Last movies I saw where....

The Break Up - Loved it, but I am a huge Jennifer Aniston fan.
Disney's Cars - Good, but not one of my fave Disney movies.
Davinci Code - It was allright, hard to follow at times I thought :p
United 93 - I really liked it, though it was very disturbing
X-men 3 - Did not like it at all

The Break Up... loved it but I too am a huge Jennifer Aniston fan (plus Vince Vaughn).

Nacho Libre... loved it... but then again I'm a huge Jack Black fan and love all his work so far...

Eight Below... thought it was great, but I do love Paul Walker (catches drool before it lands on keyboard)

March Of the Penguins... thought it was very moving.

Glory Road... really cool, but then again Don Haskins is something big in my hometown...

The Da Vinci Code - Kill the editor - 1 1/2 stars

The Country Girl - Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby prove they can both act - 3 1/2 stars

Over the Hedge - But I like the cookie - 3 stars

Nacho Libre - joyously absurd - 3 stars

The Break Up - surprisingly good, and fair - 3 stars

X-Men 3 - not terrible, until you think about how good it could/should have been - 2 stars

Funny Face - Audrey Hepburn in a bad movie? What?! - 1/2 a star

Face/Off - I'd already seen it, but dammit I love that wonderfully flawed film - 3 stars

Superman Returns-9/10 I was very surprised how much I enjoyed it. There was homage and continuation of the Donner films, but SR is definitely stands on it's own. It's definitely in my top ten of Superhero flicks, but it wasn't perfect like Batman Begins or Daredevil. Still it was pretty decent.

We can talk about tv movies in here right. If they are accessible on dvd?

Love Comes Softly-10/10 I saw this made-for-tv film on the Hallmark Channel a couple of weeks ago. Nothing was really on, but I was quickly hooked by the story and the acting of this film. For those who don't know what it is about here's a summary:

A young woman's dream to forge a new life for herself on the great American plains becomes a test of her pioneering spirit, her inner strength, and her undying faith and courage. By covered wagon, Marty (Katherine Heigl) and Aaron Calridge have come west in search of fortune and a new life. But an unexpected tragedy leaves Marty a widow facing bleak prospects for the future. With a bitter winter season approaching and no safe passage back home, she finds herself stranded yet befriended by settlers Ben Graham and his wife Sarah. They encourage her to take up the recently widowed Clark Davis(Dale Midkiff) on his unusual offer--join him in a temporary marriage of convenience. Marty will have a roof over her head until the spring thaw when she can return home. In the meantime, Clark's nine-year-old daughter Missie will have a teacher. As promised, the arrangement is strictly business. However, teaching Missie, who's still mourning for her mother, becomes as challenging as living with Clark, a young man cut off from his emotions. For three similar people, each grieving for a loved one who they've lost, comfort comes from sharing their pain and hardships. But is it enough to make two lonely spirits recognize what it is that they truely need and want? As the months and seasons pass, and Marty gets closer to the day of her departure, she finally discovers the meaning of courage, her inner faith, a love she never thought possible, and the bittersweet truth in her friend Sarah's sage advice: "Bloom where you're planted." Based on Janette Oke's cherished best-selling series of books, and written and directed by Michael Landon, Jr., this inspiring love story of a more innocent time is illuminated by the same warmth and wisdom that made Little House on the Prairie such enduring family entertainment.

Having Micheal Landon Jr. direct it definitely gave it this Little House feel to it. For a short film that is only an hour and half long their is a lot to it. There is humor, sadness, and love. I'm quite fond of this little movie.

Just watched Glory Road on DVD. It is the story of the Texas Western College basketball team that really broke the color barrier. Pretty decent movie and one of the players was Smallville's own Sam Jones III.

I recently watched:

Last Holiday: I love Queen Latifah and really enjoyed this movie. I thought it was very endearing. :)

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: At first I was like WTF but I stayed watching it and seriously I LMAO... that movie was very cool.

16 Blocks: I don't know why this movie got some bad reviews. But I love Bruce Willis too. I greatly enjoyed it. Good action flick with a good ending.

Saw Click. It's good if you're an Adam Sandler fan, if not then don't bother. i'd give that one a 6/10

I recently watched:

Pirates 2: It is a cool movie, I am a HUGE Johnny Depp fan. I have mixed feelings about this movie though... I think watching it the second time around will decide on the final vote... I still liked the first one a lot more...

Accepted: This movie I really enjoyed!!! I love movies with a good message and this has one.

Scary Movie 4: Um... it was funny... I'm a huge fan of the Scary Movies (even part 2) and this one definitely had its moments when I thought it was hilarious.

V For Vendetta: I will be honest... when I first picked it out to rent, I had no idea what it was about and wasn't sure if I'd like it but I'll tell you what... I thought this movie was awesome!!! Great characters and great story line.

Brick: It has the guy from Third Rock From The Sun (terrible with names). He's been doing a lot of those "independent" films... I thought this movie was really cool though... suspenseful if nothing else... oh and Claire from Lost comes out in here too...

