View Full Version : The ship tied to Superman Returns

The producers of Smallville mentioned a while back that something in season 5 of Smallville will directly affect the new Superman movie being filmed. The premise of Superman Returns is that Kal-el leaves Earth for 6 years to explore and see if he truly is the last Kryptonian (or something along those lines) and returns to find that Earth has adapted to life without him. Just how does Clark manage to leave Earth? Well, one of the first scenes filmed in Superman Returns was the crashing of a black spaceship onto the Kent Farm, said to be "Superman's ship." In some of the released pictures, you can't really get a good look at the details of the ship, but it does look eerily similar to the same crash landing made at the end of Commencement.

Now maybe there is something in this ship and Clark will keep the ship after he's done dealing with any possible threat it poses; but my feeling is that in the season premiere, once the Fortress of Solitude is built after the crystal lands in the snow, the ship will light up, activate, and fly to the antarctic or wherever Clark is, and it will be how he manages to get back home. Or maybe he'll just store it in the FOS and teleport back and forth from the cave to the FOS. Whatever they do, they can't give Lana enough time to look at and play around with the ship or have too many people from Smallville cry "alien,"...this way all season long we'll be able to hear Lana go on and on about how convinced she is a ship landed and say she's not crazy, have Lex interrogate her about this, have Clark deny anything, and have Chloe and the Kents play along.

Personally I don't think it'll tie in...

It really doesn't make sense to tie the movie in with the show... all it will accomplish is de-valuing both the show and the film as a work in it's own right.

i seriously doubt the ship landing wil tie in with the film superman returns. Im so sure i would bet my house on it

i dont think it would devalue the movie or the show. if it was done right the season would end right before the movie came out.

kinda lending credence to this theory....

Although, then what about season 6?

The ship they use in Superman Returns looks like the crystal ship they used in Superman: The Movie to get him to Earth not what we saw at the end of Commencement. Check it out...

"That movie was so old the ship don't even look like a ship at all."

It seems like the new movie has a chance to be nearly as awful as the first. Paying tribute to trash leads to more trash. Why was Singer hired?? IMO, neither Xmen movie is much better than mediocre...only slightly better than the Star Trek trash. I guess trash sells...or at least the money people think it does. For once, I wish someone would make a serious film based on a super hero...instead of the cheesy trash we typically get.

You're kidding, right? That movie is so awful, Marlon Brando tried to PAY the studio to remove his scenes from the movie!!! Brando didn't want to be associated with that trash, but the studio rejected his offer.

They should have got the Spierman director to do the business since they aren't making a Spiderman film right now. but if they are i take it back. Or get Tim Burton. Imagine that. A darker version with the return of Superman, his version of the film might be interesting.

fa8362,
What's with all the hate? If these movies were such trash then you must equate SV with the same because alot of it is silliness or poorly written, but most of us love it anyway. Why are you here if only to downgrade?

Ah, perhaps. However, I may have only been asking for enlightenment. :)

Actually Sam Raimi, the Spiderman director, is making Spiderman 3 and supposedly will be filming Spiderman 4 at the same time...I guess kind of how they filmed Back to the Future 2 and 3 concurrently. Singer hopefully will do a good job with this new Superman movie - the X-Men movie were pretty well done...not overly flashy or far-fetched considering you were dealing with mutants. I agree though that the 80's Superman movies were awful. There were so many gaps and things that didn't make sense. Can someone explain to me how Clark just magically changes into the Superman outfit midair while flying? He just jumps out a window, is wearing his suit, puts his arms up, and he's wearing the blue tights.

The ship won't be tied into the movie, the tie in is going to be the set they use for the fortress of solitude.

Thank Zero rence for that one!

Who said gough and millar wrote Spiderman? Scott Rosenberg and David Koepp would disagree!

almiles gave in their script of spiderman 2 but it was horrid so avi arad had someone else write it. But their credited as teleplay i think purely for contractual reasons.

Yeah, I guess the 2 ships don't look anything alike. So much for that theory...just trying to figure out what the heck the ship in Smallville is; when I orignally heard that Smallville and Superman Returns would have some small connection, I also thought that it would simply be that the FOS will look the same in both. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah they have a seperate actor playing young clark kent in the new movie and have the crash scene revisited where martha finds baby Kal El and other parts of his youth which I think are supposed to be either flash backs or openings for the movie to get people up to speed on the Superman thing. You have to know that when they make a movie they expect people who have no idea who superman is to go watch it as well so they have to have some back story on a movie that hasnt been made in about 20 years.

For the tie in it'd make sense to use the same fortress, although it might take some of the suprise away from the new movie when we see it. I read on bluetights.net that Singer wanted it to look a lot like the original superman movies set which would kind of go against smallville's version of kryptonians since the FOS is supposed to be similar to a typical krytponian architecture. And it seems like the Kryptonians in Smallville are more metallic technological looking than the crystal snow dwelling kryptonians from the original movies.

And lastly I loved the original Superman movies, 1 and 2. Three was horrible and 4 was just a last try at getting back the magic 2 had by introducing a villian with similar powers to Superman. The movies were made way back in the late 70's it came out around the same time as the original Star Wars. Cheesy movies were basically the only kind coming out. Besides it was a movie based on a comic book, back then how are you supposed to take any guy walking around in bright blue tights completely serious. But I think Chris Reeve and Donor did a great job at making it enjoyable and believable, and until the new spiderman movie came out I'd have to say it was the best Superhero movie ever made. Batman was a close second but they changed too much of the story for me to like it so much, and Bruce just goes around telling every girl he falls for who he is in those movies that always bugged me too hehe.

One thing I always wondered about Superman in general was if he keeps his tights under his normal clothes, where does he put his normal clothes when he changes into superman? He can't put them under his tights or else they'd be bulging out at random areas all over his body, so does he just throw his clothes to the side and then after doing his super deeds fly back to the spot he threw them and then flies somewhere else and changes back? Or does he fold them all at super speed and stick them in his underwear or what? Also where does he hide his cape? If you thought the original movie was bad cuz he changed in mid air what about that? That happens in the comics all the time.

In the comics, Superman has a pouch in his cape for his street clothes. He super-compresses his clothes and slips them in the pouch. I have no explanation for the shoes. lol

Many people in many threads keep talking about how the ship must be the "connection" they'd heard was going to happen between Smallville and the movie. OK, maybe I've missed something, and if I have, someone please enlighten me... but that rumor was debunked. It was a misquote of a vague statement that almiles made, which when translated back to English from French (it was on a French language website) said something different than what was intended. According to my information, there is NO connection between Smallville and any of the movies, other than the fact that they're all interpretations of Superman.

Ooo super compressed clothes into a pouch ok, that works hehe. Better than sticking them in his underwear like i was thinking hehe.

I thought the connection between the two turned out not to be so. I think the only connection the two will have is the WB doing a trailer at the end of Season 5 of SV for Superman Returns ;)
