The movie comes out Apr.29.This book and its sequal 'The Restaurant at the End of the Universe' are 2 of the best books I ever read.Science fiction, fantasy, time travel, paradoxes and very humorous as well.I hope the film captures the spirit of the book-maybe if its a success, theyre make the 2nd book as well.
Actualy its a 5 book series.I read the 3rd book-'Life,the Universe and Everything'-but I didnt think it was nearly as good as the 1st 2 books.Should be interesting to see how well it does at the theaters, considering its not nearly as well known as say 'Star Wars' or 'Star Trek'.Well,DONT PANIC-and make sure u always have a towel!

you can't just go out giving numbers like that, next thing you know you will be telling everyone that all they need to do to fly is to miss the ground and then look at the mess we will have in the skies.

I am reading the books for the first time now. I got the Ultimate Guide which has all the books in it. There is a definte change in the books after Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

The anwser is ......42

"We are going to get lynched are't we?"

I also posted in another forum that Alan Rickman will place the voice of Marvin. I think it is a good fit.

axisoftime
03-30-2005, 07:10 PM
Yeh thats great that Alan Rickman (prof.Snape) is going to be Marvin-the 'paranoid android'.Ok-u posted the answer-42-but the big thing is'Whats the question'?lol. Now that u probably shouldnt post,or if anyone does-use the spoiler tag.

What is funny about 42 is I knew about that long before I even heard of the books. I think any one into sci-fi knows about 42 with or with out the book. It is so used in sci-fi you almost have to read the book or refrence it to know why it pops up every where.

The movie looks like it will be fun. I never read the book or even knew it existed untill the trailer came up a few months ago.

i recently saw on PBS, some of the old tv shows from the uk, i think they were from the 70's they were really REALLY bad.

luthorsmentor

yeah, by todays standards the old uk thing was absolutely horrible, though i still laughed my a$$ off at it. hopefully the movie will do the books justice.

Maybe theyll show that old british series again when the movie opens.Id like to see it.Ford Prefect-Zaphod Beeblebrox-Slartabartfast-great characters. Will they show the triple
breasted whore? And just how many uses are there for a towel anyway? And the scenes with the Heart of Gold should be very cool.

The answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything is easy: 42. The question is a lot more complicated, though. You'll have to read the books to get what you're looking for there, as it's not something anyone can summarize.

I'll give you some completely useless hints though:

The good news is, as a human being, the question is all around you. The bad news is, you'll never know the question, exactly. :)

I was responding to a previous post who wasnt sure what the number was-then I stated if anyone posted the question to put a spoiler tag in case someone hadnt read the book.As I stated previously-Im a big fan-of the 1st 2 books anyway-and u r right-its complicated.

Man had always thought he was smarter then dolphins because he had achieved so much, the wheel,New York, wars, and so on-while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water, having a good time. But conversly, dolphins believed themselves to be more intelligent then man for precisely the same reasons.

went to see sin city today which had a trailer for The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. that is quite possibly the best trailer for a movie that i'd ever seen.

I went to my local library to pick up the book, so i could read it before i saw the movie, and they didn't have it!

I thought that it was manditory for every library to have at least one copy in their Sci Fi Section.

I have seen 3 or 4 different trailers for it. They range from dark and mysterious to comedic.
Sam Rockwell is going to be an awesome Zaphod.

Although they do look like they put a romatic element in.

Either way I am excited.

2 more online reviews give it a thumbs up-looking good!

Yeh,they did put in a romantic element-a triangle involving Arthur-Zaphod-Trilian.It wasnt reaaly touched on in the book-apparently Douglas Adams added a few things to the original story b4 he passed away.

They probably want to see how this pans out first. It might only apeal to a limited auidence. I would like to see Restaurant but I wasn't to hot on LtUaE. As much as I like all his books. (I am on So Long and Thanks for all the Fish). His work kind of dropped after book 2 or at least had a different tone. I have also heard nothing to stellar about Mostly Harmless. The rumor is that he was supposed to put out a follow up book but he passed away suddenly before he could get it out. Most peole say stop after book for and don't go in to 5. I guess I will give more info after I finish them. Salmon of Doubt is a collection of notes and scribbles that were suppsed to be transformed into the last book.

Its a crime against humanity. The 5 or 6 books in THHGTTG are the funniest I have ever read. the other Douglas Adams books are premier writing as well. Can't wait for the movie!

I wanted to post this yesterday, but I was really busy. Anyway, Monday night I got to go to an advance screening of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Here in San Francisco, the Bay Guardian was giving out free tickets to see the film, and I was able to go see it with my dad.