I forgot to mention I saw Snatch for the first time about 2 wks. ago or so... I loved it!! It's a great movie... very funny and entertaining... was it meant to be funny? I don't know... I say things like that and then people get mad... anyway, I'll just say on parts it was supposed to be funny I was rolling... and probably still rolling on parts that weren't supposed to be funny... :p

I watched Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels... and I loved it! I thought it was hilarious... not only is it funny, but it has action, and the characters are awesome with great chemistry...

that one and Snatch have to be two of my favorite movies now...

I've seen it before, but this morning I just finished watching Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind... this movie is incredible... I don't know how some can find it boring or confusing, but oh well... I think it's a lovely movie. Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey have awesome chemistry with each other and it's a movie everyone can relate to... at least I think so.

Reservoir Dogs:
I had heard mainly good things about this film... a great flick by Quentin Tarantino... I trust him and Guy Ritchie completely...
R-Dogs was awesome! It had action, made me laugh, kept me on the edge of my seat... the surprise ending made me go  But still, I think it's one of his best... wait, all his work is great!!!

Rounders... I know it's a few years old, but just got it yesterday and watched it. I thought it was pretty cool. Edward Norton and Matt Damon... need I say more?

In Her Shoes... Yes, a girlie movie... but I do hate to admit... it was a good movie... guys beware... lots of touchy feely moments and much crying... *Good way to scare off most people...* But I do have 2 sisters... so maybe that's why it was appealing :o

I Heart Huckabees... I need to watch it again, had to keep getting up and doing stuff (it was showing on HBO) but I saw most of it and thought it was a great flick... then again an amazing cast! I love Mark Wahlberg and thought it was one of his finest performances... funny :)

The Posedion (sp. that title is about to make me scream.. never looks like I spell it correctly)... I thought it was... um... okay. I mean I watched it all so I guess I didn't think it was that bad...

Friends With Money... I love Jennifer Aniston... and well I don't think any of her movies, or her acting sucks... I found it to be quite realistic... movies about relationships, serious and grown up ones at least, usually tend to be in my opinion...

United 93... :( OMG... so damn sad... I really don't know what else to say about it... didn't leave me feeling anything else but very sad...

Lucky # Slevin
I liked this movie! First of all, great cast. I don't think I've seen a bad movie that Morgan Freeman has come out in. I am a huge Bruce Willis fan at that. I found it more funny than action packed but that was fine by me. It did have great WTF scenes for me though  I think I'm going to buy this movie... I can see myself seeing it a few more times...

Agreed. Here's what I wrote on another forum about it:

A good movie, and enjoyable. I've wanted to see something else with Paul Giamatti since Lady in the Water (way underrated, I'd even be so bold as to say some people didn't like it just because they have a vendetta against Shyamalan), and this one didn't disappoint. It was, however, predictable, and it's been done before, or at least there have been other movies using the exact same formual before. Still, I was rarely bored during the movie, and I loved seeing exactly how the twists and turns worked out (even though I knew what the twists and turns were going to be).

And then I saw The Lake House, which I thought was, well....read it for yourself:

A sweet, mildly enjoyable romance that turns out to be utterly unconvincing and predictable. It had heart, but no soul, to be cliche. It didn't work as Sci-Fi and barely worked as romance. If you want a great Sci-Fi/Romance, read The Time Traveler's Wife, far superior.

Just saw Hollywoodland tonight. I'm really not sure what to think of it. All 3 principle actors did a good job. It was nice how they cut back and forth between prior to Reeves' death and after it. Complex personalities, complex motivations, etc.

It had tits and lots of gore. It gets a 10 out of 10.

Btw, saw 1 & 2 = over rated. Go watch battle royale, much better.

MidgardDragon
09-16-2006, 09:35 PM
I didn't go for tits, I went for gore and a potentially horrifying movie, and got...tits and gore. Those "overrated" movies you mentioned at least had a plot with their gore, which was what I expected in Hostel. But, again, tits and gore. :/ Sorry, but if I want tits, I'll watch a porn. It's great for 80's horror cheese or movies that are trying to recreate that to have boob-shots, but that wasn't what Hostel was trying to be, so it made no sense. I guess I'm just not the type of guy who will give a movie a 10/10 because it showed boobies. Even movies featuring some of the best pairs and best sex scenes I've ever seen don't get a 10/10, because the rest of those movies were crap. I'd say tits and gore alone nets a movie about a 2/10, and since Hostel would've gotten a 1 for me without them, it would've gotten a 3/10.

And I plan on watching Battle Royale, but after watching Ichi the Killer on a similar recommendaton, I have a feeling I will be sorely disappointed. Saying Saw is "overrated" seems to be the "in" thing to do, go figure that good movies continue to take flak. Luckily, Hostel is generally viewed as the crap it is, so I haven't quite lost my faith in the masses just yet. ^^

I went for gore... and Igot gore. I didn't go for a plot, I went for mindless gore. And it's what I got. The Movie seriously had a very bad plot yes but at least all the gore scenes were gorey. Saw's were not. Saw's were laughable at.

I don't go by what the masses or reviewers say. I watch a movie and make my own reccomendation. **** everyone else.

MidgardDragon
09-16-2006, 10:15 PM
Heh,well I agree with the last part, at least. But seriously, if they had sold this as the laughable gore fest that it was, I might not have complained, but they sold it as a followup by the people who made Saw, which were very entertaining movies with great plot and great gore (no matter what you say :P).

