I think this movie is going to be awesome because it has Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning and is directed by Steven Spielberg! The trailer is amazing so watch it if you haven't seen it yet.

Maybe they'll finally have a good remake of something.Films like 'Planet of the Apes' and 'The Time Machine' were terrible compared to the originals. If u ever get the chance to listen to Orsen Wells famous radio play where people actually thought it was happening-they played it once on Halloween-its pretty cool.

thats sounds awesome, i wanna hear that radio thing you were talking about. Yea I agree about Planet of the Apes and The Time Machine being pathetic. I'm hoping this will do the novel justice, although that will be quite the difficult task to accomplish considering how brilliant the novel was.
I think War of the Worlds has a chance to be great due to its strength in acting (Cruise, Fanning) and the fact that it has one the greatest directors of our age, Spielberg.

I thought that was a remake of Earth vs. The Flying Saucers, and that it was awful compared to the original.
I'm not sure about remakes. NOTLD '90 was good, Dawn of the Dead was a good movie but it didn't seem to me to share much with the original beyond title, the others mentioned here were awful-- especially Burton's Planet of the Apes-- but I'm also not so sure this is going to be an actual remake of the original film. From what I've seen and heard it, like the aforementioned DOTD, will share a title with the original and not much else.

They actually made a movie about the Orsen Wells radio play called 'The Night that Paniced America'.I heard the replay of the broadcast some years ago on Halloween-which made it even more eerie. It starts off with an announcer introducing a live simulcast of some concert-then u here music for abit-then the announcer breaks in for a special news bulliten of a mysterious bright light in the sky-power going out-a reporter at the scene where something touched down-losing contact with the reporter-and in between each break-in going back to the concert for abit.
If u imagine what it was like in the 40's-u can picture how terrifying this could have been.

Has anyone else seen the new trailer that show the aliens! I saw it at the end of Star Wars a couple days ago and they look sort of like the aliens from independence day. I'm excited!
You can watch that new trailer with the alien in it HERE (http://movies.channel.aol.com/franchise/exclusives/war_of_the_worlds_movie)
Also, has anyone visted www.waroftheworlds.com (http://www.waroftheworlds.com)? If not, then you should because the design is amazing!

I saw a few clips today on Oprah (Tom was on) and I think it looks great. I love big blockbustery movies like this. Plus Spielberg is brilliant so I know it'll be great.
Looking forward to it. :D

Spielberg is definitely brilliant and I'm sure he cooked up something extra special with War of the Worlds!
All the clips look amazing (esp. the special effects!) and I really think this will redeem all of those failed movie remakes like time machine and planet of the apes.

Oprah said they were going to have him on with Tom but he's too busy working on WotW and didn't have time. The movie comes out June 29th (I believe) so he's down to the wire. I'm sure it'll be amazing. I can't wait.

Don´t get me wrong, I love movies where Earth is being attacked by invaders from space, but all that I can think of have had a contemporary setting! I think that if they really wanted this one to stand out from the others, they should´ve set this one in the end of the 19th century in which the book was written. I´ve been checking that one out at my public libary every now and then and I would´ve loved to see how that would´ve been portrayed. I´m not saying I´m gonna hate what´s coming out, cause I never judge something before I´ve seen it completely.

I agree. When Burton's Planet of the Apes was announced I had hopes that it would be a closer adaptation of the novel than the original, which I loved as a film but they didn't have the budget to do the novel, but it didn't quite work out.

Wrong! Those were the "Alien Abduction" aliens who were in Close Encounters, and please tell me you didn't fall for that insidious sweetness with which ET tried to take over those children's minds. :rotfl:

I saw it. I think it'll be all right, but Batman Begins was tremendous, and I'm really looking forward more to Fantastic Four, Land of the Dead, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Serenity than War of the Worlds.

This was a movie I was going to skip out on originally but the new trailer has convinced me otherwise. I would prefer to see a classic take on the story, but they are two versions out there. This one is just the most prominent one of the two current releases.
Just hope it doesn't turn into another GODZILLA.

Actually, Land of the Dead is the one I'm most looking forward to-- because I've been looking forward to it for the better part of 20 years -- and I just hope you're wrong about FF.
I like Cruise, and Spielberg's good if erratic. I liked most of his early stuff, the first ep. of Columbo, Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters, but a lot of his stuff lately leaves me cold. (Although, to be fair, my brother pointed out to me the other day that a lot of the stuff with Spielberg's name on it isn't directed by him these days, it just comes from hi production co.)

I saw that the movie was only 1 hour and 57 minutes? Can't be right, I was thinking maybe 2 and a half hours.
Anyway, I'm gonna watch it this weekend, but from the reviews I have gotten, its pretty good. It got $21 million yesterday so Tom Cruise is well on his way to another $100 million movie.

I saw it the other day. In a word-Bleh.
The FX's were neat but that was about in IMO. The orginal was just as good if not bettger becasue the main charecters were at least likeable. The plot in this one gets a little lost.

