talks the past few days,” she said. “But I’m not saying another word until you dish up the good stuff about you and Jimmy.”

Chloe raised her brow. “Serious talks, huh?” she asked, then waited for Lana to spill. But Lana only shook her head with her lips clamped shut. “Oh, all right—I’ll tell you about Jimmy.”

She checked to make sure the balcony door was shut tight, then returned to Lana, and leaned against the balcony rail with her. Chloe stayed quiet for a minute, taking a deep cleansing breath of the fresh outdoor air. “He’s amazing,” she said at last, her eyes sparkling like a disco ball in the sun. “Oh . . . I don’t even know where to begin. It’s like a serious rush for me every time he opens his mouth to speak—we have the best conversations—about technology, journalism, mysteries of the universe . . . man, it’s just awesome!”

“I can imagine,” Lana said, knowing Chloe has really needed someone to chat with—who was on her same level of advanced human curiosity—all her life.

“And then there’s times that I wish he’d just shut up and kiss me, you know?” Chloe whispered, as though Jimmy was standing with them on the balcony.

Lana had noticed Chloe’s hesitancy a few times with Jimmy, which was confusing, given their history. “You mean—”

Chloe sighed. “No—he hasn’t kissed me yet—not since the first summer I interned at the Daily Planet,” she said. “And I know what you’re thinking, Lana. But this is a REALLY strange situation for us—I mean, a few summers ago, we were just messing around, and were really stupid to do what we did. It was more like a quest of curiosity—which was . . . geez . . . ” Chloe started to cry, wiping furiously at her face and trying to stop. “It’s so embarrassing . . . I can’t even imagine what he thinks of me.”

Lana put her arm around Chloe. “Hey, he was there too. He probably feels the same way—”

“No, I’m sure he thinks I’ve done that with a dozen guys since him,” Chloe said, having no success with trying to calm down. “I mean, why wouldn’t he? At fifteen, I was like, ‘Hey, that sounds like fun! Let’s give it a try!’ So . . . so of course he thinks I’ve messed around at every chance I had—which I haven’t, you know that.”

Lana was speechless, all she could do was nod.

Chloe gave one of her ‘Oh, I’m such a stupid idiot’ smiles, still wiping and sniffing, then released one last heavy breath. “What should I do? Help me.”

Gripping Chloe’s shoulders and facing her, Lana said, “Talk to him. Tell him everything you just told me. You shouldn’t let that get in your way of having a real relationship with him now.”

“I just didn’t expect that I’d ever see him again—let alone actually start to LIKE him,” Chloe said. “It’s just all so messed up, we’ve done everything backwards, and I just wish I could fix it.”

An interesting possibility entered Lana’s mind. “Chlo, you said that he didn’t kiss you last night—but I’m sure he had the opportunity to, right?” she asked. “I mean, you guys were together for hours.”

Chloe nodded. “He had several opportunities, which makes me wonder if he really likes me at all—maybe he—”

“Oh, no . . . he’s definitely whooped! When he looks at you, it’s like he’s drifting off on an enchanted cloud,” she said. “But my point is, that maybe he’s trying to start over—just like you want to. Maybe he wants to forget about what happened in the past, and pretend that you’ve just met. As adults this time.”

Chloe smiled, her tummy doing a flip. “Do you really think so?” she asked. “Do I dare talk to him about it, or should I just leave it alone—see what happens?”

Lana shrugged. “That’s completely up to you. Just do what feels right.”

With one last exhale of emotion, Chloe nodded. “Too bad it took you and Clark so long to do what ‘feels right’,” she said. “You guys are both so good when it comes to giving advice, but you really suck when it comes to taking it.”

“Yeah, you’ve definitely talked circles around us both,” Lana said with an embarrassed smirk. “But thanks for being so supportive, it means a lot. Especially right now.”

“So let’s talk about ‘right now,’” Chloe said. “As much as you two have to worry about, I’ve still never seen either of you so happy—which kind of makes me question those swollen red eyes of yours.”

Lana motioned for Chloe to follow her, and they started walking along the long tiled balcony. “We both know that Clark has a long history of running from his problems,” Lana said. “But he’s been amazing lately—he’s taken a risk by finally sharing his secret with me, he’s facing his destiny head on, and he’s accepted the fact that he can’t save everyone—no matter how hard he tries.”

When Lana paused, looking away, Chloe said, “But? There’s always a ‘but’ when it comes to Clark Kent.”

“Exactly, and this is the most difficult one I’ve ever had to deal with,” Lana said, her eyes turning back into water spouts. “As much as I’ve told him to believe in my love for him, I’m so afraid . . . ” she had to stop to catch her breath, “ . . . I’m so afraid that he’ll leave me again one day. That he’ll think I can’t handle the burden of him being who he is . . . of the destiny he has to fulfill. I’m scared that his love for me will cause him to give me up—to keep me safe and sheltered from whatever consequences he thinks of . . . ”

Chloe would’ve argued, just to make Lana feel better, but she was right on target. Sometimes Clark’s altruism ended up hurting more people than it helped.

Lana was sobbing now, and Chloe wrapped her arms around her. “I can’t let him walk out on me again,” Lana said. “Somehow, I have to make him believe that I’m strong enough to carry both of us when I have to. That I—” Lana’s satellite phone rang in her pocket, and she grabbed it, stopping mid-sentence. “Clark, are you okay?”