Sandra, been forever... :)

Water- Sad movie... very heart-breaking... about widows in India in 1938... focuses on a 7 yr. old (if I'm not mistaken) widow in particular...

Hard Candy- I found this one quite disturbing... made me cringe... it's about a teenage girl who meets a man from the Internet... weird twist...

London- interesting enough movie about a guy and the love of his life... she's leaving out of the country and he crashes her going away party...

Don't Come Knocking- Strange... about an actor who up and leaves the set one day where he's filming a movie to get back in touch with his mother whom he hasn't seen in like 30 years... finds out about a son he never knew he had...

Just saw The Matador with Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear.

The real reason to watch it is for Pierce. He takes the image of James Bond and shoves it down everyone's throat and proves that he was the best damn thing in the last four 007 movies for a reason - the man can act. I've seen Evelyn, and he was pretty good in that one, but man is he awesome in Matador. Just... wow. Watch him cry at the end - you can't force that.

The movie itself is, well, different than what I thought it would be. The critics and the trailer made me think it'd be laughter all the way through. In actuality, it's a little more thought out. The humor is subtle, but I would say just shy from actually being considered "clever".

Lots of sex and swearing throughout, so that was mildly entertaining. I want to like the movie, but ultimately, I liked Pierce Brosnan's performance more than any of the content.

It's not bad, but it really didn't fit what I thought it was going to be. I have to knock it a few points down for that.

6.5/10

I'm getting ready to go see The Prestige this weekend, so I figured, since it's directed by the awesome Christopher Nolan, why not go back and check out his earlier works?

As such, I just saw Following - it's his very first feature film, made independently on a budget of about $6,000. It's very similar to his follow-up, Memento, in that it's told out of chronological order and there are sudden twists towards the end. It's not told backwards like Memento, but the scenes are revealed in a way that it almost seems like you're watching two different parts of the main character's life - Before Meeting Cobb, and After Meeting Cobb.

As you keep watching, you realize that's not quite the matter.

It was definitely intriguing, and I thought the black-and-white picture set a good, mysterious mood (I'll always prefer color, though - give me blues, browns, and grays over blacks and whites any day). It's slow at the beginning, but things pick up quick at the end.

I give it a 7.5/10

Saw The Prestige the other night. It was a really good movie but was totally not what I had expected. I won't elaborate so as not to give away the plot but I will say that competition between the two magicians is not a very accurate term. I left the movie with lots of questions and I think that is what the director wanted.

First of all, I like Adam Sandler. Whether he's in a serious role (Punch Drunk Love) or Romantic Comedy (Spanglish... wouldn't that be considered a RC?) or his usual roles (Happy Gilmore, Mr. Deeds, etc.) I just find him funny.

I don't know what it was about this movie... the fact that everyone can relate to what the theme of the movie is about... wishing we could have a remote control to manipulate certain things in our lives... I walked away with a different outlook on my life... maybe the movie isn't meant to be taken that seriously, but it did have a profound effect on me...

Kate Beckinsale is gorgeous and I really adored her character. I thought they had good chemistry. At first I was surprised they'd chose her for the role. I was under the impression this was a comedy and I don't remember seeing her in any before.

Christopher Walken can make any movie better, in my opinion. To show you what a HUGE fan I am... I loved him in Joe Dirt and Envy  He can go from playing a hardened criminal to a goofy, almost mad scientist  That's talent.

I bought this movie without having watched it first. It was between that one and Lucky Number Slevin (which I love!!) but I don't regret buying this one. I would highly recommend it and only hope that others can walk away with some of what I got out of it...

Just My Luck-
Was never a Lindsay Lohan fan but I think her acting isn't that bad. I'm interested in seeing her in "Bobby" but on with J.M.L. I thought it was cute and had its moments of funny.

She's The Man-
This was another cute one that made me laugh a lot. I think Amanda Bynes is goofy but in a cute way.

High School Musical-
I couldn't get into this movie but at least it was a sweet one for families.

Cow Belles-
I thought this one was cute too. My niece brought over her movie collection, if you couldn't tell  It had a good message for teenagers.

Shrek The Third - 7/10

I liked it. It wasn't nearly as funny as the first two, and also seems to have lost some charm. Puss in Boots is still the funniest, but has less to do. Overall, I laughed the hardest during a preview for Bee Movie before Shrek started.

Spider-Man 3: 6/10, entertaining but falls well short of the first two and any expectations I might have had for it - the mistreatment of Venom will forever be a scar on the franchise

Shrek the Third: 6.5/10, entertaining and nothing terribly wrong with it except that I didn't really laugh that much - they also missed opportunities to make scenes funnier by making obvious references to other films and then didn't for whatever reason, which was completely odd... it was like they setup the joke and then never bothered saying the punchline

Little Miss Sunshine - 6.5/10, entertaining, mostly for its shock value and quirkiness, but the kind of film that I never have to see again

The Prestige - 7.5/10, good movie, but I figured out the surprise ending WAY in advance, which ruined the ending for me