There were hundreds of people lined up outside to see the film, but we were some of the last people to get in. There were probably only a half dozen people behind us who got in. I felt really bad for all the people behind us, because everyone had been waiting a while to see it. It was touch and go for a few minutes, and I wasn't even sure we would get in.

Anyway, the film is fantastic! I'm a big Hitchhiker's fan, and it was so great to see one of my favorite books on screen. They really did justice to the story. The acting is superb, and the special effects are amazing. I'm really hoping that they're going to make films for all the sequels.

Well, I am glad the did not try to condense the entire series into a single movie.

Although, all 5 books together are shorter than just about any Harry Potter book, save the first one, so who knows...they probably could have.

If Hitchhikers Guide is a success Im sure theyre at least make Restaurant at the End of the Universe-which is every bit as good as Hitchhiker. If they ever get to the 3rd book-Life the Universe and Everything-I hope they find a way to vastly improve it-I havent read it in a long time-but I couldnt get into that 'bistromics' or whatever that thing was called.Perhaps they can combine the 3rd book with 'Young Zaphod' and 'So Long and Thanks For All the Fish'-and make it a trilogy.

Well the reviews are about as mixed as can be.Some say its great-classic,while others say it dosent capture the spirit of the books. Some reviewers said only fans will like it-others say fans will be dissapointed.1 guy said 'bring a towel-so youll have something to cry into' lol.I like reading reviews, even though of course it is merely someones opinon-u really have to judge it for yourself.I didnt like the fact that they say they took out the 'subtle british wit' and made the jokes much more obvious. And that the director is mostly known for 'in your face music videos'.Reminds me of that guy that directed 'Catwoman' lol.

I watched the mightnight-ish showing.

It's been some while since I last watched the mini-series, but I could've sown that this was a British series. Albeit, I find the accent very attractive (Mmm, Hugh Laurie), I would have also liked to have seen more new British talent taking more of the roles.

It appears that I have to review the mini-series again, or read the books, as I have long forgotten about the importance of the characters and/or plot ( :-[). I also have no idea as to whether this does the series justice.

Regardless, this is a highly-entertaining movie. :)

I saw the movie on saturday.

Before I saw the movie I saw a few of the shows on PBS late at night. Man that show was craptacular, but i could see there was something interesting going on story wise.

The movie was Good 3.5 out of 5 stars.
For me the first 20 minutes were great. Mos Def was a great character, but then I feel it started to go downhill. There was alot of story that never finished. Like John Malkovich's charcter. or Sam Rockwells lost body part.
The effects were good at times, but i was surprised at some of the 'Building' effects towards the end, I could see how fake everything looked (to my trained eye)

but over all it is entertaining, I too am glad they didnt add all the story I saw in the TV show, it just seemed to go on and on and on and on.

Just an FYI : this started as a Radio show , then a book, then a tv show, then a movie.

Well parts were amusing.
The theme song is rather catchy.
Over all it just didn't perform like I wanted it to. It wasn't fluid enough for me. Some stuff seemed lik eit was forced in because the fans were expecting it.
2.5 out of 5 stars from me.

Saw it.

I was entertained, but it was nowhere near what it could/should have been. The direction was terribly uninspired, something you could tell immediately just from the credits sequence. The Vogons really didn't look very good below the neck (or whatever passes for a neck on a Vogon), and it just wasn't weird or funny enough at all. In the end, there really wasn't a moment during the film where I looked at my watch or was praying for a meteor to blow up the theater, but I didn't really ever get up on the edge of my seat in awe of it either... which is something a film of this magnitude SHOULD have been able to do.

I thought they did a really good job with it. Of course, the book was better (I've only read the first one), but they were quite creative with the adaptation.

And there was a little sight gag about a farmer and his cow that reminded me of all those jokes about Jonathan Kent loving his cows too well. ;) Anyone catch it?

hated it.
too many vogons
no character development
wasted jokes
weak plot
expensive but uninspired effects
Martin Freeman and Zooey Deschanel
were just dull - not "people-like-us" dull - more "people-I-wouldn't-notice-if-i-ran-them-over-in-my-car" dull.
Sam Rockwell was just NUTS
Mos Def swallowed most of his lines
The best bits were the cameos but they were simply throw-aways
piss-poor cinematography
I could go on and on .........

i simply thought that once they got in space it got stupid. whats-his-face with the two heads was weird, stupid, and the vogons(i think that is them, the weird creatures who destroyed earth) were strange, annoying, and the whole thing just seemed weak. it started off just fine. the dolphins were cute. but, no i wasn't a fan. i thought it might be a cool movie, but it was just a waste of money.
