I was just wondering if someone could answer my question?

Just why where the humans (Genevieve/Jason/Lex/Lionel) after the stones?

I get why Clark wanted them or rather why Jor-El wanted Clark to have them, because they would explain to him more about his destiny and help him understand what he is.

But why were the human characters wanting the stones??? Its a plot that has bugged me all season, i have never really understood why Lex for example wanted to get the stones, what was he expecting to get out of them? I couldnt see any clear reason why Genevieve would kill for them, Jason would threaten the Kents for them and why Lex would be so desperate for them in 'Commencement'.

I missed a lot of this season, but from what I understood the Luthors want the stones because they will attain ultimate knowledge. Somewhere there is a legend or something like that that they know about. I think the Teagues wanted them for revenge or something.
There is more to it, but I think that is kind of the jist;)

The humans, (everyone but Clark) were after the stones all for the same reason. Power. The stones combined were legended to hold more info then any other source on the planet. Wisdom provides infinite power.

If you had access to a trove of knowledge that may be alien in nature, you should be intrigued to retrieve it too.

Lionel started seeking the stones when he had an incurable liver disease; he thought that the great knowlege promised by the legend might give him a cure for his condition. After transferring with Clark, Lionel WAS cured. Why continue to seek the stones, then? Maybe he just wanted the transference stone again, so that he could become Clark Kent again, permanently, & be the most powerful man on Earth. (This could have been his intention when he said to Lex, "We don't have much time left here together" in one of the last episodes of the season.)
What about LEX? Lex found out about the legend when he took over LuthorCorp from Lionel & found that Lionel had been financing digs to find the stones for over 2 years. Lex has a craving for power (it's in his genes), so seeking the stones is showing that part of his nature. The artifacts containing Kryptonian symbols would tie them to the caves & the key, in Lex's mind - & he knew the key was "not of this earth." Lex seeks the truth about the caves, the symbols, the stones, & how they connect to Clark.
Genevieve? According to Lionel, Genevieve has been seeking the stones since before Jason was born. If this is true, Lionel may have heard about it from her, since he knew her when Lex was a "bored little boy at the opera." Why? Well, she was powerful enough to get Lionel out of prison, so maybe it's just that those with power always seek more power. OR she knew from her ancestors about Isobel seeking revenge, & thought that the only way to break the spell & threat to her family was to seek & unite the stones before Isobel's heir could do so.
Jason? Jason was probably not aware of his mother's search for the stones at first, but later began to put the pieces together. He wanted to help Lana, but then felt betrayed by her, & joined his mother's crusade for the stones.

The stones were believed to lead to the ultimate prize. The knowledge of the universe.
If you were a billionaire, wouldn't you think this knowledge was only met for you!