'Pirates' Fails to Claim Box Office Treasure

New Pirates Of The Caribbean sequel, At World's End, appears to have fallen short of reclaiming its place in the U.S. box office record books - but Johnny Depp and his crew are still celebrating. The second sequel has scored an estimated $112.5 million in its opening weekend, although official figures won't be released until after Memorial Day. The figure, though impressive, is well below last summer's $135.6 million opening weekend take for Pirates sequel Dead Man's Chest. And it's way short of Spider-Man 3's record-breaking $151.1 million opening weekend earlier this month. But the Pirates won't exactly be walking the plank - At World's End scored the fifth-biggest three-day opening ever. The film has also made an additional $205.5 million internationally since it hit cinemas worldwide on Wednesday. The sequel easily tops the new U.S. box office chart, which is led by the third films in three franchises. Shrek the Third comes in second with an impressive $51 million second-weekend take, while Spider-Man 3 holds on to third place with $13.7 million. The third Spider-Man film has now notched up $303.3 million in America alone - in just a month. The movie's worldwide figure has already topped $800 million.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - 4/10

I loved the first two Pirates movies, but this one bored me to tears. On top of that, there were too many plotlines that were unnecessary and I just didn't care about at all. It was also WAAAAAY too long. I also couldn't get into the finale action sequence at all. In an effort to go bigger and badder, they took a wrong turn and ended up at ridiculous. Spider-Man 3 was disappointing for me, but entertaining. Shrek the Third was disappointing, but at least short and sweet. Pirates just wasn't enjoyable for me. Oh well... I can still enjoy the first two.

Ah... how hype affects a film.

I've never seen The Godfather. I've read the book and played the video game, but I have never ever seen the movie until last night. I was expecting a pretty good one, since it's frequently ranked the #1 movie of all time, won an Oscar, etc. and I loved the book. The book was fantastic.

Maybe reading the book is what did it, because I couldn't stop thinking about how much got cut out from the book while I was watching (I'm aware that some of it made it into Part II, though). The acting is great, however, the casting is pretty spot on, and there are really no problems outside of technical ones (voices not matching mouths). It was a good movie... but Mario Puzo is better at creating tension in his novel than Francis Ford Coppola is in his movie, like when Michael is trying to find out the condition of his father.

Just came back from Ocean's Thirteen.

Unquestionably better than the second, 13 kind of stutters around for the first two thirds and has an almost untolerable middle. It gets downright boring.

And yet, it manages to pull everything together for a great finale and you realize that everything that happened in the beginning and the middle was just a big set-up for the end. It wraps up everything nicely and has one of the greatest endings to a movie I've ever seen, in a warm happy-feely kind of way. It is a bit contrived, especially one of the plot twists in particular, but nothing that's really unbelievable IMO.

But a movie is more than its ending, so I still have to knock it for the slow start and underdevelopment of Bernie Mac's character.

A solid 7.5/10.

Hollywoodland - 6.5

One of the less impressive biopics I've seen recently - but to be fair, that's not what it's striving to be. The script is hard to follow, with dialogue that's off ("You're a fool!"), and a pretty uneventful ending. Even the most powerful scene (IMO), where George talks a kid out of shooting him, ends too abruptly.

The acting is fairly solid, but I was sad to see that I couldn't buy Ben Affleck as George Reeves. With Leonardo DiCaprio, I could buy him as Howard Hughes. I could buy Selma Hayek as Frida Kahlo. Johnny Depp played a great Ed Wood and Jim Carrey was fantastic as Andy Kaufman. But regardless of whether they accurately portrayed what the real person was like, at least they managed to immerse themselves into the role. Ben Affleck does not achieve that, and everytime he was on screen, I could only think, "There goes Ben Affleck." It wasn't the deal-breaker for this movie, but it hurt it.

Considering that the mystery surrounding Reeves' death IS fascinating, I'd like to see a film in the future that approaches the material far more head-on, hopefully with a more conclusive ending. If indeed the mystery is ever solved.

Ratatouille - 9/10 - A brilliantly constructed, sweet, endearing film that once again proves that Brad Bird is working at a different level. Funny and fresh, another Pixar classic. Also funny, the short film "Lifted" that accompanies it.

Live Free or Die Hard - 8/10 - Halfway through you realize, "Wow, I'm watching a new Die Hard movie... and it's GOOD!" Bruce Willis once again proves why he is a movie star. The action is solid, if over the top, and John Maclane is simply a fun character to follow around while things are blowing up.

Transformers - 4/10 - Without a doubt the best special effects work on such a large scale in the history of motion pictures, but not even ILM can save the film from its paperthin recycled storylines, Michael Bay's awful directing (stop shaking the camera and use a freaking long shot every once in a while jackass), misplaced humor, and terrible characterizations. Gave me a headache.

Ahhh... where would America be without the jolly plump man who enlightens the public through his documentaries which are full of his special brand of sarcasm and wit? Michael Moore once said during Fahrenheit 9/11's release that someone praised him and his movie not for its explicit message and opening the eyes of the public, but because it was a genuinely good movie, and Moore was flattered because he said if he wanted to make a difference, he'd become a politician - not a filmmaker.

