View Full Version : Did anyone NOT like the end of this season?

I sincerely don't mean to make anyone angry, but the last two episodes of the season didn't exactly tickle my fancy. After all of that building up, they backstep to another FOTW epi. Commencement helped, but by the end of the episode I was SO lost. I was expecting a cliffhanger, but what I got was confused.

It left a bitter taste in my mouth. But it's just a tv show so I'm not going to let it ruin my life.

A lot of the episodes have some sort of interesting element to them that make me happy at some point.

Seeing Clark at the North Pole made me really happy! :D

Actually, I loved this episode (my favorite finale.) I really didn't like Ageless and Forever though.

i liked it but season 3 finale had more suspense as waiting for the new season. this season you pretty much know that it will lead to the fortress of solitude and that something evil is in the ship.

DarkJustice
05-26-2005, 08:56 PM
the ships not necessarily evil and you dunno what might be the outcome of lana knowing that Aliens exist and how thats going to affect her and clark, the kents prolly wont be dead but could be seriosuly injured. Nothing was mentioned of Chloe and Lex after the stone sucked clark away, and what could be up with Lionel too many points to speculate about it leaves you waiting to find out whats going to happen. The only thing that's pretty certain is the FOS, and that Clark is going to want to get back to Smallville as soon as possible.

Anyway this was my favorite season finale so far. I felt like everything that had happened in the episodes the whole season led up to it very well. I didn't like the ageless or Forever episodes being stuck near the end either, but they both had a couple of things that made me not hate them. The relationship between Lana and Clark being brought back and Lana kind of pushing Jason away during those episodes. If they had just been decent episodes including those points without a FOTW character it would have been much better Im sure, but Commencement made up for it in my mnd. I'm currently watching Season 3 over again and havent gotten to the finale yet but it was decent with chloe blowing up, clark being sucked into the wall and Lex being poisoned, but you know lex cant die and you knew clark would be back, one way or the other. I was anticipating the start of Season 4 a lot but there weren't as many questions running through my mind at the finale.

The finale definately wasn't filled with suspense like season 3. It was a ho-hum ending to a ho-hum year. It did however set things up for a fantastic season 5 if the writers will actually start focusing on the journey and consistent character development again instead of ripping off movie plots and substituting nudity for good dialogue.

It wasn't anything truly amazing. I was expecting to see more damage with the meteors and Clark saving more people.

The cliffhangers didn't do much for me. I love the build up for the Fortess but it was nothing really, truly spectular.

Who wouldn't have gotten lost with so many d*mn commercials? *sheesh*
From that perspective, the Batman previews were more entertaining.

I thought this ending was amazing- the best season ender on the show so far. I didn't really see much to get lost in- but, then again, I saw it without commercial.

Yeah I had to tape it, I was waiting in line to watch star wars when it aired, so I watched it without commercials too. Maybe that made a difference on how it all flowed together for me too.

I don't know yet if I liked it. I still think the producers will worm their way out and we won't see the Fortress of Solitude at all in season 5. And if that happens, then no, I don't like that ending of season 4.

The finale was OK but, yes, it was the weakest season finale so far in the series. Expected as it goes with the weakest season so far. All in all, the finale was a disappointment. We expected more.

The only reason the previous finales got me excited was because I was expecting to see clark fly in them...and that didnt happen until the begining of season 4 and then he was done after the first episode. But the tornado didn't leave much up to question about except for the fact that he might fly and Lana might see him and know.

Season 2 was pretty lame except for Lex's plane crash but then you know Lex can't die.

Season 3 I was hoping to see clark come out of it full powered and ready to go, again lex being poisoned but you know he cant die, only thing good about that one was Chloe's house being blown up and thinking she was dead, and Johnathan Kent wont die. I also didn't like the way they made that finale they spent most of the season making Jor-El look more and more like a kind guy but then in the end he sends this psychopath Supergirl who kills people randomly and then Jor-El just vaporizes her and strangles Johnathan giving clark an ultimatum, come with me or he dies?

