My friend made me watch Equilibrium the other day. I had never heard of it but its with Christian Bale and Taye Diggs. I have to say that movie totally rocked so it got me to thinking about awesome movies that alot of people have never seen. I'd like to know what you movies you guys think arent mainstream but really cool???

Good thread! hmmm... *ponders* there are so many that drew me in without me expecting it (on late night telly and such), but with them being so obscure I can't remember the names. I'll have to think on this one, and right now I'll go with...
The Labyrinth!!!
Sure, by now it's developed a bit of a cult following, but not NEARLY enough people have seen this! One of those cool kids classics (with puppets and songs and all) with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Very retro!

i really didn't like that movie (equilibrium). the action was ok, but the story was bitten from fahrenheit 451, the whole "future society is drugged and suppresses creativity etc" thing has been done... i do like the cast, but ehhhhhh. i was bored with it overall. of course, i saw it like 2 years ago or something so i can't really say...
edit: but in regards to the post's subject...
i liked dark city immensely.

It is a good movie.
Head in the Clouds with Charlize Theron, Penélope Cruz, and Stuart Townsend. Loved it. I love watching/reading anything about the 1920s.

agreed. The atmosphere of the movies that are small are intriguing. Harvard Man stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Eric Soltx, and Rebecca Gayhart is interertings. And The House Of Yes...but these are a several years old.

right during prohibition huh. I never saw that one, but ever since I saw The Untouchables I love seeing time piece movies in the 1920s.

I loooove this movie!! :) David Bowie's character scared me when I was little! hehe! Also I was really freaked out by the puppets that took there heads off and bounced them around like basketballs. The Labyrinth is definitly a classic!.....Here's a few more to add though to this list. "Music From Another Room" with Jude Law, Jennifer Tilly, Gretchen Mol, Martha Plimpton and Brenda Blethyn. A cute and funny movie...definitly worth checking out! There's also "Racing With the Moon" with Nicolas Cage and Sean Penn. :D

Dark Star: John Carpenter's first film about a space ship with... problems.
Raw Meat: A mine collapse in the 1800s traps people under London and they turn to cannibalism to survive. A really interesting film.
Shivers: David Cronenberg's first mainstream film about a scientist creating a parasite which is basically a cross between an aphrodisiac and a venereal disease with a truly chilling Night of the Living Dead-type climax. Remade, sort of, by DC as Rabid, with Marilyn Chambers in her first straight role; also an excellent film.
Soylent Green and Omega Man: Two Charlton Heston films made in the early '70s-- the first is also Edward G. Robinson's last film-- both apocalyptic in nature though very different in their delivery.

Check out....
Fire and Ice: a Ralph Bakshi animated sword and sorcery genre film that contains the best Conan the Barbarian on film ( tho that's not his name in the film ).
Miracle Mile: a wrong number to a pay phone in L.A. delivers a warning of pending nuclear holocaust to Anthony Edwards who was waiting for a call to come through to that phone. Pandimonium ensues, but was it in the end a prank call?

Donnie Darko is without the doubt one of the best movies ever, and talk about a cult classic