So if we judge SiCKO based on that guideline, then the result is a message that is loud, clear, and certainly relevant, but as a movie, it's been-there done-that territory. We get it: America's healthcare system sucks. But the documentary guides you through the expected tragic stories, footage of American families from the 50's, and a finger pointed at Bush. Thankfully, Moore also points out that the problem leads all the way back to Nixon (though I had a problem with an odd conversation between Nixon and another official that was followed by the reveal that Nixon implemented a new plan for Healthcare the very next day after the conversation occured).

Of course, by now everyone knows that Moore goes to other countries to see what they're doing right. Some will be miffed that it portrays their systems as glamorous compared to ours, especially since Moore makes no mention of the drawbacks other than a throwaway line by Moore stating that the English are "drowning in taxes".

Moore's sarcasm is also starting to get on my nerves. When he simply tries to be funny, he can pull off a couple of good lines, especially during his conversations with the many people he interviews. But his sarcasm is heavy-handed and frankly, I'm kind of tired of it. I think I'm supposed to be part of the generation that embraces sarcasm as a powerful language tool to express dissatisfaction and is a staple of teen culture - hell, I use it all the time - but I can't stand listening to it for 2 hours.

Moore's movie shows that thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people are screwed over by the Healthcare Insurance companies. So chances are you just might be one of them. If you're not, you'll probably need to see this movie to realize how much deep doo-doo we're in, and have allowed us to wallow in. If you have been screwed over, then this movie will show you the perks of Universal health care in other countries, and is also occasionally pretty funny. It will also show you a website where you can "Hook a Canuck" for the Canadian healthcare benefits.

SiCKO - 7/10

I'm a cheap kinda' guy. And $9.25 is way too much to pay for entrance to a crowded movie where who knows if I'll get a seat. So for the last three blockbusters, I went before noon, when tickets are $5. Never had a problem getting a seat in the center as far back as I wanted for Spider-Man 3, Pirates 3, or Shrek 3. But today when I went to see Transformers - damn, EVERYBODY was willing to give up their Saturday morning to see this movie for 5 bucks.

And by golly it was worth it.

Transformers - 7.5/10 on the general movie scale, 9/10 on the summer non-stop action movie scale.

Saw Transformers. My two boys--15 & 11 loved it. It's a great movie to just revel in the special effects and action. It was also a lot funnier than I expected it to be. However, if you're looking for depth rather than action this is not the movie for you.

Also, rented Notes on a Scandal and Half Nelson. Notes on a Scandal is a pretty psychologically intense movie about obsession with great acting by Cate Blanchett & Judi Dench. Pretty good film 7/10--not great. I rented Half Nelson to see what all the buzz was about on Ryan Gosling's acting. He did a really good job--Oscar nomination caliber I'm not so sure about or maybe it was just that I didn't much like the movie. This is one of those movies where nothing much happens. You keep waiting for some revelation or for the characters to have some sort of catharsis and it never happens. 3/10.

Transformers - 10/10 for the pure spectacle and fun of it all. Mindless fun is still fun.

1408 - 9/10 for a great psychological King adaptation worthy of the big screen. It's been a long time since we've seen any great King adaptations.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - This translated the best to a movie out of any of the books, although it also followed the book much less closely than the others. 9/10

Spiderman 3: Such a big disappointment, especially since the first two films were excellent. The movie was overlong, had too many villians (they could have cut out either Venom or Sandman, and the movie would have been better.) On the plus side, James Franco gives a great performance as Harry Osborn. 5/10

License To Wed: Saw this at the drive-in as a double feature with Harry Potter. The movie was actually better than I anticipated. Robin Williams is thankfully restrained, John Krasinski was pretty fun, and Mandy Moore was adorable. Not great, but not bad, either. 7/10

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix: This movie was amazing. It was fun, and the plot was definately the best out of the Potter films so far. Daniel Radcliff and Emma Watson steal the show. Also, Ralph Fiennes is an appropriately menacing Lord Valdemort. 9.5/10

Hairspary: This movie is pure fun from beginning to end. I was laughing and smiling throughout the entire movie. Nikki Blonsky is a pure joy as Tracey. Amanda Bynes was hilarious as Penny, Michelle Pfeiffer was deliciously b!tchy as Velma, and it was a blast watching James Marsden play such an over-the-top TV show host. And who knew that Bynes, Pfeiifer, and Marsden could not only sing, but sing so WELL?! John Travolta in drag was a blast as well. Best movie of the year, BY FAR. 10/10

Big Trouble - 7/10

There are some books that fans want to be adapted page for page onto the big screen and there are others that either shouldn't be adapted at all or majorly revamped when they make the leap. Dave Barry's Big Trouble falls in the latter. It was a hilarious book with a plot that worked as a novel, but as a whole it makes for an uneven film. The small changes they did make (Jeanne Garfolo's character not jumping onto the plane) are negligible, so people who did want to see entire scenes acted out on the big screen, here it is. It's an extremely faithful adaptation.

Except for the casting. Everyone except for Patrick Warburton (who I swear this part was written for) and the girl who plays Nina, is horribly miscast. Jason Lee plays a part that was, if you read the book, probably meant for Jason Alexander. Tim Allen is unremarkable as Arnold Elliot. And Stanley Tucci does a good job acting, but still isn't who I envisioned Arthur Herk to be.

The Invasion - 7.5/10

Don't listen to the reviews. If you're looking for a chilling interpretation of your typical alien movie, check this one out. I actually cared about the main characters, and you can sense the urgency and despair that they all feel as they try and evade the "body snatchers".