This season I know Jason is gone cuz of the new WB show Supernatural, but what happened to him? Is he still alive? They could always bring him back for more episodes later on without having to kill off his character and he would be another fanatic about getting clark exposed and also a rival to Lex since he'd inherit his late mothers fortune. He might even become in charge of Cadmus Labs. They've shown it on the show a couple times and in the comics its a rival to LexCorp and makes plenty of creatures of its own. The ship and Lana, too many theories right there...Chloe and Lex, I have no idea whats going to happen to chloe after lex wakes up still maniacal and all. If they dont show the fortress next season I wont be too dissapointed either, what I'm afraid is they are going to make the fortress look stupid, or make it look like the old superman movie fortress that's my greatest fear for next season. The old one was great back then, but it was pretty plain just like how they showed krypton, giant icicles. I also wonder what happened to Smallville in general, most of the city got torn up by the meteors so how did it affect the town and the moral of the people living there? Plus the whole episode kept me on the edge of my seat hoping clark could get everything done in time to get the stones and stop the meteors and save smallville. Then you see people just running and a meteor land right on top of them, that part freaked me out seeing that many innocent people die. Lots of pryo-technics and amazing effects, one part kind of reminded me of X-Men II though heh. But the entire episode closed up most of the things that i saw in the season and I kept asking why was that part there, and was exciting to watch. The cinematography was well done in the episode, along with most of everyone's acting. Most of the other finales were just like normal episodes and then finally at the last 10 minutes a little suspense followed by "to be continued".

I'm too lazy to read all the posts right now so I'll just answer the question. It was good if it was a mid-season episode, but definitely not a season finale. To me anyways, there's very little suspense.... It didn't leave me with an "OMG, what's going to happen next... 3 months!! I can't wait that long!! I'll die if don't find out" moment like the past three finales had given me.. But that just my opinon..

I did like that Anartica scene though, the meteor shower... Not so much. The ship brought me no excitement, don't really care who's in it...

This... is a bad bad finale... firstly, wtf was that Clark throwing the stone thing? Was that meant to be a cliffhanger? That was just dumb... they didn't explain the link between Clark and Lionel at all, it was very poorly done.

How did he get teleported to the North Pole? The only actually cliffhanger-ey bit was Lana discovering the space ship... And pretty much everyone's non-death, which was done at the end of season three anyway. Also the 24 rip sucked.

They should have had Chloe telling Clark she knew about him...

Worst season finale to date IMO... worst season to date IMO...

Season five will probably be better...

Vortigun how can you say there was no cliffhanger you just asked like 5 different questions that they have to answer next season...that kinda leaves it as a cliffhanger. And everyones non death has been done in every season Finale since season 1.

And yeah I had goosebumps too. Season 3 season finale sucked in my oppinion. Season 1 was good I wanted clark to fly...he didnt so that was a dissapointment. Season two...no suspense, just kinda curious where clark was going and where lex was gonna end up hoping clark would end up flying around...he didnt. Season 3 pissed me off they made Jor el look more and more like a good guy as the season went on then destroyed him. Made him evil by killing supergirl and hurting johnathan, only cool part was thinking Chloe died. And in each of those finales were just like watching a normal episodes. Season 2 was a little more dramatic than Season 3's finale though.

Main point Season 4's finale was action packed, emotion driven, exciting, and most of all tied up most of all the episodes that had come prior during that season.

I think I said most of that before, but I dont remember where heh and I just watched all 4 seasons over again, and Season 4 still kept me excited and I even knew everything that was coming, but still makes me wish the summer would hurry up and end so I can see all the things that are coming.

Whats gonna happen to Lana, the ship, whats Lex gonna do to Chloe...did they get teleported to the north pole too, what happened to the kents farm and Jason and Shelby, Hows the town going to be affected, Whats Lois going to do, what's lionel going to be turned into...good...bad...psycho, whats clark going to find in the fortress, Whats it going to look like, Will he learn to fly finally, maybe get cold breath...he is in the snow after all, will they finally show Jor El to be a good guy scientist who tried to save his home world and sent his only son to be the sole survivor of their planet...or will they keep making him look like an over bearing father who uses his son? Thats what Im waiting for thats what this finale left me wondering.

What I mean is, those "cliffhangers" were not anticipated at all, they were bungled together in the last 5 seconds of the season...

The entire season was spent focussing on the stones, and he finds the last two in the last ten minutes of the last episode? The point is, none of these things were anticipated enough... Chloe telling Clark that she knew would have been a good cliffhanger to go on, not knowing how exactly he is going to react, but the thing about this is, it all seemed increadably rushed.

Also... Jason... he got shot... and fell, what? Was it 50 feet perhaps into a fast-flowing river? How did he survive... having said that, however, those scenes were very well-done... mainly because of Annette and Jonathan being great actors... felt like a bit of a cop-out just having a meteor hit the house though...