The previously mentioned Equilibrium, and Donnie Darko are both great movies. Equilibrium is one of the reasons I have great confidence that Christian Bale can pull off Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman Begins later this year.
Some other lesser known movies I like are:
Frailty
"Fenton Meeks (Matthew McConaughey), comes forth to tell the FBI that his brother Adam may be the serial killer who calls himself God's Hands, who the FBI has been searching for. The film uses flashbacks to show Meeks' childhood with a father (Bill Paxton) who believed he was on a mission from God to destroy demons that inhabit human bodies. Fenton saw his dad as evil, while Adam saw him as a hero." This is a really good thriller, and very suspenseful. Great movie.
The Frightners
"A psychic private detective who consorts with deceased souls becomes engaged in a mystery as members of the town community begin dying mysteriously. While investigating, he is aided by a friendly doctor who believes in his psychic abilities and is hindered by a crazed G-Man, a woman involved in an old serial killing, and what may be the spirit of Death itself. " An great comedy/horror/thriller directed by Peter Jackson before his LOTR fame, and stars Michael J. Fox.
Scotland, PA.
Mac McBeth is a hard-working but unambitious doofus who toils at a hamburger stand alongside his wife Pat, who has a significant edge in the brains department. Pat is convinced she could do a lot better with the place than their boss Norm Duncan is doing, so she works up a plan to usurp Norm, convincing Mac to rob the restaurant's safe and then murder Norm, using the robbery as a way of throwing the police off their trail. Though two stoners and a would-be fortune teller warn Mac that bad luck awaits him, he gathers his courage and goes through with his wife's scheme."This is modern retelling of Shakespeare's Macbeth. It is a terrific dark comedy, and if you enjoy such I highly recommend it. Also has Christopher Walken in it, and who doesn't like to see his movies.
Scorched
"Three mischevious employees (Paulo Costanzo, Woody Harrelson, Alicia Silverstone) of a bank in a small deserted town all make plans to rob at the same time, however none of them knows about the others. Meanwhile, a clothing store employee (Rachel Leigh Cook) has plans for revenge against a local millionaire (John Cleese)." Very funny comedy:lol:
I could go on, but I'll post more later. ;)

I love that movie. Everybody should watch it. It was wonderful concept to work with, and the flasbacks are done so well.
Frequency starring Dennis Quaid and Jim Caveizal is great suspesne thiller about time realities, and wonderful story about a father and son.

I have to say that "The Frighteners" is one of my favorite flicks of all time. Its also cool when you can diss posers who claim to love Peter Jackson and his horror days but dont know that directed this movie.
Has anyone seen the movie strange days with Ralph Fiennes and Angela basset???? It came out in like 95 or 96 and its about a low life (fiennes) who sells other people's experiences by way of a neurological chip to other low life's. He stumbles across a killers memory of a murder. And the killer keeps sending him the "chip" with the murders. Anyway im not really explaining it great but its a really cool movie, kind of ahead of its time, but really worth checking out.

I've not seen "Strange Days", but it does sound interesting.
Another good one is The Minus Man
"A cold-blooded serial killer floats around the country and chooses his victims from people who complain about their lives and indicate a willingness to be killed. The killer settles into a seaside rooming house run by an unhappy married couple and waits for his next victims to unveil themselves. Dream cops plague his nights, while plotting his murders." This is a really good movie, but it is a little slower paced so if you don't like movies with a lot of dialogue you might not like it. It also stars Owen Wilson in one of the few movies I've seen him in which isn't a comedy.

I don't know if it really counts as obscure or not, but The Boondock Saints is a pretty popular movie with my friends. Personally, I didn't care for it.

I liked boondock saints but i think if you have a brother then the movie just works better for you. A buddy mine loves this movie and i really believe its becuase he's really close with his brother.
I'm really close to three of my friends from elementary school so the movie Sleepers really resonates with me. Not that we were "accosted" in a boys prison by the guards but we are just really close friends like the characters in that movie.

I dont know if this counts, but then again this is my thread so i guess it does, but "So I married an Axe Murderer" is a hilarious movie. IMO its the best mike myers movie. Its pretty well known but its not as main stream as Waynes' World or Austin Powers. But i definetly think its funnier than both those.

Birthday Girl starring Nicole Kidman and Ben Chaplin. It's one of the best thrillers I've seen. John (Chaplin) is a lonely British bank employee who meets Sophia (Kidman) through a dating service online. John is instantly attracted to Sophia however she doesn't speak any English; John assuming is a mistake by the dating service. As John tries to contact the service to correct the mistake he and Sophia begin an intriguing relationship. It’s a really great movie, I rented it before and happened to buy it today.
Pumpkin starring Christina Ricci and Hank Harris. This movie is so funny. Carolyn McDuffy (Ricci) is a sorority girl who believes everything should be perfect and claiming never to have had a bad day. Carolyn's sorority wants to win the trophy for best sorority on campus and to win over new rushees. To help boost their image they volunteer for a charity campaign, helping handicap kids. Carolyn begins to spend time with Pumpkin Romanoff, a semi-retarded, physically challenged boy. They begin a very interesting relationship and how their pairing effects those around them. It's an extremely funny movie that address social elitism and campus hypocrisy.