There are only two significant problems with the movie: one, entire portions of the movie were reshot to inlude parts rewritten by the Wachowski Brothers, and if you've seen any of the Matrix movies, you'll immediately recognize the scenes they wrote. This includes a very unsubtle dinner scene in which a guest smacks the viewer over head with an analogy of the aliens invading Earth and the U.S.'s occupation in Iraq. The entire movie is accompanied with footage and coverage of the ongoing war in Iraq. The ending even implies that, despite a de-occupation of Iraq courtesy of alien-controlled officials, we go right back in there after this is all over.

The ending in general is also a big problem for the movie, because it feels unsatisfying and very rushed, complete with a cheesy call-back to the dinner scene asking the audience if we were really better off without the peaceful but controlling aliens. It's too heavy-handed.

Otherwise, it's a good film. Nicole Kidman's acting in particular is moving, because you really feel her love for her son.

The amusing part, however, is drawing comparisons between this film and her ex-husband Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds, also a remake of a fifty's movie helmed by a director known for WWII movies and starring the respective actors as divorced parents attempting to escape aliens while protecting a young child. The ultimate difference is that THe Invasion wont end up making nearly as much money as WotW.

I know this is a "seen any GOOD movies lately" thread, but I had to add this in...

Superbad - 2/10 - The only thing that this movie adequately accomplishes in any way is to illustrate just how incredibly stupid and juvenile not only our youth can be, but our future. There are funny moments, but there is nothing funny about this movie. Its strength is actually in its sadness and not in the stunningly tacked on and cliche "plotlines" that are thrown together here and there with awful dialogue that has no subtlety whatsoever. This movie feel more like a bunch of 30-somethings reminiscing about how stupid partying "back in the day" was by throwing together a few anecdotes and taking them to the extreme. You could actually hear the writers saying to themselves "You know what would be funny?" before each punchline.

Superbad is, to this day, the only movie that I have EVER walked out on before it ended (there was only about 10 minutes left, but I didn't care).

I guess on some level, I should be applauding it for making the party scene that I have always found distasteful look as painfully horrible as it does. On the other hand, the film itself feels like I'm at one of those painfully horrible parties, hanging out with a bunch of ignorant kids. Superbad gets no love from me, at all, and here is where I make the obligatory: Superbad is SUPER BAD.

I feel like sometimes people think we want more "sophisticated" comedy. You're seeing less and less three camera, "traditional" sitcoms, and more single-camera, story-heavy, character-driven "dramedies" on TV. Gone are the days when Seinfeld was enough to be considered "witty" and now we expect "clever, sophisticated" writing to consist of long conversations, ingenious quips, and sarcastic characters with biting remarks that make poignant statements about the society we live in. And in movies, we've been seeing the same thing for a while - movies about drunken antics and unfunny parodies of popular genres notwithstanding. Comedies with heavy stories and sarcastic people are rampant. Ha, ha, ha.

They're good for what they are, but they're becoming less and less funny the more common they are. The standard to be considered a comedy has reached an incredible low, IMO. Thank You For Smoking, for example, is actually considered a comedy. But I digress.

Which is why I liked Mr. Bean's Holiday - it's light on story, heavy on gags, and heartwarming all the while. There's no real message or meaning to this movie, which might upset satire fans. It's just about an oafish Englishman trying to get to the Cannes beach and enjoy a vacation. But as luck would have it, every thinkable obstacle stands in his way.

It's unbelievable. Improbable. Maybe a little sappy, but I didn't think so.

If seeing wacky foreigners with thick accents get into big messes (think Borat) doesn't make you laugh, you probably won't like this movie. But if you're a fan of the Bean television show, the first Bean movie, or you just want to laugh at simple, but inspired, mostly physical comedy - you'll like this movie.

That's interesting superbrat. I see the commercials and the trailer for "Bean" and can only think: This movie looks incredibly stupid. In fact, most of the comedy movies I see advertised have me saying the same thing. All the movies my 11 & 15 year-old boys think look hilarious and love once they see them, I wouldn't waste my money on.

Quite honestly, it seems like comedies these days are created for that age group and I personally like smart & witty comedy rather than one's that shoot for the lowest common denominator and are filled with scatalogical humor (for those who don't know that word, it basically means "potty" humor).

I'm missing movies like "Big", "Young Frankenstein", "A Fish Called Wanda", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", etc.

Someone please start making "intelligent" comedies!

I love comedies that are smart and witty. The problem is that they're all starting to be more and more alike. It feels like everytime you see a character on TV or in a movie that is sarcastic, they instantly become "classic". How is that NOT pandering to the audience? Case in point - Chloe Sullivan off Smallville. Now, I admit, I liked her at first. She was a good character. But the main draw behind her fanbase is her snarkiness and sarcastic comments. Then Veronica Mars hit the air and everyone loved her for her own sarcasm. And it's not just those two examples - every comedy I see tends to have the obligatory sarcastic character with "witty" lines. And in the case of Smallville, they've become less and less witty and more and more obscure or stupid.

I'm targeting sarcastic characters in particular, if that's not clear.