Question:
Justin Chatwin, Tom Cruise's son on WOTW, is listed on IMDB as part of Smallville's pilot.
"Smallville" in episode: "Smallville (Pilot)" (episode # 1.1) 16 October 2001
Anybody knows what character her played?

You thought it was better than Batman? I have to disagree but i really liked this movie. :)
Just seen it last night, and I liked it. Tom Cruise is pretty good, but he always stars in this kind of movies......Minority Report, Mission: Impossible
Anyways, Dakota Fanning can be good and all, but her character was way creepy, screaming all the time, with her vital space.....I hope girls like her don't exist in real life
I really liked the brother, Robby, and his situation. Good one. ;)

It is a very close contest! I loved both! I think what gives WOTW the slight edge is the acting and the SOUND effects! The sound of the tripods just added to the sense of fear the aliens were generating. I left the theater virtually exhausted! Any film that can affect me like that gets bonus points in my book!

Yeah i agree. I felt really tense throughout the whole movie, especially when they were in the basement with tim robbins. That was a crazy couple of scenes. I also loved how it wasnt at all like Independence day as in America didnt get into planes and kick the crap out of the aliens. For a sci-fi movie imo it was very real.

I liked it. The story was straight out of the book and the movie so most people already know it. So it looks like Spielberg decided to concentrate on the human interactions instead of tricking out the plotline. In that respect, it was well done.
My favorite part, which I swear no-one else in the theater seemed to get, was an extremely brief cameo by GENE BARRY, the protagonist in the Harryhausen War of the Worlds movie from the 50s or 60s. Look for it!
War of hte Worlds is a really good movie - even better on a big screen with good sound.
Batman Begins WAS even better, however!

Saw it yesterday and I agree, really good movie. It made you wonder though, that the main characters have gone through so much and it couldn't possibly get any worse, but it did. I mean, it was one thing after another.
The son though, really ticked me off. Here he is going through his teenage rebellion phase at the wrong time. It wasn't a time to stand around and look you know? Run!

I thought it was an excellent movie. The acting and special effects were awesome. I agree Rafael122 the Robbie i want to see this thing bothered me.
Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning were excellent.
i was confused....or i didnt pay attention seeing as the movie went by pretty fast after the first 40 minutes...i thought that person who dropped out of the tripod was robby....and then we see him in the end so i guess it wasnt...but then why was cruise crying, well tears in his eyes? plus how come when the birds landed on the tripod, what and why did shield not work? its basically like the JLA episodes with the aliens except they were buried underground plus no justice league...i may be completely all wrong here but it went by too fast for me to analyze it completely. i think they should have shown what they shown in the original, you know the atomic bomb being dropped on it....maybe they could have dropped a hydrogen bomb. in any case it was good but i doubt imo that it beats the storyline of batman begins, the effects i give it to wotw but overall batman is the winner in the movies.

I think the birds weren't seen as a threat, cause... well they weren't.
I think they could of explained the ending better, but it was a good film. Although it didn't seem real, you could imagine how scared you'd be if it was happening to you. Especially when they started vaporizing people.
If we're comparing it to Batman, i'd say Batman was better. A lot of people had written off Batman as another flop before it hit the cinema's though, 'casue of the poor films that went before it (or after, depending on how you look at things). So, when it came out, and it was good... It was even better, cause you thought it'd be bad.
Annnd. Im done.
yeah true that...i didnt mean that the birds were a threat im saying how come the shield didnt work or how was it destroyed? they didnt explain that.

The crows weren't a threat. The microbes were. That red plant that grown all over the place (made of human blood), started to die, and since the plant started to die (and the crows liked to eat it), the crows decided to got directly to the source, the tripods. That's why the tripods were covered with crows and that's how they managed to see that the shields were down.
But again, the aliens died because of the microbes, not the crows, like the first "War of the Worlds".
The movie was about details. ;)

I've heard so many people who hate the movie and for the life of me I can't figure out why. What were people expecting? It's War of the Worlds by Steven Spielberg. If you didn't know exactly what you were gonna get walking in, you were on something.
I loved it. Dakota Fanning is the best child actor around. I've always liked Tom Cruise and I still do (even though he's out of his tree). And the visuals were amazing. It was a mix of old school design with new school effects.
By the way, I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet, but did anyone else catch the GIANT FU to M. Night Shyamalan?

I thought they rushed the end more. But the beginning was a little rushed. The kids get to the house. The son and father play catch and argue for a minute. The son leaves and the lightning storm starts and thats pretty much it. A little rushed.

I liked the movie but it was seriously overhyped.
Plot - Was strong and well done excluding the rather lame and predictable ending. For the ending alone with a surviviors set-up that shouldn't have happened the way it did, the film drops a grade and I'm a fan of David Koepp and Speilberg.
Acting - Dakota won this movie. Not Cruise.
Special Effects -- Believable but beyond that I wasn't too impressed. It was one of the few things I did enjoy in the movie.
Comparing it to Batman - Batman was better the film, more character development and a logical ending.