“What’s wrong?” Clark asked, hearing the stress in Lana’s voice.

Lana cleared her throat, trying to sound normal. “Nothing, I was just umm—”

“Worried about me?” he asked. “I’m fine. I’m just visiting with my parents, and then I’ll be coming back.”

Lana sighed. “Good. And no, I wasn’t worried about you,” she said, rolling her eyes at Chloe—confirming exactly what they’d just talked about. “You’re a big boy—a pretty tough one, at that.”

“Nahhhhhhh . . . I’m not really that tough,” Clark said, trying to sound humble. “Yeah, okay, I guess I can flex for you when I get there . . . oh, is that what you were thinking about when I called? Because you don’t have to resort to begging.”

Lana laughed. “Oh yes please, Clark, just ONE more peek of you shirtless, and I promise I’ll stop asking . . .”

Chloe shook her head with a crooked smile, then walked away. “Sheesh, you guys even need a room when you’re thousands of miles apart!” she mumbled. “Remind me to get you a phone booth for a wedding gift.”

Chloe shook her head with a crooked smile, then walked away. “Sheesh, you guys even need a room when you’re thousands of miles apart!” she mumbled. “Remind me to get you a phone booth for a wedding gift.” [/B]

Wonderful! Clana isn't affected by distance, only by the closeness of two hearts!

That was great! I would quote it again...but Cardinal just did. I like the nod to the phone booth also!

Clark can't leave Lana because he is worried about her...not after all this!! She is his protector in this story right?! Hopefully she is just worrying about nothing.

The phone call was sweet. I also loved the Chloe-Lana support system :).

You know.. Ive been wondering how close you intend to stay to the Superman storyline. I've been seeing a lot of what might be foreshadowing of a break up... and its scaring me =( Although it would be true to the Supes storyline, seeing these two part would be sooo sad. I'm just hopign this story has a happy ending.

For heaven's sake, Ketchup!! Do you really think I'd spend all this time on a fic if I LIKED everything about Superman/Smallville mythos?

Clois is NON-EXISTENT in my universe, okay? Give me some freakin' credit here! :p :p :p

PS I hate sad endings, so dry your tears. :D

A big tatoo of a shield and an 8 burned into your chest. :p

But thanks for defending me. You know me well. :D

*Rolls her eyes again at Ketchup's failing faith in me. Then heads over to his own story thread to see if there's an update. Long live the resistance!! Except when it comes to Clana resistance, that is*

OH -- DOES EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT THE "CLANA FIX CLUBHOUSE" I STARTED IN THE FAN FICTION DISCUSSIONS SECTION?? HEAD ON OVER TO CHAT WITH READERS AND WRITERS OF CLANA FANFICTION!!!

I’m scared that his love for me will cause him to give me up—to keep me safe and sheltered from whatever consequences he dreams up . . . ”

You blow me away, ajfinn! I can really feel Lana's emotions when I read this. And Chloe's too. You're awesome!
I actually read the update at the ungodly hour of 3:30 a.m. - again - but I wasn't logged in, so didn't get to reply till now. Keep it going. I still love this story. :):):):):)

So ........ I was trying to remember the other day who it was who inspired me to write this fic. And I just figured it out!

When I first started reading fan fic in May, I found Clarksgirl21's fic, and posted this:

"I have to say that you certainly have their voices and speech patterns down. Nice job!! It's almost sad that we all know them so well. Makes me feel a bit mentally unstable at times." -ajfinn

So, it made me think just how "mentally unstable" I was. :D Could I write a fic that was believable like Clarksgirl21??

So . . . Clarksgirl21 . . . this WHOLE fic is officially dedicated to YOU! Thanks for inspiring me.

And Smallvilleman, the next time I write a fan fic for "Blue's Clues" if will be ALL for you, dude! So don't ever say I don't care :D

UPDATE coming today!! I'm writing it right now.

I AM????? *runs to check post count* Wow!! Okay, as soon as the story has 1000 posts, we'll celebrate with the "This Time" awards which will be posted on the "Clana Fix Clubhouse" thread I mentioned earlier. I'll make an official announcement then :D

And, no, Cardinal, you can't do 20 more posts of your own just to hurry me up. I need to write an update today.

Haha, you crack me up guys. :D Well, I'm starting to run out of compliments as well. This story has so many twists and turns. I wish it will last forever! Update on the way..sweeeeet. Except now you have ruined my evening. I'm going to be here all night, hoping for an update, hehe :) You're unbelievable good at describe emotions, I can really imagine Clark, Lana, Chloe & Jimmy. Keep it up! 1000 posts and 60 000 views..that's amazing. And this story deserves it! I've even started to read the whole "Clark telling Lana about his abilities" all over again :)

PPMS!

PS. Clana won Kryptonsite-award as best couple. VICTORY! :D

And YOU deserve it, if you're putting that much effort into it.

*Smallvilleman stands tall, his evil Kryptonite ring flashing in the light of the loft -- "I AM the STALKER of this story!" Then shoves ajfinn through the wall of the barn, where she lands with a solid thud. Suddenly, Smallvilleman cries out . . . what? No update tonight? What's wrong with you?? Get up and start typing you lazy . . . *

So . . . that is indeed what I'm doing -- still typing. And yes, despite Smallvilleman's repeated attempts to distract me, the update will be posted very shortly :D