As for Mr. Bean's Holiday - it's from Britain, so it's almost guaranteed to have a level of subtlety that American comedies tend not to have. There is tons of physical humor, but it's not Jackass: The Movie, which is as low as lowest common denominator gets. As a show of how much more sophisticated it is, there are actually subtitles throughout half of the movie. Yes, you're going to have to read, but it's not as bad as I make it sound. There are clever lines, too - like when a stewardess compliments Bean for his grasp of the French language and he replies in Spanish. There are other jokes based on the characters not understanding each other.

Some people will get turned off by Rowan Atkinson's portrayal. I know that. Not everyone liked the Mr. Bean television series. But if you did like it, and if you don't mind clever, physical comedy, you'll like Holiday.

Someone please start making "intelligent" comedies!
I'd be interested to know what you in particular consider "intelligent" because I'd love to make one.

Well, superbrat, I wasn't intending to come off as insulting. I'm sorry if you felt that way. You sound like you have a pretty good
grasp of what I'm talking about. I'll admit that I have a particular genre of comedy in mind when I'm talking about "stupid" comedy. On principle alone, and I could actually miss something that I might not hate--but I doubt it, I refuse to go to any movie starring Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, etc. I have had several movies recommended to me as very funny and I hated them---Meet the Parents and Wedding Crashers to name just two. I named a few of the comedies that I have really enjoyed and all of them have "intelligent", "witty" or inventive moments to them. Another favorite smart comedy was Bull Durham.

Like I said, extreme silliness or bathroom humor is just not that funny to me--but my boys love it. They think Talledega Nights, Accepted, and Jackass are just a hoot. It seems to me that these are about the only kinds of comedies being made these days (besides romantic comedies) and I think it's sad.

As for Mr. Bean, I have to admit that I have never seen the TV show. I know that British humor tends to be very dry and much different than our American style of humor but there has been nothing in the trailers I've seen for Holiday that particularly attracted me either. It all looks a bit too absurd for my taste--i.e. the bicycle moving faster than the cars. Rowan Atkinson was pretty funny as the priest in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" though.

Ah well, that's what makes life interesting though isn't it. We all have such different likes and dislikes and it would certainly be boring if we all thought the same way.

Oh and about that snarky or sarcastic sidekick/character, that is nothing new. How about Rhoda on the Mary Tyler Moore show, Danny on the Partridge Family, or Maude on All in the Family. I'm afraid the concept's been around for a long time and is probably not going to go anywhere. Besides, I love Chloe. Yes she's sarcastic (as is Lois) but Chloe has such a wonderful vulnerability to her as well.

Anyway, we're here to talk about movies we've seen lately. I rented Zodiac recently and although it's a pretty good movie it is extremely slow moving and probably longer than it needed to be. Maybe they did that on purpose to parallel the fact that the mystery of who the killer was has never been completely put to rest and the investigation took many years. It's an okay film but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it at the theater. 7/10

All I can tell you is that Mr. Bean's Holiday is NOT like Accepted, Talladega Nights, or Jackass. There is physical humor, but that's the only thing they all have in common. Since you say you don't like extreme silliness, I doubt you'll like it anyway, but to put Jackass or Accepted and Mr. Bean in the same category is nothing less than insulting to Mr. Atkinson. It's certainly okay with me that he's not your cup of tea, but then, I don't like Edgar Allen Poe either. I still hold him in way higher regard than most modern authors.

As for movies like Young Frankenstein and Ferris Bueller, I would frankly put Bean in the same league. Maybe not this particular movie, but the character in general. I did like those movies, but they each have their own degree of extreme silliness - especially Young Frankenstein.

I don't mind sarcastic characters. Jerry Seinfeld is my #1 top favorite sarcastic character of all time. Comic Book Guy is #2. I just don't like how they've oversaturated the media now. There are too many, and have become token or obligatory.

But back to movie reviews: saw Shaun of the Dead. As with Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright's other notable project, there is great fun here, but I feel that, like Hot Fuzz, he just gets way too serious at the end. The comedy is always prevalent, but the seriousness in tone doesn't remain steady and sometimes blatantly eclipses the jokes. But because it's shorter, I liked Shaun more than Fuzz

Grindhouse - I should probably review them as separate movies. Planet Terror was wickedly cool, and all the stuff Rodriguez threw in to make it look old was effective and I really liked it. What I didn't like was when the reel went missing when it did. THAT pissed me off. Fortunately, there was an obvious leap of time and it gave a sense of you missing an entire section of plot and not just a sex scene.

Death Proof was unbelievably boring. The way Quentin Tarantino handled his "missing reel" was obviously just to tease the audience and not show the lap dance. That just made me mad. The conversations are long. Kurt Russell disappears for a good while in the second half before finally showing up again. And by the time Zoe is talking to Jasper about buying the car, you're wondering if you're still even watching the same movie. I can name other flaws, but unlike Planet Terror, none of them were charming.

Suck on that, Tarantino.