One thing I LOVED in this episode was the beginning... where Lana and Genivive were fighting, that was superb acting by Kristen... very realistic the way her hands were shaking... Lex was also very good in this episode, I could tell he was playing Lana from the start and I loved it...

In all... I think that the acting was good in this episode, emotions seemed very real, but the story just seemed a bit crap and not really a culmination and climax of the finale like season three was, the high in season four for me was where Chloe found out, really, that is what I care about.

A cliffhanger for me is when I care enough to want to know what happens next, and the truth is, I really don't... it just wasn't explained enough for me to want to know most of these things... all i will be watching season five for initially is Clark/Chloe Lex/Chloe/Lana exchanges, I want to see Lex turn evil and Chloe tell Clark... I also want to know about the spaceship, but Lionel's connection to Clark and why Clark is in th North-Pole, just seemed so insanely unexpected and bad story-telling... there wasnt enough back story in the actual season to back any of those events up, they just happened, in 10 seconds of the last episode...

And people are like in awe with that episode and that season which I didn't think was anything special. I thought COMMENCEMENT ROCKED!!!

This episode was not one of my tops ten's but it have it's moments. the only thing I didn'tlike was the fact that now the writers have put Lana in a very dificult position with the crashed ship and his re-new feelings for Clark and everything, how is this going to end... and Chloe?? is she dead?? i mean, no one that knows Clark's secret stays in the show too long, and this is a very good chance to take her out...

fash, i just got done reading some your posts on "Do people who work on Smallville...." in General Discussion and lost a LOT of respect for your opinions. I only started this thread because, when I did, all of the other threads were people gushing about how much they loved the way the season ended. I just wanted one where there can be open speculation. and look around you, there is. nobody here is trying to"hurt this finale" i see just as many people here commenting on points they didn't like as points they did.

Drakaun

I think it was a pretty good finale. The one person who made the comment on not liking the finale because it left too many things unanswered, I was a bit confused by that statement. I mean, I could be wrong but isn't the purpose of a season finale to leave us with a bunch of things unanswered, that by definition is what a cliffhanger is, but then the person also said it was a bad episode because it didn't have any cliffhangers. it is confusing to me.

I understand this person is trying to say that they added a bunch of things in the last ten seconds that they haven't touched the entire season, like the Lionel thing, if I am not mistaken I believe the writers probably have been setting that up since Transferrence, since Lionel's change. I am pretty sure him winding up catatonic in the end has something to do with it but I cannot be sure, that's why it's only a speculation.

In conclusion I found the finale to be a very good finale, like people have said, it is the only finale that really felt like a finale, we are left with an image of smallville on fire, or just smoking wondering what is to happen to Smallville, we are left wondering what Lex is going to do to Chloe after she stopped him from seeing Clark in the back room in the cave, I for one would be pissed if I were an evil son of a ***** like Lex Luther and would probably kill her on sight, but we don't know, and that's what makes a good finale, a cliffhanger where you're left not knowing what the hell is going to happen next.

After reading a lot of other posts and threads I started to understand what had happened. Then the new spoilers came out and that cleared a lot of stuff up. I was fine with the obvious things that were happening, but stuff like the Loinel thing and the North Pole (How did people find out he went to the North Pole, anyway?) just left me to wonder. I sort of felt stupid starting this thread. Everyone else was talking about what was going to happen to such and such a person and what was in the ship and I felt like I had just been told one of those jokes that only the person who made it up understood.

P.S. My favorite part of the finale was that few seconds where it showed Smallville from the hill Lois was on. I thought that was a nice dramatic shot and well digitally animated, but looking through the pictures of the episode showed only a few snapshots. I at least expected a stockpile of normal pictures(you know, just snapshots from the normal scenes) if not that particular one of Smallville, but there's only a few of each character--and aren't they all from the graduation scene? I don't think there's any of KK. Do they have yet to release them, or is that all that's coming out?

Commencement was decent in my book, but nothing spectacular. Great build up to the FOS, but a better cliffhanger would have been to let the FOS form, and then it is ended as Clark is walking in. I was also bummed that Clark did not find out what Chloe knows about him. The special effects were nicely done in the episode though.

As a whole season four as a whole was pretty much a mixed bag

From Crusade - Jinx the season was awesome. Then Spell started a turn for the worst. They had a few good episodes after like Onyx and Blank. But for the most part, I thought that season four was the weakest season of the show so far.

