okay, these are some questions i've had about superman or smallville in general. For one, what exactly IS Kryptonite? I assumed it's pieces of Krypton, but if that's true, why could Clark's people live on it? In Superman the movie, Lex said it was radioactivated (if that's a word), then what did it? The original destruction of Krypton, or their entry to earth's atmosphere? But then where did the kryptonite in the ancient chinese relics come from?
What's with the Indian prophecy and the kryton symbols around the world? I guess this ones obvious... Some other Kryptonians came... But i've never been sure.
I think thsoe are the major ones... I've just always wondered about that kryptonite thing.

Except for the existence of Kryptonite in ancient China, the result of Krypton's explosion is the reason we have green K, pieces of the planet became radioactive after the destruction of the planet. Perhaps others can comment on the China connection; I think that subject was brought up in a thread at the time of that ep.
Red K, from Silver Age comics at least, resulted in green K meteors passing through a space cloud in, well, outer space.
Other Kryptonians on earth? Sure don't forget the time period ep where Joe (Jor-El) was depicted as being on earth. The Kents finding baby Kal-El was not by chance, it was intentional.
Apparently, kryptonite was made by kryptonians on krypton where it had no affect, and brought it to earth in small amounts, where it did. Therefore, they could use it to protect things on earth and such from other kryptonians..

Krptonite are pieces of the planet Krypton that have been made toxic by the destruction of the planet. Different versions of the Superman story give different specifics, but the general idea is the same.

ya kryptonite was from krypton and i believe the atomosphere made it deadly cause in the movie when clark formed the fortress of solitudethe crystal was green so im assuming that it was kryptonite but since it was incased in clarks space ship it was safe from the atmosphere.
as for it being in china it may be revealed in season 5. krypton was more advanced in time then earth is and maybe long ago people on krypton came to earth to hide the stones so evil people on there planet would not find it. so when clark needed to find the crystals maybe the kryptonite in china was a message saying that one of the crystals is here. china is the only place we actually saw where the crystal was and everything around it. the first crystal in the desert we never saw anything around it except for a little section where they found an artifact and the crystal in transference we never saw where that came from so for all we know is that kryptonite was there too.

Not made by the destruction of Krypton, but changed.
"The destruction of Krypton was caused by the native elements fusing together into a new radioactive element called Kryptonium. Kryptonium decays with an unknown half-life into iron giving off unique form of radiation. Kryptonium radiation is relatively harmless to most life forms (through extended exposure can cause death), but is deadly to Kryptonians. It starts by blocking super-powered Kryptonians from using solar energy to power their abilities, it then causes blood poisoning with advance symptoms of hallucinations and eventual death.
Kryptonite is the ore of Kryptonium and is the most widespread form of the element. On Earth the only known fragments of Kryptonite arrived here embedded in the Rocket Ship which brought Kal-El to Earth. The main chunk was used as the fuel source for Metallo before falling into the hands of Lex Luthor. Luthor wore a signet ring set with a sliver of Kryptonite for a time to keep Superman at bay and at other times he has had assassins use Kryptonite bullets against superman."
"Jor-El's independent research led him to discover that the Green Death had being caused by a chain reaction within Krypton, set off long ago by the terrorist group Black Zero, which was creating a new radioactive element called Kryptonium."

In traditional lore Kryptonite was created when the explosion of the planet Krypton irradiated all remnants of the planet. After the 1986 reboot it was maintained that the planet was unstable at its core and internal pressure was irradiating rock and creating Kryptonite or "the green death" as it was known then that people suffered from the exposure to the radiation. After they introduced Black Zero into the comics this explanation was slightly changed as it was then said that the terrorist organization Black Zero had planted a doomsday device in Krypton's core at some time in the past (during Krypton's clone wars if I'm not mistaken) and it was that device and its later malfunction that ultimately led to the instability of the planet's core and the slow irradiation of all of Krypton which was then completed at the time of the explosion.
As for the Kryptonite in China, personally I think that was just sloppy thinking by the writers, but I guess it could be explained as "The Green Death" and its cause being discovered years earlier than it had been in the comics and that being considered the perfect protection in addition to the more traditional means that were used to hide the crystals from mere humans. Since only a Kryptonian could "probably" get past the traditional means used to protect the crystals such as large pieces of stone and maps hidden from all but x-ray eyes then that would keep any unauthorized members of that race at bay.
EDIT: Oops, just saw Timerster's post above. What he said.

Think about Relic, I think the Kryptonians use Earth as a storage for the knowledge of the universe that they've collected. This being the reason why there are their symbols on Earth.

I personally have always thought of Kryptonite as a form of buried radioactive rock on Krypton just as uranium is here on Earth, but such as Clark has super powers under our yellow sun, so does Kryptonite which effects him more so than us because of our different physical make up. Kryptonite does however also affect human as when Lex looses his hand from wearing the ring for too long in the comic book and if ‘Hourglass’ show’s the true future, then so will this Lex, the only question is why doesn’t Lana breast cancer after wearing her necklace for so long.

OH! What the hell is up with Isobel? Wasn't she here to collect the stones AND kill Jason's family? She didn't collect the stones. And Isobel's mark was Kryptonian (i guess Isobel was searching for a kryptonian artifact) but what's the connection.