I went and saw "Across The Universe" yesterday, and found it to be underwhelming. Some of the musical numbers were brilliant (Helter Skelter, Come Together, All You Need Is Love, It Won't Be Long, Blackbird, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Strawberry Fields Forever, and Hey Jude come to mind.) However, the rest of the movie was just not very good. The imagery became tiring after the first hour, it dragged on way too long, and the characters just weren't that interesting. A huge disappointment. (6/10)

I also saw "Sydney White." While not great by any measure, it certainly was a pleasant enough diversion. I only went and saw this for Amanda Bynes, whom I've liked for quite a while. Although, Smallville fans, it was hard not to screams "Oh my God! Johnathan Kent!!!" when John Schneider came onscreen (I'm such a geek!) (7/10)

"The Brave One" was excellent. Jodie Foster was fantastic in this movie, and I couldn't take my eyes off the screen for the entire two hours of the movie. I was so impressed with "The Brave One." Its my second favorite movie of the year, right behind "Hairspray!" (9.5/10)

Bee Movie

Say what you will, I thought it was great. Maybe it didn't live up to the hype and yes, the acting is horribly overexaggerated (I'm looking at you, Patrick Warburton), but I still thought it was a very well-produced, and well-written movie.

8/10

Bee Movie - 7/10 - I'm sure that anyone could pick this movie apart relatively easily, and I was sitting in the movie theater saying to myself (and my date) that "this is completely ridiculous". But guess what? I laughed, and had a great time. Highly entertaining movie.

American Gangster - 8/10 - About 20 minutes too long, but Denzel and Crowe prove once again why they are as good as it gets in Hollywood.

I just saw "Enchanted" yesterday, and it was actually a really fun movie. Amy Adams was adorable and believable as the princess, and James Marsden was hysterical as the prince. Also, Susan Sarandon was a hoot as the evil queen. Patrick Dempsey was pretty good too, just not as good as Adams or Marsden. This was just a lighte-hearted, fun movie that I personally enjoyed very much. (9/10)

A V P 2- I dont know why i saw this LOL i was just going to see my friends and it so happens they are into this crap. 3/10 only becuase the acting was so bad, it was funny. I can't believe I wasted almost $10 on this

Sweeney Todd- 10/10 I basically loved everything about this movie.

I Am Legend, 9/10. Pretty much stuck to the Omega Man story line, with a few twists. The 9's for Will Smith's acting, he was superb in what was basically a one man show. The CG wasn't bad either.

I Am Legend - 7/10 - Will Smith. He's that good, folks. Heavy points off, though, for re-watchability... which it lacks.

Charlie Wilson's War - 5/10 - I'm told it was weak on the historical content, but I didn't know that. What I do know is that the movie had pretty weak dramatic structure. No thanks.

National Treasure 2 - 6/10 - It only gets a better rating than CWW because it was more "fun"... but it's as weak in structure, historical content, and logic.

Futurama: Bender's Big Score - 3/10 - It's hard to believe that a movie based on one of my all time favorite shows could turn into such a mess and be... gasp... so unfunny.

Justice League: New Frontier - 9/10 - I can't ask for more or better... Correction... I can ask for more. Someone at WB needs to lift the 75 minute runtime restriction like now.

I saw Cloverfield opening day - I liked it a lot. Interesting movie but if you're going with the one thought that you need to be blown away then you won't be - you should go and have the goal of having fun and a good movie experience and then you'll enjoy the movie :)

I watched alien vs. predator: requiem and alvin and the chipmunks last night. Jason Lee makes any movie, yo. and predator vs. requiem is one that I think anyone should see, as it's probably the best alien movie to have come out in years. which isn't saying much. but it's certainly better than AvP and Alien: Resurrection.

Cloverfield and I Am Legend. I Am Legend is good until the end, but the ending sucks. Cloverfield is excellent all the way through.

Backward Galaxy

Cloverfield - 4/10 - I can't really find any redeeming qualities that don't have to do with the effects work. The characters had dubious motives at best, the direction was implausibly infuriating and vomit inducing, and every single thing that this movie did was done better in a different movie. Lame.

Sliding Doors with Gweneth Paltrow was amazing. It was made in 1998, and it's the best chick flick I've seen in a while. Gweneth's character finds out her boyfriend has been cheating on her, and part of her decides to move on and become a better person, and the other part of her is oblivious to everything. I cried.

I rewatched the original Matrix. Holy crap talk about forgetting what an awesome movie that was. I can't believe such a quality movie had such crappy sequels. Ah well, just goes to prove that crappy sequels don't effect the original, as The Matrix is still there and still awesome in spite of said sequels.

Well, let's see. Juno was a really fun movie. I thought it was smart and charming and am glad it has done so well.

Enchanted---lots of fun, Amy Adams was incredible in this movie. She really made you believe she was a cartoon character come to life.

Atonement--don't see what all the hype's about. It kept my attention but was ultimately unsatisfying for me. I would have liked to have seen more development between Keira Knightly's character and James McAvoy's character because it was hard for me to believe their overwhelming "love" for each other given the little we saw of their relationship prior to being torn apart. I was fascinated with the recurring typewriter sound effects however.

Rented Stardust and it was really good. DeNiro was truly funny in this movie and the story was really interesting.

Breach was really good--Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillipe traiter spy drama based on a real life mole.
Fracture with Ryan Gosling and Anthony Hopkins was also very good.

Not really a movie, but I have been watching Stargate SG-1 on dvd. It's really cool and has great continuity from season to season.
