'Some years ago, having little or no money-And nothing in particular to interest me on shore,I thought I would sail about, and see the watery part of the world.Whenever I find myself growing grim, whenever its a damp drizzly Novermber in my soul, whenever i feel like stepping into the street and knocking peoples hats off, then I account it high time to get to the sea'.
And so begins the classic tale 'Moby Dick'.And actualy I found the 50's movie to be better then the book!Gregory Peck played Capt.Ahab-and u would be hard pressed to name a better acting performance-he plays him like a man possesssed. The music and acting throughout the film is excellent.Any other fans out there?

I read the book back in jr high. I quite enjoyed it. There was also a movie version with Patrick Stewart was Ahab. I enjoyed it, even though it wasn't exactly true to the story. Peck was Father Mapple. Check it out if you can find it.

I saw the Patrick Stewart version. It was good, but the original was much better.Patrick didnt really fill out the Capt Ahab role the way Peck did.Nothing against Patrick,as i am a big fan,but he is more suited to the Shakespear or Dickens type of role.Like I thought he was much better as Scrooge.
I saw the Gregory Peck movie, and loved it.
He's a great actor. He's also very good in "To Kill A Mockingbird", anyone has seen it?
Anyway, Moby Dick. Yes.
Last year I had an Italian written test about the pilgrims and the pioneers. So I made up a story of this poor English guy who managed to get to the US Eastern shore. Then he got married to a girl there and they lived happily ever after. But, why am I telling you this, you are asking yourselves?
Because. Because that story started like this, "Call me Ishmael". The teacher liked it a lot, she even made me read it in front of the whole class... That was embarrassing.

I read the book in high school. I've never seen the Gregory Peck movie, but I have seen the Patrick Stewart version. While I think that movie is good, I can't honestly imagine that any film version could be better than the book.
Melville's work is complex, and extends beyond its own genre (especially where he has the play in the book, and poetry). It's unfortunate that he didn't get the recognition he deserved for the work while he was alive, except among some of his friends in the literary world.
Moby Dick is one of the best books I've ever read.