As a whole, the problems that I saw with the season :

- The lack of screentime for Lex. Lex was always heavily involved in each of the seasons, and he was nowhere to be seen in season four.

- Lana's storyline. Why did they ever add her into the mythology? What do witches have to do with anything? I think the writers forgot that the show is supposed to focus on the teenage years of Clark Kent before he became Superman. That means you show him dealing with his various powers, struggling with his desire to be normal, his Kryptonian heritage and how it conflicts with Johnathan and Martha's beliefs, etc..

- The serious lack of continuity. The season just seemed to be all over the place writing wise. One week, Clark is torn up over Alicia's death, and the next week it is like she never existed. Bo Duke gets shot in the leg one week, and the next he is walking around find. They introduce Level 33.1(which had potential to be a really great storyline) and then it was never talked about again.

- No new power introduced. What happened to the one power per season tradition? The fourth season should have introduced superbreath, and it would have been cool to see how they would introduce it.

Commencement was action packed, but I agree that Covenant left us hanging with a better cliffhanger.

The artic/FOS scene, I mean we all know what that's leading to.

Lana and the ship had me wondering. Nothing too big for Chloe and Lex though, or the Kents, we know they have to be ok (You dodged death again Jonathon) :)

i thought commencement was one of the best episodes of the season. AMAZING! I agree with everything DarkJustice has to say... smart guy. I don't understand how people arent left in suspense. Lana and the ship!?!? LIONEL?!?! people always seem to forget about that part.
what really got me in the episode was the devastation the meteor shower caused. i was almost in tears it was so powerful. The town was completely destroyed! people's lives have ended and everything they lived for is gone. it is such a tragic event, especially with all the natural disasters going on this year... the tsunami, New Orleans, the mudslides.. everything. It really was shocking. My favorite shot in all of Smallville history was when Lois was looking over the grassy hill (very Sound of Music like) onto the town that was ravaged by the meteors. It was truly an amazing shot and really emotional, great acting by durance. a GREAT episode...

Tell you what though, I'd have thought it would have been a lot better, if, while on the way to find the stones, Clark would keep seeing people needing saving. He'd then begin to understand how he can help people who need help. That would have been quite good.
Covenant was good for an extremely suspenseful ending, since we had absolutely no idea what was going to happen once Clark came out of the caves. Commencement however, was action packed, and still quite suspenseful at the end, so I do think it's probably the best finale yet.

All of the Jor-El being made out to be a bad guy, tortuing Clark and giving him ultimatums...makes me wonder if it is Zod training Clark to be one of his followers and have Earth ready for his arrival...AFter all, they cast Terence Stamp as the voice of "Jor-El"... WOuld be a good irony if Zod's intentions backfire and the Man Of Steel is one of the good guys instead.

^^The ending was the sickest I totally loved the ending and how the Cliffhanger was in a way perfected. What more can you as for in the ending? I loved how Chloe was able to see him in the chamber and she teleports to the FOS in the beg epp of Seas 5. In the beggining of all the talk about the Finale of Seas 4 for commencement I totally was against and hated the thought that ZOD might be somehow introduced but obviously seeing how the 2 beeings from the ship are supposed to be desendents of ZOD, Jor Els voice has to be impostered from ZOD. I totally think that somehow they will tie in that Jor El that Clark is hearing, is not Jor EL, because look at how evil he is to Clark, all the ultimadems(spelling) he gives him. I believe it cant be JOR EL

Personally loved the end of Series 4 - very excited that Chloe knows and is actively helping clark, even against Lex, whom she owes her life to.

The whole meteor shower count down worked for me, seeing Clark break into the mansion without stopping to ponder the morals of betraying Lex etc was cool too, very man of action!

Can't wait to see the first episode of the next series, curious about the fortress and how Clark is going to get back to Smallville - he's fast, but without flying it could be a bit of a jog!

Lana surviving the helicopter crash stretched the bounds a bit, and I have to confess I am more interested in what will happen next with Chloe, and how Clark will react when he finds out that she knows .... ah the possibilities ...

Seeing the Kents in action was good, being actively involved in the action/plot, instead of just getting to comment after the fact. Seeing what is left of the town when the series returns will also be interesting.

Maybe not THE most cliffhanging end of season, but it did set up enough questions for me to be very eagerly anticipating the next installment!
